Following a decision to halt play in the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League to address issues of serious concern, including indiscipline by players, the League will now resume play on Friday October 9, 2015 at the Save the Seed Energy Centre Basketball Court in Duff’s Bottom.

On September 27, 2015, in a statement issued to the media, the League Committee disclosed that all games in the League had been suspended until further notice.

However, the League dispatched an email to the media last evening, October 7, 2015 in which it announced that play would resume this weekend and also provided the fixture for Friday and Saturday’s games.

“We are pleased to announce the resumption of games in the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League, beginning Friday 9th October, 2015. For now we will start with the Senior Division…”

Young Stars play Pure Playaz from 7pm and Warriors take on Starz from 8:30pm in Friday evening’s double header.

Meanwhile, Co-founder of the League Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) confirmed to Virgin Islands News Online that play is resuming this weekend.

“We are confident that by game time Friday evening the Directors and the League’s Committee would have adequate measures in place to ensure the smooth running of the League to its conclusion of the 2015 season.

“It is indeed unfortunate that our fans, the teams, and our sponsors were forced to endure the temporary interruption of the games, however, we the Directors felt the pause was necessary in order for us to convince ourselves that everything was done to avoid any reoccurrence,” stated Hon Fraser.

Further, the email from the League stated that the Directors/Founders of the League Hon Julian Fraser RA and Bishop John I. Cline would like to meet with all team owners, managers, coaches, players, and referees at 5:30 PM on Friday October 9, 2015 at the Save the Seed Energy Centre Basketball Court.

The British Virgin Islands Cycling Federation (BVICF) held its annual Jason Bally Memorial Road Race this past Sunday October 4, 2015 with a route that took riders from West End to Palestina and back.

The race started at the West End Police Station and the weather was bright and sunny with good winds. At the start, Andre Simon took the lead and at the Frenchman’s Cay junction turn he took off like a bullet leaving the remaining riders behind. From that time he increased his lead throughout the race to finish the five-lap course first in Category A in a time of 2.24.21.

Following the leader was a pack of three who rode together for about 3 laps until one rider fell off from the pack leaving the other two riders to battle it out. With one lap remaining the battle was over when another rider fell off, leaving a lone rider to continue and finish the race by himself.

In the Mountain Bike Category, the riders rode together for a little bit but soon Rusty Burns decided to make an early break from his opponents and held the lead for the full course of two laps and taking the first place position in his category in a time of 1.28.45.

HLSCC/Highland Spring College Classic Pink Race honours College Alumni

On the morning before the first cancer race of the HLSCC/Highland Spring College Classic race series on Saturday 3rdOctober 2015, a very youthful alumni of the College lost her battle to cancer.  Among the usual participants of the series, various friends and families of the fallen alumni walked and ran in her honor with her name written on their pink eye black stickers. Other supporters of cancer victims and survivors came out in large numbers for the cause, and also wrote the names of fighters on their pink eye black stickers and sported their pink rubber wristbands marked with hope, faith, strength, and survivor.

College President, Dr. Karl Dawson, opened the event with a moment of silence for those who fought hard but lost the fight to cancer before the sea of pink balloons was released in their memory.   Race director, Stephanie Russ-Penn called the runners/walkers to the starting line and they were off setting their own pace.  A cancer supporter to the fallen alumni said “She came out just for her, and at one point I wanted to stop along the way, but I thought on her and on how hard she fought so she didn’t stop until the end.”

Reuben Stoby and Rosmond Johnson were repeat winners of the second race.  Stoby gained his second win as the top male in a time of 11:50.32, and Johnson also with her second win of the series as top female in a time of 14:38.51.  Full race results will soon be available on the College’s website.

A wave of hundreds of young footballers rolled down Waterfront Drive, Road Town, Tortola, on Wednesday 30th September, 2015, adorned with brightly coloured football shirts designating their BDO Primary School League and BVIFA High School League team colours.

The now traditional march through the capital of the British Virgin Islands brought traffic and bystanders alike to a halt as they waived and cheered on the boys and girls. Families and friends lined the procession, a police escort steered the way, the Althea Scatliffe Primary School Drum Corps played their hearts out and DJ “Dre” kept the feet tapping with cool sounds on a blistering hot afternoon.

Once safely arrived at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School auditorium, the youths were greeted by the Honourable Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith, BVI Football Association President, Mr. Andy Bickerton,  the Minister for Education, Culture and Sports, Hon. Myron Walwyn, Mr. Ryan Gelug from Sponsors, BDO, and Mr. Paul Hewlett, Acting Director at the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports.

“You have a bonus this year,” stated Mr. Bickerton. “This is the second league of the year as we are now changing to a September start to avoid clashes with other events. Football is spreading from Primary School to High School and will hopefully stay in your blood. Our coaches are improving through attending licensed courses and hopefully that will make you all better players as we look to continually improve the standard of football throughout the territory.”

“It’s good to see that the numbers have gone up from a couple of years ago,” commented the Premier. “Seeing so many of you who have now gone onto High School and remain keen on playing is also encouraging for the continual growth of football.”

The Minister for Education, Culture and Sports noted that he was very pleased with the work done by the Football Association: “If you want to keep anything alive, it’s important that you always ensure the younger persons are involved and this School League is one of the success stories. If this continues Football will become one of the leading sports in the territory.”

Hon. Walwyn also acknowledged the importance of sponsors and that businesses have a responsibility to the community to support and build programmes such as these and noted that “coming together we can get a lot more done for the Country.”

Speaking on behalf of sponsors, BDO, Ryan Gelug expressed that the company was very proud of its continued support for the Primary School League and reminded the children to make sure they have fun and enjoy their season. “Football is about a lot of fun. Winning is fun, but so is just taking part, so remember to have fun. Make sure you enjoy yourselves and may the best team win.”

After the ceremony several youngsters were invited to represent their school in various skill drills, including shooting, passing and dribbling, organized by the FA Coaches and Technical Director, Katie Rowson.

The Primary and High School Leagues both kick off on Monday 5th October and the schedules will be available to schools from Friday 2nd October, 2015.

Impressive Turn Out for Start of 20th College Classic Series

Just over 200 participants kicked off the 20th season of the Highland Spring College Classic Series Saturday on Tortola.

“It was an excellent beginning,” race director Stephanie Russ Penn said. “There was a wonderful buzz early in the morning, everybody was really excited and it just got off to a great start and I’m just really excited for what else is to come in the season.”

Reuben Stoby and Rosmond Johnson who have been dominating the road racing season so far, were the respective male and female overall winners. Stoby covered the course in 11 minutes and 23 seconds while Johnson was timed in 14:15.

“I came this morning not sure what to expect and noticed some runners went in front early and decided to see what they were pushing,” Stoby said. “It was a little bit out of my comfort pace so I decided to put a little bit more pace and that did it for me. Shortly after, I noticed I was ahead and nobody chased.

Stoby improved his previous best from 11:40 and added he can see why Lindell Roberts’ course record of 10:45.1 has been standing since 1997. “It’s very difficult to chase down that record seeing that there’s almost a mile of steady incline,” he noted. “Maybe if I try a little harder, do a little more speed training, I may be able to give it a go.”

Johnson said she was surprised to be the first woman. “I was expecting the youngsters to beat me,” she said. “Even Tallulah (Kinkead), she was behind me the whole time and at one point I got tired, but said to myself, I’ve been training, I need to do better than that, so I started to run a little bit faster. I put my all in it and I did it. I’m glad.”

Russ Penn said she was excited about the launch of the One Mile U11 Division–which previously catered solely to U9–which gave the youngsters an opportunity to run a distance better suited to them, based on body size and age. “I hope they are just as excited as I am, that they don’t have to jump to the 2 Mile when they hit 10.”

The Rotary Club of Tortola–who have dominated the Service Clubs Cross Country Division for the last 10 years–started off with another victory over their rivals. Russ Penn said what she finds tremendous about the team is that who are the top runners and helping to hold the strain. “The Rotary Club of Road Town was right there, but, it’s going to take a stronger game from everybody else to come and bring down the dominant Rotary Club of Tortola.”

Final Results. One Mile Boys: 1. Sam Potgieter, 7 minutes 36.28 seconds. 2. Latriel Williams, 7: 43.57. 3. Jahnare Farrington, 7:55.31. 4. Charlie Potgieter, 7:56.67. 5. Kael Chalwell, 8:16.21. 6. Six young BVI swimmers are to participate in the 10th Annual EU Swim Series in Orlando, Florida scheduled for 19th and 20th at the YMCA Aquatic Center. Hosted by the YMCA of Central Florida, the championship will see swimmers from nine countries participating in the first EU Swim in the Western Hemisphere. Previous EU Swims have been held in France, Brussels, Finland and other European countries. This will be the first time the BVI is participating.

The BVI team will be composed of Kassia Nichols, 12, (Elmore Stoutt High School), Kurt Salapare, 11, (St Georges Primary), Arianna Angus, 10, (St. Georges Primary), Kayla Roberts , 13, (Elmore Stoutt High School), Khadija Sampson 8, (Althea Scatliffe Primary School), and Tia Roberts, 7, (Althea Scatliffe Primary School).

“This championship is open to swimmers of all ages and levels so it will give our kids the opportunity to be exposed to world class age group competition while serving as an excellent prep meet for the OECS Swimming Championship in November,” said Coach and President of the BVI Swimming Federation, Elsworth Phillip, who is accompanying the team. “The slogan of this meet is Swimmers Without Borders which exemplifies the spirit of our swimmers who have been engaging in competitions around the region and the world.”

The EU Swim competition has been held in a different European city and country each year since its start in 2006 and, annually, has attracted between 200-600 swimmers from up to 12 countries. Though begun in Europe, the EU Swim is truly international and inclusive.

The YMCA Aquatic Center where the meet will be held boasts a long history of excellence with a record board that includes swimming greats Matt Biondi, Janet Evans, Missy Franklin and Michael Phelps. The competition itself will be held in the 8-lane, 25 meter by 25 yard pool.

Dr. Ian Mc Clements, consultant for STRI, a Turfgrass Research and Consultancy Business from the United Kingdom, completed a successful visit to the BVIFA’s new East End Stadium on Friday 11th September, 2015, giving the all clear for the next stage to begin.

Dr. McClements, who is a FIFA Consultant for the artificial turf pitch installation, which forms the next stage of the FA’s Goal Project, was very impressed with the preparation of the site, including the leveling and compaction “in terms of the development, the filling of the site etc, it has progressed quite well and we can now start the next stage which is putting the pitch installation out to tender. Everything is progressing quite nicely”

BVIFA Executives, President, Mr. Andy Bickerton, First Vice President, Mr. Aubrey Liburd and Avanell Morton also attended the site inspection and as Bickerton explained, there would be some delays to the original date line, but they were to be expected as the project moves forward.

“We are very happy as well,” Bickerton noted. “The earth moving has progressed on time, the leveling and the fill at the site has been of the highest quality and will be completed, once the guts have been covered.”

The pitch installation will take a little longer than originally expected as both the Consultant and the Contractors begin to iron out the specifics of the layout, required drainage, and location of the bases for the flood lights, and irrigation pumps, pipes and sprinkler heads.

One Consultant is usually in charge of each project from start to finish and as McClements said, “I will make a number of visits during the various phases of the project, with the next visit due to take place when the pitch has been constructed to the sub base stage.”

McClements then expected to make a follow up visit in another six months to one year after the final installation to see how it has been contained and if there are any issues with the pitch.

Back n March 2014 during a FIFA development committee meeting, the BVIFA was granted approval for the project as part of the FIFA Goal Program.

The project includes a 2000 seat main stand, 400-meter track and field, a regulation-sized soccer field with associated facilities, a netball court/volleyball court, concession stands and more than 200 parking spaces. There will also be the construction of an access road between the parking lot and stadium by Andy’s Car Wash.
