Redhead Stunner gives Sugar Boys victory over Rebels

Half way through the second half, Derol Redhead found himself in some space at the top of the penalty area as a corner swung in from the right. He at first looked set to try an overhead bicycle kick, but instead dragged the ball back over his shoulder with a deft touch, and fired home an unstoppable volley past the Rebels.

Having reached the half time break still locked in stalemate, the Rebels should have put themselves ahead early in the second half when Denzil Joseph was one on one with the keeper, but failed to convert the chance from 10 yards out. Moments later, down at the other end Redhead sliced an attempted volley wide and Lenard Davis also came close, but his first touch let him down allowing the keeper to smother his shot.

Jario Morris also brought a fine save from the keeper, with a header and Gregory Solomon also made a last ditch tackle to thwart another threatening Sugar Boys attack.

Joseph squandered another golden opportunity for Rebels, but the move of the match saw Roger Roberts dribble past 3 Rebels defenders before seeing his close range effort saved, and then came the Redhead stunner to secure all 3 points.

Earlier One Love had been held 2-2 by the Wolues, with missed opportunities and two dropped points meaning they missed out on going joint top of the standings with the Islanders.

Mark Gardner had given the Wolues the lead in the 23rd minute before Eric Campbell equalized 5 minutes later. Alessandro Pallandino then restored the Wolues advantage from the penalty spot just before half time.

One Love missed many good chances and eventually leveled the game through Charles Bonnick in the 55th minute. However they could not find a winner and the Wolues will be the happier of the two teams.

BVI Rockers miss out on semi finals by seconds!

DSC_0781By: Charlie Jackson

As the Saint Martin Football Association U13 Boys Tournament continued on Saturday at the Stade Alberic A. Richards, Saint Martin, the  BVI “Rockers”  went undefeated in their two remaining group matches, suffering the heartbreak of conceding a late, late equalizer against the Risk Takers from St Maarten in the last game to miss out on a semi final berth.

The day’s action in Group B had begun with the Rockers facing St Martin Sud and from the first whistle the Rockers dominated their larger opponents with skill and speed.

Luka Reich went close to opening the scoring following good combinations of passing from Guillaume Parkins and Luka Chalwell. Marcus Butler was proving a handful down the right flank, skipping through challenges and launching a series of dangerous crosses.

Reich saw a shot on the turn from a Liam Blok free kick turned away by the keeper and just out of the path of Chalwell, who also saw a powerful free kick from just outside the box beaten away.

The sides reached the break still deadlocked, but in the 2nd period the Rockers finally got the goal they deserved when Parkins finished off a great flowing, inventive move, involving 3 or 4 BVI players, with an unstoppable shot.

Looking completely in control the Rockers where then stunned when the Referee awarded a penalty late on  for what seemed an innocuous challenge and Daniel Gilford had no chance, beaten by a well taken kick that flew into the net

A 1-1 draw against the more fancied team certainly got the crowd murmuring about the BVI and even better was to follow in the next game against the Risk Takers, although it would eventually end in heartbreak.

With a win the Rockers would have reached the semi finals and for almost the entire match it looked like that would be the case as once again the youngsters, growing in confidence and experience with each match they played took the game to their opponents.

Marcus Butler almost opened the scoring with a long range lobbed shot that was only inches too high and Reich saw his goal bound effort blocked on the line.

The Rockers defense was also playing its part with Blok a tower of strength and Gilford alert to any danger in goal.

The Rockers made the break through when Butler latched onto the loose ball after the Risk Takers keeper had only been able to half save a Chalwell effort and fired home from close range.

The Rockers were dominating play and Butler should have doubled the advantage, firing wide from the BVI left and then, with just a few seconds remaining, the Rockers suffered the cruel nature of the game when a harmless long Risk Takers clearance caught the wind and bounced over the surprised Gilford to nestle into the goal

The points garnered from the two drawn games meant that the Rockers would face Lazara F.C. from St Thomas to decide 5th and 6th place overall and even though many teams would have let their heads drop after going so close to a semi final place the Rockers played the game of their lives to rout their opponents 4-1.

Reich sublime half volley from 20 yards out had given the Rockers a 1-0 half time lead and in the second half they really turned up the heat, scoring their second via the boot of Miquel Marshall, the third direct from a Parkins corner and the fourth, a fantastic solo effort from Hash Banthia.

The Babes also had a good day, but didn’t get the results their play deserved as they bowed out of Group A with a 1-0 defeat by Lazara and a 3-0 defeat to Club Franciscain from Martinique.

Terry Evans Cup Update

Kenmore-SimmondsAfter two fiercely competitive preliminary matches the Terry Evans Cup quarter Finals are scheduled to begin this Wednesday, March 19th, 2014, with the Sugar Boyz facing Virgin Gorda United on the A.O. Shirley Ground at 7.00pm.

The opening match of the competition went the way of Old Madrid, 2-0, against the Haitian Stars, thanks to an own goal in the first half and a Kenmore Simmonds second half strike.

Humphrey Leue’s miss hit cross bobbled in the box in the 17th minute and somehow found its way past defender, Cadeem Thomas and the goalkeeper, Daniel Philippe, to nestle in the back of the net.

For the next 15 minutes or so Old Madrid were thankful for the ‘keeping exploits of Hanif James to keep them ahead as he made crucial saves from Raphael Savory, Gregory Atime and Jared Younis. However with a minute of the restart Old Madrid got the breathing space they needed and as it turned out settle the match when Simmonds burst through a square back line and slotted home low past the despairing Philippe.

The second preliminary game saw a tenacious Ballstarz bow out of the competition to One Love via a late late heart breaking goal from Richard Morgan.

Neither side gave an inch or asked for one during the 70 minutes of frenetic action, yet just when it looked like the tie would go to penalties a moment of lapse in the Ballstarz defense allowed Morgan to latch onto a loose ball and thread his way goal ward before sliding home past Maxwell Dabreo.

The goal which came deep into the 3 minutes of added time at the end of the second half was celebrated like a Cup Final winner, such was the relief of One Love to have progressed.

U13 Boys/Girls start preparation for St Maarten Invitational Tournament

BVIFA-U13Under the watchful eye of BVI Football Association Technical Director, Mr. Keith “Grell” Griffith as well as Coaches, Thomas Albert and Cassandra Gregg, over 30 youngsters attended the first practice session ahead of the Special Invitational Tournament hoping to make the final squad for the U13 Representative team.

The Youngsters who all take part in the BDO Primary School League were put through their paces by the Coaching team on the A.O. Shirley Ground, firstly with some intense ball control and passing drills and then to close the session, a practice match, giving them all a chance to impress.

“I must say that, probably, in the just over five months since I arrived this is the best I have seen from the youths. They look enthusiastic and skillful, so today is a great start. We have to select a final of squad of 12, which is stipulated by the Tournament organisers, but as we have already told the parents even if their child doesn’t make the final squad, they should continue to come out as we have plans to go to Puerto Rico and Miami”

Thomas Albert is the Coach and he was equally impressed with not only the turnout, but also the quality of the players

“What I’ve seen today is a lot of great players and it won’t be easy for us to narrow the squad down. The players have shown that any of them can take a spot, but at the next session they will have to work harder, push themselves more and more and prove they want to represent the BVI”

Albert intends to get the team disciplined and playing an attractive game of passing and movement, taking the game to the next level.

The Tournament is in St Maarten from April 18th to 22nd and also includes other Caribbean Countries and teams from the USA.

John Barnes in the BVI helping raise football’s profile

John BarnesFormer Liverpool, Newcastle and England legend, John Barnes departed the Territory on Sunday evening, having spent an exhilarating week fundraising and organizers believe he helped to raise the profile of football.
The week started with two youth coaching sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. The sessions were very well attended with 110 children being coached during the two days at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground.
Wednesday´s session ended with lead sponsor Maples donating 65 signed John Barnes footballs and T-shirts to the children.During the evening, a 6-a-side tournament took place and saw John lacing up his boots once more to give fans and players alike a taste of what it must have been like to play against him in his younger years.

Despite coming unstuck against a slick Forbes Hare side, John’s side went on to qualify for the finals along with Digicel, Forbes Hare and Harneys. The remaining teams, Maples, Ogier, Nanny Cay and Krys Global, were left to fight it out for the plate. In the Plate, Maples came out on top with narrow victories in both the semi-final and the final. It wasn´t nearly as close in the main event though. John´s team brushed aside Harneys 2-0 in the semi final before facing Digicel, who had earlier knocked out Forbes Hare on penalties.

The final was a one sided affair as John’s team showed their class dispatching Digicel 3-0 to claim the victory in the inaugural 2013 6-a-side tournament.
While here, Barnes was also the guest speaker at the Wolues FC annual dinner on Friday at Long Bay. According to the Wolues, the event was a great success and was capped off with a $500 donation made by Long Bay to the Sea Cows Bay Manatees. The following day saw John participating in coaching sessions sponsored by AMS for the Senior Men’s National Team. John was also on hand at the BVI Football Association Awards presentation to give out the end of season awards.

“It was excellent exposure for the players and coaches alike, and was well timed ahead of the team´s friendlies at the end of the month. The week´s events were a resounding success and have gone a long way to raising the profile of football in the British Virgin Islands,” the Wolues club stated. The club added, “The exposure the children and the coaches have gained from being around John has been irreplaceable and it will go a long way to assisting them in the future.”
Whilst the final figures are yet to be announced it is thought that week raised somewhere in the region of $8,000, half of which will be donated to the Sea Cows Bay Manatees for the future development of the club.
Wolues FC In association with Maples, EMCs, Long Bay, Nagico, BCQS, Harneys, Tricor made John’s visit a success.

BVI loses 2-0 to Anguilla on the A.O. Shirley in their opener to the World Cup Qualifiers

Ladies U20The BVI lost 2-0 to Anguilla last night, Tuesday July 16, 2013 as both teams opened their Caribbean Football Union/FIFA Women’s U20 qualifying Tournament campaigns on the A O Shirley Ground.

Having withstood some early pressure, the BVI’s defense was split open in the 10th minute by a pass from midfield that Roxanna Bradshaw latched onto, controlled and then took a touch before sliding it home past the diving Brittany Peters in goal.

Ebony Fahie, battling away in midfield, launched the first home attack with a ball that was played over the top, a tactic that was used too often during the game and with too little success. On this occasion and with legs still fresh, Kezia Gumbs chased it down, slipped past a couple of defenders and with the small crowd leaping to their feet in expectation was unfortunately only able to hit her cross at the keeper.

Most of the first half action though was in front of the host’s goal and thankfully Peters was in good shot stopping mode and had Tahirah Bascombe with Joi Ann Thomas playing solid in defense to back her up.

The BVI’s most successful passage of play came deep in the first period when a series of corners and throw ins had Anguilla scrambling more than once, but the final ball was lacking and the lines were cleared.

The second half was much the same as the first with Anguilla looking the more likely to score and so it proved when Tamisha Richardson slipped through the defense. Her first shot was well saved by Peters, but the rebound fell kindly for the striker and she made no mistake second time around.

Anguilla could have and probably should have scored a few more goals in truth, but at the final whistle, the BVI Coach Kate Rowson could at least take some positives from the game whilst having much to improve upon.

“The result hasn’t gone our way, but I have to say there were some really disappointing bits, especially with the basics, but also I’m pleased with the effort, the organization and the positions, but don’t get me wrong, we have lots to work on and two tough games coming up,” Rowson said.

Coach Kate wouldn’t be drawn on the “over the top” tactic as opposed to playing on the ground, but did comment that it would be discussed. Additionally she pointed out that “we need to look at the game. We didn’t make enough passes or have enough play making. We were trying to play the ball in the air which was the reason why we didn’t put together the passes and we need to sort that out.”

The day’s first game had seen St Kitts and Nevis beat Antigua 4-0 with the Girls red putting on a classy show especially when the ball was at the feet of Phoenetia Browne down the right hand side or Brittany Lawrence down the left.

It took Browne just 4 minutes to supply the cross that unlocked the Antigua defense. Her ball evading two Antigua defenders and finding its way to Janae Pine, who took a touch and calmly slotted home past Mahiah Benta in the goal.

Several half chances went begging at either end, but then on 36 minutes, a delightful corner from Lawrence was met by Kerisha Powell and the lead was doubled.

In the second half Lawrence and Browne were pulling Antigua all over the field. Powell went narrowly wide with a header, Pine just failed to get a touch on a Lawrence cross and then Powell had the best chance to make it 3 when she followed up on a free kick from Lawrence which bounced over the keepers head and then back of the post, but the striker failed to get a clean strike on the ball and instead found herself in the back of the net.

Pine eventually made it 3 in the 75th minute and then to cap off a great all round performance Lawrence slotted home from the penalty spot to make it 4 -0.
