Team BVI Leaves Aruba With CARIFTA Gold!

BVI Swimming Federation

DSC_0862Team BVI swum itself into the territory’s record books after capturing gold at the XXIV CARIFTA Swimming Championships recently concluded in Aruba. Thirteen year-old Elinah Philip collected medals in each of her four events and set a CARIFTA record in the 50m Butterfly where she earned her gold medal with a time of 28.71.

Elinah’s medal haul also included a silver in the 50m Freestyle and a bronze each in the 100m Butterfly and the 100m Freestyle. Both of her 50m swims came in under old records. Sister, Amarah, in the meantime, powered her way to personal bests in the 50m Freestyle and the 100m Freestyle.

“CARIFTA was a great experience,” said Elinah after her races. “I swam well and made personal bests in all my races. I didn’t really know what to expect, but it still turned out extremely well.” The young swimmer is now looking toward the future. “I plan to swim even faster than the times I swam this week and achieve my goals for the Commonwealth Games,” she said. Elinah is England’s second fastest 2000 born girl in the 50m Freestyle and the third fastest in the 50m Butterfly.

The CARIFTA Championships are an annual age group meet for the Caribbean, similar in form and origin to its athletics counterpart. This year’s event was sanctioned by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) as a Youth Olympic Games (YOG) qualifier and attracted the best in the region for a very high level of competition. The Championships also served as a Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games qualifying event.

Team BVI came away with the drive and determination to achieve even more and used this competition as an indicator of greater things to come according to BVI Swimming Federation officials. “We are very pleased with their performances,” said Tracy Bradshaw, the girls’ mother and the Federation’s Secretary General. “The championships were a magnificent experience for both girls. Amarah just got into the 15-17 age group and captured a couple of personal bests this outing. She’ll have another few years to move through and improve on her performances and we are excited about her future in swimming. Elinah had an exceptional Championships which has definitely boosted her confidence as a competitor.”

At last year’s OECS Swimming Championships in St. Lucia, Elinah captured 10 medals and the OECS high point award in the girls 11-12 age group while establishing five new OECS records in the Girls 11-12 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, and 200m Individual Medley. Amarah won six medals in the 13-14 age group and copped the 3rd place high point award in that age group.

“Their times at CARIFTA were even better than at last year’s meet in St. Lucia demonstrating that they are both learning and improving but they still have much more to learn as they are fairly new to the sport,” said Ms. Bradshaw.

Speaking about her races, fifteen year-old Amarah said that “CARIFTA 2014 was a huge learning experience for me and showed me where and what I need to improve in all of my events.” She added that she hopes to “attain many personal bests in future competitions leading up to the Commonwealth Games and the Youth Olympic Games.”

Elinah and her sister, Amarah, were the BVI’s sole qualifiers at this year’s CARIFTA Championships which featured 23 countries and territories from around the Caribbean region.

“In order to race at this level you have to race often and this is something the BVI Swimming Federation will continue to pursue for our swimmers despite our local challenges,” said the girls’ father, Elsworth Philip, National Coach and President of the Swimming Federation. “We want more of the territory’s swimmers to achieve the CARIFTA experience because it takes a lot of work to get here. We are definitely looking at fielding a larger team in the future.”

The Philips sisters are expected to compete at the XX Commonwealth Games, 23rd July – 3rd  August in Glasgow, Scotland. Both girls train in Hertfordshire, England.

Richard Morgan and Sue Tucker new national champions

10253876_635161243239738_7300764820443762143_nIn the BVI Triathlon’s National Sprint Champs held on Saturday, Richard Morgan, 2012 national champion, regained his men’s title. Sue Tucker became the Ladies champion, setting a new course record, which was also broken by the second and third place ladies too.

Morgan clocked a time of 1 hour, 16 minutes and 16 seconds, taking the title from last year’s winner Russel Crumpler. Crumpler didn’t defend his title but Morgan’s time was just under three and half minutes faster than Crumpler’s 2013 winning time and just under two minutes faster than his 2012 time. Guy Williamson was a scant 1 minute and 2 seconds behind Morgan for second place and Adrian Dale was third.

Sue Tucker with a finish time of 1 hour, 19 minutes and 13 seconds shattered the freshly minted 2013 ladies record set by Kat Crumpler last year. She took a considerable 3 minutes and 52 seconds off the record; Crumpler had taken almost three minutes off the record last year. Second placer Tash Ruschenski and third placer Gillian Howe also broke the 2013 record. The ladies field is getting faster and faster; there is now only 5 minutes and 37 seconds between the men’s and ladies’ records. The ladies have taken almost 8 minutes off their record since 2011.

Chris Ghiorse remains the course record holder with a time of 1:13:36 set in 2011.

Team Commonwealth won the team event with a time of 1 hour, 11 minutes and 32 seconds.

The event was held at Sandy Ground boatyard, Soper’s Hole. The event comprised a 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike ride and a five-kilometre run.

Next event on the BVI Triathlon Federation calendar is the Peter Island Athlon on June 14, details will be published shortly.

“The team is off to a fantastic start,” said Elsworth Philip, President of the BVI Swimming Federation. “The Federation hasn’t looked back since its first team event in 2011 and we continue to go from strength to strength, with a cadre of age group swimmers based at home and abroad who are propelling BVI swimming forward despite the local challenges and setbacks.”

BVI Rockers miss out on semi finals by seconds!

DSC_0781By: Charlie Jackson

As the Saint Martin Football Association U13 Boys Tournament continued on Saturday at the Stade Alberic A. Richards, Saint Martin, the  BVI “Rockers”  went undefeated in their two remaining group matches, suffering the heartbreak of conceding a late, late equalizer against the Risk Takers from St Maarten in the last game to miss out on a semi final berth.

The day’s action in Group B had begun with the Rockers facing St Martin Sud and from the first whistle the Rockers dominated their larger opponents with skill and speed.

Luka Reich went close to opening the scoring following good combinations of passing from Guillaume Parkins and Luka Chalwell. Marcus Butler was proving a handful down the right flank, skipping through challenges and launching a series of dangerous crosses.

Reich saw a shot on the turn from a Liam Blok free kick turned away by the keeper and just out of the path of Chalwell, who also saw a powerful free kick from just outside the box beaten away.

The sides reached the break still deadlocked, but in the 2nd period the Rockers finally got the goal they deserved when Parkins finished off a great flowing, inventive move, involving 3 or 4 BVI players, with an unstoppable shot.

Looking completely in control the Rockers where then stunned when the Referee awarded a penalty late on  for what seemed an innocuous challenge and Daniel Gilford had no chance, beaten by a well taken kick that flew into the net

A 1-1 draw against the more fancied team certainly got the crowd murmuring about the BVI and even better was to follow in the next game against the Risk Takers, although it would eventually end in heartbreak.

With a win the Rockers would have reached the semi finals and for almost the entire match it looked like that would be the case as once again the youngsters, growing in confidence and experience with each match they played took the game to their opponents.

Marcus Butler almost opened the scoring with a long range lobbed shot that was only inches too high and Reich saw his goal bound effort blocked on the line.

The Rockers defense was also playing its part with Blok a tower of strength and Gilford alert to any danger in goal.

The Rockers made the break through when Butler latched onto the loose ball after the Risk Takers keeper had only been able to half save a Chalwell effort and fired home from close range.

The Rockers were dominating play and Butler should have doubled the advantage, firing wide from the BVI left and then, with just a few seconds remaining, the Rockers suffered the cruel nature of the game when a harmless long Risk Takers clearance caught the wind and bounced over the surprised Gilford to nestle into the goal

The points garnered from the two drawn games meant that the Rockers would face Lazara F.C. from St Thomas to decide 5th and 6th place overall and even though many teams would have let their heads drop after going so close to a semi final place the Rockers played the game of their lives to rout their opponents 4-1.

Reich sublime half volley from 20 yards out had given the Rockers a 1-0 half time lead and in the second half they really turned up the heat, scoring their second via the boot of Miquel Marshall, the third direct from a Parkins corner and the fourth, a fantastic solo effort from Hash Banthia.

The Babes also had a good day, but didn’t get the results their play deserved as they bowed out of Group A with a 1-0 defeat by Lazara and a 3-0 defeat to Club Franciscain from Martinique.

Two individual bronze medals and an U18 Girls 4 x 100m Relay bronze medal brought the BVI’s 43rd Carifta Games medal haul to four after the second day of intense competition in Fort de France, Martinique on Sunday night.

Three National Youth and National Jr. Records—in the U18 Boys 400m Hurdles, U18 Girls 4x100m Relay and the Heptathlon—and an IAAF World Jr. Championships qualifier came on Sunday’s second day of the 3-day competition that wraps up today, as the territory’s athletes seek to improve on their rankings with competition in seven events.

Tynelle Huggins gave the BVI its second medal on during the morning session, when she earned an U20 Girls Discus Throw bronze with a heave of 40.45m—the second best mark of her career.

Today, she competes in the Javelin Throw, where she has mined U17 gold in 2012 and U20 silver in 2013.

On Sunday afternoon, Kyron McMaster put the disappointment of Saturday night’s sixth place finish in the 400m final behind to snatch bronze in a National Jr. Record time of 52.85 seconds in the U18 Boys 400m Intermediate Hurdles. It was only his third time running the event after he placed third in his heat in 56.08 to reach the final.

McMaster became the second IAAF World Jr. Championship qualifier in the competition joining Huggins who on Saturday night, added the 100m to her 200m qualifier from early in the season.

In the BVI’s final event of Sunday evening, the quartet of Zacharia “Zakie” Frett, Kala Penn, L’Tisha “Lea” Fahie and Huggins, won the territory’s fourth bronze when they finished third behind Jamaica and the Bahamas in the U18 Girls 4x100m Relay, with a National Jr. Record time of 46.30 seconds. The mark eclipsed the 46.62 ran at the Leeward Islands Invitational in 2013.

Penn was seventh in the Long Jump after cutting the sand at 5.60m, before taking up relay duties on the second leg.

Huggins—who became the BVI’s most prolific Carifta Games medalist with seven, breaking a tie with both Keita Cline and Chantel Malone who bagged six each—won her 200m heat in 23.6 seconds hand time on Sunday evening, to qualify for her third successive final. She’s seeking her first medal in this event.

Before taking up 4x100m Relay duties on the second leg, Kala Penn came seventh in the Long Jump after cutting the sand at 5.60m aided by a +2.6 mps breeze, while Ashley Penn was 18th after a 4.95m effort. Kala will see Triple Jump action today.

Two time bronze medalist Lakeisha “Mini” Warner qualified for tonight’s U18 Girls 800m final, after running 2 minutes 17.81 seconds to finish third in her heat.

Arianna Hayde continued the stellar performances of debutants when she finished seventh overall in the Heptathlon with a National Youth and National Jr. Record of 3,769 points, which came after winning her 800m heat in 2 minutes 40.39 seconds—good for 4th oveall. Only Kanishque “Kadi” Todman’s 4188 points from last year is better.

In the U18 Boys High Jump, Tahj Malone cleared 1.90m to place ninth overall

Tarique “Tweety” Moses had a non qualifying time of 2:04.23 in the U20 Boys 800m.

Two age group swimmers, Amarah Phillip, girls 15-17, and Elinah Phillip, girls13-14, have been selected to represent the BVI at the XXIX Carifta Swimming Championship in Savaneta, Aruba from April 22 to 26. This will be the BVI’s second appearance at the event after the territory’s inaugural appearance in 2012.

This year’s competition has been sanctioned by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) as a Youth Olympic Qualifier (YOG) qualifier will also serve as a Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games qualifying event. The Championship is expected to attract the best in the region while offering a very high level of competition.

The swimmers will compete in four events each, the girls 50 and 100 freestyle, and the 50 and 100 butterfly.

“Based on the rankings going into the event, the BVI has an excellent chance of medalling and bringing home BVI’s first Carifta swimming medals. It will mark a huge milestone in swimming for the territory, especially for the BVISF which has only been active since its first team was dispatched in 2011 to the OECS championships,” said National Coach and President of the Swim Federation, Elsworth Philip. At the BVI’s first Carifta appearance in 2012, the swimmers performed exceptionally well, making appearances in the finals on that first outing.

The two swimmers will be accompanied by their parents, Mr. Phillip as Coach, and Tracy Bradshaw, BVISF Secretary, who will also act as Manager and Chaperone.

Henry shatters BVI records for top Jr. College spots

Edlred Henry copyBy: Dean Greenaway

Eldred Henry, a British Virgin Islands 2013 Carifta Games Discus Throw and Shot Put bronze medalist shattered the territory’s Discus mark and improved his own standard in the Shot, during two competitions in Arizona over the weekend.

At the Mesa Classic Discus Throw Invitational on Friday, Henry, the Central Arizona College freshman demolished Eric Matthias’ 10-year old mark of 55.87m with a toss of 58.18m on his fourth attempt to place third overall.

Then at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe on Saturday, on his last attempt, Henry released a 17.34m effort to win the Shot Put and improve his own National Record of 17.07m at the Willie Williams Classic on March 21. His marks also put him at the top of the National Jr. College Athletics Association rankings in both events.

“My plan was not only to break the record but to surpass it and qualify for the Commonwealth Games,” Henry said of his Discus Throw mark where he’s aiming to throw 60m and over 19m in the Shot.  “My technique has gotten a lot better than before and I’m beginning to understand the concept of the technique which is allowing me to perform the way I am now.”

Henry who’s turning 20 this year is relatively new to the sport and has moved from throwing the Jr. to the Sr. implements said the transition was a bit challenging because with the lighter weights, he was accustomed to seeing the Shot and Disc going further than with the heavier one. He pointed out that his first coach Omar Jones had him throwing the heavier implements as he was about to enter the senior ranks and that has made his adjustments easier.

Despite his inexperience Henry said he knows he has the potential to grow.

“I’m still making simple mistakes but working on correcting them,” he explained. “I would like to take out the school record which is 62m in the Discus and would have to train twice as hard as I’m doing now. If it doesn’t happen this year it’s going to happen next year.”

Henry—fourth and fifth respectively in last year’s Pan Am Jr. Championships Shot Put and Discus Throw—said the international experience has helped him prepare for events like the Commonwealth Games and NACAC U23 Championships during the summer.

“I’ve just begun competing in track a year ago and going and competing in front of thousands of people, isn’t something everybody can do,” he noted. “Once you can get that fear out the way you can relax and perform how you are supposed to. That has helped me out and because in college I have competitions almost every week is helping me to get rid of that fear of competition so its just a matter of how hard and how far you can throw on that day.”
