The Ballstarz Women lifted the BVIFA Nine a Side Championship with a thrilling 6-2 victory over VG United on Saturday 26th November, on the A.O. Shirley Ground,

Playing with discipline and quick ball movement the Ballstarz raced into a 2-0 lead, when first MVP, Philia James reacted first to a lose ball in the penalty box and then Morgan Creque doubled the advantage in just the 17th minute.

James scored her second and the Ballstarz third before half time with a powerful volley from the edge of the box.

VG regrouped at the break and hit back with two goals from Kezia Gumbs, but were cut off in their comeback by an own goal and then being caught out on fast breaks, pushing forward in search of more goals, first by a wonderful Murcella Gordon free kick and then by Lilly Pierce, which saw the final score 6-2.

“VG is technically the most improved team this year, they are full of youngsters, but we came with a game plan and stuck to it,” commented Coach Maurice Mark. “I told the girls at half time to stay composed because VG would come at them strong in the second half.”

Having Murcella Gordon back in action was a major factor in the Ballstarz victory as she slowed play down and spread passes wide, giving Mark a much-needed calm influence in midfield.

Pierce was a constant threat down the left and right flanks, but VG, showed by a strong second half performance, that they will be better for the experience and be back even stronger in 2017.

At the awards presentation, not only did the BVIFA’s Women Committee present Ms. Gloria Fahie, President of the BVI Cancer Society a cheque for $1,000, but they also honored Brittney Peters as the Golden Boot winner, Kimberley Howell as Golden Glove, James as MVP,  and presented VG Utd with the Presidents “CAPS” Award, an Annual Fairplay Trophy.

The Avengers finished in third place and the Ballstarz avowed to donate $500 of their $1500 winner’s check to the Cancer Society.

Avengers and Ballstarz share six goals in a female football thriller on Sunday after VG Utd Girls come of age on Saturday in the BVIFA Women’s League.

Action last weekend, November 5th and 6th, centered around a titanic struggle between the perennial Women’s Champion team, the Ballstarz and the Avengers from Virgin Gorda playing in their first tournament as an official BVIFA member club.

It looked for all the world like business as usual for the Ballstarz when Phillia James fired home the opening goal in the 29th minute and that’s how it remained until half time.

However, in the space of three second half minutes, the game changed as first Brittany Peters equalized in the 44th, James scored her second in the 46th to make it 2-1 and Keithreece Smith scored in the 47th, almost straight from the kick off, to make it 2-2.

Peters then scored her second in the 67th to give the Avengers a 3-2 lead before, just a minute later, Emerline Lockhart smashed home a long-range equalizer to make the final score 3-3

The teams also share top spot in the standings with 4 points each, whilst the VG Utd Girls are now third following their first ever win in competitive football, 3-1, over the Panthers.

The Girls, the majority of whom are under 16, led early on through the first of a Kayla Skelton brace and despite Jacintha Weekes scoring a sublime equalizer, went ahead from a rocket shot from Kezia Gumbs in the second half and then put the game to bed when Skelton forced home in the 49th minute to make it 3-1.
