The British Virgin Islands National Football Team is facing its biggest challenges in recent years and certainly the biggest challenge for this present squad of young men competing in an official CONCACAF double header against Suriname on October 13th and Martinique on the 16th of October.

According to coach Dan Neville, due to the postponement of the CONCACAF sanctioned Martinique game , compounded by the fact that the BVI national team have to play all of their “home” games away from home because of the ongoing repairs to the new facility, the BVI is faced with the two very challenging match ups.

Coach Neville has accepted the reality that his team is walking straight into the fire but feels his players are mentally prepared after their previous tournament a few months ago when the BVI team went to St Barths and returned home, for the first time victorious in over a decade, being undefeated in all four games – drawing one and winning the other three out right in a three way tournament which also included a warm up game in St. Martin.

Coach Neville said, “we believe it is important that we adhere to our long-term plan for the 2026 World Cup qualification, and with that in mind, we have selected a youthful but able squad. There is some terrific young talent from our island and that, alongside some experience, will hopefully provide a basis for us to develop and evolve both now and in the future.”

According to President of the BVI Football Association, Andrew Bickerton, “The BVIFA has for some time now been putting together a strategy with a long term approach of the development of its youngsters from the under 13 level and above in order to, not only qualify to play in the 2026 World Cup, but to qualify with a group of youngsters all of whom are very capable and have developed and learned all their skills at home here with our local BVI coaches.”

The 21 man squad includes three goal keepers: Ben Chapman (Leek Town FC), Phil Jules (Panthers FC) and Will Skingley, (Shortford FC). The defenders are Liam Blok (International school, The Hague), Charles Medway (Champion Education Academy), Phil Nelson (Wolues FC), James Drury (Wolues FC), Chris Pease (Wolues FC), Josh Bertie (Andover Town FC), and Troy Ceaser (Andrew University). The Midfielders are Jamie Wilson (Wolues FC), Carlos Septus (The Rebels FC), Leo Forte (Wolues FC), Christian Zavier (Peachtree City FC), Trevor Peters (The Rebels FC), Robbie Green (Hyde Utd FC) and Tosh Gallimore (Westfield FC). The strikers are Jordan Johnson (Leek Town FC), Bailey Rowe (Champion Education Academy) and Tyler Forbes (Maldon and Tiptree FC).

“These are very important to the project as a whole because, once this has been completed, the BVIFA can then put in the athletics track.” said Bickerton.

Mr Bickerton also disclosed that FIFA have also approved the next stage of the project which is the foundation of the grandstand “so with some of the funding already in place the BVIFA would be able to get that stage of the project on the way very probably after the end of the hurricane season, as it is a much larger project.”

BVI national football team warm up with 3-2 win against St Maarten

By BVI Football Association

The BVI national football team are in Dutch St. Maarten in preparation for a tournament to be played in St. Barthelemy (St Barths) against the host team St. Barths, and French St. Martin.

Jamie Wilson, James Drury and Phil Nelson who are also expected to be in the starting line-up for the international fixture, made their debut in a warm up match against St Maarten.

St Maarten started out impressively on their home turf, dominating much of the early play which lead to a few early chances at goal, but once the BVI got settled in they looked like a much better squad and forced an own goal after a lovely cross in from Troy Ceasar and which gave the BVI a 1-0 lead.

BVI continued to press and looked dangerous as they put together several half chances with some excellent combination plays in the latter part of the first half.

Just 10 minutes later and in the 35th minute the BVI extended their lead through Jordan Johnson who was brilliant with his clinically executed goal which came from a neat passing move on his left. Despite St. Maarten being able to capitalize from an error made in the midfield, the BVI were still able to end the half leading by 2-1.

After the interval BVI again started tentatively and this time St. Maarten capitalized and made it 2-2. The BVI coach Dan Neville along with manager John Reilly wasted no time calling a quick substitution and introduced Kevin Fisher, Bailey Rowe and Liam Blok which immediately put the BVI back in control of the game.

After 65 minutes of play, Bailey Rowe made it 3-2 with a wonderfully crafted goal, which saw him picking up possession after a neat interchange with Charles Medway and Jamie Wilson who has been the hot foot in the local league in Tortola. Rowe calmly lifted the ball over the head of the St. Maarten centre back before clinically slotting the ball past the on rushing goal keeper.

Wilson and Fisher had a few near chances late in the second half but neither was able to convert. St. Maarten also made a late press but the BVI defence proved to be up to the task as the BVI held on for their first victory against the hosts since 2011.

What made the victory for the BVI even more impressive was the fact that there were 7 teenagers chosen in the squad which included 16 year olds Tyler Forbes, Charles Medway and Bailey Rowe; 17 year olds Carson Price, Liam Block and Tosh Gallimore and 18 year old Leo Forte. A confident BVI squad will now more on to St. Barths.

Mr. Penn summarized the activities and achievements of the national federations over the last 12 months and invited attending national federation representatives to provide additional information on their progress.

“The public may be forgiven for thinking that sports had been put on the back burner since the August floods and Hurricanes Irma and Maria,” said Mr. Penn. “However, this is not the case as illustrated by the National Federations’ reports of individual and team success. We are encouraged and excited that not only did the coaches and athletes show their resilience and determination to continue with their sports following the natural disasters, but they went on to win medals, titles and trophies and improve on their previous scores and times! Congratulations to all involved.”

Coaches from Athletics, Archery, Football, Rugby, and Tennis spoke on the recovery of their sports following the August floods and September hurricanes and encouraged attendees at the Sports Festival to join in their demo sessions taking place on the field. A 12-month review of the National Federation activities is set out below.

The morning set up included a 10,000 Step Challenge and an information booth on anti-doping. There were children’s bouncy castles courtesy of Digicel and Red Cross volunteers were on hand to ensure the safety of all participants. Roadtown Wholesale provided Dasani water, Powerade, Coca Cola and Sprite throughout the day.

Olympic Day was established in 1948 as an annual occasion where everyone everywhere can get together in their communities to celebrate the Olympic values of Respect, Excellence and Friendship and also celebrate the Olympic Day pillars: Move. Learn. Discover.

In his Olympic Day message to people around the world, IOC President, Thomas Bach said, “For the past 70 years, Olympic Day commemorates the founding modern Olympic Movement. Olympic Day reminds us that anyone, anywhere, can enjoy and benefit from sport. In our fast-changing society, Olympic Day is an excellent way to encourage all people to lead healthy and active lives and to promote the role of sport in society. Our thanks and gratitude go to the National Olympic Committees who are bringing sport and its values closer to the people through the many sporting, educational and cultural activities that are organized throughout the year. Thank you for encouraging people of all backgrounds and ability to get up and get moving, to discover sport and to embrace Olympic Values. ”

VI National U14 Football Squad runners up at Sint Maarten tourney

The Virgin Islands’ National U14 Squad returned from a four-team football tournament in Sint Maarten over the weekend of May 18 – 20 with the Runners Up trophy proudly tucked under their arms.

Despite having lost their first two games to very strong and fit Sint Maarten and Martinique teams, the boys rallied to beat the eventual champions, the US Virgin Islands team 2-0.

Day two began with an upset when the USVI beat Sint Maarten on penalties in the first semi-final. The BVI then played their hearts out in the next semi-final against favourites, Martinique.

It was the mighty versus the young underdogs. BVI got an early first goal which put the favourites on the back foot and the BVI then endured shot after shot until Martinique equalized just before half time.

The 2nd half was all about defence and the boys managed to hold on to a draw before moving onto a nail biting penalty shoot, which the boys won!

The final itself began as a very tight game with both teams taking time to settle their nerves and find patterns of play. However, the USVI scored first and shortly after a Denvin Jones effort flew wide, the USVI doubled their lead on the stroke of half time

Whatever Coach Manley said at half time certainly had the desired effect as the boys went on the offensive. It was still 2-0 with less than five minutes to go when, following a series of corners, the USVI began to wilt and a defensive area led to a penalty. The shot was coolly converted by Sheldon Toney, who only 2 hours earlier had been in the back of an ambulance on his way to the hospital to get his ankle checked out.

The BVI weren’t done yet though and, with the ref’s whistle on its way to his mouth, another corner flew across the USVI box and Denvin Jones rose high to nod home the equalizer.

The whole weekend was filled with highs and lows and it did not stop there as the tired legs and exhausted minds tried to raise themselves up over one more hurdle.

However, it proved one mountain too many and the USVI ran out 4-2 winners.

The BVI Football Association is pleased to announce that both Ryan Ramlall and Deshawn Richardson will be gong to the World Cup 2018 in Russia as part of “Gazprom Football For Friendship”, an international children’s social programme supported by Soccer’s World Governing Body, FIFA and UEFA.

The participants will be split into teams and organized using the “football for friendship” principle – athletes of different nationalities, different genders and different physical abilities will play in one team. Each team will be trained by young coaches from different countries and more than 5000 media from around the world will cover the programme events, as well as the F4F International Children’s Press Center, consisting of young 12-year-old journalists from 211 countries and regions.

As an ecological initiative of Football for Friendship, all the 32 International Friendship Teams will be named after endangered animals of all the continents of the world

Chaperoned by the Mr. Richie Morton and Mr. Ramlall, Deshawn from Virgin Gorda will be going as a player, whilst Ryan, also from VG and attending the Bregado Flax Educational Center, decided to say ‘yes!’ to this opportunity to represent the BVI as a young journalist.

“I love sports and I love writing – a combination of which makes me a great junior reporter and I am thankful that I am given this rare and unique opportunity to help promote football and important human values such as friendship, equality and fairness. Most importantly, this opportune global event enhances a critical focus: FRIENDSHIP. That is, in my opinion, what would and should help to improve our world, making it a better place through the Football for Friendship Programme,” said Ryan.

The event culminates with the Football for Friendship World Championship on June 12, 2018. The next day the young ambassadors will meet at the most important event, the Football for Friendship International Children’s Forum, where they will discuss ways of promoting the programme’s key values across the globe.

During their time at the F4F, young players, under the guidance of young coaches and under the supervision of famous players, will be learning about 9 key values of the F4F programme in the Nine Values School: Tradition, Peace, Friendship, Victory, Equality, Health, Fairness, Respect and Devotion.

This initiative has already been recognized by the UN as a unique educational programme.

211 countries and regions joined the Football for Friendship in 2018, with the final events of the season held in Moscow, Russia, 8-15 June 2018.
