The BVI community including schools, faith-based organisations and the private and public sector are encouraged to promote active lifestyles on April 6 in observation of World Physical Activity Day.

Coordinator for Health Promotions Services, Ms. Ivy George said the day will be observed on April 6 under the theme ‘Active People Happy People’, and the community is encouraged to organise walks, physical activity and other events that encourage movement.

Ms. George said, “Our main message is to encourage people to become involved in physical activity for 60 minutes every day for children and minimum of 30 minutes five days a week for adults. In order for physical activity to be sustainable you have to be active your way.  You have to make it fun. The more you move the greater the health benefits and the better you will feel.”

Ms. George advocated for a paradigm shift from health complacency to health consciousness and added, “We want to see the community incorporating more physical activity as part of their everyday lives. Moderate to vigorous physical activity can improve health and well-being, lower health care costs, and improve school and work productivity.”

The aim of World Physical Activity Day is to reduce the rate of physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle in the general population and to promote the adoption of active lifestyles. The day’s activities will also seek to raise the public’s awareness on the epidemic of inactivity and the importance of an active lifestyle to improve health and prevent chronic non-communicable diseases.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development has implemented a ten-year strategy to improve the health and well-being of the population and reduce the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases. The strategy prioritises prevention by integrating policies and action across multiple settings where people live, play and work to improve health and save lives.

All the Age Group BDO Primary Schools Finals on Wednesday, 22nd March, 2017, were fiercely competitive between teams of equal skill and discipline with a shared will to win, whilst showing great sportsmanship despite the final outcome.

Of course, there can only be one winner and in the U7’s, which got off to a great start in front of a large crowd in the Grandstand at the A.O. Shirley Ground, Cedar Green eventually won 3-1 on penalties against Montessori, after the game had remained deadlocked at 0-0 until the final whistle.

The U9 encounter between Althea Scatliffe and Robinson O’Neal proved equally exciting with end-to-end action highlighting a game that was eventually decided by the predatory instincts of Latriel Williams.

A bouncing ball was only half dealt with by the defense allowing Williams to slip in between two defenders and volley home past the goal keeper.

In the U12’s an acrobatic Nicky Haycraft goal in the second half proved to be the only goal of the game in Cedar’s 1-0 win over Begrado Flax.

The MVP’s for each Final were named as Ethan Mohammed for Cedar Green in the U7’s, Latriel Williams for ASPS in the U9’s and Haycraft of Cedar School in the U12’s.

Golden Glove recipients were Steven Portus (Enid Scatliffe – U7), Akeem Paddy (ASPS – U9) and Ollie Henderson (Cedar Sch. -U12).

The Golden Boot honorees were Sam Potgeiter (Montesorri, 24 – U7), Jaden Quashie (Robinson O’Neal, 18 – U9) and Azarni Callwood (Cedar School, 15 – U12).

The Overall League MVP’s were Charlie Potgeiter (Montesorri – U7), Quashie (U9) and Ryan Lettsome (Cedar School, – U12).

In addition to all the Primary School trophies, the BVIFA High School champions also received their awards with Jakisha Rigobert (BFEC) named as Girls’ MVP, Kaylah Skelton (BFEC), and Lilly Pierce (Cedar) jointly as Golden Boots (10 each) and Davian Williams as Golden Gloves.

BFEC were also crowned as League Champions.

In the Open High School Boys, BFEC added the League Championship trophy to the Avanell “Clarky” Morton Cup and also saw Diego Jimenez (BFEC) named as MVP as well as Golden Gloves, whilst Chadwick Evans (ESHS), took home the Golden Boots trophy

In the U14 Tournament, ESHS were declared Champions and along with the trophy, were also presented with the President’s Cup, which they won as part of Opening Day celebrations, back in October 2016.

Golden Boot was Jahdique Winchester (BFEC), MVP, Sheldon Harry (ESHS) and Golden Glove Glenford Prentice (ESHS).

Re-joining of the Olympic Movement will put the sport right in the highlight of development and participation regionally throughout 2017, but for now attention was focused on home soil as That’s Ya Problem took on the Hawks.

A very one sided game ended in a 10-0 victory for That’s Ya Problem, who had 4 hits, 1 error and left 6 runners on base. The Hawks had 2 hits, 3 errors and left 5 runners on base.

During a remarkable performance, BVI’s own powerhouse in the discipline of Shot Put, D’Jimon Gumbs was able to break his standing National Youth Record three times in one meet.

Participating in the Development Meet held over the weekend, Saturday, March 18 at the A. O. Shirley Recreational Grounds, D’Jimon now boasts of a throw of 17.20m (56ft 5 1//4 inches), a new National Youth Record.

This distance places him at the top three of his class, under 18 boys.

In a meet held earlier in January 2017, he first established his youth record with a throw of 16.43m.

His performance made him the first athlete from the Territory to qualify for the 2017 Carifta Games in Curacao, April 15-17, as well as the World Under 18 Youth Championships in Kenya, July 2017.

Meanwhile, his brother Diamonte Gumbs secured his Carifta qualifier in the Shot Put as well, with a toss of 15.96m (52feet, 4.3 inches), surpassing the qualifying mark of 15.75m.
