Over 70 Boats Registered For 2016 BVI Dinghy Championships

By RBVIYC

3ef01173-8290-46d7-8531-cd929eb66a63The 15th edition of the BVI Dinghy Championships is set to be one of the biggest ever with over 70 sailors registered to compete on 21 and 22 May.

Sailors from the BVI, USVI and Puerto Rico will take to the water in Optimist, Optimist Green fleet, Laser, Laser Radial, Open Bic and IC24 events for the honour of being named the 2016 BVI Dinghy Champion.

Hosted at Nanny Cay, racing will take place in the Sir Francis Drake Channel on two course areas, getting underway at 10:00 on Saturday.

26 sailors are registered in the Optimist Championship fleet with awards up to grabs in three divisions: white (age 10 and younger), blue (age 11 and 12) and red (age 13 to 15).

2015 winner Mia Nicolosi will be back to defend her title in the Optimist Championship fleet.  Pipping her brother Teddy to the post by just one point in 2015, Nicolosi has been the form sailor throughout the 2016 season.  Turning 13 in June, this will be Nicolosi’s last regatta in the blue fleet and for that title she will see her biggest challenges coming from the BVIs Nathan Haycraft, and Kyle Roose, Lake Sanford and Mathieu Dale from St Croix and Caroline Sibilly from St Thomas.

Consistently taking first in the red fleet this year, the BVI’s Rayne Duff holds the titles from the MLK Regatta, VIODA Champioship, Sunshine State Regatta and the Cruzan Open but has missed out on the overall wins to Nicolosi.  Duff has been training hard and will make the most of racing on home waters to return the title to the BVI.

The white fleet has just three sailors registered but national pride is at stake with Ryan Lettsome from the BVI, competing against Iola Kohl from St Croix and Luca Perino from Puerto Rico for division honours.

With 28 sailors registered for the Optimist Green Fleet, the stage is set for a great challenge.  The Optimist green fleet is for those sailors new to racing and the youngest competitor in the mix is just 8 years old.

Leading the way for the BVI is Samuel Allen, who has posted top five results at all his regattas so far this year, and Noah George.  There are a number of BVI sailors making their international racing debut, including De’Sani Thomas, Sophia Jara, Kael Chalwell, Ethan George and Victoria Rowlette – good luck to them all.

The visitors to watch in the green fleet include Milo Miller from St Croix who claimed the honours at the Cruzan Open and VIODA Championship whilst Puerto Rico’s Jose Guillermo Diaz has two second place finishes to his name this year.

Colin Rathbun will be hoping to defend his title in the Laser and will be up against the BVI’s 2015 Youth Worlds representative from 2015, Daniel Petrovic – can youth win out over experience?

In the Laser Radial class, defending champion Sam Morrell will be battling it out for honours with BVI sailors Thad Lettsome, Jerome Parkins, Stephon Ganga, Stephen Ganga and St Croix’s Taylor Hasson and Ethan Hanley.

Four IC24s and a J24 are expected to line up in the keelboat fleet.  Helming the RBVIYCs Black Pearl will be Eddie Brockbank with Giles Wood skippering Latitude 18, duking it out against Ted Reshetiloff (Intac), Bob Philips (Roosta) and Aaron Gardner competing with his J24 Bravissimo.

VIODA Triple Crown
The Optimist Championship fleet sailors are not only vying for the 2016 BVI title but also for the 2016 VIODA Triple Crown.  With results from the VIODA Opti Championship in St Thomas, St Croix’s Cruzan Open and the BVI Dinghy Championships all counting towards an overall score the heat is on.  Mia Nicolosi (ISV) is currently leading the way ahead of 2015 champion Rayne Duff (IVB) with Victoria Flately (ISV) holding off Mathieu Dale (ISV) for third.

J111 Spike, skippered by Sam Talbot won the 2016 Governor’s Cup on Saturday 23 April.

Twelve boats took to the race course to duke it out for the honour of adding their name to the Governor’s Cup trophy.   A gloomy morning greeted the competitors but despite the promise of a wet day, the rain held off the race track.  Starting off Nanny Cay, the course took competitors out to Pelican Island, up round Dead Chest Island, across to Hog Valley Green just off Road Harbour and then back to finish at Nanny Cay.

Racing was tight in all of the fleets with the Jib and Main class even offering up a photo finish after three and half hours of racing.  Line honours went toSpike with an elapsed time of just over 2 hours.

First to start were the Jib and Main class with Kara Patterson, helming Dances with Whales leading the fleet across the start line.  Class line honours and the overall prize went to Bill Hirst with his new Jeanneau 51, Adagio.  Pyjamas, Wicked Winch and Dances with Whales all finished within two minutes of each other with Wicked Winch claiming second on corrected time and Dances with Whales third.

Next to go were the Performance Cruisers and Multihull classes, starting at 11:20 followed by the Racing class 15 minutes later.   John Cook’s Tatonkawas first home, with an elapsed time of 2 hours, 21 minutes and 4 seconds, followed by Girasoli and Steve Roose with Diva.  The class win went to Keith LiGreci’s Girasoli with Tatonka second and Diva third.

The only multihull in the action was John Hayes’ Wildfire who finished eighth overall.

Spike, skippered by Sam Talbot charged around the course to claimed line honours and the overall win. Chris Haycraft’s Pipe Dream took second in class and third overall, just 26 seconds behind Girasoli. Third in racing was Aaron Gardner with his IC24 Bravissimo, also finishing in fourth overall.  Melges 24 Firewater rounded out the racing fleet in fourth.

Governor John Duncan presented the prizes at Nanny Cay, congratulating all the competitors for a great day on the water.

Thank you to our sponsors, Champagne Bollinger, TICO and Nanny Cay; to the race committee and all of the competitors.

The next event on the Royal BVI Yacht Club racing calendar is the BVI Dinghy Championships on 21 and 22 May.

7 Optimist sailors from the Royal BVI Yacht Club traveled to St Croix April 16 -17 to compete in the 2016 St Croix Yacht Club Crucian Open with all 4 of the Championship fleet sailors reaching the podium in their divisions.

The regatta hosted 72 competitors racing in the 420, Sunfish and Optimist classes on Saturday and Sunday.

Unpredictable 2-7 knot southerly winds brought light and shifty conditions that challenged the competitor’s patience but all of the RBVIYC racers finished well in their respective fleets.

In the 24 boat Championship fleet, Ryan Lettsome finished 21st overall, winning third place in the Under 10, White fleet.

In the Blue fleet for the 11-12 age group, Nathan Haycraft took second place and seventh overall, with Kyle Roose placing third in group and twelfth overall.

Rayne Duff held the lead after the first day of racing with 3, first place finishes under his belt and never finishing outside the top three. A less successful day two saw him drop to second overall but retaining the Red fleet honours in the 13-15 age group.

Samuel Allen was top of the pack for the BVI Green fleeters, finishing fifth overall. A consistent weekend for Allen included 2 second place finishes and just one result outside the top 10. Noah George made a blistering start to his regatta with third place in the first two races of the weekend. Not quite able to maintain that level, he continued to finish inside the top half of the fleet throughout and ended his regatta in eighth overall.

A solid first day for Nici Haycraft saw him take the race win in race 7 but, sitting out Sunday, he slid to 15 overall.

A great weekend for the RBVIYC junior sailing programme and congratulations to the team on another excellent regatta.

Thad Lettsome Wins At Antigua Laser Open
Thad Lettsome added another prize to his trophy cabinet this weekend when he won the Laser Radial class at the Antigua Laser Open Championship.

As well as winning the Laser Radial class, Lettsome finished third overall behind local sailors, Olympian Karl James and Jules Mitchell. Just one point kept him off the second place spot, an outstanding achievement as both were sailing with a standard rig (a bigger sail than the Radial).

A great result for the 14 year old who will now turn his attention to the IC24 Black Pearl and the 45th BVI Spring Regatta.

St Thomas International Regatta
It was “fresh to frightening” at the 43rd St Thomas International Regatta over the weekend. Aaron Gardner’s  J24 Bravissimo finished in 5th place in the CSA non-spinnaker class after sailing a consistent series. Just one place behind them was Keith LeGreci’s Girasoli team. Chris Haycraft’s Pipedream suffered gear failure on day one and was forced to miss the second race of the day finishing in 5th place at the end of the three-day regatta. Sam Morrell, helming IC24 Lord Charlton, came in in tenth place overall.

Ian Walker Joins BVI Youth Sailors Training Session

The Royal BVI Yacht Club youth sailing programme was treated to a special guest this week when world renowned sailor Ian Walker dropped by to join Tuesday’s training session.

The winning skipper of the 2014/2015 Volvo Ocean Race and double Olympic silver medalist visited the sailing centre at Nanny Cay and went out on the water with the team.

Walker skippered Abu Dhabi to victory in the 2014/2015 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, his third circumnavigation with the race having skippered Abu Dhabi in 2011/2012 and Green Dragon in the 2008/2009 races.  At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, he won the silver medal in the 470 class before switching to the Star and picking up another silver in 2000.  In 2004 he coached Shirley Robertson’s team to gold at the Athens Olympics in the Yngling.

The fleets of Optimists and Lasers headed out after a quick briefing onshore just like a normal Tuesday session but with an extra pair of coaching eyes analysing their performance.

Walker observed the first races from the coach boat, jumped into a Laser with Dawson van Zoost to run through some finer tuning points and then, for the final race of the session, he took on the race team in an Optimist – a far cry from the 300 tonne boat he was skippering just last week!

Giving the team a run for their money in the pre-start build up and on the start line he suffered slightly from lack of boat speed giving Team BVI the win.

Back ashore, at the debrief, he chatted with the race team about starting strategies, downwind techniques and rules, emphasising the importance of sail set up, practice and learning to be fast through the water. The questions poured forth from the young sailors, keen to hear more on topics ranging from watch systems on the Volvo Ocean Race and prize money to the theory of apparent wind.

A huge thank you from the Royal BVI Yacht Club to Ian for taking the time out to join the sailors and to Nanny Cay Hotel and Marina for your support.  Ian, you are welcome back anytime!

Rayne Duff once again stood on the podium in Miami, claiming the red fleet victory and third overall at the 2016 Sunshine State Championships held in Miami from 12-13 March.

Three Team BVI Sailors traveled to Miami for the regatta, Duff, Nathan Haycraft (blue fleet) and Ryan Lettsome (white fleet).

A fleet of 195 boas descended on the Key Biscayne Yacht Club and the competition was fierce. Entries, whilst dominated by the USA, also included sailors from the BVI, USVI, St Lucia and Canada.

In the White fleet, Ryan Lettsome sailed a solid regatta to finish in ninth place, an excellent achievement at his first major regatta out of the region. A black flag in Race 3 for crossing the start line early sets the theme for the weekend for the Team BVI sailors but fortunately was one Lettsome was able to discard.

Nathan Haycraft had a challenging weekend with three starting penalties that cost him dearly in the overall results. Only able to discard one score, Haycraft was forced to count an additional 145 points to an otherwise consistent series of race scores.

The red fleet, for sailors aged 13 to 15 went down to the wire for Rayne Duff who also fell victim to the black flag but, finishing on a high, he pulled out a bullet in the final race to secure his position and third overall.

Team BVI congratulate Mia Nicolosi from St Thomas who took the overall victory, securing five bullets from the seven race series.

Seven optimist sailors represented the Royal BVI Yacht Club at the St. Thomas VIODA Optimist Championship on 5-6 March 2016.

The two day event saw tight racing that proved favorable for BVI racers with Rayne Duff and Samuel Allen both rounding out their weekend in second overall.

Course conditions were moderate with wind speeds ranging from 8 to 12 knots across both days. Samuel Allen had an outstanding Saturday in the green fleet, finishing the day in second place.  In the Championship fleet, Kyle Roose found himself in seventh place overnight after posting three top five finishes. Rayne Duff was a solid second place overall after battling back and forth with St. Thomas’ Mia Nicolosi for the race wins.

The Championship fleet ran four races on Sunday while the green fleet completed eight. Nathan Haycraft came out firing with second place finishes in the first two races which helped him move up from eleventh place to eighth place overall.

Kyle Roose posted another fifth but also his worst two races to finish a respectable tenth overall. Max Reshetiloff and Ryan Lettsome both had two top ten finishes which advanced their overall standings to 16th and 21st place respectively.

Rayne Duff finished the regatta strong with two first place finishes in the last races which secured his second place overall.

In the green fleet, Noah George’s good starting techniques helped him secure a ninth place overall while Samuel Allen continued to finish at the top of the pack locking up second place overall.

The total event entries were fourteen green fleet competitors and twenty six championship fleet racers. The seven BVI sailors consisted of two green fleeters – Samuel Allen and Noah George – along with five championship fleet sailors – Kyle Roose, Nathan Haycraft, Max Reshetiloff, Ryan Lettsome and Rayne Duff.

Great job Team BVI and, as always, thank you to our partners at the Moorings for their support for our youth team.

The British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee (BVIOC), in collaboration with Canada Sport for Life (CS4L), the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) and, with full endorsement from the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare conducted a successful two day workshop on Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) and Physical Literacy at the Fort Burt Hotel conference room on February 29 and March 1, 2016. Mr. Richard Way, CEO of Sport for Life Society, Canada was the facilitator.

At the Opening Ceremony Mr. Ephraim Penn, president, BVIOC, Hon. Myron V. Walwyn, Minister for Education & Culture and Ms. Ivy George, National Coordinator, Health Promotion Services, Ministry of Health and Social Development addressed the gathering.

The 68 participants comprised physical education teachers, doctors from the BVI Health Services Authority, nurses, chairpersons and members of national sporting federations and personnel from the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Physical Literacy which means ‘having the fundamental movement and sport skills and motivation that enable individuals to read their environment and make appropriate decisions, while moving confidently and with control in a wide range of physical activities’, was of major interest to the participants.

The premise of the program is that it will pave the way for residents of the BVI to live a healthier and productive life that will help to manage the cost of health care.

Five sporting federations successfully submitted applications to benefit from the LTAD programme. Athletics, Rugby, Football, Tennis and Sailing will shortly embark on the planning of the multi-stage training, competition and recovery pathway for their sport.

Mr. Andy Bickerton of the BVI Football Association said, “The workshop was educational and very relevant. If we practice what we learnt and employ them in our sport, our athletes should be healthier and the occurrence of non- communicable diseases would lessen. It has pointed us in the right direction and we of the BVI Football Association will ensure that we work with participants instead of concentrating only on the elite players, in an effort to sustain our sport.”

Nurse Cherry-Ann George Smith of the BVI Health Services Authority said, “It is timely and applicable to what is being done with community healthcare. It is a means of primary prevention in non- communicable diseases and chronic ailments. I see where it may be used for all our clients. This has opened an avenue for networking with different sports. It was an eye opener and I am pleased to have been a part of the experience.”

“The workshop was informative and well structured,” said Mr. Elsworth Phillips, president of the BVI Swim Federation. “Mr. Richard Way made the concepts easy to understand. I now see where the BVI Swim Federation can partner with the sailing association with strength and conditioning, their swimming skills and water safety.”

Mrs. Angeleta Bernard, local coordinator of the LTAD, BVI was pleased with the enthusiasm of the participants and will be meeting with the committee, chaired by Mr. Penn to initiate the launch of LTAD, BVI and Physical Literacy in the national federations, schools and communities.

Six sailors representing the Royal BVI Yacht Club competed in the 2016 Pan Pepin International Dinghy Regatta hosted at Club Nautico San Juan in Puerto Rico from February 5 – 7.

The event comprised 72 competitors in the Optimist, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, and Sunfish classes. Racers representing Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, British Virgin Islands, St. Croix and Antigua competed.  The regatta was the second largest junior sailing event in the history of Puerto Rico.

The three day event held challenging conditions for racers. The race course in San Juan harbor saw light and shifting winds all weekend. Wind conditions on Friday and Saturday ranged from 2-7 knots, while on Sunday the breeze increased to 15 knots in the afternoon.

Team BVI sailed incredibly well despite the variable winds, with 5 out of 6 sailors taking home trophies.

BVI optimist sailors included Rayne Duff, Nathan Haycraft, Ryan Lettsome, and Max Reshetiloff, along with Jason Putley and Thad Lettsome sailing in the Laser Radial class.

Thad Lettsome finished third overall in the Laser Radial class with Jason Putley one spot ahead in second place.

Red Fleeter Rayne Duff stole the show with seven first place finishes over nine races! Duff finished first in the Optimist red fleet and first place overall.
