The U17 Girls’ team weathered some storms both on and off the field during the recent Caribbean Football Union World Cup Qualification Tournament in Nevis, but regardless of results not going quite according to plan, overall their performance was encouraging and as a team they showed some bright signs for the future.

The first Game against St Kitts and Nevis, played at the Elquemedo Willett Park on Nevis was a 3-1 defeat to the hosts, but the second half performance was one that pleased Coach Katie Rowson.

“St Kitts and Nevis raced into a 3-0 lead by half time, but the second half belonged to the BVI as the girls out shone their opponents, just lacking the final touch in front of goal,” said Rowson. “The girls kept their shape well throughout, although did not do well at some of the basics.  It was 3-0 at half time.  The girls were brilliant in the second half and closed down, marked up and their movement was fantastic.  It ended 3-1, we scored from a penalty.  I was very happy with the performance in the second half and thought that the result was a fair one and better than expected before the competition.”

The second game was against Caribbean power houses, Trinidad and Tobago and it didn’t take long for the BVI girls to realize that they were up against a whole new level of football.
“A very disappointing game/performance/result for us,” noted Rowson. “T & T were a different level – we ‘parked the bus’ from 20 minutes into the first half, but it was still 3-0 by half time. We changed the line up for the second half and actually played better, but T and T kept pushing scoring 5 more with two scored in the last two minutes – very disappointing.”

In the final group game against  Dominica, the girls were unlucky to not at least claim a point, as after Dominica had grabbed the lead, the BVI bounced back to equalize inside the last 15 minutes. However Dominica stole all three points with a late winner in a 2-1 defeat.

“A very close game with two errors leading to conceding a goal in each half.  We scored from following in a free kick from Katie Lowery, with Emily Lowery heading it in. Our shape was very good and we were more organized. It was extremely disappointing to lose the game but felt that our games against Dominica and St Kitts showed that we are not too far away from other teams,” said Rowson.

BVIFA President, Mr. Andy Bickerton, was pleased with the performances from what was a group of young inexperienced girls. “It is good that we were competitive in all of the games. We fielded a very young team with the majority of the girls aged between 12 and 15 so they will still be eligible for this age group for a number of years,” said Bickerton.  “We are very much in a developmental stage in women’s football so we are encouraged to see the progress our girls continue to make. They represented the BVI well both on and off the field and the BVIFA are very proud of them.”

The BVI U17 Women lost 3-1 to St Kitts and Nevis in their first game of the Caribbean Football Union World Cup qualifying Tournament at the Elquemedo Willett Park in Nevis on Saturday August 22, 2015.

Having fallen into a 3-0 hole after a fast paced first half, the BVI rebuilt, corrected a few errors and put up a tremendous second half performance, to not only keep the hosts goalless, but also created many opportunities to score for themselves.

However, it was not until into the last five minutes that reward for endeavour was gained when Lilly Pierce was brought down in the penalty box and the BVI were awarded a penalty.

Katie Lowery took the responsibility and calmly slotted home to make it 3-1.

There would be no further scoring at either end though and St Kitts took all three points.

After the game, the BVI Coach, Katie Rowson, was very upbeat at the team’s performance.

“I’m so proud of the team, the whole idea of the game was to better our performance from twelve months ago and we did that. I’m very happy, we were organised how we wanted to be, but not happy about conceding the three goals. At half time we spoke about correcting a few individual things and had a much better second half.”

The Girls had Sunday off and will be playing against Trinidad and Tobago at 5.30pm tonight.

In the other game in the Group, Trinidad and Tobago had to put up with a fight from their opponents, Dominica, as both teams were locked 0-0 at half time.

Kaydeen Jack would eventually put T&T ahead in the 66th minute and three more goals would follow in quick succession for a 4-0 victory.

Head coach for T&T Rajesh Latchoo, though pleased with the opening win, said he didn’t feel his team played to its full potential.

Confidence is high among the girls national under-17 team who arrived in Nevis this morning, August 20 for the Caribbean Football Union / FIFA World Cup Qualifiers which take place August 22-26.

“I think if every teammate on my team contributes and puts effort and strength that we will do well in this under-17 tournament,” said team captain Jackisha ‘JJ’ Rigobert at a media conference yesterday, August 19.

The BVI is grouped with strong teams such as St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Dominica. On Friday, the BVI will clash with St. Kitts at 8 p.m. with subsequent matches on Monday and Wednesday against Trinidad and Dominica respectively.

According to the BVI Football Association, the team is largely made up of players who were part of the 20-member squad that represented the BVI in the Cayman Islands last year.

“I believe in my team; I have faith in my team. Since from last year in Cayman Islands I saw the potential and effort from each and everyone of my team mates and I know this year we do good in this tournament no matter how tough the opponents may be. I know for sure we will do well,” said Rigobert.

The team includes Kaylah Skelton, Gabby Dawson, Lilly Pierce, Emily Lowrey, Abbie Heywood, Katie Lowrey, Morgan Creque, Tia Modeste, Olivia Messum, Shevonne Vanterpool, D’Avian Williams, Sheniece St John, Bethany Howarth, Akira Phillips.

BVIFA President Andy Bickerton said that he is pleased with the way the team has progressed and expects continued improvement.

“We are not going into these tournaments thinking that we are going in to walk away and win them because we are obviously playing strong countries. What is important is that we participate well and we are serious about our preparation and our players boys or girls use the opportunity to gain the experience and help us build the future,” said Bickerton.

Coach Kate Rowson said that the there are a few girls from the Cayman squad that can’t travel, but two girls were added, one who was part of the under-20 squad a few years ago.

“It was big learning curve last year. It was the biggest stage the girls have every played on in terms of playing in front a thousand people in the first game at night under floodlights which a lot of them had not done so straight away we are in a better position straight away,” said Coach Rowson.

Noting that preparations were hampered last year due to the lack of facilities, Rowson noted that this year there were faced with similar challenges, but the team has used it as an advantage.

“Not having the 11-a-side field to practice on; we have taken that slight disadvantage and used it to you advantage….we have been practicing on a smaller field which has made it nice and compact which means the girls has had the opportunity to practice with having very little time on the ball which has put them under pressure to make sure they have a good first touch and they play the ball early,” Rowson stated.

Team BVI ran out 2-1 winners over the Creoles to lift the Nations Cup at the football tournament finals at the Greenland Playfield in East End on Sunday June 28, 2015.

The final of the Gillette-sponsored Nations Cup lived up to the pre-match hype of being a tense, competitive affair, but it was the youngsters of the BVI team that drew first blood when Riaul Roberts calmly slotted home in the 12th minute.

However, the Creoles refused to lay down and concede victory, coming back at the BVI team with grim determination and just six minutes later star striker, Denron Daniel, netted the equaliser from the penalty spot.

The score remained deadlocked at 1-1 until early in the second half when Rafael Savoury took advantage of a blunder in the Creole defense to sneak in and scored what turned out to be the winner.

The youngsters defended well as a unit to see out the game, 2-1, and claimed the title of Champions, sparking wild scenes of celebrations from the players and fans alike.

Team BVI Coach, Avondale Williams, was also proud of his team’s performance. “They worked hard and their concentration level was excellent. They deserved this moment and have played well together for the whole tournament.”

St Vincent failed to show up for the third place match and victory was forfeited to Europe.

Twenty five females turned up to participate in what is the first Sunday of a planned four-week tournament designed to increase participation in football, create awareness of the real Women’s World Cup that kicks off this weekend in Canada, and working on fitness levels ahead of more upcoming football activity.

BVIFA Technical Director, Katie Rowson welcomed and addressed the players, with the emphasis on having fun, fair play and enjoying the game. She also encouraged all to watch the Women’s World Cup that gets underway with hosts Canada facing China on Saturday June 6, 2015. Captain Mulligan’s in Nanny Cay will be showing the game.

The BVI finished with 10 points, double that of second placed Germany with Canada third on four points. England totaled 3 and the USA came home last with just 2 points.

The final proved a tense affair with neither team able to gain the advantage until the penalty shoot out which saw the BVI victorious against Germany to lift the trophy.

An MVP was named for each match and therefore each nominated player received either a $25 gift voucher from Hazem’s or a Wash and Style courtesy of Eclipse Hair Salon & Spa.

The following players were awarded: Lily Pierce, Sapphire Flax, Kezia Gumbs, Akira Phillip, Laresha Martin, Maria Lumley, and Laura Pompey.

Marie Lumley received the ‘Golden Boot’ with four goals and received an ‘Always Basket’ sponsored by Road Town Wholesale.

Week 2 action kicks off at 3:30pm on Sunday June 7 and Rowson also encourages everyone “to come and join in and enjoy watching and playing the world cup with the BVIFA and Captain Mulligan’s.”

Nearly fifty young ladies and women gathered on Greenlands Playing Field on Saturday 23rd May, 2015, to participate in the inaugural CONCACAF Women’s Football Day, hosted by the BVI Football Association.

This initiative, which was presented at the CONCACAF “Let’s Develop Women’s Football” seminar held in October 2014 in Philadelphia, aimed to unite all 41 Member Associations to simultaneously celebrate women’s football throughout the region.

“I’m happy to see so many young girls and Ladies here today,” commented BVIFA Executive, Shereen Flax Charles, who is responsible for women’s football. “The event is geared to promote and develop women’s football and looking at today’s turn out, we have much to look forward to.”

The Girls, after completing registration forms, were then split into Age Groups to experience different aspects of the game, from playing games to competing in various skill challenges, including dribbling, shooting, juggling and passing.

In the 6-8 Group, Kirsha Nisbett won the Passing Challenge and the Juggling Contest, whilst Tezaria and Mykah shared Shooting Honours.

In the 9- 12 Category, J’Nya Demming was Passing Champion, Javiola Hodge Best Juggler and Fastest Ball Controller, whilst Demming also won the Shooting Contest.

Laresha Martin won the 13-15 bracket for Juggling, Kayla Bolus won the Speed Challenge and Martin also shared the Shooting Challenge with Lilly Pierce.

In the Open Age Group, Christine Jackson was top Juggler, Shooter and Passer while Yasmin Ruffell-Smith was Speed Queen.

“This event also marks the beginning of the BVIFA’s Summer of Soccer,” concluded Flax Charles. “Next week we have the Women’s World Cup League for 13 years upwards. It will be held every Sunday for the next four weeks and even if you have never played the game before, it will be a great way to get involved.”

There are also a Grassroots Festival and summer camps to be held on Tortola and the sister islands and National Squad Training for all age groups, both on Virgin Gorda and Tortola.

“Football is a great way to keep fit and also provides many opportunities for scholarships,” said Flax Charles. “We have already sent many kids away and the FA will continue to do so as well as send people to summer camps. We will also provide information to all who may not want to play or have finished playing but want to be a coach, a referee, or just volunteer to help on the various sub committees.”

Next up is that Women’s World Cup League, which sees teams representing those who are taking part in the Women’s World Cup, being held in Canada in June.

FIFA Vice-President and candidate for the Presidency, Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan, will be arriving in the Territory on Thursday 16th April, 2015, to make a courtesy call on the Premier, visit the site of the new stadium in East End and to meet with members of the BVIFA Executive and Officials.

Prince Ali, who back in January announced intentions to challenge long-tenured President of FIFA, Sepp Blatter at the 65th FIFA Congress in Zurich on May 29, will visit the $3M project site on Friday morning and then, following a meeting with the Premier, Dr. Orlando D Smith, will spend some time at the BVIFA Head Office, talking with Executives, Officials and Coaches.

According to 1st Vice President, Aubrey Liburd, “This is a very important visit for the BVIFA as we are in the process of building the new stadium, and also for him to see what we are doing for football as an association and for the youths in the Territory. Also we are looking forward to hearing his vision for football in general and his plans or initiatives for the smaller FIFA Members such as ourselves.”

The BVIFA was finally given approval for the project, part of the FIFA Goal Programme, by the Development Committee at a meeting chaired by FIFA Vice-President, Issa Hayatou in the presence of the Chairman of the FIFA Audit and Compliance Committee, Domenico Scala, back in March 2014.

The project includes a 400 meter track field, regulation-sized football field with associated facilities, netball court/volleyball court, concession stands and over 200 parking spaces. There will also be the construction of an access road between the parking lot and stadium by Andy’s Car Wash.

In relation to contributions for the project, the BVIOC is expected to contribute $250,000 for the running track and the BVIFA will be funding $1M-$1.5M along with assistance in maintenance and profitability of the facility (football events, sponsorship/commercial activities).

Needing to win by two clear goals after losing the “home” leg to Dominica, 3-2, the BVI were held goalless in the away leg at Windsor Park, Roseau, of the first round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers and bowed out of the competition on Sunday evening.

The BVI started brightly and took full advantage of the space offered by the Dominica side that preferred to sit back and wait out the opening exchanges.

With a revamped line including switching James Shearman to right back and inserting Trevor Peters out wide on the right, the hosts were nearly made to pay for their hesitancy, firstly by Matthew Bell and then Karl Espley, who both saw half chances go begging.

Ever dangerous on the break, Dominica sounded alarm bells, with Julian Wade going close and Daniel Barker producing a finger tip save of the match to keep BVI hopes alive.

Early in the second half, with the game still in the balance, Peters just failed to get a touch ahead of the last defender, with the goal beckoning. Andy Davis also saw a shot scream just wide and Epsley also saw his effort go wide.

However, with the hosts now introducing Randolph Peltier, much to the crowds delight, the BVI were pushed back and thankful for more fine saves from Barker including a couple of one on ones with Peltier, a diving block to deny Wade and also another fine save from Sidney Lockhart.

On the night, a stalemate was a fair result and represented a tremendous performance from the BVI team. Coach Avondale Williams, whilst regretting the defensive errors that cost his team dear in the first leg, noted that he was proud of his team.

“It was very difficult to break down their defense but we battled hard, created a few good chances, but were unable to convert them,” said Williams. “Daniel Barker was very impressive and kept us in the game, especially as we pushed forward in the latter stages of the game. To go out of the competition is a bitter pill to swallow, but with the performance I believe we are on the right track to only get better and better as a team.”

Dominica’s Coach, Shane Marshall commented that his team grew into the game especially in the second half. “We started slowly, but in the second half began to knock the ball around, looked comfortable and had many shots on goal,” said Marshall. “Before we play Canada, we have to go back to the drawing board and work on our first touches, our crosses and our finishing.”

Panthers F.C. grab Marlon Penn Nine-a-Side Women’s League Championship trophy

With an emphatic win, but by the narrowest of margins, the Panthers F.C. leap frogged the U15 Girls team to grab the BVIFA Marlon Penn Nine a Side Women’s league Championship trophy on Sunday 25th January, 2015, at the Greenland’s Playing Field.

Going into the final round of matches any of three teams, the Ballstarz F.C, the U15’s and the Panthers F.C, all had a mathematical chance of being Champion, with the U15’s sitting in prime spot three points up on their nearest rivals.

The first game of the day saw the Ballstarz play the shorthanded Avengers, but after racing into a 3-0 lead just before half time, they saw their chances of recording a big win and boost to their goal difference evaporate as an injury to an Avenger player and her subsequent inability to continue playing, gave the Referees no option but to abandon the game.

The injury took the Avengers down to just six players, with the rules stating at least seven must be on the field for the game to continue.
Murcella Gordon slotted home the opening goal after intercepting a clearance and firing home into the empty net. A neat interchange between Emily Lockhart and Tevern David resulted in a pin point cross to Victoria Medley Parkins, who smashed home the second and then David herself made it three with a well placed shot from outside the penalty area.

The U15’s then played the Panthers, knowing a point or even narrow defeat would guarantee them the Trophy, but the experienced Panthers had a much different idea.

After several near misses at either end, the Panthers opened the scoring half way through the first half when Amanda Creese nodded in from close range. Defensive hesitation then let in Ali Hamilton for the second, seven minutes later. Goal number three came in the 25th minute, with Marie Lumley firing home the rebound after Akira Phillip saved brilliantly from a Hamilton Free Kick.

Hamilton scored her second and the Panthers fourth just before half time, calmly lobbing the ball over Keithreece Smith, deputizing for the injured Phillip.
At the start of the second half Laresha Martin brought out a fine save by Decima Lambert and Gabby Dawson saw her Free Kick blocked by the defense as the Girls took the game to the Panthers. However they would suffer more heartbreak when Hamilton rounded off her hat trick in the 35th minute with a low drive and then Nicky Wheatley hit her lobbed effort with just enough power and bounce to leave Smith unable to stop the ball crossing the line in the 40th.

At 6-0 the goal difference for both teams was identical as were the points total, but Hamilton scored her fourth in the 45th minute to make it 7-0 and despite the U15’s striving for a goal that would have denied the Panthers the Championship, up until the final whistle blew, the strike proved decisive in the destiny of the Trophy.

The British Virgin Islands Football Association / BDO Primary School and LIME High School Leagues will both kick off with the now traditional march from the Ferry Dock to the A.O. Shirley Ground on Wednesday 28th, January, 2015.

The BDO Primary School programme has seen an increase in participation each season and this year is no different, with twenty U7, seventeen U9 and seventeen U13 teams taking part.

As Cassandra Gregg, Primary School League Coordinator for the FA commented “the player registration has gone from around 500 to nearly 600 and we have increased from 15 teams to 20 teams. Everything is geared up for another wonderful year”

BVIFA President, Andy Bickerton, also noted that the Primary School League had now extended to full coverage of the territory: “It is good news that Anegada and, for the first time, Jots Van Dyke will have teams in the Primary School League. Althea Scatliffe Primary School has also held an Inter House Tournament ahead of this year’s BDO Primary School League and is obviously looking to be a serious threat to the likes of First Impressions and Cedar School”

Sponsors, BDO, are now into the fourth season with support that has gone well beyond purely financial and as Ryan Geluk stated at the 2015 launch, “Football teaches exercise and team work, which is important in everyday life and we (BDO) are proud of the programme, which has shown significant growth from the first year. This speaks volumes for the work done by the BVIFA, the Coaches, Cassandra and the schools.”

The U7’s will play their games at ASPS and on Virgin Gorda starting on February 2nd, 2015.

The U9’s/ U13’s will play at Baughers Bay, as well as on Virgin Gorda, with a same start date.

Speedy’s has once again stepped up to the plate to provide a ferry service to the players and parents traveling to and from Virgin Gorda and has also provided funding so that the FA can purchase video cameras.

The Lime High School League kicks off the week after with six teams in the Boys’ Open division, four in the U14’s Mixed division and four in the Girls’ Open division.

FA Executive Member in charge of Youth Development, Avanell Morton said “It is a great pleasure to be a part of this exciting venture and thanks go to the BVIFA, BDO and LIME for making it happen.”

Morton went on to confirm the plans for the 2015 opening ceremony, “School Teams, Parents, Teachers, Marching Bands, Cheerleaders and the Moko Jumbies will all assemble across from Pussers in Road town at 2pm, then at 3pm the procession will march through the centre of town, along Waterfront Drive and head to the A.O. Shirley Ground. At 4pm we will have the official opening ceremony.”

Bickerton also noted that the programme was now beginning to bear more fruit than just an annual league. “The BVIFA is satisfied but not complacent about the progression of the young boys and girls into our National programmes. An U15 Girls team performed very creditably at the CONCACAF Tournament. The same group of girls is on the verge of winning the Women’s Marlon Penn Nine a Side League and the U15 Boys just missed out on a semi final spot in the St Maarten F.A’s Easter Invitational Tournament in 2014 when they faced teams from Guadeloupe, Martinique, the hosts and the USVI.”

Full fixture lists are available at the BVIFA office at the Botanic Garden and will be sent to schools electronically.
