The 15th edition of the BVI Dinghy Championships wrapped up on Sunday with seven new champions crowned.
The 85 competitors from the BVI, St Thomas, St Croix and Puerto Rico were treated to a stunning weekend of sailing out on the Sir Francis Drake channel with fantastic hospitality and entertainment at Nanny Cay.
The seven classes were split across two race course areas with nearly 50 races completed through the weekend.  Fresh winds from the south east gave the competitors some challenging sailing conditions and, for some, an unexpectedly thorough work out!
The hottest competition came in the Optimist fleet where the BVI’s Rayne Duff exchanged the lead with Mia Nicolosi (ISV) throughout the weekend.  First and second in every race went to one of these two sailors but is was disappointment for local sailor Duff that Nicolosi pipped him to the title by just one point with six bullets to his five and retained her title.
The battle for third was equally tight with one point separating Mathieu Dale (ISV) from Julian van den Driessche (ISV).
Second overall for Duff gave him the red fleet honours with Nicolosi claiming the blue fleet and Max van den Driessche (ISV) winning the white fleet title.
The Optimist Green fleet was the biggest seen at this championship with 30 sailors lining up.  For some this was their first racing experience but with 15 races now under their belts on a very busy race course they have gained invaluable knowledge to take home and to the next event.  Tanner Krygsveld (ISV) was the most consistent sailor finishing with 36 points.  Behind him, just three points separated second to fourth place with the final order being Andy Yu (ISV), Jose Guillemo Diaz (PUR) and Samuel Allen (IVB).
Three BVI sailors raced in the Open Bic event on the same course area as the Optimist Green Fleet.  Nicholas Haycraft was the overall victor ahead of Isaac Sutherland-Pilch and Felix Thorp.  Haycraft was also award the 2016 Sportsmanship Trophy for his support throughout the weekend towards his fellow Bic competitors as well as sailors across the other fleets.
In the Laser class, Danny Petrovic (IVB) posted an almost clean sweep of bullets with the exception of a DNF in race 4, proving that youth can win out over experience.  Mark van de Driessche (ISV) took second overall from defending champion Colin Rathbun (IVB).
Rising star Thad Lettsome (IVB) finished in second place to Sam Morrell (IVB) in the first race of the championship but from that point forward was unbeatable across the 10 race series.  At just 14 years of age, Lettsome is one to watch for the future.  Morrell rounded out the championship in second place with Ethan Hanley from St Croix finishing third overall.
Taylor Hasson (ISV) celebrated his birthday yesterday with the Laser 4.7 trophy.
Four IC24s sailed a six race series on Saturday and it was Ted Reshetiloff skippering Intac who dominated the score board, taking the bullet in every race.  Eddie Brockbank on Black Pearl and Bob Phillips on Roosta traded second and third place throughout the day with Brockbank coming out on top and finishing second overall.  Giles Wood with Latitude 18 finished in fourth place.
Optimist Triple Crown
As well as event honours, the Optimist Championship fleet were also battling for the 2016 Triple Crown title.  The BVI Dinghy Championships is the final regatta in the series which also includes the results from the VIODA Championship in St Thomas and the Cruzan Open in St Croix.  Mia Nicolosi (St Thomas) was the overall winner with 2015 champion Rayne Duff (IVB) having to settle for second place this year.  Mathieu Dale from St Croix took third.

Over 70 Boats Registered For 2016 BVI Dinghy Championships

By RBVIYC

3ef01173-8290-46d7-8531-cd929eb66a63The 15th edition of the BVI Dinghy Championships is set to be one of the biggest ever with over 70 sailors registered to compete on 21 and 22 May.

Sailors from the BVI, USVI and Puerto Rico will take to the water in Optimist, Optimist Green fleet, Laser, Laser Radial, Open Bic and IC24 events for the honour of being named the 2016 BVI Dinghy Champion.

Hosted at Nanny Cay, racing will take place in the Sir Francis Drake Channel on two course areas, getting underway at 10:00 on Saturday.

26 sailors are registered in the Optimist Championship fleet with awards up to grabs in three divisions: white (age 10 and younger), blue (age 11 and 12) and red (age 13 to 15).

2015 winner Mia Nicolosi will be back to defend her title in the Optimist Championship fleet.  Pipping her brother Teddy to the post by just one point in 2015, Nicolosi has been the form sailor throughout the 2016 season.  Turning 13 in June, this will be Nicolosi’s last regatta in the blue fleet and for that title she will see her biggest challenges coming from the BVIs Nathan Haycraft, and Kyle Roose, Lake Sanford and Mathieu Dale from St Croix and Caroline Sibilly from St Thomas.

Consistently taking first in the red fleet this year, the BVI’s Rayne Duff holds the titles from the MLK Regatta, VIODA Champioship, Sunshine State Regatta and the Cruzan Open but has missed out on the overall wins to Nicolosi.  Duff has been training hard and will make the most of racing on home waters to return the title to the BVI.

The white fleet has just three sailors registered but national pride is at stake with Ryan Lettsome from the BVI, competing against Iola Kohl from St Croix and Luca Perino from Puerto Rico for division honours.

With 28 sailors registered for the Optimist Green Fleet, the stage is set for a great challenge.  The Optimist green fleet is for those sailors new to racing and the youngest competitor in the mix is just 8 years old.

Leading the way for the BVI is Samuel Allen, who has posted top five results at all his regattas so far this year, and Noah George.  There are a number of BVI sailors making their international racing debut, including De’Sani Thomas, Sophia Jara, Kael Chalwell, Ethan George and Victoria Rowlette – good luck to them all.

The visitors to watch in the green fleet include Milo Miller from St Croix who claimed the honours at the Cruzan Open and VIODA Championship whilst Puerto Rico’s Jose Guillermo Diaz has two second place finishes to his name this year.

Colin Rathbun will be hoping to defend his title in the Laser and will be up against the BVI’s 2015 Youth Worlds representative from 2015, Daniel Petrovic – can youth win out over experience?

In the Laser Radial class, defending champion Sam Morrell will be battling it out for honours with BVI sailors Thad Lettsome, Jerome Parkins, Stephon Ganga, Stephen Ganga and St Croix’s Taylor Hasson and Ethan Hanley.

Four IC24s and a J24 are expected to line up in the keelboat fleet.  Helming the RBVIYCs Black Pearl will be Eddie Brockbank with Giles Wood skippering Latitude 18, duking it out against Ted Reshetiloff (Intac), Bob Philips (Roosta) and Aaron Gardner competing with his J24 Bravissimo.

VIODA Triple Crown
The Optimist Championship fleet sailors are not only vying for the 2016 BVI title but also for the 2016 VIODA Triple Crown.  With results from the VIODA Opti Championship in St Thomas, St Croix’s Cruzan Open and the BVI Dinghy Championships all counting towards an overall score the heat is on.  Mia Nicolosi (ISV) is currently leading the way ahead of 2015 champion Rayne Duff (IVB) with Victoria Flately (ISV) holding off Mathieu Dale (ISV) for third.

The British Virgin Islands Tennis Association (BVITA), in collaboration with the British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee, are set to launch a campaign to raise awareness of tennis and to encourage more residents to play the sport.

Project Consultant, Mike Barrel revealed the venture in a press briefing on May 17th 2016 at the Department of Youth and Sports.

The project dubbed ‘Tennis Revolution’ is said to introduce a number of creative and innovative ways to make tennis interesting for the residents in the Territory.

“The project is an opportunity for children and adults to approach tennis in a very different way. It is a very ambitious project; something we see can be very beneficial to the BVI. We hope to make tennis much more accessible to different people, no matter the age or the gender.”

He added that the BVITA intends to introduce the project into the schools in the BVI and their curriculum, as well as in the various communities around the Territory.

The project is scheduled to run from September 2016 to September 2017.

In dominant style the Virgin Island Volleyball Association Power League Men’s and Women’s B Division Championships were won in straight sets on Saturday May 14, 2016, by Jus Dream and the VG Eagles respectively in the Multi Purpose Sports Complex.

First up and in front of a raucous “home” crowd, the VG Eagles, who were only playing on the beach for fun last year, completed their unbeaten season, in which they haven’t lost a set, with a 3-0 win over the Vixens.

The first set was tight, 25-22, but from then the Eagles took control of the match and won the next two sets 25-15, 25-14, to become champions.

Daphne Sprauve had 10 Aces, Ana Cera 6, Lyra George 3 and Yvette Harley 4 Kills.

For the Vixens, Shermin James had 5 Aces and 3 Kills.

Eagles’ reaction

Head Coach, Raymond Fonseca, was a very happy man with the win for his girls. “I’m very proud of the team, we only came together in January to play in this league and we haven’t lost a set. They worked hard, played great as a team and deserve to be champions.”

Next Season the Eagles, according to Fonseca, will become two teams, with representation in the “A” Division as well as a team still playing in the “B” Division.

Lyra George, the Club President and key player, was also pleased with the win. “We are a young, awesome team; we kept together, came to win and did just that. Fighting hard not to lose a set throughout the season was also a goal we had and that is pleasing too.”

George also noted that it was great to see so many Fans from Virgin Gorda come down to the MPSC to watch. “When we played in Virgin Gorda the Gym was full, but down here there is not the same atmosphere, so hopefully there will be more and more games over on VG next season. It was awesome though to hear our fans shouting and cheering us on tonight.”

Best Attacker Award went to Sue Brown of the Vixens, Most Blocks, Shaunice Leonard, Best Server Daphne Sprauve and Best Setter Debbie Ridgeway.

The MVP was Yvette Harley of Eagles.

Just Dream cruise to Men’s Championship

Jus Dream were equally as dominant in a somewhat one sided Men’s Championship when they cruised to a straight sets win over Raw Power, 25-12, 25-19, 25-16.

For Jus Dream, Canice Marquis had 15 Kills and 5 Digs, Curtis Davis 5 Blocks, Willis Potter 4 Aces and 4 Digs, Travis Jack 6 Kills and Andre Pickering 5.

The Raw Power team was led by 3 Kills, 3 Blocks and 3 Digs by Sherwin Modoc, whilst Louis Callwood had 4 Digs, Edson Boyea also 4 and Leon Smith with 6 Kills.

Drexel Glasgow, who had 4 Kills, 3 Blocks and 3 Digs for Jus Dream, commented that his team had a game plan and they stuck to it. “We stuck to what we wanted to do best and despite a little rough patch in the second set, came through comfortably. We thought Raw Power would have been more competitive, but then again we dominated them and didn’t give them a chance to get into the game.”

Best Attacker was Paul Mourillon, Best Blocker Curtis Davis, Best Server, Setter and MVP Willis Potter.

Fournier Wins Virgin Gorda Half Marathon Battle After Reeling In Stoby

By BVI Athletics Association

For a moment during Saturday’s 5th Virgin Gorda Half Marathon, Vincent Fournier thought he’d given home turf advantage to Tortola resident Ruben Stoby, who opened a sizeable gap.

“The way this started out, I didn’t think I was going to win it,” said Fournier who covered the 13.1 mile hilly course in 1 hour 35 minutes and 24 seconds, with Stoby another 35 seconds back. “We were head to head then in those hills (going to Nail Bay) he took a big head start and I told myself, ‘alright Vincent, if you follow that pace, you’re going to die in the middle of the race’ so I decided to try and do my own race and, try to catch up when it was flat again. But, he was so far ahead that I didn’t think I’d catch up.”

Fournier said that eventually near the Coppermine Road on the southern end of the island he noticed he was making an inroad into Stoby’s lead, which gave him a big boost.

“Eventually I caught up to him, we ran together until Top of the Baths and I was like alright, I live on this island its time for me to give all I got for the rest and defend home turf and I’m proud,” he said. “Even if I’ve only been here for six months.”

Stoby said it was a good cat and mouse race and after seizing the lead, he thought Fournier had fallen off the pace for good.

“I think the mistake I made was not to try to push it from there and I just continued and allowed him to catch me,” Stoby explained, noting he was surprised to see Fournier in Copper Mine. “When I turned around, I saw him right there and for a runner, that can be psychologically challenging. We ran together for a little while, then he made a move just before the turnaround at the Baths and I failed to cover that. But, I’m not too disappointed because he’s a good athlete. I wanted to win, but nevertheless, it’s my second, second. I remember El Garrough (Hachim). He tried for the Olympic gold three times and he was expected to win and he didn’t.  Just like that, I’m going to come back and hopefully win in on the third try.”

Maria Mays, sixth overall was the first woman crossing the line in 1:52.16 and said she was surprised to win after having a bug earlier in the week and she expected to feel awful. “But after the first mile, I didn’t,” she said. “I really wasn’t on form and I thought I wasn’t going to do it then I decided to go out, have fun and and enjoy it. I felt much stronger than I thought I’d be.”

Frequent visitor Ryan Blanchard of Richmond Va., who’s getting married on Virgin Gorda this week, ran the race with his fiancé Andrea Sorlie.

“It was a little hotter than last year I really liked the over cast last year,” he said. “It’s a great race. You can’t beat the views. Whenever your legs start hurting, you just look out-doesn’t take the pain away-but it takes your mind off it.”

He’d hope to finish in under two hours and did 2:13.10 and his fiancé, 2:35.46. “I ran it all last year but I walked up the big hills this time because I knew where they were,” he said.

Native Virgin Gordian Kilen Smith said she had been running two mile races and decided to tackle the 6 Mile Challenge as she’d never run that far before. “It was good,” she said.  After finishing in 1:18.03, before going to play with the Virgin Gorda Eagles in the BVI Volleyball Association championship game.  “I thought it would have been a bit tougher, but for the first time, I think I did good.”

Top Half Marathon Finishers. Men: 1. Vincent Fournier, 1 hour 35 minutes and 24 seconds. 2 Rebuen Stoby, 1:35.59. 3. Guy Williamson, 1:44.49. 4. Jacques Roux, 1:48.08. 5. Rodrigo dos Santos, 1:51.56.Women: Maria Mays, 1:52.16. 2. Melissa Brunner, 2:00.17. 3. Rebecca Paul, 2:01.32. 3. Kim Tackeuchi, 2:10.24. 4. Claudia Ferrari, 2:10.35.5. Mellisende Rowe, 2:12.20.

Central Arizona College sophomore Tynelle Gumbs, systematically dominated the Region I Championships, winning three of the four throws, ahead of the upcoming National Jr. Colleges Athletics Association Championships on May 17-19, at South Plains College, in Levelland, Texas.

Tynelle used a personal best and National Record throw of 47.76m to win the Discus Throw, upping her best from 47.36m. Twin sister Trevia finished second with a mark of 42.08m.

In her final season representing Central Arizona College, Tynelle was coming off winning the Hammer Throw with a 52.21m effort. Trevia missed second place by a centimeter, with her 46,24m toss. Tynelle won her third event of the competition in helping Central to win the title with 309 points, after a season’s best of 40.57m in the Javelin Throw. Trevia produced a season’s best 13.36m mark in the Shot Put to finish third, with Tynelle placing fourth with 12.74m.

“I’m extremely happy about winning three of the four throws, that’s a big accomplishment,” Tynelle said. “I think the biggest thing for the Discus was staying relaxed and listening to my coach, especially when he said ‘push all the way through the Discus.'”

She said she’s feeling good heading into Jr. College Nationals along with her sister. “I’m excited to see what everyone brings to the table, but more excited to see how well I throw,” she stated. “The ultimate aim is to break the Hammer Throw record which is over 60m, so hopefully, that happens.”

St. Augustine Jr. Khari Herbert, tuned up for the upcoming NCAA Division II Championships in Bradenton, Florida, May 26-28, with a season’s best and second place finish in the 400m at the Liberty Invitational. He had a time of 46.63 seconds.
