The BVI Softball Association will crown a new men’s Fast Pitch League champion as the Pirates ended the season-long struggle for 2014 champions, Power Outage shortly before 1:30 am at the Softball Field in Road Town this morning, August 15.

Trailing 2-0 in the best of five playoff series and in need of a win to stay alive, Power Outage surged to an early 6-0 lead after two innings. Four runs were scored on 3 hits in the first inning and in the second inning Jeremy ‘Chicken’ Penn struck a two-run home run blast over the center field wall.

Playing without Neville ‘Sheep’ Smith who retired from the sport after last year’s title run, Power Outage relied on Joseph Smith Sr who bothered the Pirates early. On the opposite side of the field, Pirates stuck with starting pitcher Nikos Penn in spite of the early runs scored by Power Outage.

By the bottom of the third inning, the Pirates had seen enough of Smith, scoring their first run and in the fourth inning 3 more runs crossed home plate all before the first out was recorded.

Power Outage held a 6-4 edge and the Pirates were surging when umpire Glenford ‘Chappy’ Maduro halted play due to rain at the end of four innings of play. When play resumed, Nikos Penn held Power Outage to their third consecutive scoreless inning buying enough time for his hitters to take command.

Right on cue after the rain delay in the bottom of the fifth, there was no shelter from the onslaught that saw Pirates pile on 8 runs from 5 hits against Smith to wrestle the lead away, 12-6.

The inning was headlined by a three-run homer from Al Leonard.

Power Outage narrowly escaped the inning as the 9th run in the inning would have invoked the mercy rule and the game would have ended. The defending champs were not going away without a fight and scored 5 runs at the top of the 6th inning to put the score 12-11 and two runs away from taking the lead.

Pirates were held scoreless in the 6th inning to set up an intriguing 7th and final inning.

At the top of the 7th, Pirates went to their ace pitcher, Allen “Woodrow” Smith who delivered the crucial save, stranding the run to tie the game at third base and securing victory 12-11.

Leonard from the Pirates were 3 for 3, scored twice and drove in 4 runs while Rhodni Skelton was 3 for 4, 1 runs scored and 4 runs batted in.

For Power Outage, Jeremy Penn was 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 4 runs batted in while Khoy ‘The Mailman’ Frett was 3 for 3, 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.

Pirates will await the winner of the playoff series between Reds and Republica Dominicana whose game will be played on Wednesday, August 19 at 7:00 pm.

The Pythons became the 2015 Fast Pitch Women’s Softball Champions after defeating the Hawks 11-10 last night, Tuesday August 11, 2015 to complete a three nil clean sweep.

The game was all Pythons until the Hawks, with their backs to the wall at 8-0 down and starting the 5th inning, mounted a stirring comeback to rattle and almost roll the Pythons.

Perline Scatliffe led off the inning and recorded only the Hawks second hit of the night, to centre field. Riiah Durante failed to get on base, Ericka Frederick singled as Deja Adams, running for Scatliffe, was out at third on a lightening throw from Jelissa Potter.

J’heane Niles singled, Diana Hunte doubled on a fielding error, and Frederick came home to open the Hawks account.

Niles also made it home before Javelyn Frett tripled to deep centre field, eventually to bring Karema Brown, Hunte and herself home to make it 8-5. Kia Doward also scored to make it 8-6.

The Pythons failed to score at the bottom of the 5th and then faced a rejuvenated Hawks in the 6th as after two quick outs, Frett singled to allow Hunte to score.

At the bottom of the inning, Darier Malone took a full count before driving in Sheniqua Fahie to make it 9-7. Jelissa Potter hit to deep centre scoring Malone to make it 10-7 and Valissia Brathwaite then singled to score Potter, making it 11-7 and the Pythons were seemingly safe having weathered the comeback.

However, in the 7th inning, Doward came home on some wild Pythons fielding to make it 11-8. Frederick then doubled, allowing Brown home (11-9) and then Niles singled to left field scoring Durante, making it 11-10.

Unfortunately for the Hawks it was as close as it got as Fahie, in relief of Brathwaite, picked up the final two outs in quick succession.

Afterwards, coach Terry Chinnery was shaken if not stirred, but did admit he hadn’t had to say so much to his team in this year’s league. “I had to take a time out and go on the field as I couldn’t believe what I was seeing from them in the 6th and 7th inning. I used some choice words and thankfully, although it was still stressful, they regained their composure and saw out the game for the win.”

The Pythons had 7 hits, made 4 errors, while the Hawks had 10 hits, and made 8 errors.

The winning pitcher was Brathwaite who got some late relief from Fahie and the loser Durante.

Potter went 4 for 4, scored four runs, had 4 RBI and notched two doubles and two triples while Chevaughn Richardson went two for four, with 2 RBI.

“I am used to winning with this team, so losing would be more emotional. I’m comfortable in this winning spot. Richardson really impressed me tonight, when we needed it most she delivered and I’m pleased for her,” commented Potter.

For the Hawks, Niles went two for four with one run and one RBI.

Frett went two for four, with one run and 3 RBI.

Action resumes on Friday August 14, 2015 in the Men’s Play Off’s when at 7:00pm, the Republica Dominicana take on the Reds, followed by Power Outage against the Pirates.

Last night, Sunday July 5, 2015, the Pythons beat the Hawks, 13–9, in a close game that was finally settled on a Darier Malone drive and a fielder’s error in the 5th inning that gave the pythons some breathing space.

With all their big guns, seemingly controlling the game from the plate, the Pythons found the Hawks tough to put away, something which should trouble them as without a few silly errors, the Hawks could easily have claimed a famous victory.

However, with Valissia Brathwaite on hand to wrap up the innings, despite giving away a couple of late runs, the Pythons hung on to remain unbeaten in three seasons and look odds on favourite to add the 2015 Championship to their collection.

The Pythons had 9 hits for the runs and the winning pitcher was Thea Cooke.

In other games, the Pythons also recorded a 20–5 victory over the West End Warriors, with Tammy Phillips going 3 for 3, scoring 3 runs with a homer and 4 RBI. Sheniqua Fahie, the winning pitcher, with a no hitter performance, went 4 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.
