The British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee (BVIOC), in collaboration with Canada Sport for Life (CS4L), the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) and, with full endorsement from the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare conducted a successful two day workshop on Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) and Physical Literacy at the Fort Burt Hotel conference room on February 29 and March 1, 2016. Mr. Richard Way, CEO of Sport for Life Society, Canada was the facilitator.

At the Opening Ceremony Mr. Ephraim Penn, president, BVIOC, Hon. Myron V. Walwyn, Minister for Education & Culture and Ms. Ivy George, National Coordinator, Health Promotion Services, Ministry of Health and Social Development addressed the gathering.

The 68 participants comprised physical education teachers, doctors from the BVI Health Services Authority, nurses, chairpersons and members of national sporting federations and personnel from the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Physical Literacy which means ‘having the fundamental movement and sport skills and motivation that enable individuals to read their environment and make appropriate decisions, while moving confidently and with control in a wide range of physical activities’, was of major interest to the participants.

The premise of the program is that it will pave the way for residents of the BVI to live a healthier and productive life that will help to manage the cost of health care.

Five sporting federations successfully submitted applications to benefit from the LTAD programme. Athletics, Rugby, Football, Tennis and Sailing will shortly embark on the planning of the multi-stage training, competition and recovery pathway for their sport.

Mr. Andy Bickerton of the BVI Football Association said, “The workshop was educational and very relevant. If we practice what we learnt and employ them in our sport, our athletes should be healthier and the occurrence of non- communicable diseases would lessen. It has pointed us in the right direction and we of the BVI Football Association will ensure that we work with participants instead of concentrating only on the elite players, in an effort to sustain our sport.”

Nurse Cherry-Ann George Smith of the BVI Health Services Authority said, “It is timely and applicable to what is being done with community healthcare. It is a means of primary prevention in non- communicable diseases and chronic ailments. I see where it may be used for all our clients. This has opened an avenue for networking with different sports. It was an eye opener and I am pleased to have been a part of the experience.”

“The workshop was informative and well structured,” said Mr. Elsworth Phillips, president of the BVI Swim Federation. “Mr. Richard Way made the concepts easy to understand. I now see where the BVI Swim Federation can partner with the sailing association with strength and conditioning, their swimming skills and water safety.”

Mrs. Angeleta Bernard, local coordinator of the LTAD, BVI was pleased with the enthusiasm of the participants and will be meeting with the committee, chaired by Mr. Penn to initiate the launch of LTAD, BVI and Physical Literacy in the national federations, schools and communities.

New General Secretary , Paul Hewlett addressed the next cadre of more than 20 hopeful soccer coaches last Friday, February 5th, 2016, as the F.A launched its Raising the Standards Campaign ahead of the second Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) “D” License programme.

“Our World Governing Body, FIFA and CONCACAF” commented Hewlett “are moving towards standardizing minimum levels across all Member Associations and their member clubs. So it is of upmost importance that we all understand our roles within such a framework, including the Coaches pathway”.

Becoming a CONCACAF qualified Coach, according to Hewlett not only opens doors on opportunity and further education , but also, as the FA is moving towards only utilizing qualified Coaches, employment in some of their many Youth development and National Programmes.

BVIFA President, Mr. Andy Bickerton, was also on hand to address the participants, mentioning that as football becomes more and more structured in its approach, investment in young people will begin to reap benefits on the regional and global stage.

“Having more and more qualified coaches will only make players better prepared, play at a higher standard and position them to gain the rewards for hard work” he stated.

The next stage of the CONCACAF “D” License is the First Aid Course, facilitated by the Red Cross which takes place on Saturday 13th February from 9am until 2pm, at the BVIFA Head Office at the Botanic Station.

It is a half day course and is mandatory for those wishing to gain the “D” License.

Practical and Theory Coaching begins on Thursday February 18th and runs through until Sunday 21st when the participants will be tested on what they have learnt over the previous three days, including principles of attack and defense, small sided games, age appropriate training, session planning and technical training and knowledge of the Theory of Coaching.

The F.A. is pleased to announce that Mr. Paul Hewlett commenced his role as General Secretary today, Monday 1st February and will be based at the Head Office at the Botanic Station, Road Town, Tortola.

Mr. Hewlett will bring a wealth of sporting knowledge to the Association, not only with experience at domestic level, but also Regional and International levels.

His organizational skills and track record from Grassroots development to Olympic Committee and Governmental relationships will bring a fresh dynamic to Football and create an environment for the game to progress to new heights.

“It is an exciting challenge and one I’m looking forward to” commented Mr. Hewlett “I was impressed with the President’s vision for the development of the game and although there is a lot of hard work ahead, I’m sure working together with the various committees and clubs we can ensure Football in the Territory has a bright future”

Mr. Hewlett has hit the ground running with planning for the upcoming Caribbean Cup fixture against Dominica, which will be hosted by the F.A. on March 26th at the A.O. Shirley Ground, but has also been immediately involved with the second Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football “D” License Coaching Course.

There is still space on the Course which kicks off on Friday February 5th with a compulsory Introduction Workshop at the F.A. Head Office from 6pm. The participants will be given a wealth of information from Mr. Hewlett on the expectations that the Association has for the Coaches, with the aim of ensuring all those who attend understand their prospective roles and opportunities as licensed Coaches.

On Saturday 13th February the first stage of the Programme begins with a First Aid course, covering such important topics as Safety, Personal Care, Bleeding and Shock, Fractures, Sprains and strains, Prevention of concussion, CPR and understanding medical conditions.

From Thursday 18th to Sunday 21st February, the course moves to Theory and Practical sessions, with CONCACAF Facilitators, including Technical Training, Principles of Attack, Principles of Defense, session planning, small sided games and age appropriate training.

The Course concludes with exams in both Theory and Practical.

It is with regret that the F.A. has with immediate effect accepted the resignation of Technical Director, Katie Rowson, who has been with the Association for the last 12 months.

Rowson tendered her resignation on Friday 22nd January, 2016, to the President Mr. Andy Bickerton.

“Whilst disappointed Coach Katie is leaving the F.A. I would like to thank her for her contribution to the development of Football in the Territory and especially for working towards improvements in our Women’s Programmes.” Commented Bickerton “The F.A wishes her all the best in her future endeavour”.

Rowson has been offered an opportunity to take up the post of Head Coach & Manager of Watford Ladies, who play in the English FA Women’s Super League (WSL) second tier.

“This is a huge step in my career and I have worked to achieve this level over the last 18 years and I am delighted to take this opportunity.” She stated “It will be extremely hard to say goodbye to so many people that I have met, worked with, lent on for support and the amazing people that I can now class as friends and family.”

Whilst the F.A. begins the process of finding a replacement Technical Director there will be no disruption to either the Digicel Centre of Excellence, the After School Programme or plans for participation in Representative Youth Tournaments, with existing full time staff Coaches continuing the advancements made over the last season.

The British Virgin Islands Football Association (BVIFA) will be re launching the Digicel Sponsored Centre of Excellence from the 23rd of this Month, with a series of Age Group Try Outs.

The first of such sessions will be held for pre selected U13 Boys and Girls at The Millicent Mercer Recreation Grounds in Baugher’s Bay on January 23rd, whilst the U9’s and U11’s will be invited to attend on the 30th January at the same venue.

U15 and U17 Boys and Girls will be contacted directly to attend from the 30th at a venue to be confirmed.

The Digicel Centre of Excellence will also have an identical programme on Virgin Gorda at the Recreation Ground.

“The FA is delighted to continue the relationship with Digicel and partner with them to support our youths” commented Technical Director, Katie Rowson. “The Digicel Centre of Excellence will be arranged in two blocks of 5-6 weeks each to allow for Easter and will be a focus point for National Age Group Team selections”.

Whilst not precluding anyone in the process, those National Teams will be picked predominantly from within the Digicel Centre of Excellence as the FA’s Player Pathway.

“The U9’s, 11’s and 13’s will focus largely on Technical Skills with lots of 1 v 1 challenges and small sided games” noted Rowson “The U13’s will also be introduced to principles and philosophies of attacking and defending, whilst at the U15 and U17 levels we will concentrate more on our style of play specific to competing at Regional and International levels. Overall we will be now looking to establish a style of play for all the BVI National teams”.

The Digicel Centre of Excellence will not only establish the Player Pathway, but also serve as an ideal environment for Coaching Development.

Outside the likes of Rowson and Avondale Williams, the F.A. also has seven recently qualified Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) “D” License Coaches and will be holding another course from February 18th to 21st, 2016, to further increase the “workforce”.

Already 12 have signed up for the CONCACAF “D” License which covers a vast array of topics including the role of Coach/Educators, the Principles of Coaching, health and safety, practical sessions, small sided games, technical / tactical training and of course various tests and exams on all that had been covered.

“Having trained Coaches is an integral part of what we are trying to achieve within the Centre of Excellence” stated Rowson “It is very important that the youths get correct training and become technically proficient in the right environment. The better trained our coaches, then the better our players can become”.

Lady Ballstars beat Women Panthers 4-2 and Sugar Boys overcame Islanders F.C. to win their respective BVIFA Nine-A-Side Tournament Championships at the Greenland Recreational Park on Sunday December 13, 2015.

In the Women’s Final, the Ballstars looked to be sitting pretty with a two-goal advantage before Jacintha Weekes struck a quick fire brace to send the game into extra time.

Phillia James had earlier given the Ballstars the lead, when she raced onto a through ball from Lilly Pierce to beat the advancing keeper, Decima Lambert and fired home. The second goal came courtesy of a sliced clearance by the Panthers defense, which lobbed up and over the despairing leap from Lambert and into the net.

However, almost directly from the restart, Weekes wriggled her way through the Ballstars back line and made it 2-1. Within ten minutes it was all square when again the Ballstars defense failed to deal with the ball and Kimone Mills fed Weekes who took a touch and made no mistake, shooting low past the keeper.

Into extra time and  Yasmin Ruffel Smith was first to react to a loose ball in the box after a fine save from Decima Lambert from Sharlene Pond’s rifle shot on the turn, to put the Ballstars back ahead and then victory was secured when Lilly Pierce intercepted a goal kick and smashed a shot into the empty net.

The MVP was Jacintha Weekes (Panthers), Golden Glove Brittney Peters (Avengers) and Golden Boot Phillia James (Ballstars).

Sugar Boys top Islanders

In the Men’s Championship, Sugar Boys beat Islanders 2-0 with second half goals coming from Derol Redhead and McGraw Baptiste.

Redhead flicked home a header, leaving Monty Butler stranded and then Butler failed to deal with a long range free kick and could only watch as the ball rebounded back off the bar and into the path of Baptiste who fired home.

The MVP was Derol Redhead (Sugar Boys), the Golden Gloves Andre Gaymes (Wolues) and Golden Boot, Roger Roberts (Sugar Boys).

The Panthers claimed third place with a 3-2 win against Wolues, who not only had lost key players through suspension, but then having gone into a 2-0 lead, then saw their keeper injured and unable to finish the game.

The Finalists for the BVIFA Men’s Nine A Side have been settled after two high powered action packed semi finals on Sunday 6th December, 2015, at Greenland Field on the East End of Tortola.

The first game saw the previously unbeaten Wolues succumb to the fast flowing Islanders 4-0, with second half goals coming from Avon Williams, Rohan Lennon, Kevin Fisher and an own goal.

The match ended in a bad tempered flair up between Wolues’ Alesandro Palladino, Rory Greenan and the Islanders Fisher, who all got red carded deep into added time.  The two Wolues players will miss the 3rd/4th play off, whilst Fisher will miss out on the final.

The second semi final proved almost as one sided as the Sugar Boys set up a mouthwatering Final against the Islanders with a 5-2 win over the Panthers.

Colin Ollivierre opened the scoring for the Panthers against the run of play late in the first half, but Derol Redhead equalized shortly after the break. McGraw Baptiste then put the Boys from VG ahead in the 54th minute and Roger Roberts finished off any chance of a come back from the Panthers by smashing a 15 minute hat trick. (59th, 69th, 74th minutes), before Stenneth Williams scored a late consolation goal for the Panthers

The Final will be held on Sunday 13th December at Greenland with a kick off scheduled for 6.30pm

The Panthers will play against the Wolues for 3rd / 4th place at 5.00pm

In Women’s action the Avengers rounded out their season with a 2-0 win against VG United, with goals coming from Lavern Fahie and the Ballstars set down a marker ahead of the Women’s final with a 2-0 win over the Panthers Women, courtesy of two goals by Philia James.

After finishing first and second in the Women’s League, the pair will clash again for the Women’s Championship as part of Finals day on the 13th December at 4pm.

The BVIFA High Schools Football League season drew to a close on Thursday 3rd December with an Exhibition Game between the Open Boys Champions, Elmore Stout High School and U15 Champions, Begrado Flax Educational Centre, which was won 3-1 by ESHS thanks to a brace of goals from Phillip Jules and one from Timothy Lewis (Makimbo Demming scored for BFEC).

Following the game the FA President, Mr. Andy Bickerton began the trophy presentation with some words of encouragement.

“It is very obvious that we have problems with facilities and it is very difficult to play a good standard of football on the hard and bumpy fields, but is very pleasing to see in today’s game, so many of you that have progressed through the system from the BDO Primary School football to now High School and have definitely improved. The new Stadium is coming, just down the road from here (Greenland) and by the time we start the new season in September you will be playing on a high quality surface”

Girls Division:

Cedar School were champions with 12 points ahead of BFEC who had nine and ESHS with 6.

The MVP was Tinia Van Zoost of Cedar, the Golden Boot award went to Lilly Pierce and the Golden Glove recipient was Chinara Perry of SDA. Marlina d’Anguiar also of SDA was named as Most Improved Player.

The Seventh Day Adventist Girls had put up some stellar performances and certainly brought with them the most support both on the bench and in the stands despite suffering some heavy defeats, including an 8-0 loss to ESHS for whom both Morgan Creque and Sheniece St Jean scored hat tricks.

What would have turned out to be the most crucial game of the season then turned into a disappointing affair as ESHS lost by forfeit to Cedar after not having enough players to complete the game.

Cedar went on to stamp their authority on the League with a 4-2 win over BFEC, which included goals for Olivia Messum, Alisha Looney and Pierce.

Pierce added a five goal salvo against Claudia Creque and wrapped up the league championship with another hat trick in the 8-1 win over SDA, in a game that also included a hat trick for Ella Brownsdon.

National U17 Player, Kayla Skelton wrote her name into the record books with a hat trick of her own in the 9-0 win over SDA.

Boys U15 Division:

BFEC went unbeaten throughout the season to lift the title.

MVP went to Michael Woodley, the Golden Boot Award to Luka Chalwell and the Golden Glove who else but Daniel Gilford.

Khemron Tillack made it known early that BFEC meant business with a hat trick in the 4-0 victory over St Georges, but Luca Reich of Cedar White went one better and scored four in a 7-1 demolition of ESHS. However even those goal scoring feats were outshone by Devante Samuel who scored five for BFEC in the 9-0 thrashing of Cedar Green.

Cedar White went on to beat SDA 4-1 with Luka Chalwell getting in on the multi goal scoring fun, notching all four and then registering a hat trick in his side’s 7-0 win over their school mates.

Not to be out done, Kyreek Gardiner smashed home four goals as BFEC rattled up a 10-2 victory against SDA and Miquel Marshall grabbed his own moment in the sunshine with a hat trick for ESHS in a 6-1 win over Cedar Green.

Boy’s Open Division:

ESHS recorded a perfect season to claim the Championship Trophy

The MVP went to Jazeel Castello; the Golden Boot recipient was Phillip Jules and Golden Glove Shemarr Morrison.

In winning four out of four, ESHS started with a 3-1 victory against BFEC, which was followed by a 2-1 win over St Georges. They then beat BFEC 2-1 in the return match thanks to two goals from Jules.

Cedar School thrashed SDA 7-0 with Leo Forte notching four, but was then not available to play for the rest of the campaign and ESHS wrapped up the Title with an 8-0 win over SDA with Jules netting a hat trick.

High School League Co-Ordinator, Avondale Williams, was, overall, happy with the way the season had unfolded “ It could have gone better, but it was good to see all the players were very keen to be involved and played their hearts out. The High School standard is definitely improving and some of them will soon be ready to go to a higher level”

President Bickerton concluded the Closing with more words of encouragement and enthusiasm for the way the Schools leagues were developing players.

“The process is working! The Primary School players are coming through the system and beginning to have an impact at High School level. Going forward, although we have faced difficulties, we will continue playing the Leagues in the September, with perhaps a slightly later finish in December’

As the BVIFA BDO Primary School Leagues drew to a close yesterday at Baughers Bay, Robinson O’Neal beat First Impressions 2-0 to be crowned U7 champions after an own goal and a cleanly struck penalty from Kyle Farrington.

“I’m very pleased with them” commented Coach Thomas Albert “we worked hard all week on how we were going to play this game and we were successful”.

In the Under 9’s Joel Mars netted twice to hand Bregado Flax a 2-0 win over St Georges.

“The whole season they had been playing a certain style, but it took them a while to settle down. At half time I reminded them of how they should be playing and in the second half they put it all into practice to win the game” stated Albert, who also coached Bregado Flax.

And in the U12 Final, First Impressions proved too strong for Cedar G Green to run out 2-1 winners with Justin Smith and Nathan Adams on the score sheet. Azarni Callwood pulled one back late on for Cedar, who were indebted to goal keeper Ollie Henderson for keeping them in the game as he pulled off a string of great saves.

“We had a couple of good players who are very technical and made good use of the ball, control, passing and of course scoring goals. Their goal keeper should be praised though, he made some great saves and kept them in the game” noted First Impressions Coach, Michael Fieron.

The Golden Boot awards went to Kyle Farrington in the U7’s, Christian Vanterpool in the U9’s and Azarni Callwood in the U12’s.

The MVPs were Te Mauri Isaac, Joel Mars and Justin Smith respectively.

Golden Gloves went to Caliq Creque, Jaden Abrams and Ollie Henderson.

Andy Bickerton, BVIFA President summed up the tournament: “It has been tough getting the leagues done in the September Term, but in the end today all three finals were good contests. We shouldn’t forget the runners up either; Cedar School had a young team, which gave First Impressions a good run for their money in the U12’s. The overall standard and the quality of play makes the BVIFA very happy and to see the likes of Henderson playing so well in goal, can only bode well for the future of the game”

Heavy rains may have caused the postponement of the last quarter final between St Georges and Althea Scatliffe Primary School in the BDO U12 League, but not before Cedar School were victorious in their match ups.

Cedar White braved the early rain to overcome Bregado Flax 3-2 on Penalties after normal time had ended 3-3.

Ariel Mohammed slotted home the coolest of strikes to secure the win after some great saves by Matthew Harris between the sticks and following T’Khoy Richardson giving BFEC the lead in the first minute of the game.

Remi Clarke and Sebby Santos sent Cedar into the half time break with a slender 2-1 advantage. Sheldon Tony made it 2-2 early in the second half, Nici Haycraft restored the lead and then in the 40th minute, Richardson’s second made it 3-3.

Then came the penalty drama as the sides remained deadlocked, both goalkeepers made saves and scored in the sudden death nerve wracking finale to the game, before Mohammed sealed her team’s place in Monday’s (30th November) semi final.

In that semi final they will be taking on their School Mates as Cedar Green “G” overcame Robinson O’Neal Primary 4-0, with goals coming from Gethin Jones (2), Azarni Callwood and  Darci Reich.

Reich settled the nerves with a sublime curling effort in the 7th minute, Callwood doubled the lead in the 14th and Jones delivered the coup de grace in the second half as torrential rain soaked the Baughers Bay field.

The two Cedar School teams will play the first semi final on Monday, followed by the re-arranged quarter final between St Georges and ASPS and then on Tuesday the winner will take on First Impressions Primary for a place in Wednesday’s Final.
