Khari Creque and Katrina Crumpler, foiled Tarique “Tweety” and his sister Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses’ quest to become the first brother and sister overall Highland Spring College Classic 5K Series champions in history at the conclusion of the 2014 edition on Saturday morning.

Tarique had beaten Creque who won the series opener in the last two races and a victory would have given him sole possession of the overall title and derailed Creque’s bid for a fourth successive crown.

Creque ran a controlled race, overhauled Tarique to win by 14 seconds in 11 minutes and 36.14 seconds, to grab a share of the title with his main rival.

“I just wanted to run faster than in my other races as my conditioning wasn’t all that good and for the past three weeks, I’ve been focusing on that so it felt pretty good running today,” Creque explained. “I tried to create some separation and keep the separation because I didn’t want to take the chance of a sprinting race coming home with him, so I had to keep the distance between us.”

With Crumpler winning the last race, Tarika the second and Samantha John the first, the title was up for grabs by any of the three females.

Crumpler — fresh off placing fourth in the Diva Half Marathon in Puerto Rico last weekend ahead of facing St. Thomas’ Ruth Ann David in the BVI Sunrise Half Marathon this weekend— held off Tarika’s late charge to win in 13:01.64 to Tarika’s 13:02.75.

“I was the third lady all the time up the incline to the turnaround and I didn’t think I was going to catch them,” Crumpler admitted. “It was only at the top of the hill I passed them. I was pretty convinced they were going to catch me on the way back because they have done in the past. I went down as hard as I could, didn’t look backwards and managed to stay ahead of them somehow.”

It was Crumpler’s first time competing in the series and says her focus is more on the longer races. “I’m quite surprised to win as I’ve never done these races before and it was nice to improve my time over the series,” she stated.

The Rotary Club of Tortola won the service clubs Cross Country division for the 10th successive year and eleven overall. Cedar Secondary pulled off a 3-peat while their parents returned to win the Community Partners division. Joyce Samuel Primary who made their debut this year, finished behind Althea Scatliffe Team I and ahead of Francis Lettsome.

Race Director Stephanie Russ Penn described the final race as excellent with great finishes.
“It started out being exciting not knowing who would be top male, top female and it was just great to see the usual excitement of the participants and persons going out there, pushing themselves and doing their best,” regardless, she pointed out. “It was a really great end to the 19th year of races at the college. Congratulations to all the winners and all who came out and supported the series on Tortola and Virgin Gorda.”

A record number of persons have met early bird registration for the 9th Deloite-Ogier BVI Sunrise Half Marathon scheduled for November 22 officials revealed during a media briefing at the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports on Thursday.

“We’re very excited about this year’s race,” race director Kay Reddy, said. “The first race was nine years ago and Simon (Cook) with a lot of help from Deloite and Mark Chapman kicked it off and it was a bit of fun run along the coast but it has grown and grown. This year, Deolite and Ogier have increased the sponsorship and helped it to grow,” Reddy added.

“Another big addition to the race is we now have online registration which has become very exciting because at this stage, we have 72 persons registered—22 from Puerto Rico; 25 from the U.S. Virgin Islands and five from the USA,” she revealed nothing that the bulk of those preregistered are not from the BVI. “We expect the BVI runners will pop along their registration when they know they are fit and they are healthy to do it.”

Reddy said 150 persons are expected to toe the line at 6 a.m. on Nov 22 when the race starts at the Tortola Sports Club in Pasea, where it will also finish. Final registration will be held between 5-7 p.m. on Nov 21 at the Tortola Sports Club and costs $60.

Race founder Cook, who has been away from the territory for the last seven years, said he’s impressed with the 72 registered noting that the first race had about 40 participants.

“We didn’t have this sort of money that you guys have now,” he said of the $3000 provided by Deloite and Ogier. “It’s great to see and Kay has done a good job of promoting it and building the numbers. It’s a thankless task really and a lot of work, a lot of commitment so I praise her very highly. It’s great to see it’s still going strongly and I hope it carries on that way.”

Ray Wearmouth, a partner at Ogier said they are delighted to be involved in the event and partner with Deloite. Reflecting on the short history of the event, he said it has really grown from those 40 brave souls in 2005. He noted that in 2010 the OECS Half Marathon was staged in conjunction with the event as one of many highlights.

“We saw a packed international field and an ex Olympian came here and set the record of 1 hour, 07 minutes and 38 seconds, so from a sponsor’s perspective, it’s fantastic to be involved in the race,” said Ray.

“It really does reach the community. People come out and support the event but perhaps more importantly we have people that are taking on a Half Marathon for the first time. So we see people achieving some great personal things with their family supporting so it has become a wider event. A lot of commitment goes into this event and we are thankful to be involved and partner with Deloite and look forward to continuing our involvement in the future as the race develops and grows,” he said.

Carlene Romney, a director at Deloite, said they are delighted to be involved again and partner with Ogier.

“We look forward to having our visitors from Puerto Rico, the USVI and the USA and being in the forefront of sports tourism as has been noted, we think it’s a very important event for this activity,” Carlene said. “We look forward to sponsoring it in the years to come.”

A resurgent Steven Asson—who overcame recurrent back problems that caused him to quit running at one time before a low key return to racing once again—ended two and a half years of frustration by overhauling this two early leading opponents to win the Ceres Juices 10k Series finale on Saturday afternoon.

On the women’s side, just two days before her 13th birthday, Tallulah Kinkead gave herself an early birthday present by winning the women’s division.

Asson who last won the race in November 2011, in 39 minutes and 53 seconds, had a winning time of 41:21, after overhauling early co-leaders Julius Farley who was second in 42:56 and Curvin Andrews third in 43:26.

“This is two and a half years I haven’t won a race,” Asson noted. “I was not able to run only just to take a little jog sometimes and the way I felt, I quit then made up my mind to start back again. But in this run today, in my mind, I didn’t come to race. I just came to run and the rhythm and the pace I had I kept it and was successful.”

Asson passed Andrews just before the Ellis Thomas Downs and overhauled Farley about 600m later. He said looking at Farley’s leg turnover and the way he heard him breading coupled with the way he was feeling, he knew he could possibly win.

“I didn’t surge anywhere,” he explained. “I just held the rhythm and ran smoothly.”

Despite the loss, Farley was the series’ overall men’s champion. “Today wasn’t my day and I have to congratulate Steven,” he said noting that he had stitches from the start, which intensified as the race went on. “That kind of slowed me down a bit. Steven and Andrews (Curvin) kept a good pace and I tried to compete with Steven but I just couldn’t make it. I had to give up and settle for second.”

Kinkead ran 48:25 to win the women’s division. “I felt good but Kat (Katrina Crumpler) wasn’t here so that’s why I won,” Kinkead said. “The races are really fun. I like the people who do them.”

Race director Kay Reddy says the series gets better and better each year.

“This is one of the best supported (events) we had almost 70 for the first race and we’ve had a lot of people complete three races and we’ve had a lot of people getting personal bests,” she noted. “It was fast and furious at the front, we’ve had some changes and new faces on the block. Ceres put in a lot of effort and new products. It’s has just been a smashing series all around.”

After Katrina Crumpler crossed the finish line, Highland Spring College Classic Series director Stephanie Russ Penn, said “the series has just become interesting.”

Penn was referring to the fact that each of the first three races had been won by  a different women, with Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses who won race two finishing third in 13 minutes and 33.20 seconds; race one winner Samantha John placing second in 13:23.23 with Crumpler getting her first win of the series on Saturday in 13:05.56.

“I was a bit stronger today and I managed to win this time,” Crumpler said. “I went harder on the hill and powered past all the ladies when I was feeling fresh. Last time I got caught on the downhill but I must have made a little more ground on the hill this time and managed to keep the pace.”

Regarding the finale, Crumpler agreed it’s going to be a showdown and its nice to have competition.
“It can be anyone of us,” she said. “Probably one of those two because I’m a lot older.”

Tarique Moses put himself in the drivers seat with another victory over defending champ Khiry  Creque after running 11:27.56 to win. He said he was surprised because he was feeling sick.

“I don’t know if I’m getting Chickungunya or what but I wasn’t expecting to run that fast, that’s surprising to me,” he said. “It was a hot pace to start and Khiry was 15m ahead of me but on the way back it seems like he started to wobble or got tired. The return is the strongest past of my race so I managed to catch him and went leave him.”

Leading the series 2-1 over Creque with one race to go, Moses said he’s a competitor he always wanted to take down and would be happy to win the overall title on Nov 15.

The territory’s Premier Dr. Orlando Smith was among participants. He had been dropping his wife Lorna off to races to compete on the Rotary Club of Tortola’s team but his grandson gave him an invitation.

“This is quite a good experience being out in the early morning and getting a run, it was good,” he said. “I’m quite pleased to see so many people participating. What it tells me is there’s a lot of people in the community who are conscious about their health and the need for exercise and I think more people should become engaged.”

Leading local long distance runner, Katrina Crumpler placed 10th in the women’s division of the NACAC Petit Bourg 10km road race in Guadeloupe on Saturday.

The race attracted 201 participants from around the region including Mexico, Rwanda and Kenya.

“It was the first time I’ve run the race and I didn’t know where the hills were and there were lots of them—nothing steep but continuous so it was hard to get into a rhythm—there were lots of turns too,” explained Crumpler who was timed in 46 minutes in 15 seconds in the hot conditions. “I liked the course. It was very scenic and pretty. You don’t get bored with it and it was quite interesting. There was very good support as well.”

Crumpler who has run 43:30 before, said she wasn’t sure what time she’d do, said she was quite pleased with the performance.

“I would have liked to run a bit quicker but getting tenth was excellent,” she said. “I loved running with the other girls because you don’t get that in Tortola very often and it was so inspiring to see the women who are quicker than you. There were some amazing athletes there—men and women—so I loved seeing them.”

Crumpler will be gearing up to run in the November 22 Ogier/Deloite BVI Sunrise Half Marathon. Some 55 persons have already preregistered for the event including 14 from Puerto Rico.

Her husband Russell who accompanied her and decided to race finished 100th overall with a time of 48:48.

Repeating their success from the Beef Island 10k earlier in the road racing season, Julius Farley, and tender teenager, Tallulah Kinkead led a fast field in Saturday’s Ceres Juices 10K Series tour stop at Trellis Bay, Beef Island. Dubbed the “Steel Man Warm up” the course comprised three laps of the Eastern tip of Beef Island over rolling terrain.

A cat and mouse game developed between the lead pack of Farley, Ian Montgomery, Ravi Sukhu and James Carr, as they led the first lap while sizing up each other. On the second lap Farley and Montgomery broke away and opened up a small lead. Farley then pushed the pace on the third lap to shake Montgomery, leaving the field unable to respond and took the tape in 41 minutes and 48 seconds. Montgomery ran 42:59 in second with Sukhu placing third in 43:42.

In the women’s division, Rosmond Johnson established a swift 7:30 min/mile pace, notching up the tempo for the first four miles. However, Johnson was unable to hold the pace on the last lap with soon to be 13-year old Tallulah Kinkead on her trail.

Kinkead slowly and methodically reeled in Johnson and seized the lead with a mile left for a 48 seconds margin of victory over Johnson, covering the course in 48:06. Johnson finished in 48:54 with Claire-Louise Whiley rounding off the podium places in 49:32.

In the power walking field Gerry Rose and Jenny McConnell teamed up to win their respective divisions

It was a joint event with the Virgin Gorda (VG) Branch of the BVI Cancer Society, at Race #2 of the Virgin Gorda leg of the HLSCC Highland Spring Race Series. The walk/run fundraiser was especially slated to bring greater recognition to the Virgin Gorda Community regarding childhood cancer given that October is Childhood Cancer Awareness month.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Walk/Run fundraiser
Over eighty persons walked or ran in support of Childhood Cancer Awareness while some concurrently competed as part of the race series. Competitors completed the College races’ 2 mile route while other participants completed a longer route taking them to the top of the Baths and back.

Race Director Stephanie Russ Penn indicated that it was a pleasure for HLSCC to partner and assist in this community event and help in the awareness efforts. The event was coordinated jointly with Debbie Bruce and other members of the VG Branch of the BVI Cancer Society.

“This event was another opportunity to re-enforce and further educate the community and the youth about one of the silent killers otherwise known as Cancer,” said Ms Bruce.  She urges greater participation and more serious action in the future to bring greater awareness to the community as cancer has no age and no knowledge of culture and nationality.

Collectively, Ms Bruce and Mrs. Russ Penn extend much appreciation to the children of the various schools, parents, the wider community and the members of the VG Cancer Society Branch for the support and organization of the event.
