Despite another inspiring performance from Malchy Payne and Kmoy Walters, the Elmore Stoutt High School Junior Boys Varsity team came up short, 39-46, in game 3 of the St John-St Thomas Interscholastic Athletic Association Tournament against Charlotte Amalie Hawks at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex on Sunday April 12, 2015.

The decisive win gave the Hawks the Championship after they had won game one last Friday and then suffered a game two defeat, 50-27, to the Rams on Saturday, April 11, 2015.

After grabbing a quickfire lead, the Rams found themselves on the back foot and chasing the game from as early as two minutes in the first quarter. The Hawks stretched to first a five point lead and then a nine point lead before the Rams pulled back to within three.

However, with a turn over and a couple of missed opportunities, the Rams were down eight at the break, 9-17.

With the Rams seemingly going to a man to man marking ploy to stop the rampaging Hawks, once again the Rams found themselves chasing the ball as the lead reached eleven points. Once again the Rams clawed their way back into the game, reducing the deficit to nine, then seven and then five as the home crowd began to get right behind the Elmore Stoutt High School boys.

The halftime score was 23-26 to the Hawks.

A defensive battle highlighted the third quarter with the Hawks finally opening the lead, again on a couple of fast breaks and some impatient shooting by the Rams, to end the period, 31-39.

In the 4th quarter, the Hawks took control of the ball for the first three minutes, until Sanjwan France notched a basket to reduce the gap to just six. Jamoi Levons and Michael Richardson also made baskets, but visits to the free throw line gave the Hawks the breathing space they needed.

Levons splashed a three to bring the scores to 36-42 into the last 90 seconds, but the Hawks had done enough to claim the victory and with it the Championship.

Payne finished with 11 points, Walters and Ajai Frett, 9, whilst Richardson notched 7.

For the Hawks, Daveon Plumber hit 14 and Vallon Toiussaint, 13.

Spencer Wins National Sprint Champs in Record Breaking Time

In the BVI Triathlon Federation’s National Sprint Champs, newcomer Jenny McIvor vanquished the other ladies to gain her first title as national champion, while grizzled veteran Antony Spencer placed the men’s crown on his head for the second time, and set a new record, after taking 39 seconds seconds off 2011 Chris Ghiorse’s time.

The National Sprint Champs are held at Sandy Ground boatyard, Soper’s Hole and comprise a “sprint distance” 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike ride and a five-kilometre run.

The men’s division saw three national champions battling for glory again. This was reflected in the finish times which were considerably faster than 2014 with Antony, second placer Richard Morgan, and third placer Russell Crumpler, all posting better times than last year’s winning time. Russell was four minutes faster than his winning time in 2013 and Richard one minute faster than his 2014 championship time. This may be in part be due to faster swim time generated by the Barracuda that shadowed the competitors on the opening swim leg.

Fortunately the silver assassin turned out to be no more trouble than a delinquent halibut and swam off into the murky waters beyond, possibly deterred by the sight of Dan Mitchell in his onesie, enough to put even the most hardy water born predator off their brunch – Iain Walker

Mirroring previous events, Spencer exited the water well ahead of Morgan, only to lose the advantage to Morgan, the stronger rider, on the bike leg. Into the run, Spencer started just ahead of Morgan, with Crumpler ready to pounce in third.

This was a battle royale, as Spencer and Morgan jousted for position, exchanging the lead six times, each digging deep to out gun the other. Just behind, and by no means out of contention, Crumpler was slowly winding them both in, hoping to profit from any lapse. At the one mile mark Morgan cracked and Spencer slipped away to cross the line two minutes ahead of his rival in a new course record of 1 hour 12 minutes and 57 seconds. Crumpler, just 37 seconds behind Morgan, took third.

Jenny has roared into form this year, shocking the other ladies with fast improvement. Tash Ruscheinski, true to form, powered through the swim and managed to maintain her lead, putting in a ride time 30 seconds faster than Jenny. However, Jenny, much fleeter of foot, posted one of the fastest runs of the day, decimated Tash’s lead with a run six minutes faster than Tash, finishing just under three minutes ahead. Kerry Dos Santos was third.

In the team event, Trott, Buckle & Crumple (Martin Trott, Laurent Keeble-Buckle and Kat Crumpler) fielding a very swimmer and runner were assured of their victory barring catastrophe and romped home 3 minutes and 43 seconds ahead of Team Blitz (Cayley Smit, Justin Smit, Jules Potgieter) despite Justin reeling back almost 4 minutes on the bike leg.

Rueben Stoby extended his winning streak to Saturday’s Dive BVI 10K Series race – the first of two races on different segments of the Virgin Gorda Half Marathon course – as a means of familiarizing runners for the May 9 race, for which 51 have already pre registered.

The next race will be on the tougher and scenic northern segment of the course including climbs to Nail Bay.

Stoby led Guy Williamson and Julius Farley to the line in 40 minutes and 16 seconds on a tour of southern Virgin Gorda, including the historic Coppermine. Williamson finished in 40:59 and Farley in 41:17.

“It was a pretty challenging course and my plan was not to go hard and I wasn’t familiar with the course either so I wanted to conserve as much as possible, since I didn’t know what to expect,” Stoby explained. “In case I ran off course, I wanted to stick with the guys just to make sure I knew where I was going. Not taking anything away from them, I know they can run the 10K very well, so I was careful not to go too early.”

Not being familiar with the full course, Stoby who ran 17:41 in the Dive BVI 5K last month, said he along with Williamson and Farley were playing a little cat and mouse to see who would take the lead. “I wasn’t going to do that,” Stoby quickly interjected, noting that he didn’t make his move until they were heading downhill from the Bregado Flax Educational Center. “I decided to make a run and see what happened. The guys chased a bit, but surprisingly, they didn’t hold on for the last 800m.”

Williamson said it was good to see Stoby back on island racing and he has upped the game. “It was a strong pace pretty much the whole course and it’s tough on the hills when you’re pushing that course as well,” he noted. “Between myself, Stoby and Farley, we pushed hard. Then with about 800m, Stoby took off, I tried to chase him down and I couldn’t quite do it.”

NiMade Oniasih won the women’s division in 51:40 and was followed by Kay Reddy (54:45) and Casey McNutt in 56:32.

Kmoy Walters and the Elmore Stoutt High School Junior Varsity Rams levelled the Championship series of the St Thomas- St John Interscholastic Athletic Association with a 50-27 rout of Charlotte Amalie High School on Saturday April 11, 2015 at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.

Walters scored 24 points to lead the Rams to victory while Malachy Payne added 15 points to level the series at 1-1 in the best of 3.

Rams coach, Bryant Thomas made some changes to the starting line-up following a 37-29 defeat in game one played on Friday April 10, 2015 in St Thomas, bringing in some bigger players and then tasking his team with being more aggressive from the start.
It certainly worked as the Rams raced into a 14-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and then snuffed out any danger of the Hawks getting back into the game during the second quarter, to reach the half, 28-16 ahead.

“The Hawks started to get back into the game early in the 2nd quarter as we eased off a little,” commented Thomas. “However, I told them to focus and get back to being aggressive.”

The third quarter was all the Rams as they went on a nine-point run and restricted their opponents to just one point in the entire quarter as it ended 39-17.

The Rams reverted to a zonal defense during the 4th quarter, happy to protect the lead and hit the Hawks on the break. A sequence of visits to the free throw line gave the visitors a glimmer, but a three pointer by Renric Mossac put the game to bed at 50-27 and sent the series to a decider.

The Rams suffered a 37-29 loss in the first game of the series, having seen the Hawks dominate the first half, which ended with the Hawks up 14.

Walters again led the Rams response as he knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and hit 8 of his 11 points in the third quarter to reduce the Hawks lead to just nine at 30-21, but the Hawks held on to grab the early advantage.

Michael Richardson pitched in with 10 points for the Rams.

As the BVIFA’s BDO Primary School Leagues continued their Easter break, with a resumption scheduled for this week, not one team has been able to claim complete dominance in their respective divisions, with many schools still in with a shout of claiming top spots and in some cases upsetting the traditional ‘apple cart’.

In the most recent games in the U7 Group A, Enid Scatliffe Primary School Maroons went joint top with a 2-1 win over Alexandrina Maduro Primary, who stay third, thanks to Antonio Bramble, who netted twice inside the first 8 minutes to allow his team to weather a late storm from AMPS to secure victory. The Maroons also beat Montessori, 2-0 on a brace by Mario Carter.

Two goals from T’Mari Nanton gave Begrado Flax Educational Centre a comfortable 2-0 win over Enid Scatliffe Primary Teal and T’Khoy Morton’s double also handed BFEC all 3 points against Montessori, with the final score being 3-0, to leap frog AMPS into second place.

In U7’s group B play, Robinson O’Neal Primary grabbed the top spot with a 4-0 romp against ESPS Red’s with a Jaden Quashie hat trick completing the scoring after Remauri Walters had given them the lead. Claudia Creque Primary stays in touch of the league leaders following a 5-0 victory over First Impressions 2. Henrique Warren’s hat trick sandwiching two goals from Shamaar Tomlinson. Joyce Samuel Primary cemented second place in the standings after Ganton Grant’s hat trick and Michael Findlay’s solo effort proved too much for Cedar Green.

In the Under 9’s Cedar International School are atop both Divisions albeit by slim margins

In Under 13 action, Cedar School White claimed a share of second place in Group A, beating Robinson O’Neal Primary, 8-1. Kirk Scott netted four times, Stephen Weyers twice and Noah Leese and Conor McCullum a goal apiece. At the bottom of the Standings, Willard Wheatley Primary School grabbed their first win of the season, 2-1, over Pelican Gate, with J’Khoi Smith scoring both. The Seven Day Adventists also joined the mix at the top with a 4-0 win over Enis Adams thanks to two goals each from Denvin Jones and Keon Sampson.

Meanwhile in Group B, Cedar Green gave themselves a little breathing space at the top with an 8-0 rout of St Mary’s Primary. Luca Reich scored three, Nathan Haycraft two and a goal each came from RJ Wong, Alelandro Santos and Lawton Green.

The first CONCACAF Girls Football Tournament (7 v 7) takes place at the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG) on Saturday April 11, 2015 and the BVIFA’s new Technical Director, Katie Rowson, will be in attendance.

The tournament is just one aspect of a slew of events taking place over the weekend with an opening ceremony planned for Friday night at the Multipurpose and Exhibition Cultural Center and a female coaches workshop slated for Friday April 10, 2015.

The sessions will be conducted by CONCACAF Instructor Heather Dyche, who outlined the ultimate purpose for the initiative. “Antigua has done a great job of already creating a grassroots programme and a U-13 league so we are down here just to support them and help to run a 7v7 tournament and do everything we can to help grow the league,” she said. “What we want to do is help grow four things. One is their technical ability on how to run sessions, plan sessions and how to team. The second part is the tactical aspect so we will look at formations, understanding the game, in-game coaching and the other two pieces are the psychological and physical part of coaching females that tend to be a little different from coaching males so we just help to identify those and then really hope that we help the candidates to leave better coaches.”

Coordinator of the women’s programme, Gwen Salmon, echoed Dyche’s sentiments that the initiative is one that will serve to improve the FA’s ability to produce quality female players and coaches.

“It’s going to help us to expand our grassroots programme we have on Saturday mornings so this is going to be beneficial to the women’s department of the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association and I am excited and I am just looking forward to the games on the weekend,” she said.

Encouraging females
Meanwhile, President of the ABFA Everton Gonsalves said having the first instalment of the CONCACAF tournament will serve to encourage more females to get involved in football.

“I want to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to CONCACAF for ensuring Antigua is granted this pilot project. As you know, our mandate is all about the development of football in general but female football holds a special place in our hearts and we want to ensure that Antigua is keeping pace with the rest of our colleagues throughout the region and internationally in terms of female football development,” he said.

The tournament will commence on April 10, 2015 with a presentation on “football for girls” for the parents. The matches will be played on April 11 and 12, 2015.

Sixteen teams from schools across Antigua and Barbuda are currently in the programme and 10 clubs from the ABFAmembership will compete in the open age category.

Also attending the tournament will be heads of female programmes from the Leeward Islands member associations which are Montserrat, Anguilla, USVI, BVI, St Kitts and Nevis and St Maarten.

Anchor leg Jonel Lacey capped off her Carifta Games career in fine fashion on Monday night, to end the 44th edition of the regional premier Jr. Championships at the Kim Collins Stadium in Bird Rock, St. Kitts and Nevis, helping the BVI to snatch the U20 Girls 4x400m Relay silver medal from the Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago, ending the competition with two silver and one bronze medal.

With Jamaica winning its seventh straight relay of the games, it came down to see who would grab the remaining medals from among the three teams—and who would go home without. The BVI—with its quarter that won the 2013 IAAF World Youth Championships Medley Relay together for the first time—they trailed the Bahamas as sprinter Taylor Hill ran a strong leg after getting the stick from Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses—who wasn’t at her best—and held off the Trinidad and Tobago runner trying to pass at the exchange.

Lacey immediately put the team in third place behind the Bahamas with Trinidad and Tobago challenging. Lacey—who won individual silver in the 400m Intermediate Hurdles on Sunday night—unleashed a ferocious kick over the last 120m, surging past the Bahamas runner and kept the distance for the silver medal ahead of Trinidad and Tobago, finishing in 3:46.43—the territory’s 40 Carifta Games medal in its history.

It was the first time the BVI had fielded an U20 Girls 4x400m Relay since it began participating in the Carifta Games in 1976.

The final day began with Tynelle Gumbs in the U20 Girls Javelin Throw with a heave of 37.90m—the second best mark of her career—during the morning session, to finish sixth overall. She was seventh in the Discus Throw during the evening session with a best effort of 38.86m. Twin sister Trevia finished fifth with a personal best twirl—while cracking the 40m mark for the first time in her career—with a heave of 40.18m. She beat Tynelle for the second consecutive time, increasing her best from 38.74 in her last meet in Arizona.

The afternoon didn’t start off well for the BVI as U20 Girls 100m Hurdler, Deya Erickson, who was in medal contention and clipped the fifth hurdle, lost her balance, stumbled into the next hurdle and disappointingly, did not finish the race.

Moses, a 2013 U17 Girls 400m silver medalist, ran a strong race her first 800m at a championships level, but finished fourth in 2:14.80 in her outdoor debut in the event, after running 2:12.46 indoors.

Beyonce DeFreitas —the only 14-year old to make the U18 Girls 200m final— ran a personal best of 24.50 seconds to place fifth, with a +1.5 meters per second tailwind, running from Lane 7. She lowered her best from 24.79 in the prelims. Only eight other BVI athletes have run faster.

In the U20 Girls 200m, running from the inside lane, Nelda Huggins had a sixth place finish in a wind aided 23.92 seconds aided by a +4.3 tailwind. U.S. Virgin Islands’ Tashira McIntosh was eighth in 24.17.

Triple Jumper Akeem Bradshaw, competing in the U20 Boys division, finished eight after getting a best measurement of 14.18m.
