A wave of hundreds of young footballers rolled down Waterfront Drive, Road Town, Tortola, on Wednesday 30th September, 2015, adorned with brightly coloured football shirts designating their BDO Primary School League and BVIFA High School League team colours.

The now traditional march through the capital of the British Virgin Islands brought traffic and bystanders alike to a halt as they waived and cheered on the boys and girls. Families and friends lined the procession, a police escort steered the way, the Althea Scatliffe Primary School Drum Corps played their hearts out and DJ “Dre” kept the feet tapping with cool sounds on a blistering hot afternoon.

Once safely arrived at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School auditorium, the youths were greeted by the Honourable Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith, BVI Football Association President, Mr. Andy Bickerton,  the Minister for Education, Culture and Sports, Hon. Myron Walwyn, Mr. Ryan Gelug from Sponsors, BDO, and Mr. Paul Hewlett, Acting Director at the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports.

“You have a bonus this year,” stated Mr. Bickerton. “This is the second league of the year as we are now changing to a September start to avoid clashes with other events. Football is spreading from Primary School to High School and will hopefully stay in your blood. Our coaches are improving through attending licensed courses and hopefully that will make you all better players as we look to continually improve the standard of football throughout the territory.”

“It’s good to see that the numbers have gone up from a couple of years ago,” commented the Premier. “Seeing so many of you who have now gone onto High School and remain keen on playing is also encouraging for the continual growth of football.”

The Minister for Education, Culture and Sports noted that he was very pleased with the work done by the Football Association: “If you want to keep anything alive, it’s important that you always ensure the younger persons are involved and this School League is one of the success stories. If this continues Football will become one of the leading sports in the territory.”

Hon. Walwyn also acknowledged the importance of sponsors and that businesses have a responsibility to the community to support and build programmes such as these and noted that “coming together we can get a lot more done for the Country.”

Speaking on behalf of sponsors, BDO, Ryan Gelug expressed that the company was very proud of its continued support for the Primary School League and reminded the children to make sure they have fun and enjoy their season. “Football is about a lot of fun. Winning is fun, but so is just taking part, so remember to have fun. Make sure you enjoy yourselves and may the best team win.”

After the ceremony several youngsters were invited to represent their school in various skill drills, including shooting, passing and dribbling, organized by the FA Coaches and Technical Director, Katie Rowson.

The Primary and High School Leagues both kick off on Monday 5th October and the schedules will be available to schools from Friday 2nd October, 2015.

Dr. Ian Mc Clements, consultant for STRI, a Turfgrass Research and Consultancy Business from the United Kingdom, completed a successful visit to the BVIFA’s new East End Stadium on Friday 11th September, 2015, giving the all clear for the next stage to begin.

Dr. McClements, who is a FIFA Consultant for the artificial turf pitch installation, which forms the next stage of the FA’s Goal Project, was very impressed with the preparation of the site, including the leveling and compaction “in terms of the development, the filling of the site etc, it has progressed quite well and we can now start the next stage which is putting the pitch installation out to tender. Everything is progressing quite nicely”

BVIFA Executives, President, Mr. Andy Bickerton, First Vice President, Mr. Aubrey Liburd and Avanell Morton also attended the site inspection and as Bickerton explained, there would be some delays to the original date line, but they were to be expected as the project moves forward.

“We are very happy as well,” Bickerton noted. “The earth moving has progressed on time, the leveling and the fill at the site has been of the highest quality and will be completed, once the guts have been covered.”

The pitch installation will take a little longer than originally expected as both the Consultant and the Contractors begin to iron out the specifics of the layout, required drainage, and location of the bases for the flood lights, and irrigation pumps, pipes and sprinkler heads.

One Consultant is usually in charge of each project from start to finish and as McClements said, “I will make a number of visits during the various phases of the project, with the next visit due to take place when the pitch has been constructed to the sub base stage.”

McClements then expected to make a follow up visit in another six months to one year after the final installation to see how it has been contained and if there are any issues with the pitch.

Back n March 2014 during a FIFA development committee meeting, the BVIFA was granted approval for the project as part of the FIFA Goal Program.

The project includes a 2000 seat main stand, 400-meter track and field, a regulation-sized soccer field with associated facilities, a netball court/volleyball court, concession stands and more than 200 parking spaces. There will also be the construction of an access road between the parking lot and stadium by Andy’s Car Wash.

The U17 Girls’ team weathered some storms both on and off the field during the recent Caribbean Football Union World Cup Qualification Tournament in Nevis, but regardless of results not going quite according to plan, overall their performance was encouraging and as a team they showed some bright signs for the future.

The first Game against St Kitts and Nevis, played at the Elquemedo Willett Park on Nevis was a 3-1 defeat to the hosts, but the second half performance was one that pleased Coach Katie Rowson.

“St Kitts and Nevis raced into a 3-0 lead by half time, but the second half belonged to the BVI as the girls out shone their opponents, just lacking the final touch in front of goal,” said Rowson. “The girls kept their shape well throughout, although did not do well at some of the basics.  It was 3-0 at half time.  The girls were brilliant in the second half and closed down, marked up and their movement was fantastic.  It ended 3-1, we scored from a penalty.  I was very happy with the performance in the second half and thought that the result was a fair one and better than expected before the competition.”

The second game was against Caribbean power houses, Trinidad and Tobago and it didn’t take long for the BVI girls to realize that they were up against a whole new level of football.
“A very disappointing game/performance/result for us,” noted Rowson. “T & T were a different level – we ‘parked the bus’ from 20 minutes into the first half, but it was still 3-0 by half time. We changed the line up for the second half and actually played better, but T and T kept pushing scoring 5 more with two scored in the last two minutes – very disappointing.”

In the final group game against  Dominica, the girls were unlucky to not at least claim a point, as after Dominica had grabbed the lead, the BVI bounced back to equalize inside the last 15 minutes. However Dominica stole all three points with a late winner in a 2-1 defeat.

“A very close game with two errors leading to conceding a goal in each half.  We scored from following in a free kick from Katie Lowery, with Emily Lowery heading it in. Our shape was very good and we were more organized. It was extremely disappointing to lose the game but felt that our games against Dominica and St Kitts showed that we are not too far away from other teams,” said Rowson.

BVIFA President, Mr. Andy Bickerton, was pleased with the performances from what was a group of young inexperienced girls. “It is good that we were competitive in all of the games. We fielded a very young team with the majority of the girls aged between 12 and 15 so they will still be eligible for this age group for a number of years,” said Bickerton.  “We are very much in a developmental stage in women’s football so we are encouraged to see the progress our girls continue to make. They represented the BVI well both on and off the field and the BVIFA are very proud of them.”

The BVI U17 Women lost 3-1 to St Kitts and Nevis in their first game of the Caribbean Football Union World Cup qualifying Tournament at the Elquemedo Willett Park in Nevis on Saturday August 22, 2015.

Having fallen into a 3-0 hole after a fast paced first half, the BVI rebuilt, corrected a few errors and put up a tremendous second half performance, to not only keep the hosts goalless, but also created many opportunities to score for themselves.

However, it was not until into the last five minutes that reward for endeavour was gained when Lilly Pierce was brought down in the penalty box and the BVI were awarded a penalty.

Katie Lowery took the responsibility and calmly slotted home to make it 3-1.

There would be no further scoring at either end though and St Kitts took all three points.

After the game, the BVI Coach, Katie Rowson, was very upbeat at the team’s performance.

“I’m so proud of the team, the whole idea of the game was to better our performance from twelve months ago and we did that. I’m very happy, we were organised how we wanted to be, but not happy about conceding the three goals. At half time we spoke about correcting a few individual things and had a much better second half.”

The Girls had Sunday off and will be playing against Trinidad and Tobago at 5.30pm tonight.

In the other game in the Group, Trinidad and Tobago had to put up with a fight from their opponents, Dominica, as both teams were locked 0-0 at half time.

Kaydeen Jack would eventually put T&T ahead in the 66th minute and three more goals would follow in quick succession for a 4-0 victory.

Head coach for T&T Rajesh Latchoo, though pleased with the opening win, said he didn’t feel his team played to its full potential.

Confidence is high among the girls national under-17 team who arrived in Nevis this morning, August 20 for the Caribbean Football Union / FIFA World Cup Qualifiers which take place August 22-26.

“I think if every teammate on my team contributes and puts effort and strength that we will do well in this under-17 tournament,” said team captain Jackisha ‘JJ’ Rigobert at a media conference yesterday, August 19.

The BVI is grouped with strong teams such as St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Dominica. On Friday, the BVI will clash with St. Kitts at 8 p.m. with subsequent matches on Monday and Wednesday against Trinidad and Dominica respectively.

According to the BVI Football Association, the team is largely made up of players who were part of the 20-member squad that represented the BVI in the Cayman Islands last year.

“I believe in my team; I have faith in my team. Since from last year in Cayman Islands I saw the potential and effort from each and everyone of my team mates and I know this year we do good in this tournament no matter how tough the opponents may be. I know for sure we will do well,” said Rigobert.

The team includes Kaylah Skelton, Gabby Dawson, Lilly Pierce, Emily Lowrey, Abbie Heywood, Katie Lowrey, Morgan Creque, Tia Modeste, Olivia Messum, Shevonne Vanterpool, D’Avian Williams, Sheniece St John, Bethany Howarth, Akira Phillips.

BVIFA President Andy Bickerton said that he is pleased with the way the team has progressed and expects continued improvement.

“We are not going into these tournaments thinking that we are going in to walk away and win them because we are obviously playing strong countries. What is important is that we participate well and we are serious about our preparation and our players boys or girls use the opportunity to gain the experience and help us build the future,” said Bickerton.

Coach Kate Rowson said that the there are a few girls from the Cayman squad that can’t travel, but two girls were added, one who was part of the under-20 squad a few years ago.

“It was big learning curve last year. It was the biggest stage the girls have every played on in terms of playing in front a thousand people in the first game at night under floodlights which a lot of them had not done so straight away we are in a better position straight away,” said Coach Rowson.

Noting that preparations were hampered last year due to the lack of facilities, Rowson noted that this year there were faced with similar challenges, but the team has used it as an advantage.

“Not having the 11-a-side field to practice on; we have taken that slight disadvantage and used it to you advantage….we have been practicing on a smaller field which has made it nice and compact which means the girls has had the opportunity to practice with having very little time on the ball which has put them under pressure to make sure they have a good first touch and they play the ball early,” Rowson stated.

Team BVI ran out 2-1 winners over the Creoles to lift the Nations Cup at the football tournament finals at the Greenland Playfield in East End on Sunday June 28, 2015.

The final of the Gillette-sponsored Nations Cup lived up to the pre-match hype of being a tense, competitive affair, but it was the youngsters of the BVI team that drew first blood when Riaul Roberts calmly slotted home in the 12th minute.

However, the Creoles refused to lay down and concede victory, coming back at the BVI team with grim determination and just six minutes later star striker, Denron Daniel, netted the equaliser from the penalty spot.

The score remained deadlocked at 1-1 until early in the second half when Rafael Savoury took advantage of a blunder in the Creole defense to sneak in and scored what turned out to be the winner.

The youngsters defended well as a unit to see out the game, 2-1, and claimed the title of Champions, sparking wild scenes of celebrations from the players and fans alike.

Team BVI Coach, Avondale Williams, was also proud of his team’s performance. “They worked hard and their concentration level was excellent. They deserved this moment and have played well together for the whole tournament.”

St Vincent failed to show up for the third place match and victory was forfeited to Europe.

The British Virgin Islands Football Association’s (BVIFA) ‘Women’s Five-a-side World Cup’ concluded on Sunday June 21, 2015 at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School field with another action packed afternoon of exciting football in a cup final atmosphere.

The girls, split into four teams representing France, Australia, Germany and the USA, played in two groups with France and Australia topping their group to earn the right to clash in the day’s final.

The teams, handpicked by BVIFA Technical Director Katie Rowson based on what she had seen over the previous three weeks of competition, were all evenly matched and the games proved very competitive affairs.

“Out of six matches there were three draws,” commented Rowson. “It was pleasing to see how the selections gelled and the way in which the teams set up. The action was fast and furious with all the teams displaying good control and movement off the ball, but it was also encouraging to see the teams being disciplined in defense.”

Preliminary results
Australia and France tied 1-1, after Lilly Pierce’s early strike was cancelled out by Kaylah Skelton, who was subsequently named the tournament’s Most Improved Player.

Morgan Creque then scored the only goal of the game as Germany beat the USA, 1-0, followed by two draws between USA and Australia and France and Germany. In the last round of group play, Australia used goals by Yasmin Ruffell Smith and Brittany Peters to beat Germany 2-0 and Skelton popped up to net for France in the 1-0 victory over the USA.

Final goes down to the wire
France then met the ‘Aussies’ in the grand finale with the excitement building and culminating in a penalty shoot out, which saw some athletic goal-keeping and some well placed rocket shots by Pierce, Ruffell Smith, Sheniece St John and Peters as Australia came home victorious 4-1.

As in previous weeks, an MVP was awarded from each match with Zahriya Smith, Morgan Creque, Chandni Wattley, Kaylah Skelton and Brittany Peters all getting a CCT voucher for $25, presented in a CCT branded water bottle. Special recognition was also given to Alisha Ayres, Bella O’Reilly and Alice Looney. “These three newcomers really impressed me with their work rate, technical skills and, despite being the youngest, the way they got stuck in every week,” stated Rowson.

The top goal scorer each week received an “Always” basket sponsored by Road Town Wholesale. Skelton picked up the award this week to follow, Marie Lumley, Laresha Martin and St John.

To mark the end of the Tournament, team Australia were celebrated as winners with individual trophies as were France as runners up, sponsored by OBM and all the participants received BVIFA medals.

“ The programme attracted 37 players, 40 games were played, 81 goals were scored, with an MVP from each game celebrated with gifts from the various sponsors, including CCT, Yo Lounge, Hazem’s and Eclipse Hair Salon and Spa. Personally, it was fantastic to see so many girls enjoying the game and showing their competitiveness with such a positive and “fair play” attitude,” noted Rowson.

What’s next?
Next up for the Ladies is the build up for the nine-a-side tournament scheduled for September, which includes practice sessions on Sunday June 28 and July 5, 2015 from 2:00pm until 4:00pm.

“Now that I have seen most of the players performing competitively, I am very excited to work with them over the next two Sundays,” commented Rowson. “As well as training, we will take the opportunity to register players and teams for the upcoming 9 v 9 league, commencing Sunday 20th September. The plan is to work alongside the clubs and mentor the coaches to prepare for the league and further developing the women’s game.

“The league will provide an opportunity for the players show their tactical awareness, fitness and commitment over the 12-week competition and will allow me to select those players ready to represent the territory in the BVIFA’s planned 2016 international competitions.”

Following wins on Sunday June 21, 2015, both the Creoles and the BVI progressed to the Nation’s Cup final scheduled for Sunday June 28 at the Greenland Playfield.

The first semi-final of the Gillette 9-a-side Nation’s Cup Football Tournament saw heavy favorites Europe demolished by the Creoles’ star striker Denron Daniel. The final score was 3–1.

Daniel’s pace and accuracy were too much for the Europeans to contain as he went on to score two goals and could have had a couple more if wasn’t for some fine saves by goal- keeper Andre ‘DJ Dre’ Gaymes.

Thomas Albert netted a third and Jacques Roul netted a consolation goal for Europe.
Denron Daniel was the Digicel Player of the Match.

BVI edge out St Vincent on penalties
In the second semi-final match, St Vincent failed to hold on to a one-nil lead that they held for 75% of the match. Nano Ottley scored the early goal for the Vincy Heat and missed a few other chances.

With coach Avondale Williams directing the attack from the sideline, the spirited BVI team kept working hard and managed to grind out the equaliser five minutes from full time. In the ensuing penalty shootout, the BVI converted their first three penalty shots while St Vincent only managed to score two, giving the BVI a 3–2 win.

Trevor Peters was the Digicel Player of the Match.

The BVI win means they will meet the Creoles in the final this Sunday, June 28, 2015 while St Vincent will meet Europe for the third place spot.

Penalty shoot-outs determine winners of BDO Primary School League

The BVIFA/BDO Primary School League closed out on Wednesday June 17, 2015 with all three age group finals ending in a penalty shoot-out drama.

Staged for the first time on the field shared by both Althea Scatliffe and Enid Scatliffe Primary Schools and in front of a huge crowd of children, family and football fans, this year’s championship games proved the most competitive yet, with crunching tackles, super shots, scintillating saves and nerve wracking conclusions for players and parents alike.

Robinson O’Neal & Bregado Flax battle to penalties
The U7’s of Robinson O’Neal and Bregado Flax were on the field first and both displayed disciplined defense with individual moments of skill, but neither side was able to beat the goal keepers. As the final whistle blew, the game remained deadlocked at nil-nil and the teams then faced penalty shoot outs.

Begrado Flax showed the greater resolve and ran out the winners.
Jaden Quashie won the Golden Boot with 22 goals throughout the season, while Kyle Alexander received the Golden Glove and Drekaily Findlay the MVP.
“Both teams had a game plan and before the penalties, they both did their job,” commented coach of the teams, Thomas Albert. “Once you get to a shoot-out situation, it can go either way on the day and I spoke to them about the possibility yesterday and told them just to try their best and not worry about who would win or lose as they are all worthy champions”

All Cedar clash!
In the U9’s, it was an all Cedar School clash as the “Greens” took on the “whites”.

Alex Fountain opened the scoring in the 9th minute; however, Azarni Callwood equalised just four minutes later and the “Greens” regained the lead in the 23rd minute, with a cool finish by Ryan Lettsome. The lead, however, lasted just six minutes as Gethin Jones struck to send the game into a penalty shoot out.

Cedar Green kept their cool and ran out 4-3 winners. Fountain just pipped Callwood to the Golden Boot while Jaden Abrams grabbed the Golden Gloves award and Ryan Lettsome the MVP.

“Congratulations to both teams, who played wonderfully throughout the season to reach the final,” commented John Riley, Cedar School’s Director of Football Development. “In my eyes it finished 2-2, with penalty kicks not really coming into it. Well done to the winners, it was an exceptional game with both teams trying to play football and listening to their coaches.”

Cedar hold nerves in penalty shoot-out with ‘Mighty Mighty’ Scatliffe
The Under-13 final between Althea Scatliffe and Cedar proved another cut and thrust affair with two evenly matched teams only separated, ultimately, by the penalty shoot out.

Full time ended 1-1, but Cedar survived the tension to lift the Championship with Lawton Green named MVP, Bradford Green the Golden Glove winner and Luca Reich winning the Golden Boot.

Mr Andy Bickerton, representing BDO, made the presentations and not even the rain could dampen the celebrations by all the teams and award winners.
