Take steps towards a healthier life

10000 stepsThe recently launched BVI Health and Wellness Council Walk/Run for Health campaign includes the 10,000 Steps a Day initiative. The programme is a simple and practical way in which residents of the Virgin Islands can increase their physical activity for the benefit of their overall health and fitness.

“Failing to move regularly throughout your day can be a contributor to a range of diseases affecting your heart, circulation and respiratory systems, some of which could lead to an early death. Moreover, a general lack of fitness caused by a sedentary lifestyle can hamper your daily life by causing low energy levels, reducing your strength and causing you to become overweight or obese. Clearly, it’s important to include regular exercise into your life but excuses abound––a lack of time, money or motivation are often used as reasons for remaining sedentary.

“The ‘10,000 steps’ initiative has been developed to provide an achievable goal that will ensure you move and walk enough each day to stay fit. With the simple addition of a pedometer and some walking shoes, following the 10,000 steps method will increase your fitness and improve your health.” – Wiki How to Walk 10,000 Steps a Day

The BVI Fooball Association’s 40th Anniversary International Friendly against St Vincent and the Grenadines might not have produced the right result, a 6-0 defeat, but it was certainly the right choice of opponent as hundreds of Fans descended on the A.O. Shirley Ground on Sunday.

The Vincy Heat commanded the early exchanges and threatened the BVI goal on many occasions before finally getting on the score sheet inside the first ten minutes when Myron Samuel spun onto a loose ball in the penalty box and fired home.

Azinho Johnson then doubled the advantage 15 minutes later, appearing unmarked at the far post to head home a pin point cross from Samuel.

Spurred into some attacking life having been camped in their own half, the BVI finally got a shot on target, but Andy Crossley’s effort was straight at the Vincy keeper and Andy Davis just failed to get his boot around a loose ball on the edge of the Vincy box.

The tone of the game was then restored as the Vincy Heat laid siege to the host’s goal, with Jevonne Demming clearing a Samuel free kick and then Daniel Barker alert to another stinging effort from Samuel. Kyle Edwards brought a flying save from Barker and the same player rose unmarked from the resulting corner to narrowly steer his header over the bar.

Another indecisive piece of BVI defending saw Johnson score his second and the Vincy third when Samuel latched onto a scuffed clearance from Jamal Sergeant and with quick feet fed his team mate who made no mistake from close range.

Edwards had a chance to make it four moments later following more panic and a goal mouth scramble, but then Samuel raced onto a through ball, beating the offside trap and slipped a pass into the path of Emerald George who was left with a simple tap in.

Regrouped at half time, the BVI put in a much better second half performance and put some pressure on the visitors. Crossley almost brought the home crowd to its feet dribbling his way goal ward only to be denied at the last second before getting a shot off and Eddie Cupid forced Kenyan Lynch into a flying save to be denied a goal on his Senior team home debut.

The Vincy were also dangerous on the break and were denied time and time again by Barker including one athletic single handed leaping tip over before Edwards scored his second to make it five and Shandel Samuel rounded out the scoring at six after another unselfish pass from skipper Samuel.

“I’m very proud of the team, we have some players out, but the new players came in and we still got the result we wanted. The BVI team played better than the last time I saw them (a 23-0 U20 drubbing), they are improving a lot” commented Samuel.

BVI vice Captain, Jevonne Demming, was philosophical in defeat and quick to thank the huge crowd “it was a good game, but you practice what you preach and we need to work harder. The fans came out to support us as we hoped, but we need to support each other. The Vincy played better ball and held the ball more than we did, but we tried our best”

The BVI Olympic Committee has pledged a $30,000 donation over a three year period for the Walk/Run for Health campaign. The funds, sourced through the Olympic Solidarity programme, will support the three-year campaign launched by the BVI Health and Wellness Council on September 8 as an urgent call for residents of the Virgin Islands to increase their physical activity.

The campaign which also introduces the 10,000 steps programme, aims to reduce vulnerability of individuals to non-communicable diseases like heart diseases, diabetes and some cancers through increased physical activity.

The implementation of the programme is a collaborative effort between the Ministry for Health and Social Development, the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, and the BVI Olympic Committee.

BVIOC Secretary General, Mr. Lloyd Black said he hopes to see an increase in the physical activity of the people of the Virgin Islands.

Mr. Black pointed out that the Olympic Solidarity Commission has been funding programmes for many years educating people about the Olympic movement, assisting athletes and providing support to healthy activities.

”When we learned about this programme and the challenges we were having in the BVI community, we made an assessment and determined that physical activity and living a healthy lifestyle fits within the Sports for All programme within the Olympic solidarity and hence our donation. Hopefully through this Walk/Run for Life programme, individuals can lose weight and live healthier, longer lives.”

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Inter-Departmental Technical Working Group, Honourable Archibald Christian, gave an overview of the 2009 STEP survey data on physical inactivity and spoke of the economic repercussion of the lack of exercise.

“As we continue to grapple with high healthcare costs we ask persons to be more conscious about what they eat and the physical activities they are involved in,” Honourable Christian stated. He cautioned persons that if they ignore the plea, one day their health will become an expensive part of living.

“If you can reduce your vulnerability of developing diseases by eating healthier and being involved in more physical activities then the cost of staying alive will be reduced and the overall cost of health care will decreased,” he explained.

Chairman of the Physical Activity Subcommittee, Mr. Paul Hewlett spoke about the innovative and exciting use of social media to inspire the masses.

“We want to ensure that the persons involved in social media live for a long time and follow us for a long time,” he said, adding, “We also want individuals to understand it is about the people. We want them to live healthier lives so they can see their grandchildren get married and live a more independent life as they age.”

Mr. Hewlett further added that these are all issues which are at hand and which will affect us all on a daily basis if we do not start placing emphasis on being healthy.

The Ministry of Health encourages everyone to become a part of the community and workplace walking clubs, or 10,000 steps club of the walk/run programme in striving toward a healthier Virgin Islands.

The Ministry has also implemented a 10-year strategy to improve the health and well being of the population and reduce the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases.

Road Town came alive Friday, September 12 as hundreds of people took a stance for health and wellness by participating in the third annual Caribbean Wellness Day Workforce Fun Run/Walk.

Individuals from the private and public sector walked approximately 2.5 miles dressed in unity representing their respective agencies.

Some walked for health, fitness, fun and camaraderie, while others used the opportunity as a catapult into a more regular exercise regimen.

“It’s all about you getting into shape, being healthy and living a long life.” Chairman, Physical Activity Subcommittee, BVI Health and Wellness Council, Mr. Paul Hewlett advocated.

Mr. Hewlett said that he was very pleased with the turnout, as it is a tribute to the individuals who have a desire to get fit. “We were happy to see a wide range of public and private sector participation and we hope that even more agencies will participate next year,” he noted.

The Chairman also encouraged persons to take part in the VI Run/walk programme through its 10,000 step per day initiative or workplace/community walking clubs. The recently launched programme by the Ministry of Health and Social Development and the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, encourages persons to become more physically active by walking 10,000 steps a day using a pedometer or doing 30 minute walks for five days.

The Caribbean Wellness Day Workplace fun run walk is another initiate carried out by the Health and Wellness Council as Government strives towards a healthier Virgin Islands.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development has implemented a 10-year strategy to improve the health and well being of the population and reduce the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases. The strategy prioritises prevention by integrating policies and action across multiple settings where people live, learn, play and work to improve health and save lives

Representing the Virgin Islands, Ephraim Penn, RADO board member and President of the BVI Olympic Committee, attended a Results Management Workshop for the Caribbean Regional Anti-Doping Organization (RADO) in Georgetown, Guyana on September 7.

The workshop, which was conducted by Mr. Onye Ikwuakor, Director of Legal Affairs at the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), was undertaken to solidify the results management process across the 15 Caribbean RADO member territories. The process will ensure that the provisions of the revised World Anti-Doping Code are enforced as of January 1st, 2015 and applied fairly to all athletes and their entourage.

The Caribbean RADO also held its annual board meeting on September 6 highlighting its anti-doping education and testing programme and received reports on compliance from member countries.

Mr Penn was hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport of Guyana with support from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Addressing the opening ceremony was the Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Culture, Youth & Sport who thanked the organizers for showcasing Guyana’s commitment to anti-doping. Chaired by Dr. Adrian Lorde of Barbados, 14 member countries were represented at the board meeting.

The Caribbean RADO continues to ensure that all athletes who compete nationally, regionally and internationally are clean and free of prohibited substances and methods. A significant boost has been provided through a WADA Testing Grant for out-of-competition purposes which is available to all member countries. To date for 2014, nearly 100 urine tests have been collected from athletes from a range of sport disciplines, all with negative results.

BVIFA 40th anniversary awards ceremony resounding success

The BVI Football Association’s 40th anniversary celebration and awards ceremony was a huge success, with a large turnout from players, supporters, parents and especially youngsters.

As the guests arrived at the Multi Purpose Sports Complex on Saturday 13th September, 2014, they were all greeted with a red carpet entrance decorated with CONCACAF and specially decorated BVIFA 40th anniversary footballs, a welcome from the mucko jumbies and an exquisitely decorated auditorium draped in commemorative 40th Anniversary flags, banners and even a mini painted football pitch with small goals.

Many of the people so instrumental in keeping the Football Family healthy and growing in the BVI were celebrated during the evening and all the assembled dignitaries were escorted by the newly created band of young football Ambassadors.

This programme, an initiative of Mrs. Arleta Bickerton, grew out of her involvement with the U15 Girls team that took part in a CONCACAF tournament earlier this year and is away of giving youths an all round perspective of what they can achieve through the sport both on and off the field.

BVIFA President, Mr. Andy Bickerton opened the proceedings, welcoming the Guests including Mr. Ralph T O’Neal, leader of the Opposition Government, Mr. Jeffrey Webb, President of CONCACAF, Mr. Gordon Derrick, President of the Caribbean Football Union, the Honourable Marlon Penn, Mr. Lloyd Black, General Secretary of the BVI Olympic Committee, Mr. Paul Hewlett, on behalf of the Minister Responsible for Sport and Ms. Avelinda Freeman, from the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports.

Marlon Penn, who spoke on behalf of the Premier, noted that FIFA had been around in the Territory longer than he had and also commented on how the sport is developing the youths: “In most recent times Mr. Bickerton and his team have been working diligently to develop a youth programme and it has already borne fruit with over 1000 projected young people to be playing football. Through Football, new avenues can be created for young people, Track and Field used to be the sport of choice for young people and then Basketball, but it seems like Football is now taking the lead and becoming the number one sport.”

Mr. Gordon Derrick then alluded to some of the problems faced by World Football Associations including the BVI and including Social Disorder, inevitable rise in crime and FIFA’s eligibility Rules.

“You will see these are real and credible threats to association’s growth and potential progress,” said Mr. Derrick. “I urge you, I implore you, the assembled government dignitaries, I beg you to put your heads together so that the BVI will have it’s best representatives. I find it very unreal and unthinkable that someone born in the British Virgin Islands, attended Primary School in the British Virgin Islands, went to High School in the British Virgin Islands, they work here, pay taxes, but for some reason are unable to get a BVI Passport and are unable to represent the BVI. That is unheard of! Maybe many years ago, I understand that might have been a fact, but this 2014.”

Mr Derrick concluded with words of caution and encouragement: “Such an achievement as this shows, it is important to celebrate our past it is also important to keep looking and forging ahead. As you begin to look to the next 40 years I want to encourage you to continue to take risks, because in doing so you will learn how to fail. After all it is only in learning how to fail that you learn resilience.”

Mr. Webb got the crowd to its feet in thanking the entire Football family for reaching 40 years stating, “So much struggle, so much commitment, so much sacrifice, so many people who have given their lives for a dream, so many people who have given their lives for opportunity to others.”

Mr Webb began playing Football when he was 9 years old and never dreamed of where the game would take him.

“I never dreamed where the game would take me. I never dreamed that I would travel to 140 something countries around the world. That I would be representing, in my region of 41 countries, over 500 million people. And it all started out because of a love for Football.”

Mr Webb also praised the Goal Project that is intended to highlight the next few years of Football development and provide a home for Football in the territory.

“The BVI, I believe, is the only member of CONCAF not to take advantage of, or benefit from, the Goal Programme which started in 1999 with a vision of building a home for every National Football Association. Let’s build a home for the BVI Football Association!”

Suspended first day of racing at Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing Worlds causes frustration for VI’s 49ers

Virgin Islands’ Sailors and Olympic hopefuls, Alec Andersen and Chris Brockbank, had a frustrating start to the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Championships in Santander, Spain, today, Monday September 15, 2014, as light or no winds caused the opening day to be suspended.

Brockbank and Andersen, sailing the 49er class boat, have been traversing Europe in their bid to not only qualify for the Olympics in Rio, 2016, but also to make sure they are as competitive as possible and as the pair commented on the latest stop off in Spain.

“We will officially begin the quest to earn a berth at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games! It will be a long week, but we are ready for the challenge!” they said.

A large crowd gathered to witness the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing Worlds Championships Opening Ceremony, which took place 48 hours before Brockbank and Andersen take to the water in the 49er class.

“We are very excited to represent the flag! With over 20 thousand people in attendance at the opening ceremony it was hard not to get pumped.”

The World Championship will also be a first chance for the pairs new Coach Robby Bisi from Argentina to see his charges in competitive race conditions, although he has seen them in action during the first week of his new role.

“We got out for a session and are very much looking forward to working with Robby for the Worlds. We did 3 races in a light sea breeze with a fleet of about 20 boats and, with continuous improvement throughout the day, took a 1st (by a solid margin) in the final race!” said the pair.

Brockbank and Andersen face 13 races over the next couple of days, once racing gets underway and the final Medal series is scheduled for Saturday 20th September.

The 49er is one of the newer one-design small sailing dinghies based on the Aussie 18s. The 49er was designed by Julian Bethwaite (son of Frank Bethwaite) who made several changes to add to the evolution of high performance sailing.

This is a double-handed twin trapeze boat sailed by a helm and a crew. The 49er is slightly unusual as crew does most of the sail control.

In September 1996, a group of top sailors traveled from around the world to Lake Garda, Italy for a trial of many different classes to see which would go forward as the new twin-trapeze skiff for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. After an intensive week of trialing various designs, the 49er proved to be the clear favourite with the sailors and by November 1996 it had been ratified as the new Olympic skiff.

The 49er made its debut at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and since its inclusion in the Olympic Games sailing programme, is experiencing ever increasing popularity worldwide.

Team BVI hails Nanjing 2014 as an experience of a lifetime

IMG-20140829-WA0002On August 28th, 2014, the 2nd Youth Olympic Games concluded with a spectacular closing ceremony in Nanjing, China. With the games now finished, teams of the World have returned home including team BVI. For all participants, it was clearly not just another Games but a truly cultural, educational and competitive event, carefully designed to enrich the experiences of the athletes beyond the playing field.

Team BVI collectively summed up Nanjing 2014 as “definitely an experience of a lifetime.” Chef de Mission, Stephanie Russ Penn also noted that Nanjing, China did a tremendous job at creating and hosting these Games.

Highlights

BVI Wins Gold as part of the inaugural mixed team relay
Competing in three sports swimming, sailing and athletics one of the most significant highlights for the BVI was the Olympic gold medal attained by Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner in the inaugural 8 x 100m Mixed Team Relay.

10614106_699614146786190_4970112474612636410_n(1)Warner, a member of Team #34, joined with nine other athletes from Romania, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Australia, Comoros, Germany and Thailand (2 being reserves) and contested the 4 male, 4 female relay winning in a time of 1 minute 40.20 seconds. The team comprised of a mixture of sprinters, throwers, jumpers and distance athletes.

Triple Jumper Akeem Bradshaw, hurdlers Deya Erickson and Kyron McMaster, long Jumper, Kala Penn, and sprinter, Nelda Huggins were also each a member of one of the 66 total relay teams that participated in the event.

Athletics
In a format unique to the Youth Olympic Game, each track and field athlete had the opportunity to compete in a final regardless of placement in the preliminary round of competition. Initial performances determined each athlete’s designated final with the A final comprising of the top preliminary finishers and the medal contenders.

Huggins, 17, the only A finalist, lacked her usual race drive and had a sixth place finish overall running 11.87 seconds. She ran 11.81 to win her prior heat. While she had hoped to medal, her performance nonetheless is a tremendous accomplishment.

Warner, 16, won the C 800m final in 2 minutes 16.71 seconds. She was sixth in her 800m heat finishing in 2:18.67 seconds.

Penn, 16, had a best leap of 5.22 metres in the Long Jump to advance to the B final finishing 6th and ranked 14th overall.

Erickson, 17, ran the 100m Hurdles in 14.76 seconds but was withdrawn from the C final as an injury prevention measure.

Bradshaw, 17, placed fifth in the B Triple Jump final with a leap of 13.90m and ranked 13th overall. His opening jump of 14.33m in the preliminary round was his best jump of the Games.

McMaster, 17, in just the sixth 400m Intermediate Hurdles race of his career after running a tremendous 250m unfortunately push down the seventh hurdle, subsequently being disqualified. To add to the disappointment in his second chance of a mark in the B final, he was charged with a false start.

Team Official and Athletics Coach Ralston Henry congratulated his athletes for their collective efforts and encourages them to be confident and work harder to reach their true potentials in the sport.

Sailing
There were numerous days of cancellations due to insufficient wind and an extra competition day at the latter point of the sailing competition. BVI sailor and opening ceremony flag bearer, Sam Morrell, 15, competing in the Byte CII Dinghy regatta however, managed to place 13th in the final race and climb 3 spots to rank 22nd overall in the fleet. He scored a total of 125 points and was able to finish in the top 15 three times (12th, 13th and 14th) during his eight total races. Both Sam and his coach, Chris Watters were pleased at the strong ending to his competition.

Swimming
Swimmer, Amarah Phillip, 16, had the opportunity to compete in two events unlike her teammates. She placed sixth in her 50m Butterfly heat in 31.05 seconds and seventh in the 50m Free Style in 29.28, but did not advance to the semis in either event. She was privileged to be the closing ceremony flag bear of the BVI delegation.

Proud mother and coach while at the Games, Tracy Bradshaw was satisfied with the performances and elated to share in the Games with both daughters Amarah and Elinah, the BVI’s top swimmers.

10624778_700421073372164_1325521819460656315_nCultural and Educational Programme (CEP) Activities
In addition to competing, Team BVI took full advantage of the numerous cultural and educational activities provided throughout and outside of the Youth Olympic Village (YOV).

Activities ranged from daily interaction and Yogging amongst the numerous country booths in the World Culture Village set within the YOV; the learn and share booths that focused on WADA outreach, career programmes, fair play, injury prevention; the “Pump it Up” performances highlighting various types of Chinese performing arts, and in particular the BVI booth created by the Xiongzhou Junior High School.

Team BVI had the opportunity to exchange gifts with members of the junior high who presented unique rain flower stones to the BVI delegation.

Additionally, on Wednesday, August 27, Deya Erickson, and official, Ralston Henry interacted with Thomas Bach, International Olympic President as participants of the IOC Youth Session, while the previous day team BVI bonded with each other as well as athletes from other countries on the Nanjing Adventure and Treasure Activity.

Even though the Games have ended, the experience will live on in Team BVI who are appreciative to have “Shared the Games and Shared the Dreams” of the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games.

Following the conclusion of Youth Week the BVI Football Association (BVIFA) is moving its 40th Anniversary Celebrations into high gear with a series of Events starting this Friday, September 12th, with an Open House at the Associations Office across from the Botanic Gardens.

Bingo Night is also scheduled for Friday Night at the Rock Café over on Virgin Gorda.

On Saturday 13th the Annual Awards Presentation and Anniversary Celebration takes place in the Multi Purpose Sports Complex from 5pm with Guest Speaker Jeffrey Webb, the President of CONCACAF. Also speaking will be Gordon Derrick, Caribbean Football Union President, the Governor, his Excellency John Duncan and members of the Government.

“Celebrating this milestone is indeed a special moment for the British Virgin Islands; the Association has built an excellent reputation with stakeholders over the past 40 years. The Club teams continue to play with passion and determination and the next 40 years is well set!”

Everyone, Players, Family, Friends, and Fans are invited to the Ceremony, which is a formal attire function, but free of charge, to support their favourite players and witness a little bit of history as the Association celebrates its past and embraces its future.

Focus turns to Women’s Football on Sunday September 14th, when the BVI Women’s team takes on their USVI counterparts in a re run of a game back in 2012 when the BVI took care of their guests, 2-1 over two legs.

Many of the Girls playing this time were involved back then, but also some new faces have turned up to regular training as well as some of the more experienced players.

Sharlene Pond, who is on the Women’s Committee, has been instrumental in rejuvenating the women’s football programme and has also been practicing hard with her team mates “The turnout has been steadily increasing since we began training three weeks ago and all the girls are showing progress as well as being excited about the chance to play as part of such a huge celebration”

The game, scheduled for 5pm on the A.O. Shirley Ground, will also be the spark that unites a new Women’s League for 2014/15.

It is also just over a week until the BVI Men’s team faces their biggest challenge since the Caribbean Cup, when they face St Vincent and the Grenadines in an International Friendly on the A.O. Shirley Ground, September 21st, 2014.

The Vincy team, ranked 16th in the recent CONCACAF standings and 134th in FIFA’s World Rankings, are a formidable foe for the BVI and of course will have tremendous support from the vast contingent of Vincentians living in the Territory.

For the record the teams drew 1-1 back in 2005 when a Michael Haynes goal gave the BVI a share of the points in a Caribbean Cup Group match.

The Captain that day, Avondale Williams, is now the National Team Coach and a Vincentian commented that the match will represent one of his toughest challenges, but is quietly confidant.

“Training has intensified as we approach the last few days and we are now concentrating on finalizing tactics. We hope to play our normal game, but have been working on variations to suit any situations that may arise.”

Two or three players are recovering from slight knocks, but Williams hopes to be able to choose from his full squad and are looking forward to welcoming some old friends from St Vincent.

“There are a lot of connections with Vincy in the Football Family and we are expecting a large crowd on Sunday and will be hoping to mark the 40th Anniversary with a win!”

The BVIFA’s 40th Anniversary Celebrations kicked off in true style on Sunday 31st August with two Church Services, one at the New Testament Church of God in Baughers Bay, Tortola and the other at the Sanctuary of Hope, the Valley, Virgin Gorda.

As Chairman of the 40th Anniversary Committee and BVIFA.1st Vice President, Mr. Aubrey Liburd explained,
“The 40th Anniversary is finally here and after a lot of planning, the events, beginning with the Tortola Church service at 9am and then moving onto the Sanctuary of Hope in Virgin Gorda at 10.30am, will provide excitement and entertainment for the entire Football Family as well as attract some new Fans to the game.”

The BVIFA will be hosting various events throughout the Month of September to mark the milestone and each week has been given a focus, with the first week from September 1st to 7th earmarked to showcase and promote the Youths.

Whilst the highlight of the Youth week will undoubtedly be the Boys U14 and the Girls U15 Girls games against Laraza F.C. from St Thomas, USVI, on Saturday 6th September, there will also be trips to Schools and a Night at UP’s to savour.

“The Youth week will give another tremendous opportunity for the Boys and Girls to showcase their skills and comes on the back of the Girls putting up some fantastic performances in the recent CONCACAF Tournament hosted by the Cayman Islands,”
noted Alfred Reid, the BVIFA Ag. General Secretary.

Both squads are earmarked as the way forward for National Team development in terms of a long term plan with short term goals and apart from already showing great improvement in skill and tactical awareness are also proving that they are dedicated, willing to work hard to improve and put the BVI on the Football map.

As Liburd concluded, “We, the Committee, have put together a schedule of events to accommodate all who love Football; our players, our supporters, our fans, both young and old, as well as our sponsors. We hope everyone will enjoy the activities as we look forward to be able to live in safer, healthier and better communities in the Territory of the British Virgin Islands.”

The matches start on the A.O.Shirley Ground at 10.00am with the Girls and then the Boys take center stage at 11.30am.
