Last night, Sunday July 5, 2015, the Pythons beat the Hawks, 13–9, in a close game that was finally settled on a Darier Malone drive and a fielder’s error in the 5th inning that gave the pythons some breathing space.

With all their big guns, seemingly controlling the game from the plate, the Pythons found the Hawks tough to put away, something which should trouble them as without a few silly errors, the Hawks could easily have claimed a famous victory.

However, with Valissia Brathwaite on hand to wrap up the innings, despite giving away a couple of late runs, the Pythons hung on to remain unbeaten in three seasons and look odds on favourite to add the 2015 Championship to their collection.

The Pythons had 9 hits for the runs and the winning pitcher was Thea Cooke.

In other games, the Pythons also recorded a 20–5 victory over the West End Warriors, with Tammy Phillips going 3 for 3, scoring 3 runs with a homer and 4 RBI. Sheniqua Fahie, the winning pitcher, with a no hitter performance, went 4 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.

The Hawks also beat the Warriors, 12-1, with Riiah Durante taking the win and J’heane Niles going 2 for 2 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.

The Republica Dominicana overcame the Mobsters, 12-6, with Reynold Corum taking the win and Edward Venzen going 3 for 4 with 1 run scored and 4 RBI. Kevin Faulkner went 4 for 3 with 3 runs scored, 1 home run and 1 RBI. Clifford Green went 2 for 2 scored 2 and also hit a double and a triple with 3 RBI.

For the Mobsters, Selwyn Dawson went 2 for 3 with 2 runs a triple and 1 RBI. Andrew Stout went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored a double a triple and 1 RBI, whilst Richard Jack was 3 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Power Outage then beat the Pirates, 12-11, with Jeremy Penn the winning pitcher, going 3 for 2 with 2 runs scored, a double, and 2 RBI. Khoy Frett went 3 for 4 with 2 runs, 2 homers and 6 RBI.

For the Pirates, Allison Leonard scored 3 runs, hit a homer and had 3 RBI, whilst Allen Smith was 1 for 2 with 3 RBI.

Republica Dominicana also had a 16-8 win over the Reds with Yervis Rodriquez taking the win and Eddy Morales going 4 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. Faulkner went 3 for 4 with 1 run, a triple and 2 RBI, whilst Angel Rosario went 3 for 3 with 3 runs.

For the Reds Carlos Casey was 3 for 3 with 3 runs, a triple and 1 RBI and Michael Vanterpool was 2 for 2 with 1 run and 2 RBI.

Stoby over powers Williamson, Farley in last mile of 10K

During training his runs, Reuben Stoby ran the Ceres Juices 10K Series course from Carrot Bay to Smugglers Cove and return, faster than the 42 minutes and 20 seconds he covered it on Saturday.

But then, he ran alone. There was no cat and mouse game and he didn’t have pressure from Guy Williamson nor Julius Farley over the scenic hilly course on Tortola’s north west coast that also offered a bit of off road running.

“The plan was just to stay with the guys because the pace was really good so I had to be careful not to fall behind,” noted Stoby, joking that it was revenge from two years ago when he was beaten by Williamson. “It was a really good run. I was thankful that the guys pushed the pace this morning and we were able to have a competitive race throughout.”

Stoby said his strategy was to survive the steep climb out of Long Bay, then ease into the pace over the final two miles and on the last incline before the Carrot Bay decent, it was just him and Williamson as Farley fell off the pace. “I got the confidence to push a little bit more and noticed that he fell back,” Stoby said.

Williamson said the pace was fast and with the hills it mixed the terrain and a lot of hamstring and quad muscles were employed up and down the hills. “It’s really tiring on your body,” noted Williamson who played rugby on Friday night in nearby Capoons Bay. “Reuben showed some class again at the end. I didn’t have enough stamina to keep up in the end.”

Farley who pressed the pace up the hills said he developed some nasty stitches in the last mile. “I tried to press on but I just couldn’t keep up,” he said. “But it was a good race.”

In a similar fashion, women’s winner Rosmond Johnson walked on the steepest parts of the course but was able to keep Melissa Brunner who loves running hills at bay. “It was a bit challenging, the road was rocky and the hill was steep but I survived,” Johnson stated. “At one point, I thought Melissa was going to pass me, because I’m not really good at hills but I managed. I walked up and ran down fast. So I made it and I’m happy.”

Brunner said she faster on the incline then struggles on the decent. “I tried really hard to pass her on the up and tired to keep close to her on the down but not today,” she pointed out.

Team BVI ran out 2-1 winners over the Creoles to lift the Nations Cup at the football tournament finals at the Greenland Playfield in East End on Sunday June 28, 2015.

The final of the Gillette-sponsored Nations Cup lived up to the pre-match hype of being a tense, competitive affair, but it was the youngsters of the BVI team that drew first blood when Riaul Roberts calmly slotted home in the 12th minute.

However, the Creoles refused to lay down and concede victory, coming back at the BVI team with grim determination and just six minutes later star striker, Denron Daniel, netted the equaliser from the penalty spot.

The score remained deadlocked at 1-1 until early in the second half when Rafael Savoury took advantage of a blunder in the Creole defense to sneak in and scored what turned out to be the winner.

The youngsters defended well as a unit to see out the game, 2-1, and claimed the title of Champions, sparking wild scenes of celebrations from the players and fans alike.

Team BVI Coach, Avondale Williams, was also proud of his team’s performance. “They worked hard and their concentration level was excellent. They deserved this moment and have played well together for the whole tournament.”

St Vincent failed to show up for the third place match and victory was forfeited to Europe.

Three of the top annual rugby awards presented by the BVI Rugby Football Union went to youth players led by Austin Keil who captured the player of the year, the most prestigious presented at the annual dinner which was held at Scrub Island last evening, June 27.

Keil, 18, of Cedar School, has had a break out season and scored the final try for the national team against Curacao in May.

“It feels pretty good and its just really nice to be here with all my friends who also won awards. And its really fun. Everyone on the team has been working really hard and it shows in the results at the end of the year,” Keil told BVI Platinum News.

He plans to attend university in California in the fall where he will try out froSanta Barbra rugby team.

Brothers Victor Amparo and Kenrick Thomas were awarded the Under-19 player of the year and most improved player, respectively.

“It feels pretty good to have won this award,” Amparo stated.

He recalled the under-19 team’s encounter in Trinidad and Tobago and his experience gained playing for the national side.

Thomas said he recently started playing rugby and never missed a practice session.

“My fitness is really advanced thanks to rugby. The discipline I have learned has really helped me. I am around all the players with different cultures and different experiences; this has been a great learning experience for me,” Thomas stated.

Chairman of the Rugby Union, Ronan Kuczaj said rugby on the island has benefited from the emergence of younger players.

“All of our results have come form the under-19s. They had good performance in the Mexico 7s and more recently the three games in the 2015 North American Caribbean Rugby Association’s 15s. We have a good core of kids who have come through the under-19 program and school coaching sessions. They are the future and lifeblood of rugby in the BVI,” Kuczaj stated.

BVI’s youth sailors face fierce competition at St Thomas International Optimist Regatta

Top youth sailor, Rayne Duff fought hard, but settled for fourth at St. Thomas International Optimist Regatta and Clinic which was held at St. Thomas Yacht Club from June 15-21.

The first day of races started off at an area set just past Cow and Calf rocks outside of Cowpet Bay with medium to light winds, but very choppy waves which sailors found very difficult to deal with at times.

The team responded very well after the first two races and the kids were quickly able to adapt to the conditions, which showed with wins in the third and fourth race from Rayne Duff.

Day two of the racing was very similar conditions, but after a strong showing from Duff he went in for the day with an overall position of 1st with one day to go.

On the third and final day of fleet racing, the wind picked up dramatically with many of the sailors struggling to cope with the conditions and keep their boats flat.

Duff won the first race of the day, but fierce competitor Teddy Nicolosi of USVI knew he had to cover Rayne and force him into getting some bad results in order to stand a chance of winning.

Nicolosi successfully covered Duff tack for tack in spite of both finishing deep in the pack at 45th and 49th, respectively, in the 62-boat advanced optimist fleet.

Nicolosi’s game plan was to use this poor score as his one throw-out. Unfortunately, Duff had finished 17th in an earlier race and had to keep that double-digit score since his 49th place now turned into his one worst score throw-out.

That put Duff a nearly 20 points behind Nicolosi going into the last race of the regatta.

Nicolosi finished the regatta in 1st place overall with Duff finishing in fourth. For the BVI, Nathan Haycraft finished 19th overall after a strong collection of results on the final day.

James Rajic-Knight finished 48th, Maxwell Reshetiloff finished in 58th with Kyle Roose close behind in 61st. Most of the competitors said it had been one of the most competitive regattas they had ever sailed in.

The regatta also featured team racing. The BVI team won 2 out of their 5 races, which unfortunately wasn’t enough to qualify for the semi finals. 10 kids from the BVI took part in the event with 5 in opti championship fleet and five in opti fleet.

BVI’s Team: Rayne Duff, Nathan Haycraft, James Rajic-Knight, Maxwell Reshetiloff and Kyle Roose, Anya Reshetiloff, Ryan Lettsome, Nicolas Haycraft, Connor MacCallum and Scott Kirk.

The Royal BVI Yacht Club thanked Moorings, Nanny Cay, NAGICO Insurance as well as St. Thomas Yacht Club for running such a successful event.
