Another action-packed Sunday on March 18 saw both F.C. Sea Argo and the Islanders garner their first three points of the season and the Sugar Boys cement top spot in the standings in the BVIFA National League.

The Islanders, back from a mid-season trip to St Kitts and back to full strength had a tough test against a confident VG Utd and whilst Rohan Lennon settled any nerves with the opening goal in the 38th minute, it wasn’t until the second half that the Islanders were finally able to dominate proceedings.

Joshua Lynch made it 2-0 in the 51st minute, an unfortunate Joshua Ramprashad own goal put the game to bed in the 60th, and although Clint Thomas pulled one back for VG moments later in the 61st minute, it proved merely a consolation as the Islanders ran out 3-1 victors.

The drama continued to unfold over in Virgin Gorda, football’s second home, as first the Sugar Boys made it three wins from three with a 3-0 win over a tenacious Old Madrid, courtesy of a Derol Redhead brace.

Redhead scored the opener in the 40th minute, fellow front man, Mohammed Kachour made it 2-0 in the 70th minute, and then Redhead netted his second and the Sugar Boys third in the 87th.

The final game of the day saw F.C. Sea Argo shock the Rebels, whose season continues to spiral downhill, with a 3-1 victory.

Trevor Peters opened the scoring for the Rebels in the 20th minute and it wasn’t until deep in the second half that the signs of an “upset” materialized.

Omar Elliston equalized in the 71st to sound the Rebels alarm bells, just two minutes later Gavin Foster put his team ahead, 2-1 and Janel Ferdinand put the game beyond doubt, scoring in the 86th minute from the penalty spot to grab F.C. Sea Argo’s first victory not only in the National League, but in all competition’s since they joined the FA in early 2017.

This weekend’s fixtures have been postponed by the Competition Committee to facilitate the Masters (over 40’s) hosting a team from St Kitts.

Action will resume over the Easter weekend, with two matches scheduled as follows:

Panthers F.C. v  One Love F.C. at the  A.O Shirley Grounds at 3.00pm

After a hectic match day number three of the BVIFA National League, One Love went joint top, the Rebels are still winless and the Wolues got their first points of the season as 17 goals, 11 cautions and 3 penalties were shared amongst 3 games.

The 3pm kick off over in Virgin Gorda saw Old Madrid come up against the Wolues, who, with a new look side, found themselves 3-0 inside the first 40 minutes, first through Phillip Nelson in the 11th minute and then a brace from Mark Gardner in the 33rd and 37th minutes.

Kenmore Peters pulled one back for Old Madrid in the 45th minute before Christopher Farmer and Christopher Smith put the result beyond doubt, scoring in the 60th and 82nd minutes respectively.

Nelson would then add another in the 87th minute to put the icing on the cake and make it 6-1.

Back on the A.O. Shirley Ground, the Panthers took on the Rebels and come out with all 3 points, winning 3-1, in a feisty game that saw no less than eight bookings.

All the goals came in the second half with Shannon Lawrence opening the scoring in the 53rd minute, Prevell Asson doubling the lead in the 72, Michael Baptichon pulling one back for the Rebels from the penalty spot, in the 73rd and Wayne Phillip wrapping it up for the Panthers in the 81st minute.

The final game back on Virgin Gorda saw a Carl Stewart hat trick, and a brace from Richard Morgan condemn F.C. Sea Argo to another heavy defeat, 5-1, despite staying in the game up until almost half time, when Stewart scored the first of his three (38th).
Morgan’s 11th minute penalty had been cancelled out by Janel Ferdinand, also from the spot, in the 21st minute.

Stewart would add further goals in the 49th and 77th minutes, either side of Morgan’s second in the 54th.

BVI to participate in CONCACAF Nations League

By BVI Football Association

The BVI Football Association President, Mr. Andy Bickerton has expressed optimism and confidence following the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League Draw held in Miami, Florida.

The Senior Men’s team will be facing Martinique, Suriname, Bonaire and the Turks and Caicos in the Nations League qualifying rounds, with the first fixture, against Martinique, scheduled for September 18th, 2018.

Further games will follow on October 18th (Suriname) and then an enticing home game against Bonaire on November 18th, before the final game, also at home, features the Turks and Caicos.

“It’s a good draw for us as we are confident we can be competitive in each game, especially the two home games, given we can use the A.O. Shirley Ground,” commented Bickerton.

The CONCACAF Nations League begins in September with a one-off qualifying phase, while the group phase, consisting of three tiered leagues, will kick off in 2019.

The top league will end with a Final to crown the Nations League champion, and the competition will also serve to unify the qualifying path for the region’s national teams to the newly expanded Gold Cup.

League A will contain four groups of three teams. The winners of each League A group will qualify to the CONCACAF Nations League Final Championship, which will determine the champion of the new competition. The teams at the bottom of each League A group will be relegated to League B for the next edition of the tournament.

League B will contain four groups of four teams. The winner of each League B group will be promoted to League A, and the bottom team of each League B group will be relegated to League C for the next edition.

League C will consist of the remaining MAs divided into four groups. The winner of each League C group will be promoted to League B.

The first edition of the CONCACAF Nations League will begin with a one-off CONCACAF Nations League Qualifying phase, which will determine which teams are assigned to each league.

By virtue of having qualified for the Hexagonal Round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Russia 2018, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, the United States and Trinidad & Tobago have earned the right to be seeded directly into League A and therefore will not participate in Nations League qualifyiers.

Sugar Boys, Old Madrid win 2nd week of BVIFA National League matches

By BVI Football Association

Goals galore punctuated week two of the BVIFA National League as the Sugar Boys hit the Wolues for six and Old Madrid went one better with a seven goal performance against F.C. Sea Argo on February 25, 2018.

The weekend’s action kicked off in a much more sedate fashion as VG United squandered all three points by conceding a late equalizer to the Panthers in a 1-1 tie.

Lance Renolds put the home side up in the 49th minute and just when it seemed victory was secured, Kevonne Bibby netted in the 91st minute for a share of the points.

Back at the A.O. Shirley Ground, Old Madrid thumped F.C. Sea Argo on the back of a first half hattrick from Xavier John (1st, 24th and 27th mins) and further goals from Rohan Sweeney (12th), Bernard Grant (82nd), Frederick Salmon (72nd) and an own goal.

Ruben Stoby and Gain Foster at least got on the score sheet for Sea Argo, who kept battling away until the very end.

Back on Virgin Gorda, the Sugar Boys maintained their 100% start to the season with a 6-0 rout of the surprisingly off par Wolues F.C. as Derol Redhead settled matters with a second half hattrick (47th, 69th and 87th mins) after Michael Castello (26th) had opened the scoring in the first half. Mervin Dainty (82nd) also found the net before Romaine Henry (91st) added a late sixth.

Upcoming fixtures:

04 Mar – 16:30, The Panthers F.C. VS One Love F.C.
04 Mar – 17:00, F.C. Sea Argo VS Virgin Gorda United
11 Mar – 15:00, Old Madrid F.C. VS The Wolues F.C.

Harneys BVI Squash Championships 2018 underway

By BVI Squash Racket Association

18-year old Jesus Camacho (Mexico), beat PSA World ranked #82 Adam Murrills, (England), 3-1 to win the 2016 PSA British Virgin Islands Open Championships.

The Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour returns to the BVI as the Harneys BVI Squash Championships 2018 and gets underway at the Tortola Sports Club in Pasea Estate from Tuesday, February 20 to Saturday, February 24, 2018.

Professional Squash players from USA, England, the Cayman Islands, Mexico, Guatemala and Liberia will mix it up on court with home-grown entries.

Local squash players, Neville Sorrentino, Dion Anselm, Jonathan Addo, Joe Chapman and Mike Adamson will be competing against the accomplished international players.

Last year’s runner up Adam Murrills from England, seeded in the #2 slot, will be looking to take this year’s trophy but faces tough competition from the #1 seed, USA’s Christopher Gordon. Matches will be toughly contested with $5,000 in total prize money up for grabs.

Last year’s final was 63 minutes of thrilling squash when 18-year-old, Mexican Jesus Camacho took on seasoned England campaigner, Adam Murrills with both players delighting the crowd with intense squash for over an hour.

Game 1 was neck and neck throughout with Jesus saving match ball at 10-9 then taking the next three points to win game 1. Adam came out aggressively in game 2 and marched out quickly to an 8-0 lead. Jesus conserved his energy, only trying to hit winners, and Adam squared the match easily winning game 2 by 11-1.

Another momentum change at the start of game 3, as Jesus quickened the pace dramatically putting extreme pressure on Adam for the first time in the match. The smoothness from Adam’s game was gone as he had less time on every shot and Jesus had taken game 3 by 11-3 in double quick time. Adam regrouped for game 4 and it was neck and neck throughout. Adam was hitting some grand winners including an overhead backhand crosscourt into the nick but it came at a cost as a few errors were creeping into his game.

With all to play for at 8-9, Jesus sharpened his concentration and quickened the pace once more to take the last two points and the championship by three games to one. The crowd roared its approval at the vintage gladiatorial spectacle as the players were clearly physically and emotionally drained.

Jesus Camacho, current champion said at the time,“My first PSA win. I must tell my family. I am so happy! Thank you!”

Adam Murrills, runner up said, “I gave it my best shot today but Jesus keeps it so fast and tight and doesn’t make many mistakes. A tough loss today but congratulations to the youngster. But what a great tournament and a fabulous country! I’ve lost count of the number of times I have visited the BVI and its always extraordinary.”

Mark Chapman, BVI Squash President said, “Without doubt, whether you know Squash or not, this will truly be amongst the best in the sport ever seen in the BVI. Our thanks to our platinum sponsor, Harneys, who have joined us this year and also to Deloitte and National Bank of the Virgin Islands who have been our sponsors since inception in 2012.”

The Virgin Gorda Recreation Ground, home of both the Sugar Boys and VG Utd, welcomed the Islanders for the first game of the season and a large partisan crowd were not disappointed as the youthful Andres Bailey put the hosts a goal to the good in just the seventh minute.

The lead lasted over an hour before Nano Ottley fired home the leveler in the sixty ninth minute to quell the noise coming from the main stand. However, the Boys would not be denied and soon had their supporters back on their feet when Mohammed Kachour, last season’s second highest goal scorer, smashed home what turned out to be the winner in the seventy ninth minute.

The second game of opening day, over on the A.O. Shirley Ground, was no less of a thriller, with another large crowd witnessing Trevor Ellis give One Love the lead in the seventeenth minute, before Chadwick Evans gave the Rebels a slight half time advantage with strikes in the nineteenth and forty second minute.

An inspired second half performance though from One Love, first saw Carl Stewart level the game at 2-2 in the sixtieth minute, before – with just ten minutes of normal time to go – talisman, Richard Morgan made sure of all three points with a decisive third goal for One Love.
