Queen’s Baton Relay

The Queens’ Baton Relay (QBR) symbolises the harmony and shared ideals of the Commonwealth of Nations and is the prelude to the Commonwealth Games. In 2014, QBR will visit 70 different nations and territories and travel 190,000km over 288 days. The Queen’s Baton Relay has been included in the Games’ program since the Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games in Wales.

In celebration of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth games, Her Majesty The Queen launched the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay on its global journey on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.  Accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, The Queen placed Her message calling the athletes of the Commonwealth to next summer’s Games in Glasgow inside a baton specially crafted in Scotland. The Queen’s baton is now traveling to the 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth before being opened at the 2014 Glasgow Opening Ceremony on July 23, 2014.

From April 2nd to April 5th, 2014, the BVI Olympic Committee in its capacity as the BVI Commonwealth Games Association, will host the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay in the British Virgin Islands.

About the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton

  • A hand-crafted Baton made of titanium, wood and granite.
  • The heart of the Baton design centers on the Queen’s message, which will be placed inside a transparent cylinder and housed in a pure titanium latticework frame. The message forms the visual core of the Baton design – illuminated from within by LED lights, yet unreadable until the Opening Ceremony.
  • The Baton contains a granite ‘gemstone’ which will be gifted to each nation and territory during the visit. Housed at the very top of the Baton, it is released only by opening a clever mechanism, inspired by historic box puzzles.
