Melissa Brunner and Reuben Stoby closed the Blenheim Trust 5K Series with victories on Saturday. The race started and ended at the A. O. Shirley Grounds.

“It felt amazing and it was a personal record,” Brunner said of her 22 minutes and 10 seconds run. “The training was pretty hard all season and I think the big race in Virgin Gorda last weekend just sort of primed me up for this one. But I was quite shocked when I passed Rose (Johnson) I thought for sure she was going to be on my tail right at the end. Took a few looks back coming down the home stretch and she wasn’t there so I sprinted the last bit just to get my personal best, so I worked out. So, I’m quite pleased.”

Stoby led the field of 41 participants in 18:42 and said he wanted to run sub 17:00. “There was a strong headwind, but definitely after the first mile, I realized Virgin Gorda (Half Marathon) was still in my legs, so I just decided not to push it any harder. And then I was missing Vincent (Fournier). Maye if he was here, he would have been able to pull me through.”

Stoby said he was happy to come out on top to end a tough season where he had his wins and losses.

“It’s always good to end on a winning note and I look forward to what’s to come in the 10K Series,” he said. “It was a good race. The conditions were a bit hot and the sun was out, but I was able to push it through and win fairly easily in the end.”

Reuben Stoby and Katrina Crumpler were the top men and women’s finishers in Saturday’s Blenheim Trust 5K Series tour stop on Beef Island, where the women had a three minutes start on the men and only Stoby managed to get to the line before the first woman.

Stoby, whose aim was to catch all the women, meandered the course from Long Bay Beach past the airport and return in 17 minutes and 56.6 seconds.

“The only thing is after I caught them, I slowed down a bit, but I wanted to run a faster time,” he said. “It wasn’t hard trying to catch them. I paced myself really well and I was just patient keeping an eye on them.”

While he wanted to go faster, Stoby said he has been joined by his wife and child and had been spending time with them. “I was only able to do one speed session for the week,” he said. “I still have that sub 17 5K in mind and I’ll get back to training by next week.”

Crumpler who held off Rosmond Johnson to win the women’s division in 21:50.6, in a speed work tune up for the upcoming Boston Marathon, said she didn’t want Stoby to catch her.

“He caught me well before the line and I tried to keep up with him, but he’s too fast,” she said. “I kind of knew he’d catch me and that was fine. It was a fun race. It was one of the closest ones in a long time. Rosmond was right behind me and I thought she was going to overtake me around two miles. She tucked in behind me and pushed me along and I stayed ahead of her but only by a few seconds.”

Crumpler who has two training Marathons under her belt already this year, said she’s aiming to do slightly better than the 3:23 she did in Boston a year ago. “It will depend on weather conditions on the day,” she said. “We’ll see. I’m just going to enjoy it really.”

Virgin Gorda resident Vincent Fournier ended Reuben Stoby’s year long winning streak in local road races during Saturday’s season opening Blenheim Trust 5K Series tour stop in Road Town, breaking the eight year-old course record in the process.

Fournier controlled the pace from the start to win the circumnavigation of Road Town from the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds and return in 17 minutes, 00.91 seconds. His time eclipsed Steven Asson’s 17:09.17 from 2008. Stoby finished in a personal best of 17:07 with Tarique “Tweety” Moses third in 18:14, in the race that saw five runners under 19 minutes.

“Every time I race, I try to do my best, I set my own things, if somebody beats me, he beats me, if he doesn’t he doesn’t, that’s just how it goes,” Fournier pointed out. “Today, I wanted to do 3:30 per kilometer. I ended up doing it and I’m proud of myself. I ended up winning too, so that was a great thing.”

Stoby said Fournier pushed a good pace and he was feeling comfortable for the second mile and was right there with him. “At the end, I just couldn’t keep up, he was very consistent so it was a very good run,” Stoby explained. “About the fourth kilometer, he put on a stretch that I couldn’t cover.”

Fournier said he heard Stoby’s breathing throughout the race. “I never really knew if he was going to give a surge or not, so in the end, I was happy to see him enter (the A. O. Shirley Grounds) way behind and I was like ‘yes, I got this.'”

Stoby is now looking forward to an interesting battle in defending his Male Road Racing Athlete of the Year title.

“This certainly makes the season very interesting with Fournier in the mix now, so I’m looking forward,” Stoby stated. “The aim this year is to run 16 (minutes) in the 5K and I’ve managed 17:07, smashing my personal best, so a very interesting season ahead.”

Katrina Crumpler who missed last year’s series because of injuries, returned and wiped out Claire-Louise Whiley’s women’s mark of 22.45 from 2011, with a time of 20:11.83.

“It was really fast and I think the conditions were really good, nice and cool, a little bit of wind,” she noted. “The first mile was too fast for me. I was trying to keep up with the boys and did about 6:20 which was really quick, so I backed off a bit over the second mile because of the hill and picked it up again.”

Final Results: Men1. Vincent Fournier, 17 minutes 00.91 seconds, (New course record. Old record, Stephen Asson 17:09.17, March 14, 2008.)  2. Reuben Stoby, 17:07.  3. Tarique Moses, 18:14.  4. Saturday’s finale of the Blenheim Trust 5K Series–which also marked the inaugural National 5K Championships–saw Reuben Stoby and Katrina Crumpler–emerging as overall series winners after the finale in Road Town.

Stoby had a winning time of 17 minutes and 52 seconds and was followed by Tarique Creque in 18:17 and Julius Farley third in 18:53. Early leader Khiry Creque finished fourth in 19:44.

Stoby said when Creque set the pace, he wanted to see what it would be like and thought Creque wanted to slow it down. “Knowing that he and Tarique are 800m runners, I couldn’t take that chance and I went ahead early and I was surprised that they didn’t follow me,” pointed out Stoby, who said he was a bit tired from the Virgin Gorda Half Marathon. “I was really hoping that I wouldn’t have to fight too hard to win today. I wanted to win, even though I knew I’d won the series, knowing the competition would be stiff, I wanted to go for the victory nevertheless.”

Moses said Stoby won fair and square. “He went out hard and kept from me and every time he saw me gaining, he pushed the pace and I was trying to close on him, but he won. He’s the 5K champion,” Moses stated, noting he’s not in condition for the 5K. “I came out, I ran and thought I could have held my own against him. I challenged him but he kept from me and he won.”

Early pace setter Creque said he pushed the pace trying to take Stoby out of his comfort zone. “But, I saw how good a shape he’s in because he’s really a beast,” Creque said. “I really didn’t train for the 5K. I came out to see what I could do. I’ve heard a lot about him and I wanted to see what it was like to run with him. He’s incredible. He’s in better shape than I expected.”

Crumpler – coming off winning the Virgin Gorda Half Marathon a week earlier and ahead of this weekend’s Buffalo Marathon – said her legs felt a bit tired. “I felt fine in the first mile and I was quite excited and tried to do a quick race and by mile two I was like, ‘oh, my legs are tired,'” she explained. “I think I did feel the effects of racing in Virgin Gorda, but I enjoyed it.”

After challenging courses in his last two races, Reuben Stoby extended his winning streak during Saturday’s Blenheim Trust 5K Series race in Paraquita Bay, dubbed the Paraquita Beast.

Stoby–in a final tune up for this weekend’s 4th Virgin Gorda Half Marathon–covered the 3.1 miles loop in 19 minutes and 18 seconds. He was followed by Julius Farley who overhauled Rodrigo Dos Santos and placed second in 19:54 with Dos Santos turning in a time of 20:14.

Katrina Crumpler–in her first individual race after running a personal best of 3 hours 22 minutes and 53 seconds in the Boston Marathon–was the women’s winner in 21:55. Rosmond Johnson followed in 24:24 and Anna Kinkead was third in 25:07.

With just one incline that didn’t exceed 250 feet, Stoby said the course was a “baby” compared to the Dive BVI 10k race on Virgin Gorda the week before.

“It was a cool race for me and I’m glad I didn’t have to push it too hard as the competition really didn’t push it too much,” he explained. “I want to save it for the Virgin Gorda Half Marathon and I’d been doing a bit of hill work so my legs were feeling a little bit tired, so I wasn’t trying to too hard.”

Farley–who anchored the winning relay team over 10 miles a week earlier in the Tortola Torture–said he too was running conservative. “I didn’t go out hard at all as I’m preparing for the Virgin Gorda Half,” he said. “I’m not too ambitious but I’ll settle for finishing in the first five in Virgin Gorda. I understand the competition will be stiff, so I’ll be contented with that.”

The National 5K Championships is set for Saturday, May 16 in Road Town, starting and ending on the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.

Rosmond Johnson and Jenny McGivor took advantage of the 5 min head start and escaped without being caught by a tidal wave of stampeding men that included Reuben Stoby, who clocked 18:13 when the 3rd race of the Blenheim Trust 5K series was held on Beef Island on Saturday April 18, 2015.

Johnson and McGivor played a waiting game at the front with McGivor tucked in behind Johnson for 2 miles before Johnson moved away to take the win in 21:58.08. McGivor finished in 22:10.08.

Both times were personal bests for the two ladies who were the only ones to successfully beat the roaring tsunami of men storming up behind. Kay Reddy was the third in the ladies in 23:57.28.

Stoby preserved his unbeaten record this year when he calmly led the men home in 18:13.99 to also take his second win of the 5-race series.

Julius Farley, who led for the first kilometre, and 12-year-old Derek Pettigrew chased but did not challenge Stoby. Farley finished second in 18:48.62, a personal best, while the talented Pettigrew clocked 19:48.14, also a personal best.

The power walkers made a pact to share the podium and Sebbie beat his younger brother Xavier for boys 1/2 in the Morgan household.

As the series heats up, the 4th race is the infamous Paraquita Beast on Saturday May 2, 2015 at 7.00am with registration from 6.30am. The race starts and finishes in front of HLSCC main entrance. The first 2 miles follows the popular college classic course along the agricultural road, runners then cross the main road to loop the Marine College.

The final race in the series will be the Dual Carriageway Dash on May 16, 2015 held in conjunction with the National 5k.

Fresh off winning the Dive BVI 5K Series on the outer island of Virgin Gorda a week earlier with a course, Reuben Stoby made the field of 54 know his intentions from the first step as he sprinted away from the pack, in Saturday’s Blenheim Trust 5K tour stop in Carrot Bay.

Stoby led from start to finish, meandering his way through the winding streets of the scenic north coast seaside village on the looped course that had an incline going and coming, to win in 17 minutes and 41 seconds for the fastest time recorded on the route.

Tarique Moses and Julius Farlery followed in 18:14 and 19:35 respectively.

Stoby revealed that his plan developed two weeks ago was simple—go hard from the start—as he had the benefit of training on the course a few mornings.

“I didn’t think that a lot of people might want to start out so quickly and that is something I’ve been working on—my start—trying to go out fast and find a decent rhythm somewhere in the middle of the race,” Stoby explained. “I’m glad I was able to keep up to the plan but it wasn’t easy knowing that Moses could be a threat.”

Moses said it was a good race but Stoby’s early move caught him by surprise. “I didn’t think he would have gone out so hard and hold that pace,” Moses said. “When I started closing on him on the hill (returnning), he kept looking back at me. Every time he saw I was gaining ground on him, he would pick it up, then relax. He actually got me on the hill and from there he won the race. But, I’m going to work harder—I’m coming back for him—he’ll see me again.”

Race director Kay Reddy said Stoby’s time was amazing. She said even though the course is flat, going and coming, Sugar Mill Hill is high enough to put lactic acid in one’s legs—coupled with the wind and a little bit of early morning heat. “It’s not the easiest course of the series and it’s an absolute incredible time,” she said. “If he can do that on this course, I can see the time coming down even further.”

For the first time in series history, there was a kids short course in which Charlie Potgeiter edged Sebbie Morgan.
