Confidence is high among the girls national under-17 team who arrived in Nevis this morning, August 20 for the Caribbean Football Union / FIFA World Cup Qualifiers which take place August 22-26.

“I think if every teammate on my team contributes and puts effort and strength that we will do well in this under-17 tournament,” said team captain Jackisha ‘JJ’ Rigobert at a media conference yesterday, August 19.

The BVI is grouped with strong teams such as St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Dominica. On Friday, the BVI will clash with St. Kitts at 8 p.m. with subsequent matches on Monday and Wednesday against Trinidad and Dominica respectively.

According to the BVI Football Association, the team is largely made up of players who were part of the 20-member squad that represented the BVI in the Cayman Islands last year.

“I believe in my team; I have faith in my team. Since from last year in Cayman Islands I saw the potential and effort from each and everyone of my team mates and I know this year we do good in this tournament no matter how tough the opponents may be. I know for sure we will do well,” said Rigobert.

The team includes Kaylah Skelton, Gabby Dawson, Lilly Pierce, Emily Lowrey, Abbie Heywood, Katie Lowrey, Morgan Creque, Tia Modeste, Olivia Messum, Shevonne Vanterpool, D’Avian Williams, Sheniece St John, Bethany Howarth, Akira Phillips.

BVIFA President Andy Bickerton said that he is pleased with the way the team has progressed and expects continued improvement.

“We are not going into these tournaments thinking that we are going in to walk away and win them because we are obviously playing strong countries. What is important is that we participate well and we are serious about our preparation and our players boys or girls use the opportunity to gain the experience and help us build the future,” said Bickerton.

Coach Kate Rowson said that the there are a few girls from the Cayman squad that can’t travel, but two girls were added, one who was part of the under-20 squad a few years ago.

“It was big learning curve last year. It was the biggest stage the girls have every played on in terms of playing in front a thousand people in the first game at night under floodlights which a lot of them had not done so straight away we are in a better position straight away,” said Coach Rowson.

Noting that preparations were hampered last year due to the lack of facilities, Rowson noted that this year there were faced with similar challenges, but the team has used it as an advantage.

“Not having the 11-a-side field to practice on; we have taken that slight disadvantage and used it to you advantage….we have been practicing on a smaller field which has made it nice and compact which means the girls has had the opportunity to practice with having very little time on the ball which has put them under pressure to make sure they have a good first touch and they play the ball early,” Rowson stated.

The opening night of the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League on August 15, 2015 witnessed a full house of fans at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff’s Bottom.

Not only were they not disappointed with the two exciting opening games but they were showered with words of appreciation for their committed support to basketball in the Virgin Islands by founder of the League, Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3).

Hon Fraser congratulated the fans, especially the loyal fans who he said come out every game night to support the players.

The League founder also said the tournament and facility offer a wonderful opportunity for families to come out and spend time together.

Recalling hearing the vision of Bishop John I. Cline for the Save the Seed Energy Centre a few years ago, Hon Fraser said he thought he should do everything possible to help make that vision come through and thus the collaboration between the two for the now growing League.

He also said he hopes this year’s League will be better than last year’s.

Meanwhile, appreciation was also extended to the League Committee headed by Chairman Mr Julian Willock and which includes Commissioner Rajah A. Smith and Assistant Commissioner Byron J. Hodge.

Hon Fraser also recognised the work of former Assistant Commissioner Mr Milton C. McLean.

He described the current League Committee as a talented and experienced one, especially now with the inclusion of Mr Hodge.

The other members of the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League Committee are: Gloria A. Mactavious, Secretary; Patricia Daway, Facilities Manager; David A. Abednego, Legal Counsel; Jacqueline Williams-Nathaniel, Treasurer; Walter D. Barrett, Security Coordinator and Sharlene S. David, Member.

The opening ceremony was highlighted with the presentation of the Digicel-sponsored championship rings to 2014 champions Bayside Blazers and the awarding of trophies to several junior and senior players as well as coaches.

Then there was the roll call of teams for the 2015 League where fans were able to see who are the faces for the various sides.

Meanwhile, West Gunners and New Heights started their campaign in the Hon Julian Fraser Save the Seed League with convincing wins when play continued at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff’s Bottom on Sunday August 16, 2015.

West Gunners, through a game high 30 points from Dmor Hodge and a heroic defensive display from Ray Victor, defeated Warrias 108-58.

In the second game of the evening, New Heights overcame Pure Playaz 98-72 despite a game high 32 from Ruben Reyes of Pure Playaz.

Leading the way for New Heights were D. Richardson (21 points), K. Young (19 points) and Dean Smith (19 points)

The 2015 League is thus far sponsored by Digicel (BVI), Nagico Insurances, Nanny Cay Hotel and Marina, First Caribbean International Bank, BVI Olympic Committee, National Bank of the Virgin Islands and Caribbean Insurances Ltd.

The BVI Softball Association will crown a new men’s Fast Pitch League champion as the Pirates ended the season-long struggle for 2014 champions, Power Outage shortly before 1:30 am at the Softball Field in Road Town this morning, August 15.

Trailing 2-0 in the best of five playoff series and in need of a win to stay alive, Power Outage surged to an early 6-0 lead after two innings. Four runs were scored on 3 hits in the first inning and in the second inning Jeremy ‘Chicken’ Penn struck a two-run home run blast over the center field wall.

Playing without Neville ‘Sheep’ Smith who retired from the sport after last year’s title run, Power Outage relied on Joseph Smith Sr who bothered the Pirates early. On the opposite side of the field, Pirates stuck with starting pitcher Nikos Penn in spite of the early runs scored by Power Outage.

By the bottom of the third inning, the Pirates had seen enough of Smith, scoring their first run and in the fourth inning 3 more runs crossed home plate all before the first out was recorded.

Power Outage held a 6-4 edge and the Pirates were surging when umpire Glenford ‘Chappy’ Maduro halted play due to rain at the end of four innings of play. When play resumed, Nikos Penn held Power Outage to their third consecutive scoreless inning buying enough time for his hitters to take command.

Right on cue after the rain delay in the bottom of the fifth, there was no shelter from the onslaught that saw Pirates pile on 8 runs from 5 hits against Smith to wrestle the lead away, 12-6.

The inning was headlined by a three-run homer from Al Leonard.

Power Outage narrowly escaped the inning as the 9th run in the inning would have invoked the mercy rule and the game would have ended. The defending champs were not going away without a fight and scored 5 runs at the top of the 6th inning to put the score 12-11 and two runs away from taking the lead.

Pirates were held scoreless in the 6th inning to set up an intriguing 7th and final inning.

At the top of the 7th, Pirates went to their ace pitcher, Allen “Woodrow” Smith who delivered the crucial save, stranding the run to tie the game at third base and securing victory 12-11.

Leonard from the Pirates were 3 for 3, scored twice and drove in 4 runs while Rhodni Skelton was 3 for 4, 1 runs scored and 4 runs batted in.

For Power Outage, Jeremy Penn was 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 4 runs batted in while Khoy ‘The Mailman’ Frett was 3 for 3, 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.

Pirates will await the winner of the playoff series between Reds and Republica Dominicana whose game will be played on Wednesday, August 19 at 7:00 pm.

BVI’s squash player, Joe Chapman has reached the quarter finals of the Colony Ford Lincoln NSA Open, PSA M5 event in Toronto, Canada with a superb straight games victory over qualifier, James Bamber of England.

Chapman, who is number 5 seed in the tournament, needed 29 minutes for his 11-7, 11-4, 11-3 victory over Bamber. Chapman now faces number 2 seed, Arthur Gaskin of Ireland in the quarter-finals.

The biggest shock of the tournament so far, however, was Mexico’s qualifier, Jesus Camacho completing a huge upset in the first straight games victory over number 3 seed Dane Sharp.

The first game was the closest of the lot when Camacho, who reached the final of the British Virgin Islands Open Squash Championship at his last PSAWorld Tour appearance, narrowly emerged with a victory from the opening game courtesy of a tense tie-break. Despite playing on home soil, Sharp failed to live with Camacho’s exuberance around court and the Mexican No.5 finished off a 13-11, 11-8, 11-8 triumph in style to move on through to the quarter-final.

He will meet another Canadian there in David Baillargeon after the World No.199 recorded an impressive victory over compatriot Fred Reid while top seed Chris Hanson dispatched wildcard, Cameron Seth in three games.

Ireland’s Arhur Gaskin is also through to the next round after he claimed a confident victory against Albert Shoihet. Gaskin struggled to pull away in the second game in particular and he narrowly edged out a tight 15-13 win but that victory, sandwiched by triumphs in the first and third games, means that he moves on to the last eight with Joe Chapman.

Shahjahan Khan will meet Babatunde Ajagbe in the quarter-final after respective wins over Nicolas Caballero and Kale Wilson with a semi-final tie against Hanson or Michael McCue, who saw off Rahul Sehrawat, awaiting the victor.

The Pythons became the 2015 Fast Pitch Women’s Softball Champions after defeating the Hawks 11-10 last night, Tuesday August 11, 2015 to complete a three nil clean sweep.

The game was all Pythons until the Hawks, with their backs to the wall at 8-0 down and starting the 5th inning, mounted a stirring comeback to rattle and almost roll the Pythons.

Perline Scatliffe led off the inning and recorded only the Hawks second hit of the night, to centre field. Riiah Durante failed to get on base, Ericka Frederick singled as Deja Adams, running for Scatliffe, was out at third on a lightening throw from Jelissa Potter.

J’heane Niles singled, Diana Hunte doubled on a fielding error, and Frederick came home to open the Hawks account.

Niles also made it home before Javelyn Frett tripled to deep centre field, eventually to bring Karema Brown, Hunte and herself home to make it 8-5. Kia Doward also scored to make it 8-6.

The Pythons failed to score at the bottom of the 5th and then faced a rejuvenated Hawks in the 6th as after two quick outs, Frett singled to allow Hunte to score.

At the bottom of the inning, Darier Malone took a full count before driving in Sheniqua Fahie to make it 9-7. Jelissa Potter hit to deep centre scoring Malone to make it 10-7 and Valissia Brathwaite then singled to score Potter, making it 11-7 and the Pythons were seemingly safe having weathered the comeback.

However, in the 7th inning, Doward came home on some wild Pythons fielding to make it 11-8. Frederick then doubled, allowing Brown home (11-9) and then Niles singled to left field scoring Durante, making it 11-10.

Unfortunately for the Hawks it was as close as it got as Fahie, in relief of Brathwaite, picked up the final two outs in quick succession.

Afterwards, coach Terry Chinnery was shaken if not stirred, but did admit he hadn’t had to say so much to his team in this year’s league. “I had to take a time out and go on the field as I couldn’t believe what I was seeing from them in the 6th and 7th inning. I used some choice words and thankfully, although it was still stressful, they regained their composure and saw out the game for the win.”

The Pythons had 7 hits, made 4 errors, while the Hawks had 10 hits, and made 8 errors.

The winning pitcher was Brathwaite who got some late relief from Fahie and the loser Durante.

Potter went 4 for 4, scored four runs, had 4 RBI and notched two doubles and two triples while Chevaughn Richardson went two for four, with 2 RBI.

“I am used to winning with this team, so losing would be more emotional. I’m comfortable in this winning spot. Richardson really impressed me tonight, when we needed it most she delivered and I’m pleased for her,” commented Potter.

For the Hawks, Niles went two for four with one run and one RBI.

Frett went two for four, with one run and 3 RBI.

Action resumes on Friday August 14, 2015 in the Men’s Play Off’s when at 7:00pm, the Republica Dominicana take on the Reds, followed by Power Outage against the Pirates.

Long Jumper Chantel Malone of the British Virgin Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands’ Eddie Lovett, won silver and bronze medals respectively, in the 2nd North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Track and Field Championships that wrapped up in San Jose, Costa Rica, last night.

Malone cut the sand with a personal best leap of 6.69m on her opening jump to secure the silver medal behind the USA’s Quansheka Burks, who opened with the same 6.69 mark as Malone, then leapt 6.93m, the ninth best jump in the world this year to secure the gold medal. Malone’s mark was .01cm off qualifying for the IAAF World Championships and improved her 6.65 National Record. The USVI’s Wanetta Kirby placed eight after hitting 5.90 on her last attempt, the same position she finished in the High Jump, competing both simultaneously.

“It’s always good to accomplish something you have been dreaming about,” Malone said. “I wanted the gold and I definitely wanted a qualifier, but, I’m very pleased with my performance today.”

Malone, who hadn’t been jumping well until the Pan Am Games, said the mindset she had when she won the CAC Games gold in November, returned. “I’m happy that it did,” she stated. “For example, in the Pan Am Games, I had two fouls going in to the last jump before the final and normally, I would have freaked out. But, in my mind, I said it only takes one jump to get into the final. I kept positive and that’s what I did today too.”

Lovett broke his USVI 110m national record in the process of claiming a bronze medal despite a bad landing off the 10th hurdle, finishing in 13.31 seconds to lower his 2-year old best of 13.39, narrowly missing the silver medal by .01, taken by Cuba’s Jhoanis Portilla in 13.30.

“The race felt great, the only thing I wish I would have done better, which I believe cost me a second or first place medal, was coming off the last hurdle,” Lovett explained, noting he’s seeing difference from using a seven step approach to the first barrier. “I’m able to use my speed, but the end of the race is something I’ve been trying to fix, since the beginning of my career. The more I push the envelope, the more I’ll be able to stand tall and finish with the rest of them.”

Lovett dedicated the race to his sister who was killed last month and his father and said he felt them in the race. “They pushed me to be able to do what I had to do today and I hope I made them proud,” he said. “I know I have the support of my agent, the Virgin Islands community, my family, everybody involved and I thank everybody for their prayers.”

The BVI’s Tahesia Harrigan-Scott just missed the 100m podium by .06 seconds when she placed fourth in 11.28 seconds. USVI’s Laverne Jones-Ferrette was seventh in 11.53.

“I felt really good and I think I ran a really good race unfortunately, I didn’t end up on the medal podium, but that’s life, so now my focus turns to Worlds,” Harrigan-Scott said. “I loved my start and I loved my transition, my ending, I felt it was still good in my opinion. There are some things I need to work on in the last 10 meters, but I’ll fix it.”

Jones said besides not getting a good start in the 100m, she thought she executed well, then had a season’s best of 23.51 seconds in the 200m on Sunday. “I’m glad to come out healthy,” she said. “It wasn’t a doubt that I would have made the 200 final. I’m in shape, but it’s mostly race sharpness I needed.”

USVI Long Jumper Leon Hunt was seventh with a leap of 7.48m while teammate Muhammid Halim was next with 7.36.

“I had two legal jumps in the prelims and no legal jumps in the finals and all the good jumps happened in the finals,” Hunt said. “I have to work on that. The same thing has been happening the whole season.”

Eldred Henry of the BVI was fifth in the Shot Put with a heave of 18.49m on Sunday.

The event, which took place in Cape Cod from August 2 -6, 2015, was hosted by the Wianno Yacht Club, Osterville, Massachusetts.

Approximately 100 of the U.S.A.’s top youth sailors competed for the renowned Smythe Trophy, Bemis Trophy, and Sears Cup in single handed, double handed, and quadruple handed competition.

The battle for the Smythe Trophy came down to the wire, as leader Sam Morrell (Redhook, USVI) tried to hold on to his one-point lead over Joseph Hou (Newport Beach, Calif.).

“I tried to match race him today to the bottom half of the fleet,” explained Morrell. “On the downwind he passed me and other boats, but he finished sixth and couldn’t place worse than fifth in order to pass me for the lead in the standings.”

Morrell went on to win the championship by just two points. He finished strong on Wednesday with three consecutive wins.

Hou dashed out to an early lead in this fleet on Monday by winning the first four races of the championship.

Morrell, who placed third last year, said “I trained really hard this year. The conditions were better for me here. Everything started to break my way, especially at the end of the regatta. The first half of the regatta I was trying to re-learn the Byte. I’m really stoked to win and Joe is such a good sailor.”
