    200/400M Silver, Bronze medals in Big Sky Conference for Maloney

    Portland State Vikings Sr. Dominique Maloney closed out her collegiate career by achieving another goal during the 2013 Big Sky Conference Championships on her home turf.

    Maloney used a 200m personal best of 24.27 seconds to notch silver, after mining bronze in the 400m with another personal best of 54.44 on Saturday.

    Her 400m time improves her own school record of 54.92 ran two weeks ago in Berkley, California. She won her heat in 54.93 to advance, then lowered her best from 24.45 to 24.31 in the 200m to make the final with a second place showing.

    Maloney earned a complete set of medals, helping the 4x100m relay to victory in 45.33 seconds with a third leg carry that began her medal haul. Her 16.5 points, helped the Viking to a second placed finish—their highest ranking since hosting the championships in 2006.

    It really isn’t over till its over. Midway through Saturday’s Blenheim Trust 5K Series in Paraquita Bay, on the famed course known as “The Beast”—an uphill climb less than 800m to go—series leader James Carr had resigned himself to thinking there’s no way he could win.

    Raheem “Ras” Taylor in his course debut, had a sizeable lead on the field. Taylor however, took a wrong turn, started an uphill climb on the area where he should descend only to discover the mistake.

    By time he regrouped and put his frustrations behind, his momentum had been cut and his pursuers had passed. He could only settle for fifth place as Carr went on to win in 20 minutes and 58 seconds. Carr was followed by Ravi Sukhu in 21.00, Zebalon McLean, 21:46, early leader Emrol Amsterdam, 21:50 and Taylor, 22:35.

    Cambridge Massachusetts - The Roger Williams University Sailing team, led by Alec Anderson earned a berth to its third national championship of the season, clinching a spot in the ICSA Team Racing National Championship with a third-place finish at the Fowle Trophy this past weekend.

    The Hawks opened up the event with a 3-2 record in the first round, earning wins over Yale, Bowdoin, and MIT to get a spot in the Gold Round Robin. At the first Gold Round Robin, the Hawks rolled off victories over Yale, Dartmouth, and Connecticut College, going 3-4 overall in the round. Gold Round Robin 2 saw RWU improve to a 4-3 mark, picking up wins over Vermont, Brown, Connecticut College and Tufts.

    The Sir Francis Drake Highway Challenge

    The BVI Cycling Federation held their 4th race of the season on Sunday, 21st April.  Four categories were represented with 18 cyclists participating. Class A riders completed 4 laps for a total of 60 miles. Women completed 2 laps, a total of 30 miles and the Juniors and the Fun/Novice Classes completed 1 lap for a total of 15 miles.


    Conditions for the race were fair with sunshine although strong winds did pose a challenge for riders on each return from the Western end of the island. All riders except one completed the course. After racing for 60 miles there was an exciting sprint finish with Darel Christopher Jr. being the overall winner with a time of 3 hours 1 minute and 38 seconds. 2nd place was a tie between James Webb and Orano Andrews with Philippe Leroy just 2 seconds behind them for 3rd place. The race between the Junior riders was also highly contested with 4 of the riders finishing within 20 seconds of each other.


    Winners of the other categories were Dersoun Noel for the Juniors, Dara Thomas for the Ladies and Christopher Jones for the Fun/Novice.

    Virgin Islands (UK) Volleyball Association (VIVA) is launching a logo design competition

    Calling all artists, designers, graphic artists, creative minds, crayon drawers, finger painters etc.: The Virgin Islands (UK) Volleyball Association (VIVA) is launching a logo design competition to reflect the association's new name, vision and direction.

    The design should depict BVI nationalism, pride, and passion for the game. It must have strong visual impact and be adaptable for use on letterhead, t-shirts, uniforms and other branded material. For guidance, reference can be made to the logos of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), NORCECA  Volleyball Confederation, and BVI Amateur Volleyball Association (BVIAVA).

    BVI Olympic Committee takes steps towards creating more ‘Sport for All’ opportunities in the Virgin Islands

    BVI Olympic Committee President, Mr. Ephraim Penn, attended a ‘Sport for All’ workshop in Petion Ville, Haiti from April 8-10, 2013. The goal of Sport for All programs is to ensure physical activity can be accessible to all citizens.

    This workshop saw 16 members of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) come together to create a resolution aimed at CANOC, the governments of the Caribbean and the regional institutions to which they are affiliated in order to promote Sport for All program development in the Caribbean.
