The BVI Football Association (BVIFA) Women’s Committee kicked off stage two of their “Summer of Soccer” with the opening of the Five-a-Side Women’s World Cup on Sunday May 31, 2015 at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School playfield.

Twenty five females turned up to participate in what is the first Sunday of a planned four-week tournament designed to increase participation in football, create awareness of the real Women’s World Cup that kicks off this weekend in Canada, and working on fitness levels ahead of more upcoming football activity.

BVIFA Technical Director, Katie Rowson welcomed and addressed the players, with the emphasis on having fun, fair play and enjoying the game. She also encouraged all to watch the Women’s World Cup that gets underway with hosts Canada facing China on Saturday June 6, 2015. Captain Mulligan’s in Nanny Cay will be showing the game.

Meanwhile, the games on Sunday say players representing teams named after the various countries taking part in the FIFA World Cup, in addition to a BVI team.

The BVI finished with 10 points, double that of second placed Germany with Canada third on four points. England totaled 3 and the USA came home last with just 2 points.

The final proved a tense affair with neither team able to gain the advantage until the penalty shoot out which saw the BVI victorious against Germany to lift the trophy.

An MVP was named for each match and therefore each nominated player received either a $25 gift voucher from Hazem’s or a Wash and Style courtesy of Eclipse Hair Salon & Spa.

The following players were awarded: Lily Pierce, Sapphire Flax, Kezia Gumbs, Akira Phillip, Laresha Martin, Maria Lumley, and Laura Pompey.

Marie Lumley received the ‘Golden Boot’ with four goals and received an ‘Always Basket’ sponsored by Road Town Wholesale.

Week 2 action kicks off at 3:30pm on Sunday June 7 and Rowson also encourages everyone “to come and join in and enjoy watching and playing the world cup with the BVIFA and Captain Mulligan’s.”

Nearly fifty young ladies and women gathered on Greenlands Playing Field on Saturday 23rd May, 2015, to participate in the inaugural CONCACAF Women’s Football Day, hosted by the BVI Football Association.

This initiative, which was presented at the CONCACAF “Let’s Develop Women’s Football” seminar held in October 2014 in Philadelphia, aimed to unite all 41 Member Associations to simultaneously celebrate women’s football throughout the region.

“I’m happy to see so many young girls and Ladies here today,” commented BVIFA Executive, Shereen Flax Charles, who is responsible for women’s football. “The event is geared to promote and develop women’s football and looking at today’s turn out, we have much to look forward to.”

The Girls, after completing registration forms, were then split into Age Groups to experience different aspects of the game, from playing games to competing in various skill challenges, including dribbling, shooting, juggling and passing.

In the 6-8 Group, Kirsha Nisbett won the Passing Challenge and the Juggling Contest, whilst Tezaria and Mykah shared Shooting Honours.

In the 9- 12 Category, J’Nya Demming was Passing Champion, Javiola Hodge Best Juggler and Fastest Ball Controller, whilst Demming also won the Shooting Contest.

Laresha Martin won the 13-15 bracket for Juggling, Kayla Bolus won the Speed Challenge and Martin also shared the Shooting Challenge with Lilly Pierce.

In the Open Age Group, Christine Jackson was top Juggler, Shooter and Passer while Yasmin Ruffell-Smith was Speed Queen.

“This event also marks the beginning of the BVIFA’s Summer of Soccer,” concluded Flax Charles. “Next week we have the Women’s World Cup League for 13 years upwards. It will be held every Sunday for the next four weeks and even if you have never played the game before, it will be a great way to get involved.”

There are also a Grassroots Festival and summer camps to be held on Tortola and the sister islands and National Squad Training for all age groups, both on Virgin Gorda and Tortola.

“Football is a great way to keep fit and also provides many opportunities for scholarships,” said Flax Charles. “We have already sent many kids away and the FA will continue to do so as well as send people to summer camps. We will also provide information to all who may not want to play or have finished playing but want to be a coach, a referee, or just volunteer to help on the various sub committees.”

Next up is that Women’s World Cup League, which sees teams representing those who are taking part in the Women’s World Cup, being held in Canada in June.

BVIFA Under 13 Boys in St Martin for tournament

The BVI Football Association will be participating in the Coupe de la Com, hosted by French St Martin, from May 22nd until May 24th, 2015.

The team comprised of Under 13 boys from the newly invigorated national training programme includes Harsh Banthia, Marcus Butler Junior, Jesse Cooke, Shamoi Dore, Giovanni Grant, Sheldon Harry Junior, Miquel Marshall, Guillaume Parkins , Jahmal Prentice, Alejandro Santos- Torres, Lucas Gorringe-Santos and Justin Smith.

Katie Rowson will be in charge of the team, the assistant coach is Avondale Williams and the physio is Sheldon Harry.

“The format of the competition is 8v8,” explained Technical Director, Katie Rowson. “There are five other teams in the tournament, which is to be played in a league type format, followed by semi finals and finals on the last day, Sunday. We will be up against the likes of St Martin, The USVI, a team based out of the U.S. and Club Franciscan.”

During Easter last year, the BVIFA sent teams to participate, with the Rockers narrowly failing to reach the semi finals.

Rowson, who has had the squad in training for the last two weeks or so, explained that the first priority is to go one better this time around. “We intend to go one better and claim a top four finish to secure a place on the finals day and once that goal is achieved, we will have the confidence to go all the way!”

Practice sessions have been held four times a week on various fields around the territory and each session has been well attended by the group of boys. “Whether in pouring rain or burning sun, each time more boys have come out and have done all I could have asked of them,” said Rowson. “We have worked on technical and tactical aspects of the game and the boys have shown great enthusiasm to listen and learn. I have no doubt they will enjoy the experience and come home even better players.”

The BVI’S first game is against Club Franciscan, so the team will be looking to avenge a 3-0 defeat in last year’s tournament before having to meet the US Marinoise less than an hour later.

Then on Saturday the BVI takes on the USVI at 9.30am and St Martin A at 11.00am. St Martin B is the scheduled game for Saturday afternoon, which will conclude the group stage.

The tournament is the first step in a busy season for the boys, with the U15 Boy’s team heading off to the Cayman Islands in August to participate in the U15 Boys CONCACAF Championships.

“Everyone in the programme will have a busy year, as even if not selected for the upcoming tournaments they will have the opportunity to play in some friendly games towards the end of the year and therefore I am optimistic of not only keeping the current crop focused but also attracting even more boys to come and join the football family. I will be establishing a full player pathway to include an Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 player squad. The structure will help grow and develop football to a new level within the territory.”

FIFA V.P. tours new stadium site, discusses football development in BVI

“Every Country should have the basics: fields, kit, balls, coaches and FIFA should be able to assist.”

Those were the words of FIFA Vice President and Presidential Candidate, Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein as he addressed the BVIFA Executive and staff during a flying visit last Friday, April 17th, 2015.

On a tour of FIFA Member Countries ahead of the elections scheduled for May 29th, 2015, the Prince, in the company of BVIFA President, Andy Bickerton, BVIFA Vice President, Aubrey Liburd, Head of the Women’s Committee, Shereen Flax Charles, Youth Development Head, Avenell Morton, BVIFA Ag. General Secretary, Alfred Reid, Louie Oumeish and Pablo Mayorga, paid a visit to the site of the new football stadium in East End and also made a courtesy call on the Premier, Dr. Orlando D. Smith, before meeting with the FA Coaches back at the BVIFA Head Office.

In answering the many questions put to him about the way forward for football in the BVI and worldwide, the Prince noted that there were many areas that needed reform and clarification.

“Coaches should be from the country they coach, but it is not always possible to get them the necessary experience,” said the Prince. “So there needs to be a form of scholarship programme where foreign based coaches can be brought in to advise and mentor. Gaining a license is fine, but to learn better skills, a coach needs practical skills, to see how others work and to be more involved in practical development.”

He also commented on the need to look at decentralizing the funding process and creating a means test to ensure countries with greater need get the support when they need it. “We need to change the mentality of facilitating development,” noted the Prince. “Cricket in the Caribbean gets more support than football does and we need to change that. We need to build a regional structure to ensure a more localized focus and decentralization.”

Whilst supporting the notion that FIFA has to ensure support so that everyone has the chance to play football, the Prince cautioned that Associations also need to look at how to become self sustained. “There has to be a balance between the funding provided by FIFA and the levels of support from local governments and businesses,” said the Prince. “FIFA can’t give so much that everyone else feels they don’t have to support your initiatives.”

BVIFA President Andy Bickerton was thankful that the Prince had visited and had been able to see the efforts put into place by the FA to develop football.

The Prince was equally impressed with what he had seen and having heard the challenges and seen the enthusiasm first hand, pledged support to help further develop the game within the territory, to assist with the issue of player eligibility and even set up an interchange of ideas between National Associations, especially since many of the issues the Caribbean faces have been experienced in Asia and solutions may already exist.

The Old Madrid Football Club will be staging a 9-a-side football tournament from May 10 to June 21 at the Greenland playing field, Tortola.

He added that the contest also gives players an opportunity to represent their country. “All participating teams will be provided with a replica playing kit for their respective country. There will be a registration fee for each player up to a maximum of 18 players per team.”

FIFA Vice-President and candidate for the Presidency, Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan, will be arriving in the Territory on Thursday 16th April, 2015, to make a courtesy call on the Premier, visit the site of the new stadium in East End and to meet with members of the BVIFA Executive and Officials.

Prince Ali, who back in January announced intentions to challenge long-tenured President of FIFA, Sepp Blatter at the 65th FIFA Congress in Zurich on May 29, will visit the $3M project site on Friday morning and then, following a meeting with the Premier, Dr. Orlando D Smith, will spend some time at the BVIFA Head Office, talking with Executives, Officials and Coaches.

According to 1st Vice President, Aubrey Liburd, “This is a very important visit for the BVIFA as we are in the process of building the new stadium, and also for him to see what we are doing for football as an association and for the youths in the Territory. Also we are looking forward to hearing his vision for football in general and his plans or initiatives for the smaller FIFA Members such as ourselves.”

The BVIFA was finally given approval for the project, part of the FIFA Goal Programme, by the Development Committee at a meeting chaired by FIFA Vice-President, Issa Hayatou in the presence of the Chairman of the FIFA Audit and Compliance Committee, Domenico Scala, back in March 2014.

The project includes a 400 meter track field, regulation-sized football field with associated facilities, netball court/volleyball court, concession stands and over 200 parking spaces. There will also be the construction of an access road between the parking lot and stadium by Andy’s Car Wash.

In relation to contributions for the project, the BVIOC is expected to contribute $250,000 for the running track and the BVIFA will be funding $1M-$1.5M along with assistance in maintenance and profitability of the facility (football events, sponsorship/commercial activities).

As the BVIFA’s BDO Primary School Leagues continued their Easter break, with a resumption scheduled for this week, not one team has been able to claim complete dominance in their respective divisions, with many schools still in with a shout of claiming top spots and in some cases upsetting the traditional ‘apple cart’.

In the most recent games in the U7 Group A, Enid Scatliffe Primary School Maroons went joint top with a 2-1 win over Alexandrina Maduro Primary, who stay third, thanks to Antonio Bramble, who netted twice inside the first 8 minutes to allow his team to weather a late storm from AMPS to secure victory. The Maroons also beat Montessori, 2-0 on a brace by Mario Carter.

Two goals from T’Mari Nanton gave Begrado Flax Educational Centre a comfortable 2-0 win over Enid Scatliffe Primary Teal and T’Khoy Morton’s double also handed BFEC all 3 points against Montessori, with the final score being 3-0, to leap frog AMPS into second place.

The first CONCACAF Girls Football Tournament (7 v 7) takes place at the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG) on Saturday April 11, 2015 and the BVIFA’s new Technical Director, Katie Rowson, will be in attendance.

The tournament is just one aspect of a slew of events taking place over the weekend with an opening ceremony planned for Friday night at the Multipurpose and Exhibition Cultural Center and a female coaches workshop slated for Friday April 10, 2015.

The sessions will be conducted by CONCACAF Instructor Heather Dyche, who outlined the ultimate purpose for the initiative. “Antigua has done a great job of already creating a grassroots programme and a U-13 league so we are down here just to support them and help to run a 7v7 tournament and do everything we can to help grow the league,” she said. “What we want to do is help grow four things. One is their technical ability on how to run sessions, plan sessions and how to team. The second part is the tactical aspect so we will look at formations, understanding the game, in-game coaching and the other two pieces are the psychological and physical part of coaching females that tend to be a little different from coaching males so we just help to identify those and then really hope that we help the candidates to leave better coaches.”

Coordinator of the women’s programme, Gwen Salmon, echoed Dyche’s sentiments that the initiative is one that will serve to improve the FA’s ability to produce quality female players and coaches.

“It’s going to help us to expand our grassroots programme we have on Saturday mornings so this is going to be beneficial to the women’s department of the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association and I am excited and I am just looking forward to the games on the weekend,” she said.

Encouraging females
Meanwhile, President of the ABFA Everton Gonsalves said having the first instalment of the CONCACAF tournament will serve to encourage more females to get involved in football.

“I want to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to CONCACAF for ensuring Antigua is granted this pilot project. As you know, our mandate is all about the development of football in general but female football holds a special place in our hearts and we want to ensure that Antigua is keeping pace with the rest of our colleagues throughout the region and internationally in terms of female football development,” he said.

The tournament will commence on April 10, 2015 with a presentation on “football for girls” for the parents. The matches will be played on April 11 and 12, 2015.

Sixteen teams from schools across Antigua and Barbuda are currently in the programme and 10 clubs from the ABFAmembership will compete in the open age category.

Also attending the tournament will be heads of female programmes from the Leeward Islands member associations which are Montserrat, Anguilla, USVI, BVI, St Kitts and Nevis and St Maarten.
