Leading local long distance runner, Katrina Crumpler placed 10th in the women’s division of the NACAC Petit Bourg 10km road race in Guadeloupe on Saturday.

The race attracted 201 participants from around the region including Mexico, Rwanda and Kenya.

“It was the first time I’ve run the race and I didn’t know where the hills were and there were lots of them—nothing steep but continuous so it was hard to get into a rhythm—there were lots of turns too,” explained Crumpler who was timed in 46 minutes in 15 seconds in the hot conditions. “I liked the course. It was very scenic and pretty. You don’t get bored with it and it was quite interesting. There was very good support as well.”

Crumpler who has run 43:30 before, said she wasn’t sure what time she’d do, said she was quite pleased with the performance.

“I would have liked to run a bit quicker but getting tenth was excellent,” she said. “I loved running with the other girls because you don’t get that in Tortola very often and it was so inspiring to see the women who are quicker than you. There were some amazing athletes there—men and women—so I loved seeing them.”

Crumpler will be gearing up to run in the November 22 Ogier/Deloite BVI Sunrise Half Marathon. Some 55 persons have already preregistered for the event including 14 from Puerto Rico.

Her husband Russell who accompanied her and decided to race finished 100th overall with a time of 48:48.

Repeating their success from the Beef Island 10k earlier in the road racing season, Julius Farley, and tender teenager, Tallulah Kinkead led a fast field in Saturday’s Ceres Juices 10K Series tour stop at Trellis Bay, Beef Island. Dubbed the “Steel Man Warm up” the course comprised three laps of the Eastern tip of Beef Island over rolling terrain.

A cat and mouse game developed between the lead pack of Farley, Ian Montgomery, Ravi Sukhu and James Carr, as they led the first lap while sizing up each other. On the second lap Farley and Montgomery broke away and opened up a small lead. Farley then pushed the pace on the third lap to shake Montgomery, leaving the field unable to respond and took the tape in 41 minutes and 48 seconds. Montgomery ran 42:59 in second with Sukhu placing third in 43:42.

In the women’s division, Rosmond Johnson established a swift 7:30 min/mile pace, notching up the tempo for the first four miles. However, Johnson was unable to hold the pace on the last lap with soon to be 13-year old Tallulah Kinkead on her trail.

Kinkead slowly and methodically reeled in Johnson and seized the lead with a mile left for a 48 seconds margin of victory over Johnson, covering the course in 48:06. Johnson finished in 48:54 with Claire-Louise Whiley rounding off the podium places in 49:32.

In the power walking field Gerry Rose and Jenny McConnell teamed up to win their respective divisions

Mr. Williams brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Football, having played and coached for the National team. He also Coaches the Islanders F.C, perennial Champions of the Domestic League and holders of many of the Associations Knockout Cup’s.

Mr. Williams’ new role will fill part of the void left with Mr. Keith “Grell” Griffith’s departure from his position as BVIFA Technical Director at the conclusion of the 12 month contract.

Whilst a replacement for Griffith has yet to be confirmed Williams will be pushing ahead with developing the game and making sure the long term strategy of the Football Association is met.

“I’m very pleased to accept the position,” said Williams. “I’m looking forward to improving the High School league standard to make the games more competitive to create a U17 team to fit in with the new National Age group’s policy. I’m also looking forward to establishing an U15 Youth Tournament outside of the schools programme but generated by an infusion of new players from within the work done in schools at both Secondary and Primary Level.”

In the longer term, Mr. Williams said he would like to see more technical improvements, increased physical fitness, tactical awareness and is looking forward to working with the FA’s new Technical Director, when appointed, and also continuing the strong coaching relationship with F.A. Coach, Cassandra Gregg, who runs the Primary After School Programme and BDO Primary School League as well as assisting with the U14 Boys in the Digicel Centre of Excellence and U15 girls.

Ms. Gregg was involved in the very first Centre of Excellence back in 1999 and also the first After School Programme which began with support from the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports in 2000.

Now in its 14th year, and still supported by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, the programme encompasses almost every school with practice scheduled for each afternoon (3.30pm – 5.oopm) of the week as detailed below:

Leonora Delville, Ivan Dawson, Isabella Morris, Enid Scatliffe, Seventh Day Adventist, Ebenezer Thomas, Joyce Samuel, Willard Wheatley and Francis Lettsome practice on Monday and Wednesday.

Enis Adams, Alexandrina Maduro, First Impressions, Althea Scatliffe, Agape, St Georges and Montessori take to the fields Tuesday and Thursday.

“I’ve seen the programme grow every year,“ commented Cass. “And this year especially the enthusiasm from Boys and Girls has been amazing. I think the Primary School, when it starts in the New Year, will prove to be the most competitive yet.”

Youngsters can still sign up for the programme which costs just $10 and Parents can get further details from School Principals or from the BVIFA Office (494 5655) across from the Botanic Gardens.

Coach Cass will also be taking a group of Boys from the Centre of Excellence to the Beach at Cane Garden Bay this Saturday not only for some fun and team building but also to put in some strength work in an ideal setting.

The trip departs from the A.O. Shirley on Saturday 11th October at 8.30pm and returns at 1pm. Players are expected to walk with $10 for food after practice, but drinks will be provided.

Five swimmers from the Makos Swim Club got their 2014-2015 season started on a high note last weekend at the St Thomas Swimming Association’s appropriately named ‘September Kick Off’ meet.

The meet was a preparation event in the lead up to the BVIs now annual participation in the OECS Swimming Championships.

Swimming for the Makos was Kayla Roberts, Tia Roberts, Gisselle Archibald Bowers, Chakia Smith and Jayden Marshall. Coach Elsworth Phillip noted that for the team it was an opportunity to race under meet conditions and shake off some of the summer rust after the break.

All 5 Makos team members came back having earned top 3 placing in at least 2 of their individual events and quite a few personal bests. Training continues with one more preparatory meet planned before the BVI team is selected for the OECS Championships in November.

It was a joint event with the Virgin Gorda (VG) Branch of the BVI Cancer Society, at Race #2 of the Virgin Gorda leg of the HLSCC Highland Spring Race Series. The walk/run fundraiser was especially slated to bring greater recognition to the Virgin Gorda Community regarding childhood cancer given that October is Childhood Cancer Awareness month.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Walk/Run fundraiser
Over eighty persons walked or ran in support of Childhood Cancer Awareness while some concurrently competed as part of the race series. Competitors completed the College races’ 2 mile route while other participants completed a longer route taking them to the top of the Baths and back.

Race Director Stephanie Russ Penn indicated that it was a pleasure for HLSCC to partner and assist in this community event and help in the awareness efforts. The event was coordinated jointly with Debbie Bruce and other members of the VG Branch of the BVI Cancer Society.

“This event was another opportunity to re-enforce and further educate the community and the youth about one of the silent killers otherwise known as Cancer,” said Ms Bruce.  She urges greater participation and more serious action in the future to bring greater awareness to the community as cancer has no age and no knowledge of culture and nationality.

Collectively, Ms Bruce and Mrs. Russ Penn extend much appreciation to the children of the various schools, parents, the wider community and the members of the VG Cancer Society Branch for the support and organization of the event.
