The Virgin Islands will be represented by ten athletes in two sports at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games which will be held on the East coast of Australia from April 4 – 15, 2018.

The BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC) in its capacity as the Commonwealth Games Association (CGA), is the local entity responsible for managing and undertaking the administration requirements for participation. The CGA also serves as the body to whom National Federations present their qualified athletes to undergo the selection process.

The following athletes have been selected based on their performance in the national and international arena:

Track and Field athletes include Ashley Kelly (400m), Chantel Malone (Long Jump), Tahesia Harrigan-Scott (100m), Tynelle Gumbs (Discus and Hammer Throw), Trevia Gumbs (Discus and Shot Put), Eldred Henry (Discus and Shot Put), Khari Herbert (400m), and Kyron McMaster (400m Hurdles).

Squash players include Joe Chapman (Squash Singles and Doubles), and Neville Sorrentino (Squash Singles and Doubles).

Commending the athletes on their selection, CGA President, Ephraim Penn said, “The Commonwealth Games is one of the five main international sporting events that VI athletes aspire to compete in and it’s not easy to be selected. We have a restriction on the number of athletes that can take part in the Games based on our past participation, and the selected sports men and women should be justifiably proud that their hard work and commitment has paid off. We are excited to be heading off with what is perhaps one of the largest and strongest teams to represent the territory at these Games.”

Noting further that the August floods, and Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused severe damage to sporting facilities in the VI resulting in the set back of the progress of sports in the territory, Mr. Penn said “We recognize the effort, determination and perseverance required by the athletes to stay on track despite the challenges that they faced from the impact of the storms on their homes, their families and not least, the tragic loss of Athletics head coach, Dag Samuels. The CGA highly commends and congratulates all those selected and looks forward to the positive impact a successful Games will have on the morale of all our athletes and the territory.”

Events are spread out over a number of venues and the Gold Coast’s Carrara Stadium will be the venue for Athletics and the opening and closing ceremonies, while Squash will be held at Oxenford.

“I visited the Gold Coast 2018 venues at the end of 2017 and was impressed with the facilities that await our athletes,” said Mr. Mark Chapman, Chef De Mission for GC2018. “Australia is a long-haul trip and many of our athletes will begin their journey in a few weeks so that they can settle in, acclimate and get on with their training regime ahead of their events. I am in regular contact with the athletes and coaches both directly and through the National Federations to ensure that everyone is informed and well prepared for these exciting Games.”

Officials attending the Games include Mark Chapman, Chef de Mission; Julie Pearson, Attaché; Athletics coaches Loren Seagrave, Joey Scott, Winston Potter, and Omar Jones; and Squash coach Adam Murrills. Mark Latimer will be the Team Physio.

The BVI CGA will be represented by President, Ephraim Penn and Secretary General, Lloyd Black.

It is expected that Dr. The Honourable Kedrick Pickering will also be in attendance as a representative of the Virgin Islands.

Conducted every four years since inception in 1930, the GC2018 will be the 21st edition of the sporting event known as the Friendly Games. To date the VI has participated in 7 Commonwealth Games, the first being in athletics in Auckland, New Zealand in 1990. The Gold Coast 2018 Games will be the territory’s 8th appearance and is the first major international event since the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

The GC2018 opening ceremony will kick off when the Queen’s Baton Relay – the pre-cursor to the Commonwealth Games which toured through the Virgin Islands July 2 – 4, 2017 – is run into the Carrara Stadium and the Queen’s message to the athletes is removed from the Baton and read to the athletes.

With more than 6,600 athletes and team officials expected from 70 Commonwealth nations and territories from 6 continents to come together to participate in the Friendly Games, organizers of the GC2018 say that this will be the largest sporting event that Australia will see this decade and will be the biggest sporting spectacular the Gold Coast has ever seen.

The Commonwealth Games Federation vision is to build peaceful, sustainable and prosperous communities globally by inspiring Commonwealth Athletes to drive the impact and ambition of all Commonwealth Citizens through Sport. The vision, mission and values of the Commonwealth Sports Movement hinge on three core values: Humanity, Equality, and Destiny.

By BVIOC

The two major storms which affected the territory in 2017 – Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria, caused severe damage to the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds which is the BVI’s main sporting facility. Particularly, the track surface was left in very poor shape in the wakes of these disasters.

The President of the BVI Olympic Committee, Mr. Ephraim Penn took the initiative to tap into various resources at the Olympic level to see how they could assist with facilitating the rebuilding and restarting of sports for the BVIOC members, particularly Track and Field.

To that end, Panam Sports President, Mr. Neven Ilic agreed to help affected countries including the BVI, to provide funding from Panam Sports to help repair the track surface. Panam Sports contracted two agencies which specialize in track surfaces, Mondo USA and Beynon Sports to assess the damage to the track surfaces at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.

Last week, both agencies visited the territory to conduct a full-scale assessment and were joined by BVIOC President, Mr. Ephraim Penn, Director of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Ministry of Education and Culture, Mrs. Brenda Lettsome-Tye, BVI Athletics Association’s President, Mr. Steve Augustine, members of the BVIOC Executive, members of the BVIAA Executive, Director of the Recreation Trust, Mr. Stephen Payne and personnel responsible for the maintenance of the A.O. Shirley Grounds.

The two agencies will submit reports to Panam Sports who will then consult with the BVIOC in awarding a contract to one of the agencies to repair the track surface.

Mr. Ephraim Penn was very pleased with the support of Panam Sports in starting the process of rebuilding sports in the territory.

CONCACAF sets dates for Member Association Licensing decisions

By BVI Football Association

Director of Football for CONCACAF, Mr Manolo Zubiria. Photo: Provided

The CONCACAF Chief of Football, Manolo Zubiria, has provided some insight as to the initiatives and processes that will be put into place to help professionalize football throughout the Member Associations.

In 2017, it became mandatory for all Member Associations (MAs) to formally implement Club Licensing at the domestic level. It also became a requirement for MAs to properly inspect clubs participating in regional tournaments (Caribbean Club Shield, Caribbean Club Championship, Scotiabank CONCACAF League and Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League) as to assure their compliance with the regional criteria. Therefore, Zubiria is encouraging all Associations to continue their excellent work in 2018, as Club Licensing is still in full effect and will be a key driver for the success of the professional football initiatives being put into place.

The deadline for every Member Association to communicate their Licensing Decisions for First and Second Division Clubs to CONCACAF at clublicensing@concacaf.org will be the following:

Tournament Communication Deadline:
2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF League 1-Jun-18
2019 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League 1-Jun-18
2019 Caribbean Club Championship 1-Jun-18
2019 Caribbean Club Shield 1-Jun-18

According to CONCACF, failure to communicate the Licensing Decisions by the stipulated dates may affect the eligibility of Clubs within the Association as it relates to these competitions. It is also important to note that if the license was granted to the Club as of the communication deadline, but the license is not valid at the time of the competition, it will be the responsibility of the Member Association to send an updated communication once licenses are renewed.

There is a plan in place for the Professional Football Development team at CONCACAF, alongside FIFA, to conduct Compliance and League Assessment Visits on all Member Associations that have clubs participating in upcoming regional competitions to assure that MAs and Clubs are on the right track to obtaining professional status and becoming eligible for our competitions.

Visits for participating Member Associations / Clubs for the 2018 Caribbean Club Shield will be January – March; March – April for the 2018 Caribbean Club Championship; May – June for the 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF League and August – December for the 2019 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.

The coordination of these visits will be communicated directly to the Associations Club Licensing Manager via CONCACAF’s Professional Football Development team.

Any questions or concerns re Club Licensing should, in the first instance, be directed to the FA General Secretary, via email gensec2@gmail.com

At the World Championships in London, McMaster failed to qualify after been disqualified but bounced back by beating a field of athletes which included World Champion Warholm of Norway at the Diamond League Meet in Zurich, Switzerland on August 24, 2017.

Third and fourth respectively in the world rankings are Yasmani Copello of Turkey and Olympic Champion Kerron Clement of USA.

“I want to be the best and to continue to train hard and represent my country to the best of my ability,” McMaster said.

Britney Reese of the USA is ranked number 1 in the world rankings.

Malone was truly excited learning about her world ranking, she said, “I was surprised but happy! With everything that happened last season, it was definitely an icing on the cake. It inspired me to continue moving forward and being the best athlete that I can be.”

The long jumper further stated that “this year my inspiration stemmed from losing Coach Samuels. I want my success to be a beacon of hope for the athletes of the BVI and let the world know that we are still a force to be reckoned with.”

Notably, Malone and McMaster are the only two Leeward Island athletes in the top IAAF World rankings.

BVIAA President Steve Augustine commented that “as a people and as the Athletics family, we are especially proud of Kyron and Chantel. What they have accomplished internationally is truly a testament to what hard work and determination can masterfully achieve. I trust that this will serve as an inspiration to the many super talented BVI athletes seeking to follow in their footsteps.

“Undoubtedly, I must also give credit to the many coaches that nurtured their athletic abilities during their youth, junior and senior years; Coach Dag Samuels and the Fast Lane coaching staff, Coach Winston Potter and the Top Notch coaching staff and Coach Loren Seagrave, who currently coaches Chantel. ”

Both Malone and McMaster are now focused towards the next major games, the Commonwealth Games with their eyes ultimately to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games.

Thad Lettsome, representing the BVI at the 47th Youth Sailing World Championships in Sanya, China has finished in 33rd position in the Laser Radial Class.  The Laser Radial is the largest class at the event and Lettsome faced stiff competition from 50 other competitors.

Lettsome rounded out the event with a 13th position, his best result of the championships.  “Winning the start in race 9 was amazing, I rounded the top mark in 3rd place and battled throughout the entire race with the regatta leaders,” he said.

With consistent results throughout the Championship, Lettsome was pleased with his performance.  “I have really enjoyed this event,” he told us.  “I have learned so much. The wind conditions have been tricky every day and the hardest part was definitely learning to adapt to shifty conditions.

“I feel that my downwind technique has really improved.  We have also worked a lot on windward mark approach theory and the process of putting together a winning program.

“I have made lots of new friends and we will have a really solid training group moving forwards.” added Lettsome.

The final overall position of 33rd, puts Lettsome as the top finisher in the class from the Caribbean islands. St Lucia’s Luc Chevrier was 34th, Malcolm Benn-Smith from Bermuda 35th, Tijn van der Gulik (AHO) was 38th, Mateo di Blasi (ISV) 46th and Jesse Jackson from the Cayman Islands finished 49th.

15 year old Lettsome was one of the youngest competitors in the fleet (the youngest by just a few months was friend and neighbour, Mateo di Blasi from the USVI) so his achievement is all the more impressive.

The top age at this event is 19 so many of these sailors already have a wealth of experience.  “Many of the sailors are university students!” commented Coach Watters,

“Thad puts a lot of pressure on himself in terms of results so we have worked a lot on the ‘big picture’,”  continued Watters. “Strategy, goals and the process are really important and I am really impressed with how much he has developed at this event.  He is still really young and all signs point to a really strong future in sailing.”

ENP Scholarship
Lettsome was selected by World Sailing earlier this year to receive a scholarship through their Emerging Nations Programme.(ENP) and traveled to China for a training camp a few days before the event started.  “It was very valuable coming early,” said Lettsome,

“It took us 20 hours to get here but it seemed like a lot longer, we skipped a whole day!  Getting the extra time in for training and getting used to the venue was really useful.  It has been great working with a group of sailors from all over the world, it really felt like we were a team.”

“I am very grateful to my school (Tabor Academy in Massachusetts) for allowing me to take the time off from classes.  The ENP team were brilliant and having my coach Chris (Watters) with me has been great, he has really helped me focus my goals.  I would also like to thank everyone in the BVI for their support, particularly the BVI Olympic Committee and the Royal BVI Yacht Club.”

About the event
Lettsome raced in the boys Laser Radial Class against 50 other competitors. 374 competitors from 60 nations raced across nine classes and with just one spot available to each country in each class, competition even to get selected is fierce.

The Youth Worlds is the pinnacle event in the youth racing calendar and, since the first event in 1971, a long list of sailing legends including Sir Ben Ainslie and Russell Coutts and numerous Olympic medallists have won medals at this event as they emerged onto the international stage.

Racing took place from Monday 11 to Friday 15 December in Sanya, China.
