The Sugar Boys will play Old Madrid in the semi finals of the Terry Evans Cup, after both secured wins on Sunday in their respective quarter final ties against Haitian Stars and the Panthers F.C.

That game will be the second semi final to be played on Sunday 1st May, 2016, at 6.00pm, on the A.O. Shirley Ground and the winner will know their opponent after the Islanders face VG United in the first game of the day at 4.00pm

Old Madrid and the Panthers slugged it out over 90 minutes of ebbing and flowing football, with both sides creating chances to win the game, but ultimately running out of time and ending up facing a dreaded Penalty Shoot Out.

That Shoot Out went right through 18 spot kicks of various style and skill until the Panthers finally lost their nerve and fired kick number 19 high over the cross bar to concede defeat, 8-7.

The Sugar Boys used a goal from Michael Castillo right after the half time break to overcome the Haitian Stars, 2-1, to complete the semi final line up.

Derol Redhead’s 11th minute opener was cancelled out by Michael Bapticham’s 25th minute equalizer for the Stars who were making a return to competitive football after a two year absence.

In Women’s Football, The Panthers overcame the Avengers, 6-1 to secure a place in the May 8th Final against the Ballstars, with a hatrick from Sapphire Flax, a brace from Jacinta Weekes and a solo effort from Christine Jackson.

Makeda Fahie scored a consolation for the Avengers.

A rain swept Saturday did little to deter hundreds of boys and girls from coming out to the A.O. Shirley Ground on Saturday 23rd April, 2016, as the F.A. launched the Digicel Centre of Excellence.

“This Centre of Excellence is designed to give all the Youths selected a safe and happy environment in which to learn and is designed to provide you with a place to showcase your talents, whilst developing new skills” commented Avanell Morton, F.A. Executive Member responsible for Youth Development.

On behalf of Digicel, Katasha Melville, who was on hand to deliver the branded shirts for the players, stated “Digicel is always behind sports and it’s great to have all the boys and girls here to be given such an excellent opportunity to improve their skills”.

Angelique Kanhai, who was in the Territory visiting the new Stadium site encouraged the Youngsters to carry on working hard “I see you are all very dedicated to come out in this rain and weather, and I’m looking forward to seeing how you all perform if selected for the National Teams”.

F.A. President, Mr. Andy Bickerton concluded the brief ceremony with thanks to Digicel as well as explaining how the Centre of Excellence fits into the development process. “It’s great to have the support of Digicel for this programme, as everyone knows we have over 1000 young people participating in our after schools programme and this is another stage in our player pathway from Grassroots to National Representative teams. The Association is very committed to looking after our youths and create opportunities for you all.”

The Digicel Centre of Excellence will continue every Saturday for Boys and Girls both from Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

Hat-tricks in both Ladies and Men’s games highlighted the opening weekend of the BVI Football Association (BVIFA) League Season, on Sunday, April 17, 2016 with Morgan Creque sending the Lady Ballstars to an emphatic 6-0 win over VG United Ladies, and Thomas Albert banging in four for VG United Men in the 5-1 victory over the Ballstars in the Terry Evans Cup.

Following a presentation of the players to BVIFA President, Mr. Andy Bickerton, a goal fest greeted the large crowd as domestic football made a return to the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds for the first time since 2014 when Sharlene Pond and Amanda Emmanuel opened the scoring against a new look and young VG team.

Creque scored her first before Pond added her second to make it 4-0 at half time. Creque netted twice more to round out her hat-trick and the goal scoring to make it 6-0 at the final whistle.

The men then took centre stage on the luscious grass surface of the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds with Albert notching a first half hat-trick for VG United after Swerine Joseph opened the scoring, to make it 4-0 at the break.

Mo’Blo Casey Ogbonna pulled one back for the Ballstars in the second half but Albert scored his fourth from the penalty spot moments later to make the final score 5-1.

The night’s last game saw the Islanders run out 3-1 winners in a tense game with plenty of incidents and enthusiastic tackling from both teams.

All square at 1-1 going into the second half, the Wolues were undone by an own goal from James Drury and a game clinching strike from Kern Mitchell.

In the first half, Mark Gardiner’s opener for the Wolues was cancelled out by Avondale Williams.

On Sunday, April 24 at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds, the Panthers Women face the Avengers at 3.30pm, whilst in the Terry Evans Cup, Old Madrid take on the Panthers Men at 5.15pm and the Sugar Boys face the Haitain Stars at 7.00pm.

The Terry Evans Cup 2016 will mark the beginning of a new season for the BVI Football Association (BVIFA) domestically when the competition makes a return on Sunday April 17, 2016 at the AO Shirley Ground after a year’s absence from the football calendar.

With the AO Shirley Grounds renovation work now complete and the venue open once again to the Association’s planned competitive, organised fixtures, the Competitions Committee has wasted no time in finalising plans for both the Terry Evans Cup and the the Wendoll Williams Cup, which for the first time will also include 11-aside women’s football.

Fixtures have also been planned for Virgin Gorda Recreation Ground as the BVIFA Executive continues its plans to ensure the game is taken to all parts of the territory and continues to grow not only in participation, but also popularity.

The Islanders are defending Champions from 2014 when they beat One Love 2-1 and they begin the defense of their title on opening day, April 17, 2016 at 7:00pm against Wolues on the A.O. Shirley Ground.

Other matches on the same day include the Ballstars Women against VG United Girls at 3:30pm and then the men’s teams from the same clubs will play at 5:15pm.

The winner team will receive $1,000.00 and a trophy, whilst the Runner Up will receive $500.00 and a Trophy.

The Terry Evans Knockout Cup is named after the former BVIFA President and one of the forefathers of football in the [British] Virgin Islands.

BVIFA U13 Boys bring home trophy

BVIFA Under 13 Boys team took third place trophy in the Easter Tournament hosted in St Maarten, March 25 - 26.

BVIFA Under 13 Boys team took third place trophy in the Easter Tournament hosted in St Maarten, March 25 – 26.

The BVI Football Association’s Under 13 Boys team returned home from an Easter tournament in St Maarten with the 3rd place trophy proudly tucked under their arms.

The tournament, which featured several of the region’s top teams, was hosted by St Maarten and took place over the Easter weekend. The boys arrived in St Maarten on Good Friday morning and then faced their arch rivals from previous visits, Risk Takers, in the afternoon.

The boys settled into the game from the start and ran out comfortable 2-0 winners with goals from Luca Reich and Luka Chalwell.

On Saturday, Luka Chalwell scored twice as the boys beat United Stars 2-0 and Chalwell was on hand again to net the equalizer in a 1-1 draw with St Maarten.

The boys then won the penalty shoot out, 4-2, to decide the final group placings and went on to face Dutch St Maarten in the semi final.

Denvin Jones put the BVI team ahead, but then Dutch St Maarten equalized, forcing the boys to defend as it seemed an age for the referee to decide the game was over. The penalty shoot out was another tense affair with Alejandro Santos particularly aggrieved to have to retake his successful penalty for no apparent reason and to add injury to insult the Dutch Boys scored the decisive spot kick for a 6-5 victory.

Despite the disappointment, the BVI picked themselves up and beat Martinique 1-0 to secure 3rd place, with Chalwell again scoring.

“The happiest I have ever been at a tournament,” commented Coach Cassandra Gregg. “The boys played without fear, full of confidence and deserved a place in the final. We were unbeaten apart from a penalty shoot out and could have easily gone on to win the whole thing. They practiced so hard for this, executed everything that was asked of them tactically and with a little more luck, especially with referee decisions, we would have gone all the way. However I am really proud of all of them.”

The majority of the squad will stick together to prepare for the U15 CONCACAF Tournament in 2017, whilst all of the players will be back at practice at the Digicel Centre of Excellence from the 16th April at Baughers Bay.

BVI Fail To Overcome Dominica In The Caribbean Cup

The Caribbean Cup dream for the BVI is over as they failed to overcome a fast, free flowing Dominica at the A.O. Shirley Grounds on Saturday 26th March, 2016.

A sizeable crowd supporting both teams were treated to 15 minutes of BVI dominance in the first half, but being unable to make a breakthrough, compounded by the loss of influential midfielder Karl Espley to injury, soon turned into a first half nightmare as Dominica grabbed the game by the throat and scored 4 times, to go into the half time break with a comfortable lead.

In the 20th minute an in swinging corner bounced off the knee of Ryan Dicker to leave Ben Chapman helpless and handed the visitors the opening goal, Kelrick Walters was on hand in the 27th minute to no home the second after Chapman’s initial save saw the ball bounce back of the post. Chad Bertrand scored in the 33rd minute and then Julian Wade scored the first of what was to be a hat trick in the 44th minute.

The second half saw Kelrick Walters score the 5th and then Wade rounded out his hat trick with a delightful chip over the advancing Daniel Barker and a well taken penalty.

“The chip gave me the most satisfaction” noted Wade “It was such a good pass and I enjoyed making the lob”.

Wade also commented that his team had settled down nicely into the game and had grown in confidence.

Head Coach, Shane Marshall, was equally as happy with his team’s performance “it took us a little time to get into the game, but once we were able to play our game, we controlled the match and I’m pleased with the way the guys passed the ball around, created chances and also scored goals”.

BVI Captain, Troy Caesar said that the BVI came out with a game plan, but despite a bright start were unable to recover from conceding the early goal and was sorry that they didn’t live up to the crowds expectations of a more competitive game.

Coach Avondale Williams thought his side looked tired after only one days rest, following the Martinique game “I don’t know what went wrong, the guys played their hearts out, but just looked tired. Losing Espley upset the balance of the team and the substitutions didn’t really work out. Overall it was very frustrating, some decisions didn’t go in our favour, but that’s football”.

The BVI went down 3-0 to Martinique in their first Group 7 game of the Scotiabank Caribbean Cup on Wednesday 23rd March, 2016 at the Stade Pierre Aliker in Martinique.

Martinique, playing at home, opened the scoring in the 12th minute of play against the British Virgin Islands, when Kevin Parsemain netted. Yuan Aquino made it 2-0 in the 68th minute, while Steven Lange scored Martinique’s third and final goal in the 84th minute.

“Although we lost, we didn’t allow Martinique to play their usual game or run away with things” commented Troy Caesar, “In fact at times we silenced the crowd and even their players were getting frustrated”.

“They were technically good and very fit” stated Asst. Coach John Riley.

“It was tough conceding two late goals” noted Team Manager, Wendell Nichols. “The game was also tough against a very strong team, full of players from France, but now we have to regroup and get ready for Dominica.

The next game, a must win encounter against well known foe in Dominica, is scheduled for Saturday 26th March, on the A.O. Shirley Grounds at 4pm.

“We are looking good, strong and disciplined” stated Riley.

“We have been coming here for a few years now” commented Dominica’s Coach, Shane Marshall.  “We hope as always to make our fans here happy. The BVI team has changed a lot and these days they send for players from England and elsewhere, but we have a good combination of youth and experience. Our preparation hasn’t been the best, but we are ready to go”.

The last time the teams met was in the World Cup qualifier in 2015, which ended as a 0-0 stalemate and a result that gives the BVI plenty to be positive about in terms of securing all 3 points.

The full squad includes:

Goal Keepers: Daniel Barker, Ben Chapman, Vesquever Frett.

Defenders: Ryan Dicker, Troy Caesar, Karl Espley, Joshua Fines, James Quinn, Gregory James, Vanquever Frett.

Midfielders: Jordon Johnson, Peter Monks, Kristan Javier, Lewis Jones, Gladstone Burke, Christopher Telemaque, Robert Green.

Forwards: Trevor Peters, Allon Williams.

Avondale Williams is the coach, John Riley the Asst. Coach and Sheldon Harry the Physio.

Fans are encouraged to come out early as their will be plenty of excitement pre-match with a “Fan Village”, food, refreshments and of course a chance to grab the best seats in the house.

The game time has been arranged to suit those coming from Virgin Gorda and of course all those who will be heading back to Virgin Gorda to enjoy the Easter Festival Celebrations.

Entrance to the game is just $5 and all Boys and Girls Under 12 get free entry.

The Virgin Islands’ national football team left the Territory on Sunday 20th March, 2016, bound for Martinique for their first match of the 2016 Caribbean Cup.

The Group 7 game is scheduled for 22nd March and then the BVI team will return home to face a second group game against Dominica on Saturday 26th March, on the A.O. Shirley Ground at 4pm.

Fan favourite, Troy Caesar, back in the squad having missed the World Cup qualifiers in 2015 due to College obligations, is looking forward to reuniting with his old team mates and also players new to him. “Well first of all I have to give thanks to God who help give me life to see a next tournament, and after missing the world cup qualifier I realized how much I’m a integral part of the team, I also know being a part of the new look of the team is going to a challenge but as players we have to adjust as fast as we can because this is my second time playing against Martinique and I know they a very good it’s just for the team to work hard and follow our coach tactics and I have confidence we can move on to the next round after how we played Dominica last March,” said Caesar.

Joining Caesar will be a couple of his college team mates, Josh Fines and James Quinn. “Well after meeting them for the first time I could tell that their knowledge of the game and the way they played set them aside from most of my other teammates. Then playing alongside Josh Fines, James Quinn and Lewis Jones we built trust, but being together on and off the field, I know they are going to help the team greatly,” added Caesar.

Caesar is also well aware of what could be a large fan base of people with Dominican ties here in the BVI and that several of the team such as Trevor Peters, Chris Telemaque, and Ceasar himself have family from Dominica. “Well all the names you call are very talented players and playing with them for a number of years, I know their potential.  But again, all the names you call have blood from Dominica but our birthplace is the BVI and I’m very excited to come back home to play even more against a country I always wanted to play. Before I left to come to the US, a lot of local players and spectators know how good I am and how great I can become and encourage me to play so coming back to play at home is an awesome feeling and to see my family and friends. But I just want everyone to come out and give their support because this team is going to change the way people look at BVI football”

The full squad includes:
Goal Keepers: Daniel Barker, Ben Chapman, Vesquever Frett
Defenders:Ryan Dicker, Troy Caesar, Karl Espley, Joshua Fines, James Quinn, Gregory James, Vanquever Frett
Midfielders: Jordon Johnson, Peter Monks, Kristan Javier, Lewis Jones, Gladstone Burke, Christopher Telemaque.)

The British Virgin Islands Football Association (BVIFA) Competitions Committee has formalized the Calendar for Spring/Summer 2016, with a series of Knockout Cup Tournaments, slated for both the A.O. Shirley Ground and the Virgin Gorda Recreation Ground.

The new season actually begins with the Men’s National team facing two games in the first round of the Scotiabank Caribbean Cup, firstly an away fixture against Martinique on the 22nd March and then a home tie with Dominica on March 26th at the A.O. Shirley Ground in Road Town.

Domestic football will then take centre stage with the Terry Evans Cup for Men and Women’s teams being staged from the 17th April and then a one day ”Nations Cup” , held on Virgin Gorda as part of the Whit Monday Holiday Celebrations.

The Wendoll Williams Cup will then be up for grabs with matches for Men and Women held on both Tortola and Virgin Gorda, starting on June 5th and with a Final scheduled for July 3rd.

According to Committee Chair, Aubrey Liburd, the spring and early summer will be a fiesta of Football for everyone. “As we look to build back up the sports profile ahead of being able to utilize the new venue in East End, it was important to plan a comprehensive season that will satisfy demand and the needs of our Member Clubs. Apart from the Knockout Cups, we are also supporting a Street Soccer imitative by Road Town Wholesale and will also be hosting a Beach Soccer Tournament as well as a CONCACAF Women’s Day Celebration in late May” he commented.

Mr. Liburd also reminded all Clubs that they must have paid up all BVIFA affiliation fees and submitted Rosters to be considered eligible to participate in what will be a fascinating new season.

“Teams have until close of business on Monday March 21st to become completely compliant with the FA’s Constitution and Rules” confirmed Liburd. “We have already extended the time frame, but now all teams must take note of the new deadline and submit their payment and relevant documents to the General Secretary of the FA”.

Any Club requiring further information on the requirements of compliance can also contact the FA Office on 494-5655.

The British Virgin Islands Football Association (BVIFA) President, Mr. Andy Bickerton, along with Mr. Avanell Morton, Assistant Secretary / Operations and Mr. Paul Hewlett, General Secretary, all returned to the Territory last week after the FIFA Elections happy with the result and excited by the future of Football.

Gianni Infantino was elected as the ninth President of the World Governing Body of Football after the second ballot with 115 of 207 total votes, holding off the challenge from Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa.

“We (the FA) supported Infantino in the second round because of declarations made by him in his manifesto and speech at the FIFA Congress,” ” commented Bickerton. “He stated that every member of FIFA should have a national stadium and that’s encouraging as well as his promise to look at increasing the development fund distributions, which would mean the FA could assist Virgin Gorda with improving the Festival ground in a similar way to what is happening at East End.”

Prince Ali Bin el Hussein had been the original first choice of the FA, but once it became apparent that he was struggling after the first round, the FA decided to go with Infantino.

“We intend to continue lobbying FIFA on other issues such as representation rules to play for the country and will also be making a case with the new Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) president when elected in May of this year to bring change to the current rules,” concluded Bickerton.

Morton hailed the election of Infantino as a breath of fresh air. “The BVI and the Caribbean will benefit from having Infantino as the new head of world football,” he stated. “After the result there was a breath of fresh air, relief , joy and happiness. It was a great decision for the entire football family.”

CONCACAF member associations also voted unanimously, during its annual congress held the day before the FIFA congress, to approve a comprehensive package of reforms, which were first outlined in the CONCACAF Reform Framework and later drafted by CONCACAF’s Statutes Reform Committee, at the Confederation’s XXII extraordinary congress. CONCACAF’s revised statutes will become effective immediately as the confederation and its member associations begin implementing the reforms.

The reforms to CONCACAF’s statutes fundamentally change the governance structure of football in the region and set new standards for accountability and transparency within international sports organizations. Once fully implemented, CONCACAF’s new structure will ensure that decisions regarding the confederation’s operations are made in the best interest of CONCACAF member associations, confirm that there is strong external oversight of the CONCACAF Council and General Secretariat, and affirm that CONCACAF’s resources are being utilized to achieve the confederation’s mission of developing and promoting football in the region.
