The under 17 national female basketball team from the British Virgin Islands, is gearing up to compete in this year’s 2017 Centrobasket Under 17 Women’s Championship, to be hosted in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from July 26-30.

The local team’s selection came following a draw at the International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) regional office in San Juan, Puerto Rico, last Thursday, May 25.

The draw also divided the participating teams into two groups of four teams each. As a result, team BVI was placed in Group A, along with El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico.

In Group B are Suriname, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas.

At the competition, the teams will play in round-robin format for three days. The best two teams from each group will advance to the next phase, where the first place of Group A will play against the second place in Group B and vice versa.

The winners of the semi-finals will advance to the Gold Medal Match, while the losers will play for the bronze medal of the competition.

The top three teams from the tournament will advance to the 2018 FIBA U18 Americas Championships, that will be played in St. Catharines, Canada from June 11-17, 2018.
