Virgin Islands’ volleyball talent, Sharonda Pickering has signed to join Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) and ended her time at Hillsborough Community College with a pick for the All Conference Volleyball 1st team.
Pickering joins a 20-win FGCU team during its most successful season.
“Sharonda has worked so hard and come so far,” said Coach Larkin. “We are so proud of her and know she will continue to grow under Coach Botsford.”
Pickering was also named 1st Team All-Conference, after her final game for the HCC Hawks, a 3-set win over Webber International JV.
The Hawks were led by Abbie O’Ferrell’s 16 kills, Brianna Stowell’s 39 assists, Pickering’s .800 hitting percentage, and Larra Bickelhaupt’s 2.9 serve reception. Madara Bajare chipped in 5 kills and had a highlight crosscourt swing.
HCC finished the season being ranked 12th nationally in the final NJCAA poll and playing their best volleyball.
“It’s a little sad,” reflected Captain Brianna Stowell. “This team is so talented and tough. I love these girls, and I’ll never forget our time together.”
The Lady Hawks conclude the season 21-9, 5-3.
HCC finished #12 in the last NJCAA national poll but concluded the conference season with a heart-breaking loss to Polk State. The loss knocks HCC to 3rd place, missing the FCSAA tournament.
HCC lost two sets 24-26 on way to a 1-3 defeat.
“The volleyball was intense and high level,” explained Larkin. “A break here or there and who knows…”
The Lady Hawks got 14 kills and 3 blocks from Pickering.
