Sixteen boats took part in the 47th annual Peg Legs Round Tortola Race on Saturday (December 10) with trimaran Triple Jack taking line honours but Boomorang skippered by Kevin Wrigley taking the overall prize on corrected time for the second consecutive year.

Chris Haycraft’s Pipe Dream, after battling it boat for boat with Boomorang, was second and Spike skippered by Sam Talbot was a third. Racing class results also went in that order.

Triple Jack won the multihull division with contender Fault Intolerant, a Gunboat 60, retiring due to gear failure.

David Lake and his crew on Wicked Winch took cruising class and Keith LiGreci’s Girasoli, the performance cruising class.

The last three boats back – Gypsea, Wildfire and Sapphire Breeze – all came in within 20 mins of each other as the sun was setting with the last, Sapphire Breeze, racing for more than 8 hours. Triple Jack took 3 hours and 44 minutes.

A course change for 2016 race gave competitors more tactical decisions; the course still took the racers anti-clockwise around Tortola but gave them the option to sail between Scrub, Great Camano and Guana Islands and Tortola or head further out to sailing outside them all. However, with the inner route taking 7 miles taken off the course, everyone went that way, thoroughly enjoying the change and the challenge of navigating through some tricky reef formations and an energetic current.

Then, as in previous races, the fleet headed to West End where, after a quick wiggle through Soper’s Hole, it was a beat back to the finish line off Nanny Cay.

The prize giving was held at the Beach Bar at Nanny Cay where a haul-out and launch and the Round Tortola trophy were awarded to the overall winner and vouchers from Peg Legs and Nanny Cay were dispensed to the class winners. Competitors also picked up valuable points towards the Pussers Painkiller Series.

SPOOKIE’s round Tortola record of 3 hours and 8 minutes was under no threat this year. Only boats rounding Great Camanoe and Guana Island to port were eligible for the Nanny Cay Challenge.

Nanny Cay Challenge
TP52 SPOOKIE broke the Monohull Nanny Cay Challenge record in the Round Tortola Race at this year’s BVI Spring Regatta. An elapsed time of 3:08:43, took a whopping 21 minutes off the previous record of 03:29:44, set in March 2013 by Peter Corr’s Aiyana, an Alia 82.

Trimaran Triple Jack holds the outright and multihull Round Tortola Record of 2 hours, 33 minutes and 40 seconds.

Nanny Cay launched the Nanny Cay Challenge for the round Tortola record in 2010. Yachts visiting the British Virgin Islands are invited to make an attempt to beat the latest round Tortola records.

It’s an all-comer, any-day event, starting and finishing off Nanny Cay. Competitors must attempt the record anti-clockwise and round Beef, Scrub Island, Great Camanoe and Guana Island to port.

As with most sailing events, the reward is in the taking part and bragging rights but record breakers will be able to celebrate their feat with a free dinner at Peg Legs for up to 15 crew members and a jeroboam of champagne compliments of Nanny Cay. Record breakers also get their name on the perpetual trophy which is on display year-round in Peg Legs Restaurant.
Challengers must pay an entry fee of a $250 which is donated to a BVI charity of the challenger’s choice and includes two night’s dockage (before and after attempt) at Nanny Cay.

Bregado Flax took a share of top spot in the BDO U12 Primary School League with a 2-0 win over Pelican Gate.

Jaden Abrams converted a first half penalty, whilst Jamoi Hodge put the icing on the cake with a late second half strike.

St Georges continued a recent run of good form with a 3-1 win over Althea Scatliffe, thanks to a first half brace from Jefferson Frank. Adrian Padilla made it 3-0 towards the end of the second half, before Jeremiah Hopkins scored a late consolation for ASPS.

Cedar Green and Alexandrina Maduro Primary remain unbeaten in the standings to be first and second, respectively on goal difference, from BFEC, whilst ASPS are fourth.

In the U14 High School League, Cedar School leapfrogged over BFEC, with a 2-0 win, into second place in the standings, but still five points behind unbeaten leaders, ESHS.

Cedar’s game against BFEC was called off after an injury to the goalkeeper reduced the boys from VG to just six players on the field.

The goals coming from Scott Kirk and Luca Reich

In the High School Girls league, Cedar went top, on goal difference, from BFEC, with an 8-1 romp over the SDA Girls.

Hat tricks from Darci Reich and Lilly Pierce along with a goal each for Tola Broderick and Caron Simmons sealed the deal for Cedar, although SDA had been level at 1-1 after a strike from Daveon Topper.

BFEC maintained the pace in the race for the Championship with a hard fought 4-2 win over St Georges Girls, despite being a goal down, scored by Kiara Woodley, for much of the first half.

Jakisha Rigobert netted the equalizer and Kayla Skelton the go-ahead goal on the stroke of half time, before Loreal George scored twice in the second half to secure all 3 points.

Most Competitive BVI Sunrise Half Marathon Ends With Record Run

It wasn’t the fastest, but definitely the most competitive race in the the 11-year history of the Deloitte-Ogier BVI Sunrise Half Marathon, that ended with St. Thomas’ Ruth Ann David improving her own course record on Saturday.

The men’s pace was set by Grenada’s Renon Radix, Antigua and Barbuda’s Kalique St. Jean and the USVI’s Shane DeGannes, a 3-peat champion who was second last year, battling over the first 10½ miles, before DeGannes was dropped. Radix and St. Jean dueled for anther mile before Radix went clear for the victory.

“I thought the head pack set a decent pace early in the race so it was good going and to the end. I had to work a bit but it was wonderful,” Radix said. “I didn’t know the route so I had to bait someone who did and the Antiguan and I basically stayed with Shane for a while. I knew once you go out and turn, then I would have memorized and mapped the route, because coming back was about six miles. I knew the course then, so it was a bit of waiting, then start injecting a bit of pace and see what they had. It was a cat and mouse game for the last five miles.”

After dropping DeGannes, Radix said he knew St. Jean is a 5000m runner and the last three miles would be a battle. “I don’t know what happened but in the last mile, he just backed off and I took the opportunity to go ahead hard to the finish,” he said after running 1 hour 20 minutes and 57 seconds. “It’s the first time I’ve won a race out of my country so I could care less about time. I’m just happy that I won.”

St. Jean said on the return, the wind was beating in his face and he was trying to stay with the pack, execute a good race and finish strong. “My hamstring started to hurt a bit and I slowed because the pace was hot, hot,” he said after running 1:21.24. “But, I’m happy with my time. It’s a personal best.”

DeGannes said it was a fast race and was glad Radix and St. Jean came. “We ran about a six minute pace going out, those guys made me do all the work, then dropped like a 5:45 around mile 7, 8, and it started rocking,” he said noting he didn’t have Gatorade. “It stared getting faster at mile 10, that’s when those guys started taking off and I just dropped off. Tried my best, but, I couldn’t hang on.”

Julius Farley passed the BVI’s top runner Reuben Stoby and placed fourth. “I didn’t want the girls beating me today – that was my motivation,” he said. “I saw the times they ran which was pretty impressive so I went out and tried my best. I’m surprised and thankful, because Reuben has been beating me all year. After I seized the advantage, I just kept pushing on.”

Stoby who was with the pack for the first two miles, faded to fifth and held off David by .01 at the line. “I’m disappointed and I wasn’t able to keep up after the first two miles – maybe the many races this year took its toll because I ran three minutes off what I ran last year,” he said. “I was at least expecting a personal best if not a victory. So I’m disappointed.”

In the women’s race, St. Thomas’ David and Grenada’s Kinesha Pascal engaged in a duel before the defending champ pulled away to finish sixth overall.

“I wasn’t sure I was going to get here because I had no money,” said an emotional David who crossed the line in 1 hour 30 minutes and 21 seconds to break her course record of 1:30.46 and collected $750 including $250 for taking the record, after an early battle with Grenada’s Kinesha Pascal. “I want people to understand how true and how God will be there for you if you just trust in Him. Don’t trust in people to be there for you, trust in Him to see a way and He’ll always make a way.”

David praised Pascal for helping her performance. “If she wasn’t here, I think it would have been harder for me to keep my pace in the beginning – she helped me to set a good pace,” David noted. “We are running together for about five or six miles and Reuben Stoby too, he also helped.”

Pascal was happy with her 1:32.37 personal best effort. “It’s a great improvement from the 1:37.25 I did at home two weeks ago,” she said, which also improved her 1:34.40 best. “It was the second time I’m running with Ruth and the first over a half marathon. I guess she had a better advantage because she knows the route and it’s my first time, but, I’m happy with my performance.”

Mid table action in the Men’s National League kicked it up a notch over the weekend of December 3rd and 4th, with the Panthers recording their first win of the season and Old Madrid and the Wolues both beaten.

On Saturday, the Rebels had leapfrogged over the Sugar Boyz to go second in the standings, albeit short lived, with a 3-0 win over VG United.

As in their previous game VG Utd were good value for a 0-0 score line at half time, but became undone in the second half with a goal from Atebe Creese (48th min) and two goals from Elijah Toulan (57th and 66th min).

The Panthers then recorded their first win of the season and handed Old Madrid a second successive defeat, 2-0, to put further doubt on a place in the top four.

The goals came from Garnet Ferron and Jaleel Rodriquez.

The Wolues, who, had Old Madrid beaten the Panthers, would have been replaced in the top four, did little to help their own cause with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Sugar Boyz, courtesy of Deron Daniel (43rd min), Michael Castillo (49th min) and Allon Williams (52nd).

As the BVIFA National League continued over the weekend, One Love dented Old Madrid’s top four aspirations with a comfortable 3-0 win, the Islanders stayed unbeaten and the Rebels closed in on second place in the standings.

All the One Love goals all came in the second half with Richard Morgan’s opener in the 63rd minute followed by Trevor Ellis, who made it 2-0 in the 75th minute and Uriah Junior Baptiste who rounded out the scoring in the 87th, to make it 3-0.

The Islanders stayed top of the standings of course, still unbeaten, with the latest victims, the Wolues, handed a 5-1 defeat. Youngster, Joshua Lynch netted twice in the second half to put the icing on the cake after Rohan Lennon and Kevin Fisher had made it 2-0 at half time.

Kevin Carragher pulled one back for the Wolues, but Fisher added his second to make it 3-1 before Lynch finished off the job.

The Sugar Boyz and VG United were scheduled to play their local derby over on VG, but the only reports so far are that both teams failed to show up for the National League fixture and apparently opted to let their players play in the VG Community League instead.

The Rebels then closed the gap on second place in the league with a 4-1 win over the Panthers, courtesy of goals from Carlos Septus, Kevaugn Watson, Elijah Toulon and Atebe Creese, whilst Andrew Morrison netted for Panthers.

The Ballstarz Women lifted the BVIFA Nine a Side Championship with a thrilling 6-2 victory over VG United on Saturday 26th November, on the A.O. Shirley Ground,

Playing with discipline and quick ball movement the Ballstarz raced into a 2-0 lead, when first MVP, Philia James reacted first to a lose ball in the penalty box and then Morgan Creque doubled the advantage in just the 17th minute.

James scored her second and the Ballstarz third before half time with a powerful volley from the edge of the box.

VG regrouped at the break and hit back with two goals from Kezia Gumbs, but were cut off in their comeback by an own goal and then being caught out on fast breaks, pushing forward in search of more goals, first by a wonderful Murcella Gordon free kick and then by Lilly Pierce, which saw the final score 6-2.

“VG is technically the most improved team this year, they are full of youngsters, but we came with a game plan and stuck to it,” commented Coach Maurice Mark. “I told the girls at half time to stay composed because VG would come at them strong in the second half.”

Having Murcella Gordon back in action was a major factor in the Ballstarz victory as she slowed play down and spread passes wide, giving Mark a much-needed calm influence in midfield.

Pierce was a constant threat down the left and right flanks, but VG, showed by a strong second half performance, that they will be better for the experience and be back even stronger in 2017.

At the awards presentation, not only did the BVIFA’s Women Committee present Ms. Gloria Fahie, President of the BVI Cancer Society a cheque for $1,000, but they also honored Brittney Peters as the Golden Boot winner, Kimberley Howell as Golden Glove, James as MVP,  and presented VG Utd with the Presidents “CAPS” Award, an Annual Fairplay Trophy.

The Avengers finished in third place and the Ballstarz avowed to donate $500 of their $1500 winner’s check to the Cancer Society.
