The Final of the BVIFA Women’s Nine a Side League will be a hotly contested affair between the young and upcoming VG United Girls and their more experienced Ballstarz F.C. Women counterparts, after both recorded comfortable semifinal victories over the weekend.

On Saturday, after a deluge had all but flooded the A.O. Shirley Ground, the Virgin Gorda team, simply had too much pace and desire for the Panthers Women and ran out 4-0 winners, with Loreal George (19th and 28th minute) scoring twice in the first half to all but seal the deal.

Jackisha Rigobert (32nd) also fired home from long range, whilst the tireless Kayla Skelton (60th) deservedly rounded out the scoring in the second half.

A full strength Ballstarz Women, then handed the Avengers their first taste of defeat for the season with a 2-0 win, courtesy of goals from Philia James (42nd) and Morgan Creque (55th) breaking open a game, which had reached half time at 0-0.

The Final, along with the play-off game for third place are all scheduled for Saturday 26th November, on the A.O. Shirley Ground starting at 4.30pm, with the Avengers against the Panthers and then VG Utd taking on the Ballstarz F.C.

Avengers and Ballstarz share six goals in a female football thriller on Sunday after VG Utd Girls come of age on Saturday in the BVIFA Women’s League.

Action last weekend, November 5th and 6th, centered around a titanic struggle between the perennial Women’s Champion team, the Ballstarz and the Avengers from Virgin Gorda playing in their first tournament as an official BVIFA member club.

It looked for all the world like business as usual for the Ballstarz when Phillia James fired home the opening goal in the 29th minute and that’s how it remained until half time.

However, in the space of three second half minutes, the game changed as first Brittany Peters equalized in the 44th, James scored her second in the 46th to make it 2-1 and Keithreece Smith scored in the 47th, almost straight from the kick off, to make it 2-2.

Peters then scored her second in the 67th to give the Avengers a 3-2 lead before, just a minute later, Emerline Lockhart smashed home a long-range equalizer to make the final score 3-3

The teams also share top spot in the standings with 4 points each, whilst the VG Utd Girls are now third following their first ever win in competitive football, 3-1, over the Panthers.

The Girls, the majority of whom are under 16, led early on through the first of a Kayla Skelton brace and despite Jacintha Weekes scoring a sublime equalizer, went ahead from a rocket shot from Kezia Gumbs in the second half and then put the game to bed when Skelton forced home in the 49th minute to make it 3-1.

BDO Primary School and BVIFA High School Leagues update

Whilst many games have been lost to rains, there has still been plenty of action, excitement and goals in the BDO Primary and BVIFA High School Leagues.

In the BDO Primary U7’s, Montessori School are top of the standings, but only on goal difference from Cedar School “Green”, having won both their games played so far and with the league’s top scorer, Charlie Potgeiter (5) in top form.

Begrado Flax sit in third place and would have hoped to have gone top in their latest game, against the Seventh Day Adventist School. However, as it turned out they were indebted to a late equalizer from Drekailly Findlay to share the points. Findlay had also cancelled out Nazri Jones’s first half opener, before J’Lynn Penn made it 2-1 to SDA at the break.

Findlay secured the point with his 18th minute goal to make it 2-2.

In the U9 Division, Group A, there has been little action so far, but a 3-0 win for First Impression’s against Joyce Samuel Primary sees them sit atop the group.

In Group B, Robinson O’Neal Primary and Cedar School “White” have identical records to sit one and two in the standings, as they both beat St Georges and Pelican Gate, 2-0, respectively.

Meanwhile in the U12’s, Cedar “Green” got their campaign off to a winning start, 3-1, against Begrado Flax, courtesy of goals from Ryan Lettsome, Azarni Callwood and Nici Haycraft. An own goal briefly made it 1-1, but in the end the Green’s had too much firepower.

Alexandrina Maduro Primary are unbeaten at the top of the Group with two wins from two, with the latest being a 3-0 romp against Pelican Gate, as Felix Walters scored twice and Keryan Provost once.

Joyce Samuel Primary moved into second place with a 4-0 victory against Leonora Delville Primary, thanks to a hat trick from M’Khori Crabbe and a goal in the just the third minute from Jesse Cockburn.

Althea Scatliffe Primary sit in third after they overcame Jost Van Dyke Primary, 3-0, on goals from DeAndre Rogers and Jahari Lacey (2).

Most of the High School action has been in the U14 Boys Division, which sees Elmore Stoutt High currently pipping Begrado Flax to the top spot on goal difference.

The pair shared nine goals in their first clash of the season with ESHS holding on to win 5-4 with Johnathon Jarris putting the hosts up 5-2 before a late onslaught from the Virgin Gorda boys saw them pull it back to 5-4 with a few nervous moments left to play.

Marcus Butler, Sheldon Harry and Jeremy Grant all scored for ESHS in the first half, whilst Division top scorer Jahdique Winchester (7), pulled one back before the break for BFEC. In the second half Shamari Maduro made it 4-2, T’Khoi Richardson then made it 4-2, Jarris 5-2 and then both Winchester and Richardson netted again to almost secure at least a deserved point.

St George’s are in third place as they put defeats to ESHS (2-5) and BFEC (3-4) behind them to beat District 3 rivals, SDA, 3-1, with goals from Guillaume Parkins and Jalen Prentice (2)

In the High School Boys, Open Division, BFEC beat ESHS, 2-0, in the only game played so far, thanks to goals from, yes you guessed it, Winchester and Sheldon Toohey.

In the Girls Division, SDA held on to beat St Georges, making their debut in the tournament, 2-1, after Sheniece St Jean had scored from the penalty spot. However earlier goals from Marline Daguiar and Neemie Odvil provided just enough of a cushion.

One Love F.C. reignited their season with a double digit win against VG Utd and the Sugar Boys dented the aspirations of the Rebels with a 5-1 victory as the National League continued on the weekend.

The timing of the fixture against bottom of the table, VG Utd was perfect for One Love, who have had a disappointing season by their usual high standards, but were able to help themselves to a 10-0 demolition of the shorthanded visitors.

The pre-Christmas presents came early and often, gift wrapped and hand delivered from the 9th minute when Trevor Ellis fired home, beating the keeper at his near post. Carl Stewart scored the first of what was to become a hat trick in the 22nd minute and further strikes before the break came from Damien Morgan and Oshane Rose.

Richard Morgan got in on the act with a second half brace as did Andre Thomas, before Stewart completed his hat trick, making the final score 10-0.

The Sugar Boys then cemented their second place in the standings with a comprehensive 5-1 win over the Rebels, who suffered their second successive defeat to teams in the top four.

Derol Redhead got a frantic opening few minutes going with a goal in the 4th minute, which was negated by Michael Baptichon’s penalty in the 11th minute, before Redhead put the Sugar Boys back ahead less than a minute later and Mohamed Kaschour made it 3-1 in the 17th minute.

Terrance Nanton increased the lead with a goal in the 79th minute and Akeem Hendrikson rounded out the 5-1 win with a goal in the 84th.

On Sunday, the Panthers dreadful start to the campaign continued unabated as they had no answer to a penalty kick in each half successfully converted by the Leagues top scorer, Kenmore Peters and lost 2-0 to Old Madrid.

The clash at the top of the National League, between the Islanders and Rebels F.C, on Saturday, was a great advert for the domestic game and decided by Fitzroy Daley, who scored the only goal of a tense, dramatic affair for the Islanders.

His well taken goal came in the 20th minute and left the Islanders still top of the standings on 18 points ahead of the Rebels, who fall to fourth place, by goal difference, behind the Sugar Boys and Wolues.

The Wolues leap frogged into third place with their 2-1 win over One Love, whose disappointing run continues.

Kevin Carragher gave One Love an early lead through an own goal, but he then equalized for the Wolues at the right end, before Leo Forte wrapped up all 3 points for the surging Wolues, in the 47th minute.

Old Madrid F.C destroyed a shorthanded Virgin Gorda United, but took a long time to open the scoring against the eight opponents, before the flood gates opened, with Kenmore Peters netting a hat trick, taking his seasons tally to six.

The final score was 5-1, with Sheldon Harry and Kenrick Leslie also on the score sheet, whilst Jackson Rigobert scored a consolation for VG Utd.

In Women’s League action, Laverne Fahie scored once in each half to give the Avengers a 2-1 victory over VG Utd Girls, after Jackisha Rigobert had equalized mid-way through the second half.

Rain may have diluted the crowd on Sunday, despite two exciting games, but nothing could detract from the excitement and enthusiasm which met the kick off of the Women’s League on Saturday, on the A.O. Shirley Ground.

The Women’s League is supporting Breast Cancer Awareness and the President of the BVI Cancer Society, Mrs. Gloria Fahie was on hand to give opening remarks as well as BVIFA President, Mr. Andy Bickerton, Sharlene Pond, Chair of the BVIFA Women’s Committee and Mrs. “Bold and Breastless”,  Shondia McFadden-Sabari.

“It’s a pleasure to be here tonight,” commented Bickerton. “The BVIFA take Women’s football very seriously, we are concerned about the number of females in the youth programme and we are looking at how to improve participation.”

“Women Rock!,” noted Mrs. Fahie. “I just want to thank you all for partnering with the Cancer Society. I’m glad you young ladies are active as the more active you are the less likelihood there is of you getting cancer.”

Shondia McFadden-Sabari, a double breast cancer survivor enthused the girls to keep on doing what they are doing and Ms. Pond invited everyone to get behind the women’s football initiatives. “I want to encourage everyone to try and push the BVI Football Community forward, to have a vision, so we can grow the women’s game and all football together.”

The game that followed was a further indication of how women’s game is developing as the Ballstars overcame the Panthers 2-1 in an entertaining match, full of excitement, speed and skill.

The Panthers went ahead against the run of play with Silvia Massicot firing home from the edge of the box and then Lilly Pierce netted the equalizer before the Panthers conceded an own goal to hand the Ballstars all three points.

In men’s action, the Islanders comfortably maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 4-0 win over VG united as Andy Davis scored the opened the scoring in the first half and further goals came in the second from Kevin Fisher, Devon Leteen and Nano Ottley.

The Wolues then crushed the Panthers 5-0, with goals coming from Kevin Carragher (2), Marc Savage (2) and James Drury, whilst on Sunday the Rebels beat One Love, 3-2.

D’Angelo Thomas and Joel Williams (2) scored for the Rebels and Richard Morgan netted twice for One Love, to join Kevin Fisher and Mohammed Kachour as the leagues joint top scorers, with 5 each.

The Sugar Boys rounded out the weekend with a scrappy 2-1 victory over Old Madrid, courtesy of goals from Mohammed Kachour and Terrence Nanton, who scored the winner from the penalty spot after Trevor Peters had equalized for Old Madrid.

Whilst the Islanders put a dent in the title hopes of the Wolues and the Sugar Boys stormed all over Virgin Gorda, the surprise result of the weekend’s National Leagues fixtures was without doubt Old Madrid’s 3-2 victory over One Love F.C.

Trevor Peters opened the scoring in the 7th minute before Talisman striker, Kenmore Peters, made it 2-0 in the 17th minute before Andre Thomas pulled one back for One Love in the 34th minute.

However, the goal of the game came from Matthew Daley in the 37th minute and restored the two goal advantage for Old Madrid, when he won the ball in the midfield, cut across the 18-yard box and unleashed a curling effort past the keeper and into the net.

One Love mounted some severe pressure on the Old Madrid defense in the second half, but ultimately it took an individual piece of brilliance from Uriah Jnr Baptiste in the 70th minute to make it 3-2 and set up some anxious moments for Old Madrid, but they held on to claim all three points.

The Rebels then condemned the Panthers to another defeat with a comfortable 4-0 victory, which began in bizarre circumstances, when straight after Joel Williams’ headed opener, the Panthers had goal keeper, Edgber Isaac sent off for a second yellow card.

His first came for a rash challenge on the edge of his own area and the second when seemingly in frustration at his own defenders for blaming him for the goal, he removed his shirt.

The reshuffled Panthers survived until just before the half time break when Curtly Peters made it 2-0 in the 41st minute. Michael Baptichon made it 3-0 soon after the restart, from the penalty spot. Andrew Morrison pulled one back for the Panthers but Baptichon added a fourth, scoring his second in added time at the end of the game to make it 4-1.

On Sunday, the Sugar Boys won the Local derby with VG United, 5-0, with all the goals coming in the second half during some heavy rains that swept the A.O. Shirley Ground.

Mohamed Kashour scored the first goal of the game in the 47th minute and went onto complete his hat trick with further goals in the 75th and 78th minutes. Michael Castello netted in the 73rd minute and Allon Williams fired home in the 77th.

The Islanders then maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with a hard fought, but ultimately comprehensive, 4-0 win over the Wolues with, just like in the VG derby, all the goals coming in the second half.

Nano Ottley scored in the 52nd minute, Kevin Fisher added the second, rounding the out-rushing Andre Gaymes in the 57th minute. Francis Primo repeated the same scenario in the 86th minute and then Montgomery Butler scored from the penalty spot in the 91st to make it 4-0.

The Islanders F.C. got the weekend’s action in the National League on the A.O. Shirley Ground, with their third straight win, 4-0, with the Panthers being the latest to be outplayed by perennial league Champions.

Results of Saturday, October 1

Avondale Williams smashed home a 25-yard half volley to open the scoring in just the 4th minute, although it took the league leaders another 20 minutes to double their advantage, mainly thanks to some heroics in the Panthers goal by young debutant, Phillip Jules.

He, though, was powerless to stop the unmarked Kevin Fisher from making it 2-0 from close range at the far post in the 25th minute, latching on to a cross from Marcus Lake. Jules was not to be blamed for the third goal four minutes later either when Fisher, again unmarked, was allowed to control and had no blame as Fisher controlled Jamal Sergeants’ free kick and fired home.

The Panthers held their illustrious opponents at bay for almost the entire second half until Rohan Lennon controlled a long ball from Andy Davis, rounded the keeper, substitute Edgber Isaac, and made it 4-0 in added time at the end of the game.

The Sugar Boys then ran out as 5-1 winners of a tempestuous affair against One Love F.C.

Three red cards and numerous yellows punctuated a gripping match that had seen the team’s inseparable at half time, 1-1, with Derol Redheads early opener cancelled out by a long range drive from Richard Morgan.

Lenroy Murray was the first to get his marching orders and, although One Love were now down to ten men, they had a go-ahead goal disallowed before Mohammed Kashour put the Boys 2-1 up in the 53rd minute. Roger Roberts made it 3-1 in the 73rd minute, before Richard Morgan was given his marching orders in the 75th, scything down Terrence Nanton in the penalty box.

Leonard Davis made no mistake from the spot to make it 4-1 and, before the game was done, One Love’s Craig Sinclair was also sent off for a rash tackle on Kashour.

Results of Sunday, October 2

The Wolues demolished a disorganized Virgin Gorda United, 5-1, with Kevin Carragher scoring the first with a deflected long range shot in the 5th minute. The cushion of a second goal came in the 30th minute when Leo Forte was first to react after Camille Benjamin had half blocked a shot from Xavier Arnougili.

Both teams had several chances to score during the second half and despite being reduced to ten men with the sending off of Troy Williams, Xavier John gave VG a lifeline in the 81st minute, making it 2-1. However, the Wolues were always dangerous on the break and the introduction of Alessandro Palladino paid dividends for the Wolues as he netted in the 80th minute to restore the two goal advantage. Forte grabbed his second in the 87th to make it 4-1 and Pallandino rounded things out in the 89th with his second and the Wolues 5th.

The last game of the weekend saw the Rebels maintain a 100% start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Old Madrid courtesy of two first half goals, Kevaughn Watson in the 19th minute and Howard Johnson in the 25th.

Anselm Joseph nodded home in the 51st minute for Old Madrid, but there would be no further scoring.

Wolues, Rebels, One Love, and Islanders secure weekend wins

Whilst many awaited the mouthwatering clash between the Islanders F.C. and the Sugar Boys F.C. the match of the weekend was the first game on Saturday 24th September, between the Wolues F.C. and Old Madrid.

In the first thirty minutes of the game, the only excitement to get the crowd engaged was the appearance of two paragliders landing on the A.O. Shirley Ground, apparently diverted from their attended target of Nanny Cay by a lack of wind.

However, after two goals were disallowed for offside, just two corners, both to Old Madrid and only one shot on target, Kenmore Peters arrived at the far post, unmarked, to head home a Sheldon Harry free kick in the 35th minute.

Leo Forte almost leveled for the Wolues moments later as he burst through the midfield towards goal only to be denied by a last gasp tackle from Courtney Johnson as he lined up his shot.

A delightful interchange of passes between Timothy Parsons and Xavier Arnougili saw the latter fire inches wide to sound further alarm bells in the Old Madrid defense, which had up until the dyeing moments of the first half, been expertly organized by Danny Joseph.

The Wolues finally got a deserved equalizer in the 64th minute when Christopher Farmer fired home a volley from an acute angle, latching onto a half clearance following a Rory Greenan free kick.

Peters almost put Old Madrid back in front with a diving header, but in the 68th minute, substitute Noel Maxwell put the Wolues up 2-1 with a curling effort evading the dive of Dion Clarke in the Madrid goal.

In the 80th minute Peters arrived unmarked again at the Wolues far post to nod home the equalizer after a free kick from the Madrid left deceived Andre Gaymes in the Wolues goal, but James Drury secured all three points for the Wolues with a 25-yard free kick, which went up and over the wall and past the despairing Clarke to make it 3-2 in the 87th minute.

The Rebels F.C. then made a winning start to their campaign with a 3-1 victory over VG United, with a first half goal scored by Michael Baptichon, cancelled out by Xavier John in the 64th minute before Howard Johnson restored the advantage a minute later and Baptichon scored his second and the Rebels third in the 80th minute.

On Sunday, Uriah Jnr. Baptiste put One Love on the way to a 3-1 win over the Panthers, scoring in the 33rd minute, before two second half goals from Richard Morgan confirmed the win, despite Kenny Emmanuel giving the Panthers reason to hope for at least a share of the points with his 66th minute equalizer.

The Islanders then secured a 2-0 win over arch rivals, the Sugar Boys with goals from Kevin Fisher, who bundled home a loose ball from close range in the first half and Nano Ottley in the second.

The third Physical Literacy workshop is underway, running from September 27 – 28 at the Fort Burt Hotel Conference room.

The workshop, organized by the BVI Olympic Committee and conducted by Drew Mitchell, Director of Physical Literacy for the Sport for Life Society in Canada, is directed at sports coaches and representatives of the territory’s national sport federations as well as day-care and pre-school teachers and managers, health care providers and elderly care givers.

“Physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.” – The International Physical Literacy Association, May 2014

Research shows that without the development of Physical Literacy, many children and youth withdraw from physical activity and sport and turn to more inactive and/or unhealthy choices during their leisure time.

Miss Beverlie Brathwaite, an Education Officer attached to the Ministry of Education sees Physical Literacy as a positive vehicle to champion the cause for a healthier nation and success in the classroom.

“Just as there are basic skills in literacy and numeracy which, when mastered, help students to become competent and motivated, we now know that there are basic skills in movement which have the same effect on students’ confidence, competence and motivation. Also, since there is growing research evidence of the positive link between physical activity and academic success, we see this exposure to Physical Literacy as a gateway to both healthy lives and academic success for our students.”

This workshop aims to also give assistance to the selected sports of Football, Rugby, Tennis, Sailing, Basketball, Athletics, Archery and Swimming as they continue the task to complete a Long Term Athlete Development pathway for their sport.

The first session took place in February and covered the key factors pertinent to athlete development and the 5 basic ‘S’s of training and performance – Stamina (Endurance), Strength, Speed, Skill, and Suppleness (Flexibility).

The second session, which took place in May, focused on discussing the project outlines in the areas of Sport, Health and Education that followed on from the first workshop.

The Physical Literacy Workshops are supported by the Sport for Life Society of Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC), the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Health.
