The British Virgin Islands Football Association (BVIFA) Competitions Committee has formalized the Calendar for Spring/Summer 2016, with a series of Knockout Cup Tournaments, slated for both the A.O. Shirley Ground and the Virgin Gorda Recreation Ground.

The new season actually begins with the Men’s National team facing two games in the first round of the Scotiabank Caribbean Cup, firstly an away fixture against Martinique on the 22nd March and then a home tie with Dominica on March 26th at the A.O. Shirley Ground in Road Town.

Domestic football will then take centre stage with the Terry Evans Cup for Men and Women’s teams being staged from the 17th April and then a one day ”Nations Cup” , held on Virgin Gorda as part of the Whit Monday Holiday Celebrations.

The Wendoll Williams Cup will then be up for grabs with matches for Men and Women held on both Tortola and Virgin Gorda, starting on June 5th and with a Final scheduled for July 3rd.

According to Committee Chair, Aubrey Liburd, the spring and early summer will be a fiesta of Football for everyone. “As we look to build back up the sports profile ahead of being able to utilize the new venue in East End, it was important to plan a comprehensive season that will satisfy demand and the needs of our Member Clubs. Apart from the Knockout Cups, we are also supporting a Street Soccer imitative by Road Town Wholesale and will also be hosting a Beach Soccer Tournament as well as a CONCACAF Women’s Day Celebration in late May” he commented.

Mr. Liburd also reminded all Clubs that they must have paid up all BVIFA affiliation fees and submitted Rosters to be considered eligible to participate in what will be a fascinating new season.

“Teams have until close of business on Monday March 21st to become completely compliant with the FA’s Constitution and Rules” confirmed Liburd. “We have already extended the time frame, but now all teams must take note of the new deadline and submit their payment and relevant documents to the General Secretary of the FA”.

Any Club requiring further information on the requirements of compliance can also contact the FA Office on 494-5655.

The British Virgin Islands Football Association (BVIFA) President, Mr. Andy Bickerton, along with Mr. Avanell Morton, Assistant Secretary / Operations and Mr. Paul Hewlett, General Secretary, all returned to the Territory last week after the FIFA Elections happy with the result and excited by the future of Football.

Gianni Infantino was elected as the ninth President of the World Governing Body of Football after the second ballot with 115 of 207 total votes, holding off the challenge from Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa.

“We (the FA) supported Infantino in the second round because of declarations made by him in his manifesto and speech at the FIFA Congress,” ” commented Bickerton. “He stated that every member of FIFA should have a national stadium and that’s encouraging as well as his promise to look at increasing the development fund distributions, which would mean the FA could assist Virgin Gorda with improving the Festival ground in a similar way to what is happening at East End.”

Prince Ali Bin el Hussein had been the original first choice of the FA, but once it became apparent that he was struggling after the first round, the FA decided to go with Infantino.

“We intend to continue lobbying FIFA on other issues such as representation rules to play for the country and will also be making a case with the new Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) president when elected in May of this year to bring change to the current rules,” concluded Bickerton.

Morton hailed the election of Infantino as a breath of fresh air. “The BVI and the Caribbean will benefit from having Infantino as the new head of world football,” he stated. “After the result there was a breath of fresh air, relief , joy and happiness. It was a great decision for the entire football family.”

CONCACAF member associations also voted unanimously, during its annual congress held the day before the FIFA congress, to approve a comprehensive package of reforms, which were first outlined in the CONCACAF Reform Framework and later drafted by CONCACAF’s Statutes Reform Committee, at the Confederation’s XXII extraordinary congress. CONCACAF’s revised statutes will become effective immediately as the confederation and its member associations begin implementing the reforms.

The reforms to CONCACAF’s statutes fundamentally change the governance structure of football in the region and set new standards for accountability and transparency within international sports organizations. Once fully implemented, CONCACAF’s new structure will ensure that decisions regarding the confederation’s operations are made in the best interest of CONCACAF member associations, confirm that there is strong external oversight of the CONCACAF Council and General Secretariat, and affirm that CONCACAF’s resources are being utilized to achieve the confederation’s mission of developing and promoting football in the region.

A dramatic finale to a day of High School Basketball unfolded on Saturday March 5, 2016 inside the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex in Road Town, Tortola as the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) Rams entertained Charlotte Amalie High School of St Thomas, US Virgin Islands in the St Thomas-St John Inter Scholastic Sports Association Programme.

Jr Rams down Jr Hawks

First up in the four match programme was the Girls Junior Varsity encounter, which was won by the ESHS Rams, 26-11, led by 13 points, 6 steals and 4 blocks from Shauliqua Fahie.

Claury Scatliffe added 8 points and Mya Walwyn picked off 5 rebounds.

For the CAHS Hawks, T. Carty scored 4 points, K. Potter 6 rebounds and S. Dinzey 5 rebounds.

Jr Boys Hawks top Rams

The Junior Boys game went the way of the CAHS Hawks, 35-24, despite 10 points from Jomoi Levons and 8 points, 9 rebounds from K’ ntenay Maduro. Elroy Bollers added 4 points, whilst Antwan Robinson notched 5 rebounds.

For the CAHS Hawks, J. Gumbs scored 7 points, 4 steals, M. Williams and K. Callendar both scored 6, T. Martin 5 and M. Loius picked off 5 rebounds.

Jr Girls Hawks rout Jr ESHS Rams

The vastly more experienced CAHS Senior Girls then routed the shorthanded ESHS Rams, 44-18, keeping the host School scoreless until half way through the second quarter and holding a 24-8 half time advantage.

The third quarter saw more of the same as the pace of the Hawks began to take its toll on the Rams and the lead increased to a 25 point margin.

The Hawks got a 10 point, 5 steal performance from S. George, 9 from E. Aska, 8 from I. Gabriel and 6 from T. Southwell.

The Rams were led by 8 points each by Laresha Martin and M. Pickering, whilst Amber Penn grabbed 5 rebounds.

Senior ESHS Rams pipped by Hawks in thrilling affair

The real drama of the day unfolded in the final game between the Senior Boys teams, when a 4 point half team lead to the Hawks became a 2 point lead, 35-33, to the Rams at the end of the third period. With just over five minutes to play it was all square at 40-40 and then with four minutes remaining the Rams were up 46-43.

Into the last two minutes the Hawks snatched the lead at 47-46, but with a minute left the Rams leveled the game at 48-48, before conceding a visit to the paint for the Rams, who made it 50-48 with just 6 seconds remaining.

With last possession, Franklyn L. Penn Junior took on a long run to the opposition basket, but stumbled and lost the ball as the clock ran out to give the Hawks the victory.

D’moi M. Hodge finished with 23 points for the Rams, Penn Junior 7 with 4 rebounds, Lestin Wiltshire 10 with 4 rebounds and Devante Brewley 6 rebounds.

For the Hawks, J. Brodie top scored with 25 points, R. James 9, V. Toussaint 6 and D. Lynch 4.

Coach of the ESHS Senior Varsity Rams, Derwyn Scatliffe commented afterwards that his boys had done all he could have asked on the day “from a team that hasn’t been able to practice together too often and was tired after no doubt going to Spring Fest, I couldn’t have asked for much more.”

The Girls, Scatliffe hopes, will take a lot from the experience and realise that if they can get to the same level as the Hawks, then they could get a ticket to further education, like most of their counterparts have already secured and that would make the involvement, dedication and sacrifice from everybody all worthwhile.

Djimon Gumbs put the disappointment of fouling out the Discus Throw during the morning session behind, by unleashing a National Youth Record throw in the Shot Put, to close the BVI Athletics Association National Jr. Championships on Saturday, which was highlighted by several personal best performances.

The two day championships saw three national marks falling, with records coming in the High Jump and Javelin Throw.

Gumbs-who also took the Javelin Throw with a 42.02m effort-upped his own record mark from 15.58m earlier in the season to 16.33m on his first throw of the evening session in the U18 Boys event.

Soon to be 15-year old Beyonce DeFreitas, won the U18 Girls 200m with a personal best run of 24.42 seconds, lowering her previous best of 24.50 from last year when she was fifth in the Carifta Games. Her time broke Nelda Huggins’s 2012 U16 record.  She ran 25.00 in the prelims.

Judine Lacey became the ninth BVI female athlete running the 400m under 56.00 seconds, when she took the final in 55.92, improving on her 56.04 in Friday’s prelims. Anguilla’s Artesha Richardson established a national record of 56.74 seconds in placing second.

Ronique Todman bounced back from a narrow loss to St. Croix’s Rodney Griffiths in the 400m-48.63-48.85 seconds to turn back Griffiths in the 200m with a personal best effort of 21.88 seconds to his opponent’s 22.42.

Josh Hill shaved his U18 Boys 800m personal best from 2:02.98 to 2:02.52.

Tynelle Gumbs followed up teammate Kyron McMaster’s 400m victory, by shattering the National Jr. Colleges Athletics Association Indoor Championships Weight Throw record, leading all five of the territory’s athletes competing to top 10 finishes in their respective events.

The Mar 4-5 championships were held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Representing Central Arizona College and competing in the same event with twin sister Trevia who took the lead in the competition with her opening throw and personal best of 19.08m, Tynelle went to work in the second round where she seized the lead for good, with the first 20m throw of her career.

Tynelle’s 20.08 mark, demolished Barton County’s Ariel Brooks’ 19.55m championships mark that stood since 2004. She extended the mark to 20.28 in the third round but, still was not done. The sophomore had a throw of 19.82m in the fifth round before unleashing a 20.91m Jr. College record on her final attempt.

With her sister finishing third and Trinidad and Tobago Portious Warren placing fourth, Central Arizona picked up 21 points in the event and finished fourth in the final team standings with 85½ points.

“I enjoyed competing with everyone and I never let my guard down, because I knew that anyone could pop a big throw at anytime,” Tynelle said. “I’ve been trying to get the record since the beginning of the season but, it wasn’t coming together. I think the key to my success was just being relaxed and my technique coming together at the right place.”

She said the 20.91m throw came as a surprise. “It was close to 21,” she noted. “When I saw the throw land I started crying because I knew it was big. I was very happy.”

Tynelle said when Trevia opened with 19.08 to take the lead, she was excited for her as it increased her personal best from 18.28m. “The main aim was just to keep her relaxed so she could have a bigger throw,” she said.

While Tynelle and Trevia were in action, McMaster won the 400m in 47.95 seconds. The freshman ran 48.59 to win his heat with the second fastest time of the prelims. He anchored the 4x400m Relay to a fifth place finish in 3:16.97, helping Central Arizona to place third with 72 points.

Plagued by foul troubles, Eldred Henry who had the top billing in the Shot Put heading into the competition, had to settle for fifth place with a throw of 16.90m after fouling four of his six attempts. He also fouled his last four attempts and wound up ninth in the Weight Throw with a 17.00m mark.

South Plains College freshman Taylor Hill, was eight in the 60m dash in 7.68 seconds. She advanced to the final after running 7.62. She was second in her 200m heat in 25.41 seconds but did not advance to the final.

At World’s Last Chance meet in New York, Tahesia Harrigan-Scott won the 60m dash in a season’s best of 7.20 seconds, followed by Karene King in 7.53. Harrigan-Scott ran 7.33 in the prelims and King, 7.58.

Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses ran the third best 400m in or outdoors when she placed second in 53.76 seconds.

Several Under 18 Girls kicked off Session I of the BVI Athletics Association National Jr. Championships last night with record performances, highlighted by High Jumper Z’Niah Hutchinson and Javelin Thrower Arianna Hayde.

The competition included five St. Croix athletes and two from Anguilla.

Soon to be 15-year old Hutchinson equaled the National High Jump Record of 1.65m, first established by Virgin Gorda’s Tkola Creque in 1994 and matched by Chantel Malone in 2008, when she cleared the height on her second attempt.

Hutchinson who entered the competition with a best of 1.61m got over the bar at 1.68m, but was still on the High Jump bed when the bar fell off and was not credited with the outright record.

In the same event, Malone’s sister Xiomara, soon to be 14, finished second in a personal best of 1.60m, improving on her previous mark of 1.56. It’s the fifth best performance by a BVI athlete behind Creque, Malone, Hutchinson and Pat Archibald.

In the Javelin Throw, Arianna Hayde eclipsed Tynelle Gumbs’ 2012 mark of 41.46m with a heave of 41.47m, becoming the second U18 Girl to over 40m.

The semifinals of the U18 Girls 400m, saw Judine Lacey running a lifetime best of 56.04 seconds, behind U20 Girls Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner’s personal best of 55.88. Lacey cut her previous mark from 57.65 for the #9 mark All Time while Warner is now #8, lowering her three year old mark from 56.49.

Ronique Todman edged St. Croix’s Rodney Griffith in the U20 Boys 400m prelims, getting to the line in 48.89 seconds to Griffin’s 48.92. Under 18 boy Rakeel Jack dipped under 50 seconds for the first time, placing second in 49.50 seconds behind Tarique Moses’ 49.24.

Todman returned to win the U20 Boys 100m in 10.99 seconds.
