The Women’s Committee of the BVI Football Association pulled off a day of fun filled football action to celebrate CONCACAF World Women’s Day on Saturday, May 21 at the A.O. Shirley Ground.

Almost 50 girls of various ages and abilities turned out for the celebration, including a large group from Virgin Gorda. All were put through dribbling and shooting drills and were given the opportunity to win prizes with their new found skills.

3 v 3 and 5 v 5 games also took place with the older groups and the whole day was a great testament to the development and continued success of women’s football in the territory and around the region.

BVIFA President, Andy Bickerton was on hand to present the awards. “All 41 countries within CONCACAF had a women’s day and the BVIFA has always supported Women’s Football,” said Bickerton.  “We at the BVIFA are very pleased with the turn out at the A.O. Shirley Ground today with the 4 age groups: U7’s, U9’s, U15’s as well as Open and especially to see those 5 – 6 year olds out there enjoying themselves was wonderful.”

Bickerton also noted that the world governing body, FIFA  has just appointed a female General Secretary showing their commitment to increasing women’s involvement in the sport. CONCACAF elected a female representative to a FIFA Committee in Sonya Bien-Aime and in fact, since Bickerton became president, the BVIFA has placed the development of the women’s game high on the agenda.

Sharlene Pond, who heads up the new Women’s Committee at the BVIFA said, “we had similar numbers today, as last year, but we also saw a good many new faces who will be new players to the game. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and some wanted to carry on playing even after we had the awards ceremony!”

Gumbs Sisters End Jr. College Career With All America Honors

Twin sisters and Central Arizona College sophomores Tynelle and Trevia Gumbs, ended their Jr. College career by grabbing All America honors during the National Jr. Colleges Athletics Association Championships in Levelland, Texas.

After Tynelle fouled out in the Hammer Throw where she was ranked No.2 in the event, Trevia used a personal best of 49.51m to place fourth and collected the first of her three All America honors, including the Discus Throw and Shot put.

Tynelle bounced back from her hammer throw foul troubles and placed second in the Discus after a 46.98m effort as Trevia placed sixth with 43.47m and both secured All America.

“I was extremely happy even though I did not go over 50m as I wanted too,” said Tynelle, who has a 47.76 best, adding that she couldn’t find her rhythm in the Hammer Throw. “I’m happy I was able to pull out second place.”

Tynelle placed fourth in the Javelin Throw with a 40.05m effort and Trevia had a season’s best of 14.50m in the Shot Put, good for sixth place.

“I was excited for her because she did better than a lot of girls who were ranked higher than her,” Tynelle said of Trevia. “I was so proud.”

Although they could end up at different schools in the fall, Tynelle said she enjoyed having her twin in Arizona. “It’s always great having my sister there,” she stated. “She’s my biggest motivation and she’s a great competitor too.”

Trevia, who has a 14.83m best, struggled mightily in the Shot Put this season, before throwing over 14.00m for the first time all year in the championships. “I had a season’s best in the Shot and a personal best in the Hammer, but I know there’s way more room for further throws,” she said. “This year has been very rough in the Shot for me. I started getting back in the swing of things two weeks ago and I’m getting back up there with my marks and I know I have a lot left this season.”

Trevia was satisfied with her Hammer Throw personal best. “I know I had a lot more there,” she said. “But, I was content in getting the points for my team and making the finals.”

With their Jr. College career over and not sure they will be at the same school come September, which “would be nice but if we have to go different places that’s fine,” says Tynelle, they’re now turning their attention to regional competitions.

The soon to be 20-year olds, will compete at the July 2-3 OECS Championships on home soil before heading to El Salvador for the July 15-17, NACAC U23 Championships.

“We’re definitely excited for both competitions,” Tynelle said. “We’re not only looking to make the finals, but medaling, especially at NACAC.”

At the same competition held at her school, Taylor Hill helped South Plains College to a 4x100m Relay victory in 45.61 seconds, to earn All America honors, after recording non-advancing times of 12.03 and 25.10 seconds respectively, in the sprints.

Elsewhere, Eldred Henry recorded season’s best of 19.33m in the Shot Put and 55.80m in the Discus Throw, at the Tucson Elite Invitational in Tucson, Arizona.

The Wendoll Williams Cup got off in fine style on Sunday May 22, 2016 with a win for the defending Champions, Sugar Boys F.C. and Wolues F.C.

Both games took place in front of a sizeable crowd on the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds in Road Town and after a ceremonial presentation line to greet the players and Referees by D’Avian Williams, Nadege Williams, daughters of the late Wendoll Williams, BVIFA President Andy Bickerton, Asst Secretary- Operations Avanell Morton, and Vice President of the BVIFA Aubrey Liburd.

Sugar Boys overcome spirited Haitian Stars

The Sugar Boys were given an early gift for the opening goal when inexplicably Haitian Stars defender James Felix handled the ball in the penalty box from a corner.

Leonard Davis made no mistake with his spot kick and Derol Redhead soon doubled the advantage to seemingly give the Sugar Boys a comfortable ride into the second round.

However, Andre Thomas pulled one back for the Stars in the 31st minute and then Omar Plitol grabbed an equalizer in the 64th minute to give the defending champions cause for concern.

Not willing to relinquish their title just yet, though, the Boys from VG responded with three quick fire goals from Andres Bailey in the 67th minute, Shawn Jacob in the 71st and Terrance Nanton in the 79th to make the final score 5-2.

Wolues progress to semi finals

Alessandro Pallandino scored a wonder goal in the 9th minute to open the scoring for the Wolues, cushioning the ball with his left foot and then curling the ball past the Ols Madrid goal keeper from 18 yards out with his right foot.

Leo Forte put the Wolues 2-0 up in the 76th minute, before Bernard Grant fired home for Old Madrid after Andre Gaymes had saved the initial effort from Kenmore Peters, who slipped as he took his shot from the spot.

However, there would be no more scoring and the Wolues progressed into the semi finals.

This Sunday VG United face Panthers F.C. at 5.15pm, whilst Islanders F.C. take on One Love at 7.00pm.

Melissa Brunner and Reuben Stoby closed the Blenheim Trust 5K Series with victories on Saturday. The race started and ended at the A. O. Shirley Grounds.

“It felt amazing and it was a personal record,” Brunner said of her 22 minutes and 10 seconds run. “The training was pretty hard all season and I think the big race in Virgin Gorda last weekend just sort of primed me up for this one. But I was quite shocked when I passed Rose (Johnson) I thought for sure she was going to be on my tail right at the end. Took a few looks back coming down the home stretch and she wasn’t there so I sprinted the last bit just to get my personal best, so I worked out. So, I’m quite pleased.”

Stoby led the field of 41 participants in 18:42 and said he wanted to run sub 17:00. “There was a strong headwind, but definitely after the first mile, I realized Virgin Gorda (Half Marathon) was still in my legs, so I just decided not to push it any harder. And then I was missing Vincent (Fournier). Maye if he was here, he would have been able to pull me through.”

Stoby said he was happy to come out on top to end a tough season where he had his wins and losses.

“It’s always good to end on a winning note and I look forward to what’s to come in the 10K Series,” he said. “It was a good race. The conditions were a bit hot and the sun was out, but I was able to push it through and win fairly easily in the end.”

North Sound go top BVIFA Youth League

As the BVI Football Association (BVIFA) continued its Youth League on Saturday May 21, 2016 at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds, Road Town were held to a 1-1 draw with Valley F.C. and North Sound grabbed a 1-0 win over West End Tigers.

Road Town, one of the stronger of the teams on paper, controlled the early exchanges, but were unable to convert that dominance into goals and at half time it was 0-0.

Valley came out in the second half, with renewed energy and confidence, taking the game to Road Town and also taking the lead through Kemron Tillack in the 65th minute.

Road Town, had introduced Phillip Jules at half time and his probing runs, along with the moving up front of Sheldon Harry Junior, soon had Valley back peddling to hold onto their slender lead.

Chances went begging for Road Town, but the equaliser when it came in the 71st minute was spectacular.

Jules won a corner on the left and taking it himself, saw his curling cross come shot elude the despairing dive of Joshua Ramprashad in goal to nestle in the top right corner.

North Sound hand West End Tigers first loss

The second game of the day saw an inspired performance from North Sound as they overcame the previously unbeaten West End Tigers.

The predatory Jahdique Winchester slotted home the only goal of the game early in the second half and the boys and girls from VG then comfortably dealt with any threat of an equaliser to claim all 3 points.

“I’m very pleased and happy with the win,” commented Richie Morton, the North Sound Coach. “We took our time to build into the game as we were seeing how they would play. Once we reshaped to counter their tactics we took control and scored the important goal.”

Morton also noted that Winchester had a lot of skill and has a habit of going quiet, but popping up in the right place at the right time to score important goals.

The two Men of the Match awards, which is a gift certificate from Amazon.com, went to Mikel Morain of North Sound F.C. for a superb defensive performance and Michael Woodley from Valley F.C.

Seven New BVI Sailing Champions Crowned

The 15th edition of the BVI Dinghy Championships wrapped up on Sunday with seven new champions crowned.
The 85 competitors from the BVI, St Thomas, St Croix and Puerto Rico were treated to a stunning weekend of sailing out on the Sir Francis Drake channel with fantastic hospitality and entertainment at Nanny Cay.
The seven classes were split across two race course areas with nearly 50 races completed through the weekend.  Fresh winds from the south east gave the competitors some challenging sailing conditions and, for some, an unexpectedly thorough work out!
The hottest competition came in the Optimist fleet where the BVI’s Rayne Duff exchanged the lead with Mia Nicolosi (ISV) throughout the weekend.  First and second in every race went to one of these two sailors but is was disappointment for local sailor Duff that Nicolosi pipped him to the title by just one point with six bullets to his five and retained her title.
The battle for third was equally tight with one point separating Mathieu Dale (ISV) from Julian van den Driessche (ISV).
Second overall for Duff gave him the red fleet honours with Nicolosi claiming the blue fleet and Max van den Driessche (ISV) winning the white fleet title.
The Optimist Green fleet was the biggest seen at this championship with 30 sailors lining up.  For some this was their first racing experience but with 15 races now under their belts on a very busy race course they have gained invaluable knowledge to take home and to the next event.  Tanner Krygsveld (ISV) was the most consistent sailor finishing with 36 points.  Behind him, just three points separated second to fourth place with the final order being Andy Yu (ISV), Jose Guillemo Diaz (PUR) and Samuel Allen (IVB).
Three BVI sailors raced in the Open Bic event on the same course area as the Optimist Green Fleet.  Nicholas Haycraft was the overall victor ahead of Isaac Sutherland-Pilch and Felix Thorp.  Haycraft was also award the 2016 Sportsmanship Trophy for his support throughout the weekend towards his fellow Bic competitors as well as sailors across the other fleets.
In the Laser class, Danny Petrovic (IVB) posted an almost clean sweep of bullets with the exception of a DNF in race 4, proving that youth can win out over experience.  Mark van de Driessche (ISV) took second overall from defending champion Colin Rathbun (IVB).
Rising star Thad Lettsome (IVB) finished in second place to Sam Morrell (IVB) in the first race of the championship but from that point forward was unbeatable across the 10 race series.  At just 14 years of age, Lettsome is one to watch for the future.  Morrell rounded out the championship in second place with Ethan Hanley from St Croix finishing third overall.
Taylor Hasson (ISV) celebrated his birthday yesterday with the Laser 4.7 trophy.
Four IC24s sailed a six race series on Saturday and it was Ted Reshetiloff skippering Intac who dominated the score board, taking the bullet in every race.  Eddie Brockbank on Black Pearl and Bob Phillips on Roosta traded second and third place throughout the day with Brockbank coming out on top and finishing second overall.  Giles Wood with Latitude 18 finished in fourth place.
Optimist Triple Crown
As well as event honours, the Optimist Championship fleet were also battling for the 2016 Triple Crown title.  The BVI Dinghy Championships is the final regatta in the series which also includes the results from the VIODA Championship in St Thomas and the Cruzan Open in St Croix.  Mia Nicolosi (St Thomas) was the overall winner with 2015 champion Rayne Duff (IVB) having to settle for second place this year.  Mathieu Dale from St Croix took third.

Over 70 Boats Registered For 2016 BVI Dinghy Championships

By RBVIYC

3ef01173-8290-46d7-8531-cd929eb66a63The 15th edition of the BVI Dinghy Championships is set to be one of the biggest ever with over 70 sailors registered to compete on 21 and 22 May.

Sailors from the BVI, USVI and Puerto Rico will take to the water in Optimist, Optimist Green fleet, Laser, Laser Radial, Open Bic and IC24 events for the honour of being named the 2016 BVI Dinghy Champion.

Hosted at Nanny Cay, racing will take place in the Sir Francis Drake Channel on two course areas, getting underway at 10:00 on Saturday.

26 sailors are registered in the Optimist Championship fleet with awards up to grabs in three divisions: white (age 10 and younger), blue (age 11 and 12) and red (age 13 to 15).

2015 winner Mia Nicolosi will be back to defend her title in the Optimist Championship fleet.  Pipping her brother Teddy to the post by just one point in 2015, Nicolosi has been the form sailor throughout the 2016 season.  Turning 13 in June, this will be Nicolosi’s last regatta in the blue fleet and for that title she will see her biggest challenges coming from the BVIs Nathan Haycraft, and Kyle Roose, Lake Sanford and Mathieu Dale from St Croix and Caroline Sibilly from St Thomas.

Consistently taking first in the red fleet this year, the BVI’s Rayne Duff holds the titles from the MLK Regatta, VIODA Champioship, Sunshine State Regatta and the Cruzan Open but has missed out on the overall wins to Nicolosi.  Duff has been training hard and will make the most of racing on home waters to return the title to the BVI.

The white fleet has just three sailors registered but national pride is at stake with Ryan Lettsome from the BVI, competing against Iola Kohl from St Croix and Luca Perino from Puerto Rico for division honours.

With 28 sailors registered for the Optimist Green Fleet, the stage is set for a great challenge.  The Optimist green fleet is for those sailors new to racing and the youngest competitor in the mix is just 8 years old.

Leading the way for the BVI is Samuel Allen, who has posted top five results at all his regattas so far this year, and Noah George.  There are a number of BVI sailors making their international racing debut, including De’Sani Thomas, Sophia Jara, Kael Chalwell, Ethan George and Victoria Rowlette – good luck to them all.

The visitors to watch in the green fleet include Milo Miller from St Croix who claimed the honours at the Cruzan Open and VIODA Championship whilst Puerto Rico’s Jose Guillermo Diaz has two second place finishes to his name this year.

Colin Rathbun will be hoping to defend his title in the Laser and will be up against the BVI’s 2015 Youth Worlds representative from 2015, Daniel Petrovic – can youth win out over experience?

In the Laser Radial class, defending champion Sam Morrell will be battling it out for honours with BVI sailors Thad Lettsome, Jerome Parkins, Stephon Ganga, Stephen Ganga and St Croix’s Taylor Hasson and Ethan Hanley.

Four IC24s and a J24 are expected to line up in the keelboat fleet.  Helming the RBVIYCs Black Pearl will be Eddie Brockbank with Giles Wood skippering Latitude 18, duking it out against Ted Reshetiloff (Intac), Bob Philips (Roosta) and Aaron Gardner competing with his J24 Bravissimo.

VIODA Triple Crown
The Optimist Championship fleet sailors are not only vying for the 2016 BVI title but also for the 2016 VIODA Triple Crown.  With results from the VIODA Opti Championship in St Thomas, St Croix’s Cruzan Open and the BVI Dinghy Championships all counting towards an overall score the heat is on.  Mia Nicolosi (ISV) is currently leading the way ahead of 2015 champion Rayne Duff (IVB) with Victoria Flately (ISV) holding off Mathieu Dale (ISV) for third.

The British Virgin Islands Tennis Association (BVITA), in collaboration with the British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee, are set to launch a campaign to raise awareness of tennis and to encourage more residents to play the sport.

Project Consultant, Mike Barrel revealed the venture in a press briefing on May 17th 2016 at the Department of Youth and Sports.

The project dubbed ‘Tennis Revolution’ is said to introduce a number of creative and innovative ways to make tennis interesting for the residents in the Territory.

“The project is an opportunity for children and adults to approach tennis in a very different way. It is a very ambitious project; something we see can be very beneficial to the BVI. We hope to make tennis much more accessible to different people, no matter the age or the gender.”

He added that the BVITA intends to introduce the project into the schools in the BVI and their curriculum, as well as in the various communities around the Territory.

The project is scheduled to run from September 2016 to September 2017.

In between a pre-meet shower on Friday and a threat of rain and Saturday’s end the BVI Athletics Association National Youth Championships, which also celebrated the 21st IAAF World Athletics Day, Ariyah Smith led the territory’s top U15 athletes and visiting athletes from St. Croix, with four victories.

Khybah Dawson and A’Sia McMaster pulled off trebles and nine athletes were double winners in the competition that had most of the athletes opting to represent their clubs, with St. Georges and Joyce Samuel the two schools fielding teams.

Smith’s quadruple came in the U13 Girls events with victories in the 200m in 27.64 seconds; a 27.50m Baseball Throw, a 1.25m High Jump clearance and a 4.10m flight in the Long Jump.

Khybah Dawson, after a second place finish in the U13 Boys 100m behind Kyron Walwyn’s 13.17 seconds with 13.34, went on to post his treble with a Long Jump personal best of 4.98m, then tied Sha’el Lavacia’s 1.45m clearance in the High Jump, before wrapping up his winnings with a 27.37 seconds 200m triumph.

A’Sia McMaster secured her U11 Girls triple with narrow sprint victories over Kayla Bratwaithe, 11.86-11.92 seconds in the 100m and 22.73-22.78 in the 150m. She completed her work after cutting the sand at 3.57m in the Long Jump.

Zara Brown, a 2018 Youth Olympic Games prospect, secured an U15 Girls 12.64/26.03 seconds sprint double, while her counterpart Xiomara Malone was second in both sprints in 12.85 and 26.67, before notching her own double of 1.60m in the High Jump and 4.97m in the Long Jump.

Malik Smith sprinted to 11.65 and 23.83 seconds for his U15 Boys double, while Kyle Leader cleared 5.20m in the Long Jump after a 51.30m effort in the Baseball Throw.

Jahtivyah Williams’ U13 Girls double came with triumphs in the 300m in 45.26 seconds and one minute 55.23 seconds in the 600m.

Tiondre Frett topped the U9 Boys sprints, taking the 60m in 9.38 seconds and the 150m in 23.34. Jayla Winter won the same events in the Girls division, with marks of 10.00 and 25.67 seconds respectively.
