Although there is still over a month of football left in the season, the Islanders went a long way to sealing the Premiership title with an emphatic 4-1 victory over the Sugar Boyz on Wednesday night on the A.O. Shirley Ground.

The win, which knocked the Sugar Boyz out of the Championship contention, means that whatever the result in the Islanders game on Sunday June 15th against the Wolues, a win against One Love next Wednesday, June 18th, will secure the first ever Premiership Trophy.

A win for One Love in that crunch game would then mean that they could pip the Islanders if they secure victories in their remaining fixtures.

The outcome of the match against the Sugar Boyz was effectively determined inside a crazy first five minutes for the Boyz defense when Valdo Andersen latched onto a long ball from Francis Primo ahead of the advancing Leslie Ambrose to slot home the opener and then Rohan Lenon doubled the score with the keeper nowhere in sight and only Pipe to beat from close range.

Pipe in fact blocked his first attempt, but had no chance with the second shot, when the ball bounced kindly at the feet of Lenon, who made no mistake when presented with a second opportunity.

Following a disallowed goal for off side, much to the dismay of Fitzroy Daley, Derol Redhead should have at least hit the target, if not pulled a goal back for the Boyz at the 15 minute mark, but his shot from 15 yards out went high over the Islanders bar.

Another warning for the Boyz came after 10 minutes of almost forgettable football from both sides when McGraw Baptiste made a despairing effort to cut out a pass from Andersen which was destined for the unmarked Daley on the edge of the box, but it at least stung them into some more positive attacking play which produced a fortuitous goal.

Michael Castillo’s speculative shot from outside the Islanders box, in the 26th minute, had plenty of spin and swerve on it, but Monty Butler, the Veterano Goliano for the Islanders, seemed to have it covered, if not somewhat casually. The ball, however had different ideas and deflected off Butlers arm and chest before nestling, almost apologetically, into the back of his goal.

Before the half time break though, Daley, having moments earlier been denied an appeal for a penalty, when Baptiste seemed to catch his trailing foot to send him tumbling in the Boyz box, restored the two goal advantage with a coolly placed shot past Ambrose.

Early in the second half Castillo should have done better from a free kick just outside the Islanders penalty area, but his tamely struck effort was too easy for Butler. The same player then almost latched onto a flicked header from Derol Redhead and then Butler atoned for his earlier mistake by pulling off a diving save from Nicola Luso’s header, who rose highest to meet a Terry Nanton free kick.

It proved to be the last chance for the Boyz as in the 69th minute Devon Leteen made it 4-1, curling home after a well placed cross Kevon Smith, who was in acres of space down the right following a cross field pass from Andersen.

Division One action returns to the A.O. Shirley Ground on Saturday, June 14th, when at 5pm the Panthers take on Old Madrid knowing a win is all they must strive for.

Old Madrid are top of the table and if they secure all 3 points, or even a draw, then they will be crowned Champions and gain promotion to the Premiership at the expense of the already demoted Rebels.

A win for Panthers and it will be down to goal difference to spilt the two teams, who have been the front runners from virtually day one of the season

Spartans deliver results as Basketball Summer League continues

As the Basketball Federation’s “Short and Sweet Back on our feet” Summer League continued this past week, Fearless crashed through the 100 point barrier twice, the CCT Legs were handed a walk over and Alanah Chalwell’s Spartans continued to flourish.

No Retreat, No Surrender was Spartan Law in the day of Leonidas and Chalwell has certainly instilled the same fighting spirit within her troops as was proven when they faced a third quarter onslaught from the Junior Lions, after a comfortable end to the first half and a tied opening quarter.

The first break came with the score 20-20 and no one could have had the vision to see how the Spartans would then race into a 10 point lead by the end of the second quarter, although watching Chalwell the casual observer always gets the feeling she has things under control and is one step ahead.

The third quarter though almost proved the Spartans undoing as the Lions overturned the 38-28 score line into just a one point defecit at 56-55, but whatever their true professions, Chalwell, as Leonidas claimed of the Spartans back in ancient Greece, had bought more soldiers to the battle and they recovered to outscore their opponents by 6 points in the last quarter and took the win 86-79.

Top scorer for the Spartans was Karvin Robin with 25, Nikita Naval had 16, Malaki Thomas 15 and Kingbob Leonard 12. The Junior Lions were led by 16 points from Tafari Winchester,  13 points from Dekembe Parsons and 12 by Prince Slavius.

Fearless then blew away Real Tool, 101-34, with 23 points coming from Romain Minott Junior, 19 from Kevin Bodkin and 18 from Franklyn Penn Junior. Real Tool, who didn’t get a double digit score until the 4th quarter were led by Melvin Knight’s  11 points.

All Ah Wee rounded out Friday’s action with a comfortable 81-52 win over the surprisingly lack luster Just Be You Kings. Jevon and Jamal Serrant scored 25 points and 22 respectively, whilst Nathaniel Malone finished with 11. The Kings got 19 from Sean Woods and just 10 from Ray Victor.

Having taken Saturday Night off to solve any conflict with the 2nd BVI Twilight Invitational Track Meet, Another Level were awarded a forfeiture over the Junior Kings and then Fearless racked up another triple point score in beating the Starz 110-69. Minott double doubled with 15 points and 10 rebounds, Jamoiri Dagou scored 19 points and Mikey Joseph 16. For the Starz,  for whom  Stephon Caul shined brightest, with 23 points and 14 points, only two others made contributions of note, namely Kimron Telemaque (10p, 13 r ) and Aldric Thomas, who scored 12 points.

The weekend action finished with the Legs gaining a forfeiture over the Pure Playaz, but at least it was a short and sweet weekend!

St Lucia take advantage of waning BVI to win 29-18

By: BVIsports.com

rugbylosetostlucia_b3192b16d7316eccbfaffe4f61a47eaeThe BVI looking for a win to get the NACRA Rugby Championship qualifying back on track on Sunday went down 29-18 to St Lucia with a display late in the second half that belied believe and had Coach Sherlock “Sam” Solomon benused by his Senior Players, but encouraged by his young charges.

The defeat made even  harder to take for the players given they had bossed large parts of the game, had been 13-5 ahead at half time and even extended that lead to 18-8 mid way through the second period.

Tom Chapman opened the scoring for the hosts, following up a Roan Thornton drive to the line, picking the loose ball up and diving over for a try.

Rory Thornton missed the conversion attempt and moments later the BVI defense was caught napping as Lenford Eugene ran straight through a flat back line to equalize.

Following a little pushing and shoving, which involved virtually all 30 players on the pitch and resulted in a spell in the sin bin for Imran William and Patrick Dennis, the BVI regained the lead through a penalty from Rory Thornton and then reached the comfort of half time extending the lead courtesy of a searing run from Vivien Harris.

Harris outpaced three St Lucia defenders from just inside his own half to score, but Thornton missed the conversion attempt leaving the score 13-5.

St Lucia converted a penalty from the boot of Colvis Samuel, to make it 13-8, after a dominating spell early in the second period, but the move of the match, at least from the home team perspective, saw Noel Maxwell score the easiest of tries in the left hand corner as the BVI finally began to move the ball across the field at pace. The conversion was missed and so was a penalty moments later and then the wheels fell off for the BVI.

At 18-8 ahead the BVI should have gone on to put the game away. However following a quickly taken “tap” penalty Cyriacus Isadore burst through the BVI defensive line from just inside his own half evaded three forlorn attempted tackles and scored under the posts. Samuel made the simple conversion and suddenly the whole game changed momentum with the score now just 18-15.

Jerry Charles ran through the BVI defense again moments later to make it 18-20, Samuel converted, extending the lead to 18-22 and then to put the icing on the cake, Eugene scored again to make it 18-27 and Samuel rubbed salt into the BVI wounds, rounding out the scoring at 18-29 with another successful conversion.

“I’m very proud of the team” commented St Lucia Captain, Charles “we held on into the second half and knew the BVI team were getting tired. We turned to our youth and speed and got around them to score the crucial points.”

BVI Coach, Sherlock “Sam” Solomon rued the poor handling skills shown by his team “we were doing so well in the first half and then deep into the second half, but St Lucia pressure and some poor tackling cost us the match. When they scored from their own 25 that took the wind out of us and changed the game.”

Solomon was pleased with the youngsters who took part, but also felt the senior players should have stepped up to the plate more “we worked on the Forwards controlling the ball, but after the first phase it just wasn’t happening. The youngsters had a good came, some of the seniors seemed to lack fitness by the end, but we didn’t control the ball enough.”

The BVI has one game left to play, against Curacao, whilst St Lucia moves onto a home game against St Vincent to wrap up their Group play.

Five All Comers and six meet records were broken, highlighting the 2nd BVI Twilight Invitational on Saturday evening at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.

Even before the opening ceremony had wrapped up, the USA’s Whitey Gipson opened the competition with an All Comers Record leap in the Long Jump, when she cut the sand at 6.42m on her first attempt. Her mark eclipsed the BVI’s Chantel Malone’s 6.09m record from 2008. Malone was second in a season’s best 6.29m effort and the U.S. Virgin Islands Waynetta Kirby, third in 6.06m—marking the first time that three women had cleared 6.00m in the territory.

Jamaica’s Anastacia Leroy who was second a year ago, won the Women’s 400m in 51.62 seconds—.03 faster than her last visit. St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Kineke Alexander was second in 51.78 and the Bahamas’ former World Youth and World Jr. champion Shaune Miller third in 52.60.

The first record on the track went when the USA’s Torrington Lawrence took the 400m race out to win in an All Comers Record of 45.45 seconds and eclipsed the Dominican Republic’s Gustavo Cuesta’s 45.87 mark established last year. The U.S. Virgin Islands’ Tabarie Henry—coming off 2-years of injuries—ran a season’s best of 45.75 to hold off the Bahamas’ Chris Brown, who slightly hurt his back in warm up by .02. Cuesta was fifth in 47.18.

USA’s Tawana Medows demolished Puerto Rico’s Genolskia Cancel 100m meet record of 11.62 seconds and missed the All Comers Record by .06 in winning with a time of 11.28 (1.7). Barbados Jade Bailey was second in 11.49 followed by the BVI’s Taheisa Harrigan-Scott in 11.57. St. Croix’s Laverne Jones-Ferrette was fourth in 11.61 while Karene King placed sixth in 11.75.

Guyana’s Adam Harris comfortably won the men’s 100m in 10.23 seconds (-1.3) ahead of St. Kitts and Nevis’ Brijesh “BJ” Lawrence’s 10.38, with the USA’s Ivory Williams 10.49 placing him third.

USA’s Kimmarra McDonald shattered Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner’s 800m All Comers Record of 2 minutes 10.92 seconds from 2012 to win the event after overhauling Trinidad and Tobago’s Alena Brooks in a stretch run duel, 2:06.12-2:06.31. Barbados’ Sadie Sealy was third in 2:08.65.

Tayron Reyes of the Dominican Republic outkicked the USA’s Richard Jones in the last 50 meters to win the 800m by taking down the BVI’s Greg Rymer’s 18-year old All Comers Record of 1 minute 50.12 seconds when he stopped the clock at 1:49.98. Jones was second in 1:50.71 followed by Puerto Rico’s William Gonzalez who was timed in 1:55.63.

Jamaica’s Jermaine Brown—a member of their 4x200m World Record breaking team at the IAAF World Relays—nipped the USA’s Sean McLean at the line to win the Men’s 200m by .03 in an All Comers Record of 20.46 seconds, wiping out the 20.82 of Anguilla’s Zharnel Hughes from last year. McLean finished in 20.49 followed by Honduras’ Ronaldo Palacios who ran 20.69, as the top five all went under the old mark.

U.S. Virgin Islands’ Allison Peter won the 200m in 23.41 seconds, ahead of Alexander’s, 23.55. Bailey ran 23.62 for third ahead of the BVI’s Karene King’s, 23.83. Harrigan-Scott edged St. Croix’s Laverne Jones-Ferrette, 23.91-23-93 for fifth with the BVI’s other athlete Ashely Kelly rounding out the competition in 24.02.

Huggins’ Jr. Record

Nelda Huggins, who has qualified for next month’s IAAF World Jr. Championships in both sprints, shattered her 100m National Youth and National Jr. Record of 11.77 seconds she ran last year and equaled at this year’s Carifta Games, with a time of 11.59 seconds to win the U20 Girls event. The wind reading was 0.8. L’Tisha “Lea” Fahie ran a personal best of 12.01 in second while Taylor Hill placed third in 12.12.

Kyron McMaster who has also qualified for World Jrs., in the 400m Hurdles, ran a season’s best 48.45 in the 400m.

Beyonce DeFreitas, 13, won the U20 Girls 400m in 56.82 seconds, leading Judine Lacey to 57.73 and Kelsha Fortune, 58.35—all personal bests.

The Blazers raced into a 26 – 15 first quarter lead with Sandy E. Nadal looking in ominous shooting form and then utilized a growing confidence and new found resolute defensive stability to keep the advantage through to half time.

Up by 9 at the break the Blazers withstood a ferocious surge by the Pure Playaz during the third quarter which saw the lead whittle away to just a point, before they themselves mounted a thrilling 4th quarter offensive charge to extend that slender advantage and run out winners by 10 points.

Nadal finished with 29 points and 6 rebounds, whilst Mikey S. Joseph scored 22 points and added 7 rebounds and 4 steals.

For the Playaz Mervin Potter Junior had 27 points with 10 rebounds and Deon Smith 11 points.

A huge crowd of family, fans, friends and rival teams witnessed one of the most incredible Finals in BDO School League history on Saturday May 31, 2014, as only a wonder goal could separate First Impressions U12’s from Joyce Samuel Primary School at the A.O. Shirley Ground.

It is rare that a contender for Goal of the Season actually happens in a final, but the Prentice boys, Jalen and Jahmal, conjured up a piece of Football magic that was not only worthy of the accolade, but also handed First Impressions a winner in a 3-2 victory over defending U12 Champions Joyce Samuel Primary School as the BVIFA BDO School League climaxed on Saturday.

For the older generation the goal was created out of Dutch “Total Football” folklore, a fitting analogy as both play in Orange and it would be no surprise had the drag back and pass from Jalen Prentice been Johann Cruyff, the Dutch Master, passing to Johnny Rep in 1974.

For the newer generation read Ronaldo to Benzema, Suarez to Stirling or even Aguero to Dzeko.

Taking a pass from Guillaume Parkins into his stride Jalen dragged the ball from left to right and flicked a pass from behind his body into the JSPS penalty box. Brother Jahmal reacted first and deftly lifted the ball over the diving Riley Christopher with the outside of his boot to send the ball curling into the net.
That it took such a moment of brilliance from FIPS to secure a hard fought win was testament to how well JSPS had played during the final, which saw them recover from going a goal down, scored by Parkins, to go 2-1 up early in the second half.

Giovanni Grant leveled the game in the 17th minute and then Christopher scored direct from a clearance to put JSPS ahead. Parkins then scored his second, from the penalty spot, despite Christopher making a valiant effort to block the powerfully struck shot and during the last five minutes both teams had chances to score, but with defenses at both ends staying resolute it took a moment of magic to determine the destination of the Trophy and when it mattered most, up popped the Prentice Boys.

The BDO and LIME School Leagues Grand Finale had begun with the High School Girls of Elmore Stoutt High School overcoming a Begrado Flax Educational Centre Combined team 1-0 thanks to a close range strike from the very promising “Lala.”

The LIME Boys game between ESHS and BFEC then remained deadlocked at 0-0 before the BDO U7 Primary School Final took centre stage.

Althea Scatliffe Primary School took full advantage of their penalty shoot out prowess to defeat Begrado Flax 3-2 in a sudden death shoot out after the game ended 0-0.
ASPS had reached the semi finals with a win on Penalties and also claimed their spot in the Final with a similar win over Robinson O’Neal Primary before K’ Jari Thomas kept a cool head to fire home the winner in the final.

Jahari Lacey and Keshawn Martin also scored for ASPS, while Jaden Abrahams and Emanuel Etienne were successful for BFEC.

In the U9 Final FIPS raced into a 2-0 lead over Cedar Green courtesy of a Nathan Adams opener in the 10th minute and a Jalen Prentice strike in the 15th minute.

Azarni Callwood pulled one back via a long range shot for Cedar in the 25th minute, but FIPS held on to secure their first Trophy of the day.

The U12 Final then proved the true value of the commitment of BDO to support the BVIFA in fostering talent at youth level and with the support of LIME the developmental stages for young footballers are well and truly set, with the only outcome a talented group of youngsters that will represent the Territory with pride and honour for years to come.

Versatile Maxford Pipe had his easiest weekend of the season in winning the kick off of the 2014 Ceres Juices 10K Series on Saturday.

Typically playing Cricket and Football as well, his Vincy team was eliminated from the June 1 Digicel Twenty 20 final and his Football team was not in action. Added to the mix, Guy Williamson, his biggest road racing rival was also absent.

Running unchallenged, Pipe took control within the first quarter mile of the City Circuit race en route to winning in 41 minutes and 33 seconds. He was followed by Julius Farley in 43:42 and Ian Montgomery in 43:55.

“First of all, I must give God thanks for health and strength in running this race,” Pipe said. “It was a flat course, no hills and I enjoyed it a lot. But, I miss Guy. If he was here, I would have run a faster race. I’m satisfied with the time of just over 40 minutes and hopefully I’ll get it down and under 40 minutes by the end of the series.“

Pipe said he set a goal of breaking 19 minutes in the recently concluded Blenheim Trust 5K Series and he accomplished it and is looking to meet his time goal in the longer race. “It will take some hard work and getting my body back into it again,” he explained. “I hope the races aren’t too far apart so I can train harder, keep my body fit and healthy so I can make the time.”

Katrina Crumpler—seventh overall—was the top woman in 47:47 and was followed by Prudence Cooper in 51:04 and NiMade Oniaish in 52.08.

Crumpler, who ran the Chicago Marathon in 3hrs 25.09 said it was a good course, a good turnout and she loves the 10K Series. “I’m still getting back into the season of running and I’m not back into form from last year,” she noted, with her last competition being a victory in the recent Virgin Gorda Half Marathon. “It’s a good enough time and I’m happy.”

The next race in the series that leads up to the BVI Half Marathon in November, is on June 28 in Carrot Bay.

Final Results: 1. Maxford Pipe, 41 minutes and 33 seconds.  2. Julius Farley, 43:42. 3. Ian Montgomery, 43:55. 4. Curwin Andrews, 44:59. 5. Ravindra Sukhu, 45:28. 6. Adam De Monte, 47:37. 7. As the qualifying rounds for the 2015 Gold Cup got underway on Friday May 30, 2014, Virgin Islands faced French Guiana in Group Two, hosted by Aruba and were downed 6-0.

The game played on the Astroturf surface at the Complejo Deportivo Guillermo Prospero Trinidade, Oranjestad, saw the VI concede a first half penalty, but otherwise match their taller and seemingly stronger physically opponents.

However in the second half with a lack of match fitness beginning to show and a spate of minor injuries upsetting the team’s rhythm, the VI conceded five more goals and looked a tired, relieved group when the final whistle blew.

The injury problems ahead of Sunday night’s game against the host, Aruba, include Troy Caesar (minor concussion), Gregory James (instep bruising), Joel Fahie (ankle), and Chris Telemaque (groin).

“We didn’t get any warm up games,” lamented Coach Avondale Williams. “The players have been outplayed by height and body strength, we were pushed off the ball too easily, but will learn from this and come back strong.”

The VI did create themselves a few chances and showed that when they got the ball to feet and passed it around, then they were a threat to the opposition.

The competition will once again decide several teams that will qualify for CONCACAF’s showpiece event and, on this occasion, one which will obtain an automatic berth to the Centennial America Cup 2016. The champion of the 2015 Gold Cup will then participate in a play-in match against the 2013 champion United States for a spot in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Cuba is the defending champion, capturing it’s first-ever title two years ago by topping Trinidad & Tobago 1-0 in the final. Both sides advanced to the Gold Cup along with Haiti and Martinique.

An historic moment was shared yesterday May 27, 2014 when the BVI Olympic Committee, the Virgin Islands Volleyball Association and Ms. Jackie Weekes inked a contract to put in place a National Sports Structure.

As Mr. Ephraim Penn, BVIOC president, explained at the signing held at the Olympic offices, the contract was historic for two reasons: “It is the first National Sports Structure to be signed and we have many more planned,” he stated. “It is also historic because for the first time a sport has not had to bring in an expert from oversees to implement developmental programmes. Jackie Weekes is right here and has the necessary qualifications to gain the approval of the Olympic Solidarity Organisation who are providing the funds.”

Those funds are to the tune of $30,000 and the contract runs from June 1st until December 31st 2014 by which time Ms. Weekes will have been charged by the Volleyball Association and the BVIOC to undertake a thorough analysis of the sport’s current programmes and development from Primary School to National Junior Teams.

“This programme will be at the forefront of keeping volleyball alive,” continued Penn. “It is also very important to recognize Jackie’s past efforts to develop the sport and to now assist her and the local association in getting the sport back to the high levels it once enjoyed.”

Roy Barry, Vice President of VIVA, thanked the BVI Olympic Committee for partnering in the programme. “It is great to have one of our own in the position and exposing the youths to the sports. Hopefully we will unearth a lot of gems and the sports will grow in the Territory,” said Barry.

Weekes will hit the ground running and already has a programme for young Volleyball enthusiasts established at the Multi Purpose Sports Complex on Wednesdays and Saturdays. By August she hopes to have Junior National teams in preparation and practice for tournaments and will be working in schools almost every day from September.

All member federations of the BVI Olympic movement were given the opportunity to apply for the various programmes presented in the Olympic Quadrennial Programme and Volleyball took full advantage. It is anticipated that other sports will be following suit to take full advantage of the support offered by the BVIOC.
