Fifth Place for Thad Lettsome at ISSA Nationals

Thad Lettsome represented Tabor Academy at the US Inter Scholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) National Championships sailing the Laser during the weekend of weekend of 27-28 October.
Lettsome finished in fifth place overall with two first place scores in his series.
 
It was a cool weekend with light, shifty winds for the most part until the last two races when a shift to the west provided a solid 12-15knts of breeze to end the regatta.
The regatta was hosted by Macatawa Bay Yacht Club on Lake Michigan.

Men’s National Football team executes a game of guts and pride in CONCACAF Nations League Qualifier

BVI Men’s National Football Team in CONCACAF Qaulifier, Martinique.

The BVI Men’s National Football team had a week to remember in Martinique when they came up against two tough opponents who have historically given them a hard time in the CONCACAF Nations League Qualifier for the Gold Cup.

The BVI team first came up against Suriname Saturday on October 13 and then three days later had to play against a very experienced Martinique team. The Suriname game which started around 4.00pm was played at the Andre Kampervieen stadium while Martinique chose to play their game at their pride and joy, their national football stadium – the Stade Municipal Pierre Aliker multipurpose stadium in Fort-de-France, Martinique.

All scheduled home games for the CONCACAF qualifiers could not be played in the BVI due to the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Irma to the football stadium in Greenland.

The Suriname game proved to be a hard one with the talented Stefano Rijssel finding the back of the net in the 23rd minute of play. The BVI men looked good but conceded another goal score by Brian Eshot 2 minutes before the half.

The BVI played good football in the second half until a left boot shot by Donnegy Fer wrong footed the goalkeeper to make the score 3-0. It was the talented Stefano Rijssel who scored in the 75th minute to make the score 4-0 and then a late goal by Ivenzo Comvalius saw the game end 5-0 in favour of Suriname.

Coach Dan Neville knowing his team had another tough encounter in three days from a better Martinique team did not allow the team to focus on the defeat but rather concentrated on the upcoming game and on making adjustments.

Well after 45 minutes of play, the strategy seemed to have worked as the BVI went into the locker room with a nil-nil score line and disappointed French supporters. Credit for the first half was mainly attributed to Ben Chapman who executed three amazing saves in the first half.

The BVI got out done in the second half by a set play which saw Kevin Parsemain put a free kick over the BVI wall and into the top right corner of the net. The rest of the game saw the BVI team play excellent football and with 80 minutes played the BVI stood at 0-1 down, while a restless Martinique crowd were shouting for goals at their national stadium. The chain was broken in the 83rd minute by Mickae Biron, followed by two back to back goals in extra time by Parsemain and Biron, which could only go down to lack of experience by this young BVI team who seemingly relaxed a little too soon before the final whistle.

Coach Dan Neville praised his team for a game of guts and pride, which were it not for the few lapses in concentration late in the game, could easily have ended at a very respectable 0-1.

Coach Dan has also named an 18-man squad in preparation for their upcoming game to include Ben Chapman, Charles Medway, Josh Bertie, Troy Ceasar, James Drury, Tosh Gallimore, Jamie Wilson, Bailey Rowe, Carlos Septus, Leo Forte, Phillip Jules, Phil Nelson, Trevor Peters, Chris Pease, Christian Zavier, Robbie Green, Jordan Johnson and Tyler Forbes.

The BVI team now move onto Anguilla on Friday 16th November where they will play a home game in the CONCACAF Nations League against Bonaire. Their final qualifier game will be against Turks & Caicus next year March 2019.

BVI Women’s Team Undefeated In Anguilla’s Hit Your 2nd Shot 1st Fastpitch Tournament

On Friday, October 19, 2018 the Virgin Islands Softball – Baseball female team presented their championship trophy to Ephraim Penn, President of the BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC). Both male and female teams were invited to Anguilla to compete in the first Hit Your 2nd Shot 1st Fast Pitch Tournament from October 12th – 14th 2018. The teams played against Anguilla and two teams from St. Maarten for the title.

Upon completion of the tournament, the female team was victorious with an undefeated record, while the male team placed 3rd overall.

The final game ended with a competitive fight against St. Maarten Team F with a final score 4 – 3 giving the female team the title to return to the British Virgin Islands with. The team’s pitcher, Ms. Kennisha Powell was awarded Best Pitcher in the tournament. “The championship game against St. Maarten was pretty competitive as the game went extra innings
and the team did well,” said Ms Powell.

Mr. Penn encouraged the team to stick together and continue to prepare themselves for other competitions. He further explained that it is the BVIOC’s goal to work with the teams to have this completed well.

“While the team missed this cycle of the 2018 CAC Games held in Barranquilla, Columbia there are high hopes that they will continue to work hard to the qualify for the 2022 CAC Games in Panama City, Panama,” said Mr. Penn.  “We recognise  that it is very hard to keep a team sport going but we encourage the players to stay focused as the Olympic Committee fully supports the work done thus far.”

Mr. Penn also encouraged the involvement of youths and stressed the importance of having a program implemented as
soon as possible under the Virgin Islands Softball – Baseball Association (VISBA) since softball is now in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the World Baseball Softball Confederation has made major changes in age brackets which everyone must adhere to.

The new competitions are 12 and under (mixed), 15 and under, 18 and Under, 23 and under, Open Male, and Open
Female and the VI must make the necessary changes with the youths in order to participate and to be competitive.

VISBA is in the midst of planning local activities and is hopeful that softball lovers will continue to exercise a bit of patience. In the meantime, the association plans to support other islands and tournaments.

“Although it has been an extremely tough year the team is excited about getting things in full motion,” said Terrence Chinnery, President, VISBA.

BVI Men’s National Team at big CONCACAF match up

The British Virgin Islands National Football Team is facing its biggest challenges in recent years and certainly the biggest challenge for this present squad of young men competing in an official CONCACAF double header against Suriname on October 13th and Martinique on the 16th of October.

According to coach Dan Neville, due to the postponement of the CONCACAF sanctioned Martinique game , compounded by the fact that the BVI national team have to play all of their “home” games away from home because of the ongoing repairs to the new facility, the BVI is faced with the two very challenging match ups.

Coach Neville has accepted the reality that his team is walking straight into the fire but feels his players are mentally prepared after their previous tournament a few months ago when the BVI team went to St Barths and returned home, for the first time victorious in over a decade, being undefeated in all four games – drawing one and winning the other three out right in a three way tournament which also included a warm up game in St. Martin.

Coach Neville said, “we believe it is important that we adhere to our long-term plan for the 2026 World Cup qualification, and with that in mind, we have selected a youthful but able squad. There is some terrific young talent from our island and that, alongside some experience, will hopefully provide a basis for us to develop and evolve both now and in the future.”

According to President of the BVI Football Association, Andrew Bickerton, “The BVIFA has for some time now been putting together a strategy with a long term approach of the development of its youngsters from the under 13 level and above in order to, not only qualify to play in the 2026 World Cup, but to qualify with a group of youngsters all of whom are very capable and have developed and learned all their skills at home here with our local BVI coaches.”

The 21 man squad includes three goal keepers: Ben Chapman (Leek Town FC), Phil Jules (Panthers FC) and Will Skingley, (Shortford FC). The defenders are Liam Blok (International school, The Hague), Charles Medway (Champion Education Academy), Phil Nelson (Wolues FC), James Drury (Wolues FC), Chris Pease (Wolues FC), Josh Bertie (Andover Town FC), and Troy Ceaser (Andrew University). The Midfielders are Jamie Wilson (Wolues FC), Carlos Septus (The Rebels FC), Leo Forte (Wolues FC), Christian Zavier (Peachtree City FC), Trevor Peters (The Rebels FC), Robbie Green (Hyde Utd FC) and Tosh Gallimore (Westfield FC). The strikers are Jordan Johnson (Leek Town FC), Bailey Rowe (Champion Education Academy) and Tyler Forbes (Maldon and Tiptree FC).

Death of Patrick Baumann, IOC Member sends shockwaves

Mr Patrick Baumann, IOC member and Secretary General of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) died October 14, 2018 aged 51.

It is with the greatest sorrow and shock that the International Olympic Committee and its member NOCs learned of the death of Mr Patrick Baumann, IOC member in Switzerland, in Buenos Aires. He was 51.

Patrick Baumann was a central figure of the Olympic Movement.

Former player, coach and referee, Patrick Baumann dedicated his life to basketball and to the sport community. Deputy Secretary General (1995-2002) of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), he was then unanimously appointed Secretary General by the FIBA Central Board in 2002, a role he has held since. He has been greatly instrumental in the transformation and the growth of the sport in the international basketball community, successfully supporting for instance the popularisation of 3×3 basketball.

IOC President Thomas Bach said: “This is a great shock which has hit us all very hard. We can hardly believe this terrible news. Particularly since, even today, we have seen him working hard, as we always knew him, for the sport he loved. We lose a young and sympathetic leader full of hope who was standing for the future of sport. Our thoughts are with his wife, his children and his family.”

To honour the memory of Patrick Baumann, the IOC President asked for the Olympic flag to be flown at half-mast at the IOC Headquarters and at the IOC Headquarters at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires for three days. The IOC also held a memorial in the Youth Olympic Village.

IOC member since 2007, he had been recently appointed as a member (2016-2017) then president (2017) of the Evaluation Commission for the Games of XXXIII Olympiad in 2024, then Vice-Chair of the Coordination Commission for the Games of XXXIII Olympiad Paris 2024 after the French capital won the organisation of the Olympic Games 2024. He was also chair of the IOC Coordination Commission Los Angeles 2028, helping the two host cities to work closely with each other.

A swiss national, Patrick Baumann was also president of the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee.
Patrick Baumann has continuously and actively participated in the IOC’s development throughout his mandate, as a member in the following IOC Commissions: Evaluation for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008 (as IF representative) (2000-2001), Coordination for the Games of the XXX Olympiad London 2012 (2007-2012), International Relations (2008-2014), Sport and Law (2010-2014), Evaluation for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in 2020 (2013), Entourage (2014-2015), Marketing (2014-), Athletes’ Entourage (2015-2018); and Legal Affairs (2017-2018).

Able to speak five languages, Patrick Baumann was the owner of a remarkable academic curriculum: MBA from the Business School of the University of Chicago, a Masters in Sports Administration Management (MEMOS) from the University of Lyon in France and a law degree from the University of Lausanne.

A man of numerous talents, as a lawyer he always demonstrated a great sense of responsibility: he was appointed to the International Advisory Board of the World Academy of Sport in 2009, was a member of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) since 2010 and was also a member of the Executive Committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Patrick Baumann was elected as a Council member of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) in 2011 and re-elected in 2015, he was elected in 2016 President of GAISF and in 2017, President of SportAccord.

“The BVI Olympic Committee joins the IOC in expressing deepest sympathies to Mr Baumann’s family,” said Ephraim Penn, President BVIOC.

Elinah Phillip sole female Caribbean swimmer in 50m free semi finals. Malik John runs in 2nd race of 400m at Buenos Aires 2018

On Thursday, October 11 in rainy and extremely cold weather conditions (11 degrees), Malik John made his opening debut in Stage 1, heat 2, lane 6 of the Men’s 400m running a time of 53.33 seconds but which was later changed to a disqualification for lane violation at the 200m curve.

Meanwhile, in swimming, Elinah Phillip had a non-advancing result in the Women’s 50m Freestyle semi-finals with a time of 26.56 (PB 25.32) to place 15th overall out of 55 competitors in the event. Phillip was the only Caribbean athlete to place in the semi-finals.

John looks forward to bouncing back with a better performance on the track when he competes in Stage 2 of the Men’s 400m running in heat 1, lane 4 on Sunday, October 14th at 4.10pm (3.10pm BVI time)

All track events have 2 stages and the average of both finish times determines the podium finishes of the event. All athletes get the opportunity to compete twice.

John’s final event will be in the mixed relays 8 X 100m during the course of the upcoming week.

Virgin Islands Softball –Baseball Association Represented In Anguilla Tournament and WBSC & ECASC Meetings in Cartagena, Columbia

Despite the difficulties being faced by many Virgin Islanders, softball players and enthusiasts are excited about being back on the ball field as they travel to Anguilla this weekend for the first ‘Hit Your 2nd Shot 1st’ Fast Pitch tournament.

The Virgin Islands Softball-Baseball Association (VISBA) has been invited to compete in Anguilla’s ‘Hit Your 2nd Shot 1st’ Fast Pitch tournament from October 12th through 14th 2018. The female and male national teams of the VI will be competing for the title against Anguilla, Saba and St. Maarten.

Both teams have been practicing weekly at the E. Walwyn Brewley Softball Park, which, while thankful to have been able use the pitch despite its current condition, players hope to see a few changes soon.

The female players are Che’Vaunne Richardson, Claury Scatliffe, Darier Malone, Denecia Hodge, Bria Smith, Kennisha Powell, Deja Adams, Jheane Niles, Kaynesha Stoutt, Tyalia Nibbs, Shaika Jeffers, Kimesha Adams, Makeda Fahie, Rogelle Edmonson and Shanika Forbes.

The team will be accompanied by Terrence Chinnery (President of VISBA) and coaches  Allen Smith and Jeremy Penn.

The male players are Travis Malone, Devon Bedford , Michael Clyne , Joseph Smith, Joseph Smith Jr, Jamal A. Allen , Sheldon C. John, Allen Woodrow Smith , Nikos Penn, Rico Penn, Sirron Scattliffe, Yervis Dandradix Rodriguez Baez, Junior Javier Rodriguez Baez and Kyle Callwood.

Concurrent with the tournament, Shamora Penn, VISBA Public Relations Officer and Glenford Maduro, chief umpire and an appointed director of umpires for English Caribbean Amateur Softball Confederation (ECASC),  will be representing VISBA at the World Baseball Softball Confederation of the Americas and ECASC meetings in Cartagena, Columbia.

VISBA is in the midst of planning a few activities for the VI and hopes that softball lovers will continue to exercise patience during this time. In the meanwhile, VISBA will support other islands’ and tournaments.  Although it has been an extremely tough year, the team is excited about getting things in full motion.

Opening ceremony and first event at Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games

Swimmer, Elinah Phillip was the face of the Virgin Islands when she served as flagbearer in the Opening Ceremony on October 6 at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She also was the first of the two VI athletes to compete in the third edition of the Games when she swam in the 50m butterfly (fly) heats on Tuesday, October 9.

Swimming in heat 5, Phillip touched the wall in a non-advancing time of 28.65 placing her 28/36. Her PB and national record of 27.31 in the 50m fly was achieved just 10 days previously at the FINA Swimming World Cup 2018 in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Phillip, who was slated to compete in the 100m freestyle (free) on Monday was advised by her coach, Benoit Grattepanche to omit the race from her schedule and concentrate instead on the 50m fly and 50m free. The decision was made following a technical meeting ahead of the event.

Her next race is heat 5 of 7 of the 50m free which will start at 10:30am (9:30am BVI time) on Thursday, October 11. Phillip’s qualifying time for this event is 26.14.

VI track athlete, Malik John will also be competing on Thursday, October 11 when he runs in the 400m heats at 5.15pm (4.15pm BVI time).

The athletes continue to be fully immersed in the culture and experience of the Youth Olympic Games as they follow Young Change Maker, Keanu George’s recommendations of activities to enjoy and international athletes to meet. George has been trained to facilitate the VI’s athletes’ participation in “learn & share” activities and encourages them to embrace the YOG spirit of Compete, Learn and Share.

“There is a packed agenda of daily events and activities for the athletes to be a part of,” said Cleave Farrington, Chef de Mission, Buenos Aires 2018. “Working with Keanu, I try to ensure that Elinah and Malik make the most of their time at the Youth Olympic Games, which is much more oriented to facilitating the principles of Olympism for their age group than the Olympic Games which is geared towards older and more experienced athletes. I am pleased to report that the athletes are definitely engaged and appreciating all that is on offer.”

Elinah Phillip & Malik John to compete at Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games

Swimmer Elinah Phillip and track runner, Malik John will represent the VI at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina October 6 – 18.

Swimmer, Elinah Phillip and track athlete, Malik John will be representing the Virgin Islands at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The third edition of the Games will take place October 6 – 18.

Phillip who is 18 years old, will be competing in the 50m and 100m Freestyle and the 50m Butterfly. Her first event is the Women 100m Freestyle heat on October 8th.

This will be Malik John’s first attendance at the YOG. The 17 years old runner will be competing in the 400m with his heat on October 11th.

While this will be Phillip’s first YOG, she made her Olympic Games debut at age 16 when she swam in the 50m Freestyle at Rio 2016, becoming the VI’s first swimmer to compete at a Summer Games. Since then, she has competed successfully in several events in the UK and on the international circuit.

Phillip was a multiple medalist in the Swim England East Region and the winner of the Wilkinson Sword Award 2018, awarded annually for achievement in the sport of swimming.

Regionally, She scored a place in VI sporting history when she won 3 silver medals at the CARIFTA Swimming Championships 2018 in Kingston, Jamaica, March 31 – April 3. Her hat trick delivered a total of 10 medals won by her at CARIFTA, representing the most medals ever won by any BVI athlete in all CARIFTA sporting events.

Earlier this season, Phillip competed in 2 events at the British Summer National Championships held in Sheffield, UK from July 24 – 29, 2018. She reached the final in both events placing 5th and 7th and attaining a personal best and setting a VI national record in the process.

More recently, Phillip was a PanAm Sports Camp participant in Fort Lauderdale, Florida August 30 – September 11. The goal was for athletes throughout the Americas to develop, share experiences with other athletes and receive world-class training from renowned specialists in their sport.

Phillip then went on to compete in the FINA Swimming World Cup 2018 held in Eindhoven, Netherlands from September 28th -30th where she placed 5th in her 50m Butterfly heat with a time of 27.31 shaving 0.42 off her PB achieved a month previously and resetting the national record. Phillip also ranked 19/49 in the 50m freestyle with a time of 25.62 and she placed 27/49 in the 100m freestyle with a time of 57.00 before traveling to the Youth Olympic Games.

“I am really looking forward to racing, meeting athletes from around the world and experiencing Argentinian culture,” said Elinah Phillip.

Relative new comer to the bigger competitive stage, John started competing in track events in 2015 and has participated in the 2016 CUT Games, the 2017 and 2018 Carifta Games, the 2018 Golden South and the 2018 Barbados invitational.

He is a member of the Sprint Tech Track Club which falls under the umbrella of the National Federation BVI Athletics Association.

“I am very happy to have been selected as part of the BVI delegation to compete and experience Argentinian culture. I intend to represent the British Virgin Islands to the best of my abilities,” said Malik John.

In addition to the two athletes, Keanu George of the Valley, Virgin Gorda will attend the YOG as one of the 80 Youth Change Makers (YCM) from across the globe. Nominated by the BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC), George will be expected to facilitate the VI’s athletes’ participation in “learn & share” activities and encourage them to experience the YOG spirit of Compete, Learn and Share.

George is an Honors graduate of the Bregado Flax High Schoo. He obtained an Associate Degree in Computer, Graphic Information Technology at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC). He was an athlete of the Raw Skillz Track Club of Virgin Gorda and currently works at the Wright Choice Canteen as a Manager.

It is fitting that we close out 2018 with the participation of these two young athletes who represent hope for our continued success in major international Games. We look forward to supporting and encouraging them at Buenos Aires 2018,” said Mr. Penn.

BVI Cycling Federation officially approved as member of Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)

The British Virgin Islands’ Cycling Federation (BVICF) today was approved by the Congress of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) as an officially affiliated member of the sport’s international governing body. The approval was part of the agenda of the annual congress which took place in Innsbruck, Austria and brought together representatives of 130 of the UCI’s member National Federations.

The affiliation clears the BVICF to participate as an independent body in any cycling event worldwide without seeking approval from a secondary body.

The BVICF was one of four new members  including federations of the Republic of Chad, the Republic of Cape Verde, and the Cook Islands. The UCI now counts an unprecedented number of 194 affiliated National Federations. Its objective is to increase this total to 200 by 2022.

The congress was held during the 2018 UCI Road World Championships taking place in Innsbruck from September 22 – September 30, 2018 in which Virgin Islands’ cyclist, Darel Christopher Jr competed in the men’s elite Individual Time Trials on Tuesday, September 26.

Darel Jr was the last to cross the finish line after covering a distance of 52.5km and elevation of 654meters in a time of 1.31.43.87. The event was won by Australian, Dennis Rohan who took the rainbow jersey in a time of 1:03:02:57. The course included a 4.4km climb with 330 vertical metres of ascent featuring gradients of up to 14%.
